Joshi Detroit, MI, USA Type of book: This is a multiauthor casebook on fetal and prenatal ultrasound. Scope of book: The self-stated purpose of this book is ‘‘to present most, if not all, of what one needs to know in fetal and pediatric ultra- sound in a format that also allows self-testing for board examination preparation.’’ Contents: The book contains 120 chapters. Each chapter begins with an unknown case, followed by a brief explanation of the findings and diagnosis of the unknown case and then by a broader discussion of the topic, including definitions, patho- physiology, differential diagnosis, technical pointers, and additional case examples. The first quarter of the book is devoted to fetal ultra- sound, including sections on the head and neck, chest, abdomen, genital cysts, musculoskeletal system and general obstetrics. The remainder of the book covers pediatric ultrasound with sections on nearly all major organ systems, although peripheral vascular ultrasound is mentioned only in passing in the chapter on osteomyelitis and ocular ultrasound is not discussed. There are 36 color plates of correlative pathologic specimens and Doppler images. Strengths: This book does a good job of bridging prenatal and postnatal imaging, important since so much neonatal imaging is now requested based on prenatal find- ings. The array of diseases covered is great, and the topics are discussed in reasonable depth. The authors often discuss the relative value of other imaging modalities and show correlative images. Discussions are quite practical and address many controversies and frequently asked questions, e.g., how to differentiate pylorospasm and pyloric stenosis. Several of the chapters are authored by radiologists known for their previous work on those topics. Image quality is quite good. Refer- ences are plentiful. The content and self-testing format make this book particularly useful for those pre- paring for the pediatric radiology certificate of added qualification exam. Deficiencies: This book has few weaknesses from the standpoint of a pediatric radiologist. Discussions are succinct yet complete. Topics not covered are mentioned above. Recommended readership: Radi- ology residents, fellows in pediatric radiology, practicing radiologists and ultrasonographers will find this excellent book useful as a reference and as a review for board examina- tions. Overall grading: Excellent.
