The following was written by her pastor, Rev. Dane Robinson.

Throughout the course of history there have been mighty people who have conquered great enemies and built great empires. Students read about them in their his-tory books and editors splash their name across the headlines, but the way that God works is quite opposite of the way the world operates and if someone is looking for God’s work throughout history, they will rarely learn about it in a class-room or find the names of those God has induct-ed into His Hall of Fame. Not because their works are any less mighty or what they have achieved is any less great, but sim-ply because most people don’t know where to look.

The work that God is doing to bring the change He desires for the world find Him will never be found in the sudden shifts of the mighty, rushing winds of the culture recorded by historians and we won’t read about it in the head-line on the front page of USA Today because God is not in the intimidating roar of the rushing wind or in the terrifying rattle of the ground-breaking earthquake, He is in the same place the Prophet Elijah told us that He found God at work all those years ago, in the still small voice. That’s

where you’ll find the real story of God at work in the world. God isn’t us-ing extraordinary events to change the ordinary ways that people live, He is using ordinary people to extraordinarily change the lives of other ordi-nary people.

That’s the story that

we think is worth tell-ing and that is the kind of work we believe is worth our column inches each week. God’s story is nev-er in the event, it’s in the lives of those who were part of it.

This week’s story is about one of those very people. Since its begin-ning in 1921, The Hold-

enville Church of the Nazarene has had count-less humble members who have given their time, talent and treasures to keep the church run-ning and God’s mission moving forward, includ-ing a few who went on to become very well known and respected leaders in the Church of the Naza-

rene and by other Chris-tians all across the nation and around the world. But, there have been very few who have held as many different titles, served the local church for as many consecutive years, worked as many hours, tithed as many dollars, or been part of almost every notable memory in the church’s recorded history than Mary Evelyn Wilson.

Mary Evelyn, like the rest of her family, is known for her faith-fulness. She faithfully served in every capacity and role ever asked of her by the church and hum-bly served her way to becoming the matriarch of the church. She has been the glue that held the church together dur-ing its times of distress and the bridge between what the church used to be and what it is today. She is one of the few in this life who doesn’t just “go to church”, she is the church. The church is not part of her life, it is her life. Like the real saints of God, she isn’t satisfied with simply be-ing a Christian, she has a deeper desire to be Christ like. Dearest Dad,I’m coming home to get married soon, so get

your check book out. I’m in love with a man who is far away from me.

As you know, I’m in Australia and he lives in Scotland. We met on a dating website, became friends on Facebook, and had long chats on Whatsapp. He proposed to me on Skype, and now we’ve had two months of a relationship through Viber.

My beloved Dad, I’d like your blessing, good wishes, and a Really Big Wedding.

Lots of love and thanks,Your daughter,Lilly

THE RESPONSEMy Dear Lilly,Like Wow! Kool!I suggest that you two get married on Twitter,

Honeymoon on Tango, buy your kids on Amazon, and pay for it all through PayPal.

And when you get fed up with your new husband, sell him on eBay.

Love,Your Dad.

Our Wedding Anniversary was this week and my wife shared the following story with me. I wonder why?

One Day, a gentleman (not me), wanted to surprise his wife with a gift so I went to a cosmetics counter and asked the clerk, “Show me some perfume.”

The clerk handed him a bottle with a $60 price tag.

A bit much,” he replied, so she returned with another priced at $30.

“Still too much,” he said, adding, “what I’d like to see is something real cheap.”

She handed him a mirror.—CC—

I get plenty of sleep so the following item does not pertain to me. However, it probably does to many of our readers.

Millions of Americans skimp on sleep on weekdays so that they can put in extra hours at work or school, and then try to catch up on the weekends. A new study says that strategy doesn’t work, and can hurt your concentration, memory, and ability to think clearly. In tests of sleep-deprived rats and sleep deprived humans, researchers found that those who were allowed to catch up on lost sleep still performed worse on tests than subjects who always got enough sleep. After just one night of little or no sleep, study author Fred Turek tells USA Today, people are able to recover by increasing the time spent in deep sleep cycles the next night. But after a few nights’ sleep loss, Turek says, “The ability to compensate for lost sleep is itself lost, which is damaging mentally and physically.” Studies have not determined how long the fuzzy thinking, slower reaction times, and poor memory lasts, but sleep experts warned that if lost sleep is a chronic problem, the effects might be permanent. “The deficits can become severe,” said sleep expert David Dinges of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. “You need to make sure sleep time is protected.”

—CC—Locating my keys is almost a daily event. I

guess that is why I enjoyed the following so much . . .

WHAT’S THE KEY TO AGING WELL?

By the time you’re 50, you’ve probably had your share of senior moments. Locking yourself out of the house. Forgetting where you put your reading glasses. Or totally blowing off an important meeting, even though it was on your iPhone calendar. And what the hell is an iPhone anyway?

I believe I achieved my Personal Best Senior Moment the other day at Sleepy’s. I was in the “just looking” mode, hopping from bed to bed with no intention of buying. (Think Sleeping Beauty on amphetamines.) It wasn’t as nutty as it sounds. After looking at mattress prices online, I wanted to do some serious comparison shopping before plunking down big bucks for a non-returnable, major expenditure. It’s gotten very confusing. Unless you’re caring for your bedridden Aunt Martha, why would anyone want a waterproof, mechanical mattress? And what exactly makes a mattress worth over $2,000 if it doesn’t come with George Clooney?

After 15 minutes of too soft, too hard, too expensive, I was ready to leave. I reached into my pocket for my car keys. They weren’t there! The saleswoman mistook the distressed look on my face

for a change of heart. “I can arrange monthly payments spread out over 25 years,” she cooed.

I figured that the keys must’ve slipped out of my pocket as I was cavorting from one mattress to another. All I had to do was retrace my steps. On my hands and knees. The perky saleswoman joined me on the carpet, pointing out the advantages of foam over coil springs.

We had circled the showroom three times before she said, “Maybe you left your keys inside your car?” She had a point. I peered into the windows of my locked car. No keys in sight. My panic was growing. So was the saleswoman’s. I had been in the store for an hour, and she hadn’t gotten a sale. Naturally, my cell phone was in the car. The saleswoman allowed me to use her phone to call AAA.

Have you ever been trapped inside a mattress store with a salesperson on commission? I don’t recommend it. Not even on a bright, sunny November day under a cobalt sky. When the AAA tow truck arrived, I practically collapsed into the driver’s arms. He quickly opened my car’s door, only to discover that there was no key inside. Not under the seat, beside the seat, between the seats or winking from the floorboards.

When I walked back inside Sleepy’s, the sales-woman was nowhere to be seen. I don’t blame her. No doubt had locked herself inside a closet and called the police. Help! There’s a senior citizen in the store who refuses to leave and isn’t making a purchase. What with domestic terrorism and all, she had reason to fear for her life.

So, there I was crawling on all fours through a sea of mattresses. I saw many curious things under the beds but not my keys. Was I going mad? Was this the beginning of the end? Perhaps an aneurism? Just when I was ready to give up and walk towards the White Light, I flipped open one of the large plastic packets that explain each mattress’ unique qualities. “Genuine titanium springs that will outlive you by 20 years!” And there, inside the packet, were my keys!

To say I felt relief is a gross understatement. What I felt was what El Chapo experienced when the long tunnel that began inside his maximum-security prison cell ended in a luxury resort in Uruguay. And yet, along with the euphoria of my release from Sleepy’s was a new grim reality. I had reached the age where things—important things—magically vanish into the Black Hole of Senior Moments. I have a choice. Safety pin my car keys, cell phone and reading glasses to my sleeves like a toddler’s mittens. Or accept that there’s waterproof, mechanical mattress in my future.

And last of all . . .In my lectures on human genetics in American University in Washington,

D.C., I explained that males determine the sex of the offspring by contributing either an X or Y chromosome.

On the exam, I asked the question “How is the sex of a child determined?”One student wrote: “By examining it at birth.”

We had six to play “Moon” dominoes Mon-day Night! We only had one lady to drive from Wewoka but we were glad to have her. We draw for partners by drawing dominoes and the two closest together become partners.

They were Arjean Williams and Cindy McDaniel; Sharon Dil-day and Wanda Davis;

and Glenda Stinson and Lynn Marquis.

Sharon and Wanda won only one game but they made the rest of us work harder to win! Glenda and Lynn won 3 games. All three games were won by shooting the «Moon» by tiddling. Lynn won two and Glenda won one! Ya-Hoo! Arjean and Cindy were the big winners

of the evening by win-ning 6 games including one game won by Cindy shooting the “Moon” tid-dling style. Awesome!

Ladies, Come and join us on Monday night at the Nazarene Fellowship Hall and see what the fun is all about! You will have a good time, I promise!

See ya then,

Service held for Jennie (Fotenopulos) MalavisOn Saturday, the 1st of

September 2018, Jennie F. Malavis, loving wife and mother, passed away peace-fully at home, surrounded by her family. She was 98 years of age.

Jennie was born on the 15th of February 1920, in Musk-ogee, Oklahoma, to George and Ellie (Panos) Fotenopu-los. Her baptismal name, Zoe, is the Greek word for “life,” which she fully em-braced. Even some of her last words spoken, “Enjoy life” mirrored her name. The day Jennie transitioned, the 1st of September, is the Orthodox Ecclesiastical New Year. On this day, she began her new life in eter-nity.

Her interest in playing the piano began when she was three years old, at which time she performed a solo piano recital. Her fam-ily moved to Holdenville, Oklahoma and she gradu-ated from Holdenville High School where she was very active in playing basketball, elected varsity cheerleader and Annual Queen. In Hold-enville, she taught piano les-sons and played the organ at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church (in the absence of an Or-thodox Church). Her talent drew the attention of Clar-ence Burg, dean of music at Oklahoma City University who awarded her a piano scholarship to OCU. She was named “Nicest Girl” in the university yearbook among many honors. Her freshman year, she perfect-ed playing Grieg’s A Minor Concerto and performed with the Kansas City Con-servatory of Music Orches-tra– one of her defining moments. Dean Burg was told by visiting orchestra conductors, that he had one student who was capable of concertizing – his freshman, Jennie Fotenopulos. Jen-nie, however, chose the path of wife and mother over a music career, of which she never regretted.

She married the love of her life, George Nicholas Malavis in 1950 and moved to Houston where she and George, a restaurateur, gave birth to a son, Nicholas George and a daughter, El-lie Joyce.

She participated in h e r c h i l -

dren’s school activities and inspired them to excel in their pas-sions. She and her husband, George were faithful mem-bers of Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral, where she taught vacation Bible school, which she really loved.

After her children were grown, she began working for General Electric Credit Corporation, where she was recognized twice as Em-ployee of the Year. Upon entering the workplace af-ter many years, she became self taught and proficient in computer skills. She loved her work, and especially working for Rich Boruta, head of the GE Houston of-fice. For 19 years after she retired, her cherished friend, Rich and his wife, Annma-rie, stayed in touch with her to the present date.

She made it a point to keep up with everyone she knew, and there were many, as she never met a stranger. She kept notebooks on all of her friends and spent most of her day making phone calls to stay in touch with them. It was most important to her to acknowledge every gesture of thoughtfulness with a note of appreciation.

Jennie will be remem-bered for her compassion,

positive attitude, devotion to God and family, passion for life and her love and support of animals. She upheld and exuded the highest moral character and ethical con-duct. She saw the good in everyone and she inspired and appreciated everyone she knew. Her bright smile and twinkling eyes abided in a humble and unassum-ing countenance – she had a presence without speaking a word. It was important to her to always be nice to every-one. Jennie lived her life for eternity and to please God. She prayed without ceasing and always acknowledged her answered prayers. They are still being answered. Everyone who knew Jennie will always love her.

Jennie was predeceased by her parents, Ellie and George Fotenopulos; her husband of 46 years, George Malavis; and her brother, Frank Fo-tenopulos. She is survived by her son, Nicholas George Malavis, of Houston; her daughter, Ellie Joyce Malav-is (fiancé, Randol Rodgers), of Houston; her beloved sis-ter, Lillie Drossos of Dal-las; niece, Debbie Drossos, of Dallas; nephew/Godson, John Drossos (wife, Chris-tine); grand-nieces, Alexan-dra Drossos and Madeline Drossos; grand-nephew An-gelo Drossos, all of Dallas; her beloved cousin, Ellie Panos Callis, of Dallas; and many friends and family, too numerous to list but not for-gotten.

The family extends grati-tude to Dr. Albert Raizner, Dr. James Muntz, Dr. Rob-ert E. Jackson and A-Med Hospice for their care of Jennie, along with caregiv-ers Martha Poa, Margie Sproule, Silvia Gonzales, Elizabeth Hunt, Marilou Cruz, Sopheak Chan, Annie Benton and Karen Vogel for their devotion and loving care.

The funeral services were conducted this past Monday morning, the 10th of Septem-ber, at St. Basil the Great Greek Orthodox Church in Houston, where interment followed at Forest Park Westheimer Cemetery.

Honored to serve as pall-bearers during the services were Norman Ros Putman, Dan Edmundson, Benton White, David Ray, Ben Fra-sier and Stephen Bonnette. Serving as honorary pall-bearer was Phil Martin.

In lieu of customary re-membrances, memorial con-tributions in Jennie Malavis’ name may be directed to An-nunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 3511 Yoakum Blvd., Houston, TX, 77006.

LEGAL NOTICEIN THE DISTRICT COURT

OF HUGHES COUNTYSTATE OF OKLAHOMACase No. PB-2018-54

IN THE MATTER OF THE ESTATES OF ROBERT NEWTON ROBERTS, Deceased, and EUNICE L. ROBERTS, deceased

COMBINED NOTICE TO CREDITORS AND NOTICE OF HEARING (58 O.S. § 245-247)

To: All persons interest in the Estates of Robert Newton Roberts and Eunice L. Roberts, deceased You are hereby notified that on the 12th day of September, 2018 the Petitioner, Bob Wayne Roberts c/o Blake T. Deen of the Deen Law Office, 207 West Main Street, Suite 200, Norman, OK 73069, Attorney for Petitioner, filed in the District Court of Hughes County a Petition for Summary Administration, Appointment of Special Administrator, and Admission of Will to Probate. The Petitioner has alleged that Robert Newton Roberts and Eunice L. Roberts, deceased, died testate on October 24, 1977, and April 7, 1998, respectively, domiciled in and residing in the State of Alabama, and that the total value of the Decedent’s property in Oklahoma is less than $175,000. Attached to the Petition is an instrument purporting to be a certified copy of the Last Will and Testament of the Decedents. Petitioner has asked this Court to admit the Will to probate and for other summary proceedings pursuant to 58 O.S. 245, et seq. In an Order for Combined Notice entered on the 14th day of September, 2018, the Court found that it should dispense with the regular estate proceedings prescribed by law and order notice to creditors and issue an order for hearing upon the Petition for Summary Administration and Admission of Will to Probate, the final accounting, and petition for determination of heirs, devisees and legatees, and distribution. Pursuant to the Order for Combined Notice, all creditors having claims against Robert Newton Roberts and Eunice L. Roberts, deceased, are required to present the same with a description of all security interests and other collateral (if any) held by each creditor with respect to such claim, to Bob Wayne Roberts, Special Administrator, at the Deen Law Office, 207 West Main Street, Suite 200, Norman, OK 73069, addressed to Blake T. Deen attorney for the Special Administrator, on or before the following presentment date: October 22, 2018 or the same will be forever barred. Notice is also hereby given that a hearing will be held on the 6th day of November, 2018, at 3:30 o’clock p.m. at the Hughes County Courthouse, 200 North Broadway Street, Holdenville, Oklahoma, 74848, before Judge Allen. At the hearing the Court will decide whether to approve the Petition for Summary Administration and Admission of Will to Probate and the final account and petition for determination of heirs, devisees and legatees, and distribution of the Petitioner. You are hereby advised that you must file objections to the Petition for Summary Administration and Admission of Will to Probate and the final account and petition for determination of heirs, devisees and legatees, and distribution at least ten (10) days before the hearing and send a copy to the Petitioner in care of his attorney, Blake T. Deen, 207 West Main Street, Suite 200, Norman, Oklahoma 73069, or you will be deemed to have waived any objections. If you have no objections, you need not appear at the hearing or make any filings with the Court. If an objection is filed at least ten (10) days before the hearing, the Court will determine at the hearing whether the Will attached to the Petition shall be admitted to probate and whether summary proceedings are appropriate and, if so, whether the estate will be distributed and to whom the estate will be distributed.

The Holdenville Wol-verines bounced back from a Sept. 7 loss at Eufaula to beat the Ato-ka Wampus Cats Friday night, 38-13.

Wolverines Win 38-13Head coach Bill Wil-

liams said there were some mistakes made in the game, but he was happy with the win on the road.

“I thought they played real well,” Williams said.

“They made some mis-takes early in the second half, put us in a bind. But other than that, we didn’t handle the ball as well as I wanted to in the second half, which we gotta do. We’re nowhere close to

where we want to be, but going into district play, it’s always good to get a win.”

The Wolverines (2-1 overall) will play the Prague Red Devils (also 2-1 overall) at home in

a district game at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Williams said the Wol-verines will be working to improve some issues, mainly getting tougher mentally and getting bet-ter at battling larger foes.

“We gotta block big people,” Williams said. “And, our mentality. It’s not the Xs and Os, it’s the mentality. We’ve got to practice faster. We’ve got to practice harder and we have to have the mentality that we can block big people. We have to get off the ball harder. We have to do everything better. Do what we’re supposed to do, as hard as we can do it. We gotta do it harder.”

Friday’s offensive sta-tistics

- RushingJ.W. Tiger led the team

in rushing yards with 182 yards on 12 carries and had one touchdown.

Quarterback Matt Cox ran the ball 13 times for 77 yards for two touch-downs and two two-point conversions.

Cale Shepherd carried the ball 10 times for 127 yards and one two-point conversion.

Chase Gibbs ran the ball 23 times for 111 yards for two touch-downs.

Tavian Buck had one carry for five yards.

Ryan Taylor ran one time for three yards, while Hunter Davis had three carries for five yards and Cody Garlett ran twice for 12 yards.

- PassingCox completed one

pass on three attempts for 26 yards.

- ReceivingTaylor had one catch

for 26 yards. On defense, Gibbs had

three tackles and one interception. Buck also had one interception, along with a tackle.

As for tackles, Davis had two; Garlett, three; Sawyer Huff, one; Josh Strickland, six; Brandon Giles, three; Buck, one; Taylor, two; Shepherd, seven; Cox, one; and Al-bert Fixico had two.

Around Town......by John Bill MartinThings I have often pondered

The Year Was 1961

By John Bill MartinStaff Writer

There are some truths that I have not encountered yet in my long tenure on this earth. Maybe you can help me. For instance:

Diarrhea: What does it mean that four out of five suffer? Does it mean one out of five enjoys it?

Why do croutons come in airtight packages? Aren’t they just stale bread to begin with?

If people from Poland are called Poles, why aren’t people from Holland called Holes?

If a pig loses its voice, is it disgruntled? Why is a person who plays the piano called a

pianist but a person who drives a racecar is NOT called a racists?

If it is true that we are here to help others, then what exactly are others here for?

If lawyers are disbarred and clergymen defrocked, then doesn’t it follow that electricians are delighted, musicians de-noted, cowboys deranged, models deposed, tree surgeons de-

barked and dry cleaners depressed? If Fed Ex and UPS were to merge, would they be called Fed

UP?Do Lipton Tea employees take coffee breaks? What hair color do they put in the blank space on the drivers’

license of bald men?I thought about how mothers feed their babies

with tiny little spoons and forks, so I wonder what Chinese mothers use. Toothpicks???

Why do they put pictures of criminals up in the Post Office? What are we supposed to do, write them? Why don’t they put their pictures on post-age stamps so the mailmen can look for them when they deliver the mail?Is it true that you never really learn to swear until

you learn to drive? If a cow laughed, would milk come out of her nose?Whatever happened to Preparations A through G?Just sayin’.

School athletes, Joe Moeller and Russell Robinson, ac-cepted full scholarships from Tulsa University this week and will play football at the school under coach Glenn Dobbs.

Moeller and Robinson signed letters of intent Tues-day with the university’s as-sistant coach Bo Bolinger. The two had talked with Dobbs at Tulsa earlier.

Moeller played both end and quarterback for the Wol-verines last fall and was se-lected to the All-Sooner Star Conference team. He will enroll this fall and is expect-ed to be used at a halfback position or at end.

Robinson was a line stal-wart for HHS during the 1960 campaign, alternat-ing between tackle and end for Wolverine coach Gene Mears. Robinson also han-dled some of the kicking duties. The husky senior will delay his enrolment at

the university until the sec-ond semester to complete six months active duty training in the Army.

Another Holdenville grid standout, Jack Hughes, is considering several offers from area colleges but has made no definite commit-ments as yet. Hughey was also All-Conference at his fullback slot and was runner up in the SSC scoring race last fall.

Fun, Food and Fellow-ship! It doesn’t get any better than this when the Red Hatters get together! We only had six to travel to Pete’s Place in Krebs but the fun was there just same! Glenda Stinson was our hostess and she really did things up right! Sharon Dilday fixed little brown sacks with red ribbon that tied the ends together and inside were lots of little Jr. Candies. Thanks, Sharon! We didn’t open them un-til after we ate and the Jr. mints really hit the spot!

After everyone ordered,

Red Hatters enjoy trip to Krebs!Red Hatters enjoying a delicious meal at Pete’s Place were Frances Vega-Ruiz, Randa Phillips, Lynn Marquis, Sharon Dilday, Shirley Harkey and the hostess, Glenda Stinson (seated).

Lynn Marquis collected $2.00 from everyone for our prom people. She then told about the McAlester Red Hatters inviting the Holdenville club to their Bingo party next month. It is complete with a salad bar, potato bar and dessert bar. She said that everyone would win at least 2 prizes and that they were very nice prizes. Everyone agreed that this would not only be different but fun as well as meeting new Red Hatters.

Glenda had brought table decorations which she and her husband, Wayne,

had made our of wood and metal. It looked like miniature hat racks full of Red Hats! It was very un-usual and so artistic! She had everyone write down their names and then the names were put in a jar and drawn out one at a time for the four prizes that she had brought. Sharon Dil-day won a set of station-ary and a Red Hat picture frame. Randa Phillips won 3 bracelets and a matching watch. Frances Vega-Ruiz won 2 gold bracelets, a beaded bracelet and a red hat key chain. Lynn won Bath & Body vanilla body

cream and a beaded brace-let and matching bracelet. We all won something ex-cept for Shirley Harkey which she said was fine as she enjoyed watching ev-eryone else win. Randa said that since she had won so many bracelets, she gave Shirley one of hers. Wasn’t that sweet!

Kelly, our waitress, started bringing our salad. Kelly is also a 10th grade English teacher. She did a really good job and we were proud of have her! Before we began, Shirley not only blessed our food but the safe trip and expressed our love to our Lord and Savior. It was the sweetest prayer. We ate family style passing

around the spaghetti, meatballs etc. and that delicious bread. It was a wonderful meal with lots of visiting and laughter all around.

We really missed all of our sister Red Hatters who couldn›t attend and hope to see them next month!!

There was no shopping on this trip as Glenda had a family birthday party to attend and Sharon›s granddaughter was getting married. But it was really fun and we all had a good time!

Those attending were Frances Vega-Ruiz, Randa Phillips, Lynn Marquis, Sharon Dilday, Shirley Harkey and our hostess, Glenda Stinson.
