It was founded by Czech immigrant Joseph Bulova and based in New York City, where the famous Bulova Observatory was located, high above a skyscraper on Fifth Avenue. Like Gruen, it also had a factory in (Bienne) Switzerland, established in 1912 and dedicated to the production of watch components and their assembly into jeweled movements. The firm is known for its aggressive advertising campaigns and for being the first to advertise on radio – with an announcer stating “B – U – L – O – V – A … 8:00p.m., Bulova Watch Time.”
I am pleased to offer for sale the following vintage men’s watch from Bulova, a two-tone “FLEETWOOD” model that dates to 1929. This tank form timepiece was a “flagship” model that retailed for $50 when new (about $630 today) and is a harder to find model today.
Triple-signed, its 14kt White & Yellow Gold filled case measures 34mm end to end and 27mm in width (29mm with original crown). This works out to be approximately 1-3/8” long and 1-1/8” wide. It is powered by its original 17 jewel, 10AN caliber mechanism that has been fully serviced by my Bulova-trained watchmaker David prior to auction, ensuring it keeps accurate time.
The original matte enamel finished dial has been professionally restored to its original status and is in excellent condition. It is complete with raised gold Arabic numerals, a 60 minute checkered inner track border, original blue steel Spade-style hands and a square sub-seconds dial with 60 second outer chapter and ‘sweep’ blue steel seconds hand. Signed BULOVA below the 12 in raised gold letters and embossed Swiss at the base of the dial. This is the lesser seen “dress” dial version of the Fleetwood, the sport option having radium numbers and radium filled hands.
The new old stock solid glass crystal is excellent, clear condition. The hinged-back, engraved Tank-form case is 14 Karat White Gold Filled with Yellow Gold banding running along the sides and gold banding between the lugs. This yellow gold contrast is in excellent condition (NO brassing) and the entire case is in excellent PLUS shape – absolutely no wear. The matching winding crown is the original and is in excellent shape, operating smoothly.
Turning the watch over I note that the back lid is in excellent PLUS shape, displaying much of its original brushed satin finish. Inside I find that the mechanism is protected by its own crystal and bezel. This was called the “Dust-Tite Protector” and it really helped protect the mechanism from dust, moisture and debris. The mechanism is a high-grade 10AN caliber (Fontainemelon) example, complete with a Breguet overcoil hairspring and cut bi-metallic screwed balance. It is signed Bulova Watch Co. Swiss – Seventeen 17 Jewels, 10AN. There is also a ‘shield’ symbol on one of the plates that is Bulova’s date code for 1929. The inside of the case lid is stamped Pat. Jan 11, 1927 –

In its glory years from the 1920s through the 1940s, the Gruen Watch Company of USA & Switzerland was one of the leaders in wristwatch design and quality, even collaborating with Rolex (i.e., the Aegler movement duo-dial doctor’s watch) from its factories in Switzerland. Prior to WWII, Gruen was better known in the USA than Rolex, which at that time was concentrating on the British and Commonwealth countries (hence lots of early Rolexes coming out of Australia and the UK). Hans Wilsdorf and Gruen were friends and neighbors in Switzerland (their factories were just yards away), and even agreed to market their watches as

Rolex Gruen in Europe, but the Great Depression (and more urgent matters) prevented this.
I am pleased to offer for sale the following Gruen timepiece, a very original 14kt Solid Rose Gold “Pan American” model that dates to ca 1946. This particular timepiece is the “CAPTAIN” model and it retailed for $119.50 plus federal tax when new or $1,325 today.
There was a glamorous mystique to aviation and airplane travel in the 1940s, and Gruen ran several ads showing pictures of its Pan Am pilot's watch with the famous Pan American Clipper flying boat. Originally, these watches were supplied only to the airline and were not actually available for civilian use—the ads were run to create customer awareness of a model that Gruen had big plans for once WWII ended.
In October 1945 an advertisement stated that the Pan American line would go on sale to the public. The company believed that postwar consumers would make increasing use of 24-hour time, especially for airline travel. They also reasoned that, having just come through a major war, many people would have become accustomed to military time and could easily make the transition. Gruen published several articles in their dealer newsletters praising the advantages of dials indicating "the 24 hours of the air-world day," and advising retailers to stock up on Pan Americans to meet the anticipated demand.
The company offered the Pan American in a number of models and variations, in Guildite (steel), gold filled and solid gold cases, for both men and women, and with a variety of lug and case shapes. There were also two-tone versions and versions with square cases and dials. There were a variety of dials as well, but just like the original pilot's watches, they all share common features: a 24-hour dial with an inner 13-24 chapter ring and a red sweep seconds hand.
This triple-signed model is, I believe, desirable for having both an original two-tone rose gold finished dial (important to Pan Am collectors) and an original 14kt Solid Rose Gold case. It measures 38mm end to end and 32mm in width (33.5mm with original rose crown) or 1-1/2 inches long by 1-1/4 inches wide, not counting the crown. It is powered by its original 420SS caliber, 17 jewel Gruen mechanism that has been fully servicedby my trusted watchmaker David to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.
The 100% original two tone rose gold color dial is in great condition and has not been touched since it left the factory over 60 years ago. It features a 60 second outer chapter that’s calibrated to 1/5 of a second for precision, raised gold numerals and ‘dot’ hour indicators, a “Bulls Eye” 24 Hour inner track with black enameled numerals, original gold metal hands and a dark RED original ‘sweep’ center seconds hand. Signed GRUEN VERI-THIN below the 12 and “PRECISION” above the number 18. It is further signed SWITZERLAND at the base of the dial but this is hard to see due to the curvature of the crystal.
The new old stock domed acrylic crystal is excellent, clear condition. The case is 14 Karat Solid

Rose Gold and in excellent PLUS shape, complete with ridged bezel and curving lugs…very nice! The winding crown is original, rose gold finished (unmarked) and excellent shape, winding and setting smoothly.
Turning the watch over I see that the back lid is also in excellent condition (perhaps a couple pinprick marks) and free of any wear or engravings. It is stamped GRUEN 14K GOLD at one edge. Peeking inside I find a clean Seventeen Jewel 420SS Caliber movement that is signed Gruen Watch Co., Seventeen 17 Jewels – Precision – Veri Thin – Patented – Switzerland, GXC – 420SS. The inside case lid is signed Cased and Timed by Gruen Watch Co. – Wadsworth, 14K GOLD – G592916 – 420/534 SS. Please note that the “420” is the caliber number, “534” is the dial model number and “SS” stands for sweep seconds.
This watch has been disassembled, cleaned, oiled and regulated to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. It comes fitted on a new16mm black deBeer hand crafted lizard grain calf leather strap with matching ROSE GOLD finished buckle. All in all nicely preserved, high collectible solid gold Pan Am for that collector who is just itching to add this rarer bird to his or her collection.

Since 1998, Holben's Fine Watches' goal has been happy customers. This is truly handsome men’s timepiece…featuring a distinctive pie pan dial design and constructed of 14kt Solid Yellow Gold. This hermetic case, shock absorber model was produced entirely in Switzerland in the early 1960s by the Benrus Watch Co. of New York, a firm established in 1923 by Benjamin Lazrus (and his brothers). Benrus was long the chief rival of Bulova and like its competitor had its headquarters in New York City while also maintaining a watch factory was in La Chaux-de-Fonds.
Quadruple-signed for Benrus (dial, crown, case and mechanism), it measures 39mm lug tip to lug tip and 32.5m in width (35mm including the original Benrus-signed crown). This works out to just over 1-1/2 inches long by 1-1/2 inches wide, not including the crown. It is powered by its original and high quality Benrus-signed (ETA caliber) 17 jewel, manual wind mechanism that has been fully serviced by my watchmaker David just last week, ensuring it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.
The original two-tone champagne gold, enamel finish dial is in excellent condition and without flaw – nicer than my photos convey. It features applied yellow gold hour markers (some with black enameling), a 60 second outer chapter, original gold metal hands and a ‘sweep’ center seconds hand with inset black enamel tip. Signed BENRUS below the 12 and SHOCK-ABSORBER above the seconds dial. It is further signed SWISS MADE at the base of the dial.
The hardened acrylic crystal is in excellent, clear condition with no flaws. The one-piece case is a hermetic design that is 14 Karat Solid Yellow Gold and in excellent PLUS order – absolutely no wear or engravings whatsoever. The matching and original yellow gold winding crown is stamped “BENRUS” and in excellent shape, winding and setting as it should.
Turning the watch over, I note that the back of the case is in excellent PLUS condition, stamped Waterproof – Shock Absorbing – Dustproof – Open Thru Crystal – Series 3001 – BENRUS 14K GOLD. Being a one-piece case you access the mechanism by removing the crystal and then the stem/crown (stem is a two part design). The mechanism is signed Benrus Watch Co. Inc., Seventeen 17 Jewels – Model DR 23, Swiss AXZ with ETA caliber number (I believe 120) below this. The inside case back is finely engine-turned and stamped CASED & TIMED BY THE BENRUS WATCH CO. .
This wristwatch been fully serviced just last week to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. It comes complete with a new 18mm black deBeer lizard (grain) calf leather band with matching gold finished buckle. All in all a Retro Modern all Swiss made dress watch with lots of wrist appeal to spare – again, my photos do NOT do it justice.

Since 1998, Holben's Fine Watches' goal has been happy

I’ve always loved Bulova, an American company of great repute. I have had many 23 jewel Bulova watches over the years but this is just the second with a genuine diamond dial featuring 12 diamonds in total.
 This triple-signed

timepiece measures 38mm lug tip to lug tip and 31.5mm in width (33.5mm with winding crown). In inches this works out to be 1-1/2 inches long by just shy of 1-1/4” wide, not counting the crown. Its original twenty three jewel (with six adjustments), self-winding mechanism is top-of-the-line and it has been fully serviced by my Bulova-trained watchmaker David just last week. As such, it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.
The black, enamel finished dial is in mint condition and without flaw – professionally restored to its original status and perfectly done. Features include applied rhodium finished “arrow” shape hour markers, genuine diamond markers (each with three diamonds) at the 12, 3, 6 and 9 positions, original silver steel Lance-style hands and a ‘sweep’ center seconds hand. Signed BULOVA 23 JEWELS below the 12. It is further signed SELFWINDING – SIX ADJUSTMENTS above the 6.
The hardened acrylic crystal is in excellent condition and without flaw. The Bulova-signed two-piece case (with separate screw down ring) is Solid Stainless Steel and in excellent condition, complete with sharp, faceted lugs. The unmarked winding crown (possibly a later replacement) in excellent order and operates as it should.
Turning the watch over I see that the back lid is stamped Bulova – Shock Resistant – Antimagnetic – Self Winding – Waterproof – L6 with case reference number. The “L6” is the firm’s date code for 1956.
Inside I find a clean and fully serviced mechanism signed BULOVA WATCH CO., USA - 23 JEWELS, 10 BPAC - HEAT, COLD, ISOCHRONISM + 3 POSITIONS. Note how the movement features the L5 date stamp for 1955 – very common (and correct) for Bulova to have case and mechanisms stamped one year.
This cleaned, oiled and regulated watch winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. I’ve added a new 18mm black genuine calf leather band with matching color buckle. Folks, I think I could be waiting quite a few years before I see another one of these Bulova models for sale. It’s unique case, fancy diamond dial and high-grade mechanism makes it an EXTRA nice example of the Bulova self-winding genre.

Since 1998, Holben's Fine Watches' goal has been happy customers. Among watch collectors, the Omega Watch Co. of Switzerland is one of the most renowned brands, founded by Louis Brandt of Biel in 1848. In 1894 a new caliber bore the name of Omega for the first time, and since then it has produced some of the finest caliber wristwatches money can buy.
Omega is also my favorite Swiss watch firm to collect, combining those qualities of name brand recognition, high quality and comparative value that are important to the seasoned watch collector.
Omega strongly reaffirmed its position as a collector’s brand in 2007 when Antiquorum held its “Omegamania” theme sale in Geneva, Switzerland. The prices realized vastly exceeded pre-auction estimates and set new records for many older models. Yes folks, good vintage Omega watches are only going UP in value.
I am pleased to offer for sale the following men's Omega timepiece, an automatic wind CONSTELLATION model (caliber 564) from 1966. This is no ordinary watch but an Officially Certified Chronometer featuring a high-grade 24 jewel mechanism that is adjusted to five positions and temperature.
Omega launched the Constellation in 1952 and it was the first automatic (self-winding) chronometer. The first version, with its 12-sided “Pie Pan” dial made a sensation as soon as it was released. In 1955 the company took First Place at both the Neuchatel and Geneva Timing Contents. It was the first time that the same firm, the same brand, succeeded in the same year in leading in all the trials for wrist chronometers.
In 1960 an uninterrupted series of 20,000 automatic Constellation movements obtained Observatory Certificates marked “exceptionally good.” In 1962 more

than half of all officially certified Swiss chronometer wristwatches were Omega Constellations – something that Rolex could not come close to.
This particular Constellation model is in excellent ORIGINAL condition, a stainless steel model with 14k Solid White Gold bezel that is signed for Omega SIX times (dial, crystal, crown, outer case, inner case & mechanism). It measures 41mm lug tip to lug tip and 35mm in width (36.8mm with original signed crown). In inches this is 1-5/8” long by 1-3/8 wide, not including the Omega crown. My watchmaker David has fully serviced its original Twenty Four jewel, 564 caliber mechanism and it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.
The 100% original silver enamel dial is in absolutely flawless condition and is guaranteed to be untouched since it left the factory on this watch. Features include a 60 second outer chapter, applied silver and black hour markers, original silver and inlaid black enamel metal hands, quickset date window at the 3 position and ‘sweep’ silver seconds hand. Signed OMEGA AUTOMATIC CHRONOMETER OFFICIALLY CERTIFIED with applied white gold trademark Omega symbol below the 12 and Constellationwith applied white gold “star” above the 6. It is further signed T SWISS MADE T at the base of the dial.
The 100% original hardened acrylic crystal is in excellent condition (with loupe perhaps a few fine marks) and it is actually stamped with the OMEGA symbol right in the center – visible with a loupe but not the naked eye. The original Omega Constellation case is a solid stainless steel example with 14 karat solid white gold bezel that is in excellent condition with no wear, all edges and details are very sharp – in keeping with a watch that was worn but carefully worn. The original Omega-signed steel winding crown is in excellent shape as well, winding and setting smoothly.
Turning the watch over I find that the screw-down back lid is stainless steel and marked with the Omega Constellation “Observatory” in raised detail. Note also the 8 stars in the sky – all crisp and detailed like the observatory. This design is the most important thing to look at when you’re buying a Constellation model as no matter how good someone is with polishing a case (or doing other restoration work) he or she can’t hide the wear to the back lid detailing.
Peeking inside I find a rose gold finished mechanism that is signed Omega Watch Co., Swiss [Caliber] 564 – Adjusted Five [5] Positions & Temperature, Twenty Four 24 Jewels. The serial number is #24,766,877 – dating the watch to 1966 (perhaps 1967) as per Omega production records. The inside of the case back is signed OMEGA WATCH CO., FAB. SUISSE, SWISS MADE – ACIER INOXYDABLE – ST 168.017.
This watch has been disassembled, cleaned, oiled and regulated to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping very accurate time. To quickset the numerical date you pull the crown OUT to the second position (and then back in) to advance an entire day. It comes fitted on new and high

If you are looking for a solidly built, rugged Swiss Army watch for everyday wear this is a great choice, my very own Victorinox Classic Officers 1884 model in excellent, pre-owned condition. I have had this quadruple-signed watch for a few years now but have probably worn it a couple months total – one of the realities of being a watch collector (too many watches, too little time!)
This is a solid size timepiece, measuring 49mm lug tip to lug tip and 43.5mm in width (45.5mm with partially recessed Victorinox-signed crown). In inches this works out to be 2 inches in length by 1-3/4 inches in width (without crown). I have just replaced the battery and its precision Swiss quartz mechanism sets smoothly and keeps very accurate time.
The silver guilloche (engine turned dial) is in mint condition. It features raised silver numerals, silver hands (with luminous fill), a 24 hour military time inner track, quick-change date window at the 3 position and silver center seconds hand. Signed SWISS ARMY

below the 12 with Victorinox trademark and Swiss Made at the base of the dial.
The genuine sapphire glass crystal is in flawless condition – the most scratch resistant glass you can have on a watch. The case is solid stainless steel and in excellent condition – perhaps a couple small scuffs if you look very closely but again, this watch was carefully worn. The original steel crown is engraved with the Victorinox logo and excellent, setting as it should.
Turning the watch over I see that the screw-down back lid is stainless steel and stamped Victorinox Swiss Army – Water Resistant 100 Meters [330 ft.] – Stainless Steel – Swiss Made, Sapphire Crystal 060609219 -241145. Inside is a precision Swiss quartz (Ronda) mechanism that has just had a new battery installed and the seals checked by my watchmaker.
This watch comes fitted on a new 20mm black Swiss Army style band and I have transferred over the original solid stainless steel Victorinox buckle to it, as shown. All in all a great travel, weekend, go anywhere adventure watch that you can even take in the water if you so chose. Thanks for taking a look!

Since 1998, Holben's Fine Watches' goal has been happy customers. I treat buyers as I like to be treated: with courtesy and respect. The story of the Eterna Watch Co. of Grenchen, Switzerland reads as a long list of achievements in the world of horology…countless innovations have originated from its factory, and they are prized watches amongst those in the know, primarily collectors in Europe and Japan. The quality is remarkable, and one look at its movements tells the story, truly topnotch.
Founded on November 7, 1856 by Dr. Josef Gerard and Urs Schild, the first Eterna watch factory began producing pocket watch movements, quickly followed by complete timepieces. Schild took control of the company in 1866, and was noted as the inventor of the pocket “alarm” watch (which Schild patented in 1908) for use on the wrist.
Through the 1930s and onwards the company had a succession of technical innovations, teamed with its movement-making subsidiary ETA. This included the smallest serially-produced wristwatch, with a baguette movement, in 1930; an eight-day alarm in the early thirties; the first Eterna automatic (self-winding) wristwatch in 1938 - a men's model with a swinging winding-weight; an automatic wristwatch in 1942, considered remarkably small and thin for its time; and the futuristic winding-rotor on ball-bearings launched in 1948 for the Eterna-Matic self-winding wristwatches. Sorry if this introduction is a bit long but I wanted to emphasize that these watches were every bit as good as a comparable Omega or Longines model.
I am pleased to offer for sale the following men’s Eterna timepiece – a ca 1950 stainless steel model with sculpted, swooping lugs that are simply incredible. This watch is a knock-out in person and my photos probably fail to do it justice.
Triple-signed for Eterna, it measures 42mm lug tip to lug tip and 33.5mm in width (35mm with crown). In inches this works out to be just over 1-5/8” long by 1-3/8” wide including the winding crown. It is powered by its original and higher-grade 17 jewel, manual wind (Caliber 1116H) mechanism that has been fully serviced by my trusted watchmaker David to ensure it winds smoothly and runs accurately.
The black enamel finished dial is the original that has been professionally restored to its original status. It is in excellent condition and without flaw. Features include a silver 60second outer chapter that is calibrated to 1/5 of a second for precision, silver enamel numerals and hour markers, original slim silver steel Dauphine style hands and a ‘sweep’ original seconds hands with RED colored tip. Signed ETERNA below the 12.
The hardened acrylic crystal is in excellent shape with no flaws. The two-piece case is in excellent condition, solid stainless steel and looking as nice now as it did when new. The highlight of the case are its lugs – starting near the center of the case and stretching, swooping downwards in dramatic effect. The chromed steel winding crown is in excellent shape and operates smoothly.
Turning the watch over I note that the back lid is stainless steel, snap down vacuum seal in design and in excellent shape with no personal engravings. It carries the case number 3,263,882.

Inside is a clean and higher-end Seventeen Jewel manual mechanism signed ETERNA - 3,296,234 with caliber number 1116H below the balance wheel. As with Omega, Eterna case and movement numbers were not meant to match). The lack of company letter code, lack of number of jewels and adjustments printed out (etc.) tells me that this is a European market Eterna and was not meant for export to the USA. The inside of the case lid is finely engine turned and stamped MODELE DEPOSE - ACIER INOXYDABLE – ETERNA WATCH CO., SWISS. Modele Depose Acier Inxoydable translates as “Registered Model – Stainless Steel.”
This timepiece has been disassembled, cleaned, oiled and regulated prior to auction to ensure it winds and sets smoothly and keeps accurate time. It is fitted on a new and high quality 18mm black deBeer lizard (grain) calf leather strap with matching steel buckle. All in all an elegant and higher-end Swiss Eterna that was harder than usual for me to part with – if you a fancy of great lugs this is the one for you!

Since 1998, Holben's Fine Watches' goal has been happy customers. Joseph Bulova and based in New York City, where the famous Bulova Observatory was located, high above a skyscraper on Fifth Avenue.
I am pleased to offer for sale the following vintage Bulova timepiece, a men’s solid stainless steel automatic wind model that dates to 1962. This fancy quadrant dial watch is in excellent original condition and features a unique water resistant hermeticcase design.
Triple-signed, it measures 42mm end to end by 33.5mm in width (36mm with crown), or just over 1-5/8 inches long by just over 1-3/8 inches wide, including the winding crown. My Bulova trained and certified watchmaker David has fully serviced its original 17 jewel rotor automatic mechanism to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.
The 100% original two-tone silver, enamel finished dial is in pristine shape – completely untouched since it left the factory 50 years ago and without flaw (I can’t remember ever seeing a nicer original example). This is called a “quadrant” dial because of its two-tone qualities, changing depending on the direction of the light. It is also called a “pinwheel” dial or an “hourglass” dial. Features include a 60 second outer track border, applied silver hour markers and number 12 (with luminous dot next to each), original Lance-style hands with luminous fill and a ‘sweep’ original silver steel seconds hand. Signed BULOVA in raised silver letters below the 12 and SELFWINDING above the 6. It is further signed SWISS below the 6.
The domed acrylic armored crystal is in excellent condition and without flaw. The two-piece case is comprised of a bezel ring and body (there is no back lid) – a hermetic design to keep water and moisture out. It is stainless steel and features prominent, sharp lugs. The domed steel winding crown is a design that is correct for Bulova and while not marked I believe it to be original for this model. It winds and sets as it should.
Turning the watch over I see that the back of the case (this is not a separate lid) is in excellent order and stamped Bulova – Stainless Steel Case – Shock Resistant – Waterproof – Self-winding – Antimagnetic – M2 with case number as well. The M2 is the firm’s date code for 1962. Peeking inside I find a fully serviced rotor automatic (self winding) 17 Jewel movement that is stamped BULOVA WATCH CO., [CAL.] 11AFAC – 17 SEVENTEEN JEWELS – SWISS, BXW - M2. Please note how the rotor is punched through with a B for Bulova design, very cool to think of such details!
This cleaned, oiled & regulated timepiece winds and sets effortlessly while keeping accurate time. I’ve added a new deluxe

My longtime favorite U.S. watch firm is the Elgin National Watch Company, a prolific American firm established in 1864 on 35 acres of land donated by the City of Elgin, Illinois (the factory had a National Street address). It was a strategic location, right next to the Galena and Chicago Union Railroad, one of the busiest railways into Chicago, and the Elgin factory would become the focal point of the town.
Elgin would offer its first watch for sale in 1867, marking the beginning of fierce competition with its chief competitor, Waltham, which (ironically) was instrumental in forming Elgin, as two of the original organizers were P.S. Bartlett and D.G. Currier of Waltham fame. Bartlett and Currier would later join the Illinois Watch Co. of Springfield.
I am pleased to offer for sale the following vintage men’s timepiece from the Elgin firm, a 14kt White Gold filled engraved model in excellent condition inside and out. This Art Deco model could be described as either “Barrel” form of “Tonneau” form – a style that was equally popular with Elgin’s rivals Hamilton, Gruen and Waltham.
Triple-signed for Elgin, its case measures 35mm end to end 28mm in width (31mm with crown). This works out to be 1-3/8 inches lug tip to lug tip and 1-1/8 inches in width, not including the winding crown. My trusted

watchmaker David has fully serviced its 15 jewel, manual wind mechanism to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.
The original enamel finished dial is in excellent condition and has not been restored – it most likely is a new old stock dial as with my loupe everything is factory correct (this is the way I obtained the watch). It features a 60 minute checkered outer track border, mirror finish gold Arabic numerals that “explode” around the dial, an inner border and original Elgin blue steel Spade-style hands. Signed ELGIN below the 12.
The solid glass crystal is in excellent, clear condition. The 14 Karat White Gold Filledcase is a barrel (or tonneau) form with engraved bezel and case sides. It is in excellent PLUS shape with no wear whatsoever. The matching white gold filled vintage winding crown is in excellent condition and operates smoothly.
Turning the watch over I see that back lid is also 14K white gold filled and in excellent shape with an Art Deco design monogram that reads “WN.” I think this is more artwork than a simple engraving as its beautifully done. Inside I find a clean 6/0 size, fifteen jewel movement that is signed Elgin, USA – 15 Jewels with serial number # 22,300,013 – dating it to ca 1920. The inside of the case lid is signed E/I – 6/0 Wadsworth Quality – 14 Karat Gold Filled with case number below. Please note that the “E/I” stamp means that Wadsworth made this case for specifically Elgin or Illinois to use – you don’t often see a double usage stamp like this but you will see them separately (H, W, E & I) in early to mid 1920s American made wristwatch cases.
This early strap model Elgin wristwatch has been completely disassembled, cleaned, oiled and regulated to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. It comes fitted on a new 16mm deBeer black lizard grain calf leather strap with matching color buckle, a high quality band for a handsome watch. I don’t think American Art Deco watches get any more classic than this folks – this one is excellent on all fronts and has great wrist appeal too.

Since 1998, Holben's Fine Watches' goal has been happy customers. My longtime favorite U.S. watch firm is the Elgin National Watch Company, a prolific American firm established in 1864 on 35 acres of land donated by the City of Chicago in Elgin, Illinois. It was a strategic location, right next to the Galena and Chicago Union Railroad, one of the busiest railways into Chicago. By 1867 the first watch was marketed for sale, retailing for $115 (think of that in today’s prices!) and Elgin was soon competing head-on with its chief competitor, Waltham, which (ironically) was instrumental in forming Elgin, as two of the original organizers were P.S. Bartlett and D.G. Currier of Waltham fame.
I am very pleased to offer for sale what is arguably the most collectible (and most beautiful) of the ladies Art Deco Elgin models – the Lady and Tiger imagined by famed Paris designer Luciein Lelong and produced by Elgin in 1928. This watch can be described as the flagship model of the Parisienne series of watches offered by Elgin in the late 1920s and its 14kt Solid White Gold case with inlaid colored enameling is simply one of a kind, no other Art Deco watch comes close.
This triple-signed watch measures 29mm lug tip to lug tip and 17mm in width (19mm with original winding crown). In inches this works out to be just over 1-1/8” by 5/8” wide, not including the crown. Attached to the watch is a cloth (grosgrain style) band with original 14kt solid white gold filigree clasp of a good length and easily adjusted to any size wrist. It is powered by its correct 15 jewel, 18/0 size manual wind Elgin mechanism, fully serviced prior to auction to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.
The antique white, enamel finished dial has been professionally restored to its original status and is in excellent condition. It features a 60 minute checkered outer track border, black enameled numerals and original Elgin fuseaux-style blue steel hands. Signed ELGIN below the 12.
The solid glass crystal is in excellent condition and without flaw. The hinged-back case 14 Karat Solid White Gold case is Art Deco personified – like taking the look and feel of a 1920s movie theatre marquee or lobby and shrinking it down to 1 inch in size. This finely engraved case features inlaid cloisonné enameling in gold, black and a burnt orange color and the enameling is excellent. At the top is a ‘ferocious’ tiger and facing it is an Egyptian inspired woman in profile, or perhaps a stylish flapper of the era. The original and simply designed winding crown is a matching white gold finish and in excellent shape, operating smoothly.
Turning the watch over I note that the back lid is clean and shiny, in excellent shape and without any engravings or wear (past or present). Peeking

inside I find a just cleaned, oiled and regulated Fifteen Jewel (Grade 484, 18/0 Size) movement, signed ELGIN USA - 15 JEWELS with serial number #32,436,624 - dating this watch to 1928 as per production records. Each exposed ruby jewel is set within a gold screw setting, a clear sign of a higher-grade movement. The inside of the case lid is stamped Cased and Timed by Elgin National Watch Co. - J. Milhening Inc. – 14K – 56,348.
Fully serviced, this beautiful Lady & Tiger model winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. It comes fitted with a new cloth grosgrain style strap and I have transferred over the original 14kt Solid White Gold finely engraved clasp to it (marked STURDY 14K). As the bottom clasp section can slide across the length of the band you can easily size it to ANY wrist – from small to large. This is the first Lady and Tiger model I’ve had in a couple years and I always love offering them for sale – partly to show them off but also to show newer watch collectors the true ‘height’ of Art Deco design.

Since 1998, Holben's Fine Watches' goal has been happy customers. I’ve always loved Bulova, an American company of great repute.
I am pleased to offer for sale the following vintage ladies timepiece from the Bulova firm, a finely engraved, hinged case model that dates to 1925. This 14kt white gold filled model is in excellent condition inside and out and features a sterling silver, enamel finished dial and cabochon sapphire crown.
Triple-signed, its wire lug case measures 29mm end to end and 17mm in width (20mm with winding crown). In inches this works out to be 1-1/8” by 5/8” not including the crown and it is fitted on new black leather Swiss strap that will fit a wrist 5-1/2 inches to 6-3/4 inches in size. My Bulova-trained watchmaker David has fully serviced its original 15 jewel, 2 adjustment Bulova mechanism to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.
The sterling silver, enamel finished dial is in flawless condition, professionally restored to its original status. It features black enamel painted numerals, a crisp checkered 60 minute inner track border, original blued steel Spade-tip hands and a finely engraved & etched Florentine center dial that must be seen in person to be appreciated. Signed BULOVA below the 12 and embossed SWISS at the dial base.
The glass crystal is in excellent, clear condition. The case is a a 14kt white gold FILLED beauty, a tour-de-force of Art Deco embossing and geometric engraving on the bezel, case sides and even the back lid. It is hinged at the rear and closes securely…in excellent condition. The cabochon sapphire winding crown is excellent as well, winding and setting smoothly.
Turning the watch over I see that the back lid is in excellent PLUS shape with no wear or engravings, just a finely engraved border. Peeking inside via the secure hinged back case (opens and closes perfectly), I find a high grade Oval-shaped Fifteen Jewel, manual wind movement that is signed Bulova Watch Co., Swiss, [Caliber] 6P – Fifteen 15 Jewels, Two 2 Adj.. There is also a “circle” date code stamp just below the crown, indicating a 1925 production date. The inside of the case lid is signed BULOVA QUALITY – FILLED – AMERICAN STANDARD with case number below.
This fully serviced timepiece winds and sets very smoothly while keeping accurate time. It comes fitted on a new Swiss made 8mm matte leather band especially designed for solid wire lug watches like this – the ends fold over and are secured by metal bars.

My favorite U.S. watch firm has long been the Elgin National Watch Company, a prolific American firm established in 1864 on 35 acres of land donated by the City of Chicago in Elgin, Illinois. It was a strategic location, right next to the Galena and Chicago Union Railroad, one of the busiest railways into Chicago. By 1867 the first watch was marketed for sale, retailing for $115 (think of that in today’s prices) and Elgin was soon competing head-on with its chief competitor, Waltham, which (ironically) was instrumental in forming Elgin, as two of the original organizers were P.S. Bartlett and D.G. Currier of Waltham fame.
I am pleased to offer for sale the following vintage men’s timepiece from the Elgin firm, a finely engraved and inlaid enamel model that dates to ca 1924. This early Art Deco model is in excellent condition inside and out and features a Cut Corner design 14kt White Rolled Gold plated “Stellar” case that exemplifies the look and feel of the Art Deco period.
A good size watch for its era, it measures 39mm lug tip to lug tip and 28mm in width (30mm with original crown). In inches this works out to be just over 1-1/2” long by 1-1/8” wide, not including the winding crown. It has been fully serviced prior to auction to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.
The antique white, matte enamel finished dial is in excellent condition and without flaw – I

have examined this dial closely and it has not been restored. It features a checkered 60 minute outer track border, raised gold Arabic numerals, Fuseaux-style blue steel hands (unique to Elgin) and an octagonal sub-seconds dial with 60 second outer chapter and original blued steel sweep original Fuseaux style seconds hand. Signed ELGIN below the 12.
The solid glass crystal is in excellent, clear condition. The three-piece, cut corner case is in pristine shape, a 14 Karat White Rolled Gold Plated "Stellar" example with engraved and enameled bezel and beaded engraved sides. The original white gold finished domed winding crown is in excellent shape, operating smoothly.
Turning the watch over, I note that the back lid is in excellent PLUS order with no wear – tastefully and artistically monogrammed “RRB” in the center. Taking a peek inside I find a Seven Jewel movement that is signed ELGIN, U.S.A. with serial number #25,020,567 – dating the watch to ca 1924 as per company production records. The inside of the original case is signed Star Watch Case Company - Stellar. Star's use of the word "Stellar" has been documented to refer to a 14k Rolled Gold Plated case. The case number is #8,684,032.
This cleaned, oiled and regulated Elgin winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. It is fitted upon a new old stock 16mm black lizard grain calf leather strap with matching color buckle. All in all a quintessential Art Deco period American made wristwatch in impeccable condition – I think you’ll be quite pleased.

Since 1998, Holben's Fine Watches' goal has been happy customers.
