  • 2Reflections on a busy seasonThis year saw KGS teams, expertly led by their coaches, achieving great results across all age groups with both the boys and girls 1st XIs reaching advanced stages in their respective National competitions. Heres a summary of what was achieved:

U18s narrowly beaten 3-2 by Dean Close in outdoor National quarter-final.

U18s indoor team reached South finals.

    U16s reached South tournament.

U16s indoor team reached South tournament.

U14s reached quarter-finals of South tournament - losing on penalty strokes.

U13s reached semi-finals of London tournament.

U12s reached the final of the South tournament, losing narrowly to St Georges on penalty flicks.

    Girls Tournaments

U18s outdoor team reached National finals, playing at Lee Valley 9th & 10th March - a fantastic achievement.

U18s indoor team reached semi-finals of South indoor tournament.

U16s indoor team reached South finals.

U16s reached semi-finals of London tournament and eventually finished third.

    U14s reached South tournament.

U13s reached semi-finals of London tournament and eventually finished third.

U12s qualified for South tournament, finishing 5th.

In February 2016 the KGS Hockey Society ran its annual Hockey Rules evening. This event is aimed at parents of First Year pupils, or those new to the School who wish to learn more about the rules of hockey, eloquently and entertainingly explained by Mr Daly and Mr Durban.

It is an opportunity for these parents to find out about some of the more detailed rules and rule changes involved in the game of hockey and to meet other hockey parents over a glass of wine. It is also a great chance for parents to meet their childrens coaches in an informal setting, with questions asked as they arise. Using video material and giving practical demonstrations, the very knowledgeable Mr Daly and Mr Durban brought the subject to life. They also covered everything you need to know about buying hockey sticks and the other equipment that the children require to play hockey at KGS.

The evening was a great success, with conversation and wine flowing freely. Parents left having gained a little more knowledge of the rules for the next time they are standing on the sidelines watching a game. Many thanks to Mr Daly and Mr Durban for giving up their time, once again, to run this event, and heres looking forward to next year!

This July KGS is again sending two boys and two girls teams (from the Fourth & Fifth years) to South Africa in July. This is KGS Hockeys fourth tour to South Africa and the 17-day visit will include games and a tournament in Cape Town where they will also visit Robben Island. They then head off to play matches in Johannesburg and Pretoria, finishing the trip with 2 days in the Mabula Game Reserve.

While in Cape Town, the tourists will visit the literacy-support Shine for which they have raised in excess of 3000 over the past 18 months.

Children in South Africa do not enjoy anything like the educational opportunities which we take for granted. So many leave school with extremely poor literacy skills and as a result fall into poverty, ill-heath and menial work with poor pay and unpleasant conditions. It can even adversely affects their lifespan.

Language is the key that unlocks literacy, and literacy opens up possibilities for all kinds of new learning. Without sound language and literacy skills, children are likely to struggle throughout their school careers. Children who read better, learn better, make good progress in primary school, and are more likely to leave school with qualifications, pursue further education and, ultimately, get a job.

Shines programmes are helping to transform the prospects of some of South Africas most vulnerable children, by breaking the destructive cycle of poor literacy, low attainment, wasted potential and poverty.

    HOCKEY RULES OK!

KGS IN SOUTH Africa... its not just about the hockey

  • 3Three KGS students have made the final selections for the England U18 team for 2016.

They are Holly Munro (U6th), Lottie Ross (L6th) and Ellie De Heer (L6th). They have attended numerous camps and trials over the past few months and we congratulate them on this fantastic achievement! The first international tournament took place over the Easter holidays.

Two other students, Owen Williamson (L6th) and Michael Moran (5th Year) did not make the final selections for their respective age

groups but to make the England Development squads was a huge achievement in itself.

Congratulations also go to the many KGS students who were selected to represent their counties in the recent inter-county competitions and to those who have also been nominated for involvement in higher levels of the England Hockey Junior Performance Programme. Mr Buttanshaw will be providing details in the Kingstonian, the annual school magazine.

Congratulations to Lower Sixth student Ellie De Heer who won the Hockey Writers U16 Player of the Year award sponsored by Higgins. This is a prestigious award which is voted on by hockey journalists who watch the Futures Cup and junior international matches.

Congratulations must also go to Lottie Ross who came second to Ellie in the U16 category and to Holly Munro who came second in the U18 category. All three players are part of the National Age Group Programme and have a large number of Junior International caps between them.

KGS Hockey has a long and distinguished touring tradition. Holland, where hockey is close to being a national sport and the standard is consequently high at all age groups, has been a frequent destination.

Last year we celebrated the 30th consecutive Dutch tour organised by Mr Buttanshaw. Of course, Denis couldnt let it stop there, and two boys and two girls teams (mostly Third Year) travelled to visit Wageningen over the Easter weekend. Our players are hosted by the families of the Dutch players and we reciprocate later in the year. The Dutch players visit Kingston during the first week of half term: Mon 17th to Sat 22nd of October 2016, a chance for the KGS boys and girls to renew acquaintances and build on friendships made over Easter.

    Mr Buttanshaw celebrates his 31st!

Goodbye, Farewell...At the end of each season we have to bid a fond farewell to those leaving us, many of whom have represented KGS for seven years. This year we lose an exceptionally talented group, including Holly Munro, our girls 1st XI Captain and England U18 International. The Hockey Society thanks them all for their dedication and commitment to KGS hockey. Good luck to:

    Whats in the Pipeline?

Isnt it amazing what can be achieved by selling bacon butties on a Saturday morning, organising a Hockey Rules evening and the school hockey and football team photos and marshalling car parking during the Hampton Court Flower Show? Please do support us to raise money for KGS in this way.

Now that we have our new shelters, what other creature comforts can we provide for spectators at Ditton Field? We are pleased to tell you that from the 2016/17 season there will be no need to enquire about the score or how much longer there is to play. Our new electronic scoreboard will look something like the one above.

Q&A with Mrs MacleanMrs Maclean (OK 2000) is KGSs Director of Sport and an ex-International Hockey player.

Who were your sporting heroes growing up?

Linford Christie, as I wanted to run in a 100m Olympic final just like him. I remember being glued to a TV screen, outside a TV/electrical shop on holiday in a small town just south of Barcelona during the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. I thought I want to do that. It was great knowing that only a few miles away he was competing.

What sports do you play these days?

I still play hockey for Surbiton HC (Ladies 1s) who are currently top of the England Hockey Premier League (we did the double last year for the league and the cup). I also run, go to the gym, swim and occasionally play tennis.

What is your favourite sporting memory?

Making the final four in the European Club Championship when I played for Slough HC was amazing. We were such a great team, played against some fantastic players such Naomi van As and we had lots of laughs along the way. We were nick-named GB/England vets on tour (we had a number of more mature players).
