Area Athletics

The Area Athletics tournament, where we compete against local primary schools took place over two days at Tanworth Primary. Field events were on Monday 17th June and track events on Tuesday 18th June. Our team of pupils from key stage two (years 3-6) made us very proud, as always. Everyone did exceptionally well with a record number of first places. From their winning times/distances Alice E, Alice B, Hattie, Sam C and Zach have reached the district finals at Stratford High School on Thursday 4th July 2019. Good luck!

Warwick Castle

On Thursday 20th June Class 3 visited Warwick Castle. We had a very busy day exploring both the castle and the maze. We had a workshop with Richard on ‘Castle Life’ who told us about the large number of people who worked in the castle and what their role was, for example a blacksmith and a bowman. Over lunch, we watched the falcon crest, where birds flew over our heads, which was our favourite bit. In the afternoon, we climbed the many, steep steps up to the top of the tower where we pretended to shoot arrows.

Hockey Assembly

On Friday 21st June, Piers’ dad, Ben Lanoe, came into school to deliver a whole school assembly on his passion for hockey. Ben told us that he didn’t start playing hockey until he was 12 which reassured many children who might not yet have found their favourite sport. He played for England U16/U18 & U21 and even got 2 full England caps before injury forced him to retire. He thought that was the end of his competitive days and focused instead on his career in law. At the age of 40 he went back to hockey and played for England Masters. Last year, he represented England in the Masters World Cup in Barcelona where he was part of the gold winning team and hopes to still be playing when the Masters World Cup comes to England in 2020. The children sat fascinated listening to the highs and lows of his career and took so many positive messages from his assembly. Thank you Ben and good luck next year.

Sports Day

Sports day on the afternoon of Friday 21st June was an enormous success. Well done to Mr Green for organising such a fun filled, competitive and smooth sports day. The children loved all of the events and everyone did their absolute best and behaved beautifully at all times. As you can see from the photos it wasn’t only the children that had fun. Well done to pupils in St Benedict house - the overall winners on the day.

Class 5 Retreat and Reflection

On Tuesday 25th June, Naomi Ceairns, Youth Minister from St Benedict’s came to school for an afternoon of retreat and reflection with Class 5. Naomi created different sections in the corners of the classroom and divided the children into smaller groups so they could rotate around the room spending quality time in each area. The sections included prayer, burdens, time with God and a symbolic area where the children coloured in the Indian ritual symbol of Mandala, which will transform and symbolize what you want it to represent. Naomi emphasized how important God is in our lives and how every one of us would benefit from a closer relationship with Him.

Hockey tournament – Year 3/4

On Tuesday 25th June, pupils from Class 4 took part in our first ever hockey tournament. Thanks to coaching sessions from Ben Lanoe the children were well prepared and bursting with enthusiasm. The competition was at Stratford High School where Stratford Hockey Club train and play their matches. In our league, we won 3 matches and drew 1 to reach the final against Bridgetown. The opposition scored first and it seemed an age before Theo equalized with a stunning goal just as the final whistle was blown. The winners had to be decided by penalties. Who knew a hockey match for 7-9 year olds could be so tense and exciting! After all of the drama of goals, misses and saves it was down to Zach to take the final and deciding penalty. Zach remained calm and collected as he bravely took the penalty and scored although he must have been very nervous. As you can tell from the photos everyone was quite pleased! Well done team, an excellent performance.

Hockey tournament – Year 6

A mixed team of year 6 pupils also took part in a hockey tournament on Tuesday afternoon and achieved equal success. They played and won all five league matches conceding only two goals in the process before reaching the final against Bridgetown. It was an excellent team performance, managed incredibly well by Ben who kept rotating the team to ensure everyone got equal time on the pitch. Piers, a county player, performed exceptionally on the day; leading by example and at all times involving the entire team with his passing. He was rewarded for his efforts by scoring the winning goal in the final. Many thanks to our hosts and tournament organisers – Stratford Hockey Club. Head Boy/Girl Elections

On Wednesday 26th June, we listened to speeches from prospective candidates for the role of Head Boy/Girl. 7 pupils from year 5 delivered a speech on why the rest of the school should vote for them to take over from Alice and Sam next year. There was some excellent ideas (we particularly liked Dylan’s music taster sessions and Kuba’s plans to improve the facilities) and Haytham gave an excellent demonstration of his Capoeira skills. It is very nerve wracking to talk about yourself in front of all of your friends and we are very proud of all of them. The winner(s) will be announced at Speech Day.

Transition Day

On Thursday 27th June, we welcomed the new reception children into school and bid farewell (just for one day) to the year 6 pupils who all spent the day at their secondary schools. All other pupils moved up to their new class for the day and as always the highlight for year 2 pupils was the treat of a jacket potato for lunch! The reception children were fantastic and settled in immediately with already some great friendships underway. We can’t wait to see them again in September.
