Tasman District and Nelson City are ready to welcome visitors for the summer season. Recent storm events have certainly had a dramatic effect on some residents within both Nelson and Tasman, however, we are ready for our normal influx of visitors from throughout New Zealand and internation-ally. All major tourist attractions are open and ready to receive visitors. The Pohara Campground is open. Totaranui Campground is open, but this year is acces-sible only by boat from either Port Tarakoe or Marahau, so is a true wilderness experi-ence not to be missed. The Abel Tasman National Park is open be-tween Marahau and Awaroa and accessible by walking track, kayaks or water taxi. The last piece of walking track is being worked on by the Department of Conserva-

tion and is expected to be open within days. Contact the Department of Conservation website for current information. Motueka Holiday Park is open as is Kaiteriteri and Ta-hunanui.While the state highway 60 between Takaka and Collingwood is currently one lane, the west of Golden Bay is still freely accessible. Golden Bay is one of my favorite destina-tions with Farewell Spit, Wharariki Beach, Te Waikoropupu Springs and Harwoods Hole among my destinations of choice com-plementing Nelson City as one of the nicest towns in the country all well recognised by international travelers, as well as the alpine experience at Lake Rotoiti. Plenty of fine dining, beaches and relaxation await all those who come to our region over this period. Invite them in we are still open for business.

Happy HolidaysWaimea Weekly advertising manager Sue Davies, left, with winners of this year’s Shop ‘n’ Win competition the Clayton family and Eyebright owner Adrienne Owen, centre. The family are from left; Jono, Shane and Gill. Photo: Andrew Board.

The winners of this year’s Shop ‘n’ Win competi-tion, and $5000 cash, is a family of three from Wakefield. The Clayton family filled out just one entry form for the competition, which runs in retail stores around Richmond for six weeks leading up to Christmas. This year 48,000 entries were submit-ted, an incredible amount and up on last year’s promotion. Shop ‘n’ Win is a Waimea Weekly promotion and was drawn by Richmond police.Gill Clayton says the entry was filled out at Eye-bright while she was buying Christmas tree dec-orations for children. She is blind so it was up to

Jono to fill in the lucky form.“It was a real team effort, Shane makes the mon-ey, I spent it and Jono filled in the form,” she says. They say they were “absolutely over-the-moon” with the win and have a few ideas of where the money will go.“The first thing is getting Jono a new cell phone; he has been saving up for ages to buy a new one so I think we’ll have to look at getting that for him.”Being the co-owner of the store where the win-ner entry was filled out, Adrienne Owen also won $1000 cash. The promotion has now run annually for five years.

Peasants set to rock the house on New Year’s Eve

The Peasants’ drummer Chris Phillips is predicting big things for Trafalgar Square Count-down.The National Smokefreerock-quest winners will be head-lining Nelson’s hottest New Year’s Eve concert, and they’re chomping at the bit to perform in front of thousands of people in their hometown.Following a whirlwind 2011, The Peasants have become one of New Zealand’s top young indie-pop acts, and will soon be heard all over the country’s radio stations.Their debut single Let It Go is due for a February release, but its some of their latest songs that will be heard for the first time down Trafalgar St.“We’ve been writing a whole lot of new stuff, so one thing that people can expect is new songs,” says Chris. “We’re hoping to surprise peo-ple with a performance they’ve

never seen before.”The New Year’s Eve concert is expected to pull around 3000 people and Chris says it is “awe-some” to be able to play in front of crowds that size when they have just finished, or are still, attending secondary school. “We love it eh, we entered rock-quest ...and now we’re jumping straight into it. We’re all really excited.”The Trafalgar Square Count-down begins at 8:30pm on De-cember 31. It is alcohol free. The band features Garin Col-lege students Georgia Nott, Chris and Abbey Phillips, Jo-seph Corban-Banks, Clark Hinton, Holly Tippler and Ru-pert Wockner. The Peasants have also been included in the Sundial Square Summer Sounds lineup. To check out The Peasants, visit them at www.facebook.com/th-epeasants.music

Mike Colley never expected that the motorcy-cles he grew up with would one day be called vintage. His pride and joy, a 1955 BSA Golden Flash, will be going on display at the Stoke Me-morial Hall on January 7 and 8, as part of the Nelson Classic and Vintage Motorcyle Club Inc’s Motorcycle Show.Mike grew up in England and always had a pas-sion for English motorcyles. But it was only in 2000 that he started collecting the bikes from his yesteryear. “I wasn’t able to afford good bikes in those days, so it’s nice to be able to do it now,” he says. “They are vintage bikes. They’re certainly not high speed bikes.”Mike says all the clubs members are just “custo-dians” of the motorcycles and want to keep them in the best possible condition. The expo starts at 9am on both days. Adults are $5 and children are free. There will be a swap meet on the Sunday from 9am until 12noon.For Information please contact [email protected]

Wild Tracks is a full-throttle buggy adventure that will leave you dusty, muddy and gasping for more. John and Maree Squire look forward to welcoming you to their playground in Upper Stanley Brook Rd, Tapawera, where you will find a day of entertainment for the whole family and a buggy adventure that will have the ‘big kids’ laughing and screaming. John, the chief guide, leads a team of three buggies – complete with independent suspension and a roll cage – around the 6km purpose built track, over, under and through obstacles. “I’m usually up at the house setting up the barbeque and games for the rest of the group and all you can hear is screams and laughing in the valley,” says Maree.A great adventure all year round, John says driving the buggies is stimulating when dry but “giggle material” when wet, as you drift around the track. There are several infamous features on the course that get the heart rate going. The drop-off is the steepest bank at Wild Tracks and when you’re at the top you’d swear it was almost vertical, but John says it’s only 42 degrees. Little Mt Arthur lets drivers climb the big slope and roll backwards from the top. Motion sick-ness is a set of bumps that pitches the buggies on three wheels; there’s another feature called slippery when wet, but we shouldn’t ruin all the surprises, laughs John.Safety is a big feature at Wild Tracks. They pro-vide all the gear needed, including wet weather gear, but it’s still recommended you bring a change of clothes, for one reason or another. John and Maree say that people often remark it was much more than they expected, and that it’s not just a drive around a paddock on a quad bike. From experience Wild Tracks is most fun

with a big group of family and friends to share the laughs and thrills, says one local. With five people on the track at one time, those wait-ing for their go at base camp can play games like bad-minton, and volleyball or have a shot at the awesome remote control tank battles. John and Maree say if you’ve got a large group just give them a call and they will work out something out for you.The adventure starts from as little as $15. The 15 minute ride is just a teaser but once you get in the seat you’ll just want more. To get in touch with John and Maree call 03 522 4950 or visit www.wildtracks.co.nz.

Once upon a time a lady found a home away from home…The place she’d always lived was a wonderful abode with a sprawling backyard filled with trees and a garden that never seemed to end. It had been the perfect spot for her children to roam, but they’d left this nest a long time ago.

She knew the time had come to move herself and she knew exactly what she wanted. There would be plenty of space to relax, she would have all the creature comforts, and her home would be so much easier to upkeep.

The neighbours would be a friendly bunch, they’d always have fun when they got together, and of course there would be a garden to keep her green fingers busy.

That left quite a few boxes to tick, but after searching far and wide, she decided there was only one answer.

Its name was Oakwoods and with that her new chapter started….

Experience the nostalgia of some significant but almost forgotten movies on the flickering screen in the great outdoors – SolarCity Summer Movies are coming to the Tasman District, with Tapawera, Upper Moutere, Wakefield and St Arnaud on the itinerary this year. The Tasman District Council has worked with the Nelson City Council festivals’ team and with community groups to make the movies part of what’s happening locally. The St Arnaud screening is in conjunction with Festival Nelson Lakes, a weekend of events and activities; the Wakefield School PTA is fundraising for a playground development; the Moutere Hills

Community Centre is raising funds for renovations, and in Tapawera the sport and recreation group is fundraising to provide activities for local young people. Summer Movies this year will be screened on a new brighter projector. For those who understand techie details it’s a 7000 ANSI Lumens High Definition Projector. This year’s movies are The Five Pennies with Danny Kaye, National Velvet starring the young Liz Taylor, The Misfits with Marilyn Monroe and Clark Gable and SilentAntics – a medley of silent clips with Harold Lloyd, Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton and more.

Antony says he wants to get the word out to the deaf community about Silent Antics: “All of these short films use the technique of placing text screens in between the action to provide the information needed to follow the storyline making them accessible to hearing impaired people,” he says. “Even for children who can’t read yet there’s plenty of action to keep up their interest.” SolarCity Summer Movies run from 9pm - 11pm (movie starts at dusk) Cost: $2 adult, $1 child. Pack a picnic, bring a rug or your couch, wear warm clothes or pyjamas and pocket a torch to light your way home.

SUMMER 2012 9

Rivers are set to make waves this summer as a hot place to cool off. Locals and tourists can discover the beauty tucked away between the mountains of the lo-cal ranges at popular swimming holes such as Lee River and Aniseed River.Less than a half hour drive from the center of Nelson, you can pack a picnic lunch and get away for the day with family or friends. Sim-ply turn down River Terrace Rd, off the State Highway in Brightwater, and then onto Lee Valley Rd. Holidaymakers will be spoilt for choice for the perfect spot for a picnic and swim, with a bridge down the road allowing vehicles to cross onto Mead Rd, giving access to the other side of the river. The Meads Reserve offers picnic tables and toi-let facilities; it’s a great place to bring along a barbecue and cook up some steak and sausages on a sunny day. Found just across the bridge, it’s a hilly area providing plenty of places to park your car and enjoy a more secluded lunch and swim.If you stay on Lee Valley Rd you will come to Firestones Reserve, with larger flat expanses to play a game of cricket or rugby. With toilets, barbecues, picnic tables and the stunning river to take a dip, it is arguably one of the best swim-ming holes in Nelson. The native trees provide a beautiful backdrop and plenty of shady areas.Though the recent deluge threatened to leave Nelsonians high and dry, the rivers have had time to clear up and are once more open for swimmers this summer. In its peak last year, the Roding River in Ani-seed Valley was visited by 2000 people in one day.

The freshest spot to cool off

This time of year it is a great op-portunity to spend quality time with friends and family who may be visiting from around the coun-try and even overseas.I am sure we all wish for them to have a safe and memo-rable visit to our region.Even though we live in a generally safe and low crime area, we still need to take some precau-tions, such as locking and securing our homes and reviewing security. Also check with neigh-bours and family and report any suspicious activity to police at the time. If a police patrol is available, a quick check is usually possible depending on other priority oc-currences.Sadly, Christmas and the New Year is also a busy time for those of us who work in the area of Family Violence. It is known that a number of contributing factors responsible for triggering family violence incidents are more likely to be present during this time of year, in particular financial stress, alcohol and drug abuse and child custody disputes. We ask that

people exercise common sense if they find themselves in a situation with any family member that may escalate.Often it is a matter of removing yourself from that environment

and taking time out to enable things to settle down so that any dis-pute can be discussed later when emotions have calmed or either party is no longer under the influence of alcohol or drugs. If parents have shared custody of children over the holiday period, please make sure plans

that each parent has are clearly discussed between each other to remove any confusion that could lead to a dispute.Over the years I have been called to many such disputes at this time of year. These can be very dis-tressing for the children and the parents purely because they had not communicated in an open and mature way.We at the Nelson Bays Communi-ty police do wish you all a happy and safe Christmas and New Year in our region and on our roads.

Happy holidays from your local police

Quinney’s Bush Camp going strong in 50th yearQuinney’s Bush Camp in Motupiko is celebrating its 50th birthday this month – but it might never have opened if the founder hadn’t received a “sign from God” says Mark Quinney. In 1961 the late Ray Quinney proposed starting a camp site on an area of the family farm as a means to raise funds for a new vicarage at Tapawera. Ray decided to put an ad-vertisement in the local paper to announce the opening and it was all set to go. However, later that day when walk-ing around the overgrown and dry area, Ray had a change of heart and called the paper to cancel the advert because he thought the risk of fire too great. But chance intervened and the advertisement ran in the next edition and thanks to that error, generations of Kiwi families have enjoyed summering at the camp ground. “Dad (Ray) had already started thinking about plan B, but meanwhile the advert went in the paper any-way. We are Christians so we see that as God’s way of saying ‘no, you’re not backing out of it, you’re going to have a campground here’,” says Mark. The camp boomed in popularity over the years and although no booking system was in place more than $200,000 in donations from campers was testament to the number of families that frequented the camp-ground. While the donations were distributed to many different Christian organisations and chari-

ties, Ray’s legacy was a 9.8 hectare spot filled with families each summer. But when Ray passed in 1996 the future of Quinney’s Bush was thrust into jeopardy.Mark says the closure of the camp was certainly on the cards as it became more difficult to meet health and safety regulations of the Tasman District Council and Occupa-tional Health and Safety (OSH). “Dad was having to up-grade the place, and he didn’t want anything to do with the rigmarole and bureaucracy associated with it so the place started to go backwards,” says Mark.Mark and Marama Quinney took on a camp site with many unsafe amusements, an unreliable water supply and primitive amenities, so they immediately set about

upgrading the facilities. Today Quinney’s Bush has eve-rything you need and more in a camp ground including amusements like flying foxes, a huge waterslide, confi-dence course, skatepark and a BMX track, all of which are safety regulated. Mark says Quinney’s Bush Camp aims is to provide an experience here that will help draw families together, and if customer retention is anything to go by it seems they have achieved that goal. “We are on to our third genera-tion. Grandchildren are coming here now when it was the grandparents who used to come with their parents as chil-dren. It’s been round for a while now, and people seem to really like it,” says Mark.

Mark Quinney is anticipating another hectic summer as Quinney’s Bush Camp heads into its 50th summer in Motupiko. Photo: Jonathan McKeown.

Tasman’s beaches the place to beNelson’s most iconic landmark is also its most popular summer destination. Where would the region be without Tahunanui Beach? Well we were close to finding out following the big flood, But it has now been given the all-clear by council, giving thousands of holiday makers their perfect summer spot back for 2012.Tahunanui Beach has everything you need, if you don’t want to surf; the sand, the people, the water. It has summer in New Zealand written all over it.The location of Tahunanui Beach offers much more than just a swim and a tan. There are cafes, bars, restaurants, tennis courts and the Tahunanui Fun Park. The park features a hydroslide, mega slide, bumper boats, mini golf and miniature trains. There is also a barbecue area. But Tahunanui Beach isn’t the only beach within Nelson’s reach. Rabbit Island is only a short drive outside

of Richmond and offers a similar experience with plenty more space to barbecue. Rabbit Island is often the first port of call for picnickers, and with its own cycle track and equestrian facilities, there’s plenty to see and do.Kaiteriteri Beach is the beginning of the golden sand. The small township of Kaiteriteri wouldn’t be anywhere without its luxurious beach that brings in thousands of Christchurch residents every year. Kaiteriteri is the gateway to the Abel Tasman and is one of the most popular destinations for summer in the whole country. It will also be home to the Miss (and Mr) Kaiteriteri Competition on January 2, starting at 11:30am. The following day brings beach volleyball, followed by water ski races on the 4th.All three beaches topped a Tasman District Council report for the most popular swimming areas in the Nelson/Tasman region.

Need to break up your holiday with a bit of re-tail therapy? Richmond provides two wonderful places to not only shop, but catch some lunch or enjoy a coffee or wine.In Richmond, the Mall claims to be the centre of it all and it’s hard to go past. The Richmond Mall is the biggest shopping centre in the top of the South Island and has more than 70 stores from clothing to food to jewellery and super-markets. A shopping visit to Richmond cannot

be made without visiting the Mall. It runs next to the town’s main street, Queen St which is also a vibrant shopping strip. Queen St has stores running along both sides and offers the relaxed setting of Sundial Square to sit back and enjoy a break between your purchases. Richmond is the region’s second largest shopping centre af-ter Nelson City and is a wonderful place to relax after all that swimming and sunbathing at the beach.

There have been several changes at the Pigeon Valley Steam Museum in recent times making it all the more fascinating for people who appreciate the way our forefathers lived and worked. The name Higgins Park has been given to the grounds of the complex and is home to the Pigeon Valley Steam Museum, Rover Car Club, Nelson Vintage Engine & Machinery Club, and a new group in the last two years, the Historic Transport Museum Trust. Collected together within this complex is a wide range of machinery and exhibits from days gone by.

Here you can enjoy working and static steam engines, vintage tractors and small engines, many of the old trucks that were a part of Nelson’s earlier years, military vehicles, the facinating Rural Life Museum building, and an old time working sawmill. On open days, rides are given behind a Traction Engine, and also on a Rail Jigger around the Bush Tramway. The Park is always open and is a wonderful spot for a picnic and a wander around, and the children will enjoy the playground. Over the summer holiday period the Pigeon Valley Steam Museum is open every day.

A Tasman bed and breakfast owner says international interest in the Great Taste Cycle Trail on Rabbit Island encouraged her to check it out over the weekend.Pauline Skelton and her husband John cycled the beginning of the track so they could give a better review when feilding calls from Australia.“I’m doing the biking trail so I know what I’m talking about to my guests,” says Paul-ine. “We’ve got a couple of websites that are always contacting us and giving us up-dates and it’s very much out there. I think it’s going to be good for tourism.”Pauline says some sunny weather on Sun-day motivated her to get the bike out of the garage. “It’s always in the news so I thought we better check it out. We haven’t got time to do the boat but it’s a fantastic idea.”The unique link between Rabbit Island and Mapua was opened in October, but has since been a very popular destination for tourists as well as locals. When complete, the whole trail - includ-ing a section in the Motueka River Valley - will cover a distance of 162-175km and will run from Nelson Airport, to Rich-mond, out to Tapawera, along the Mo-tueka River Valley to Riwaka, and then back to Richmond through Motueka and Mapua.Pauline and John plan to cycle the length of New Zealand in 2012, starting in Nel-son.

SUMMER 2012 21

A few years ago there was a brilliant ad on televi-sion advising kiwis ‘don’t leave home ‘til you’ve seen your country,’ and we think that is great ad-vice with regard to Murchison. Only an hour and a half away, at most, from Richmond, Murchison has attractions galore and even better, is packed full with friendly peo-ple. A trip to Murchison is a trip to relaxation, adven-ture or fun, whichever you feel like. Murchison is the District’s southern-most township and is a central base for the many outdoor activities in the area, including historic gold trails, rafting and kayaking, horse treks, tramping, hunting and fishing. Local business owners are prepared for their busy summer season as Murchison is a Mecca for visitors seeking the great outdoors. There are many accommodation options avail-able ranging from back packers, campgrounds and motels to luxury lodges in spectacular set-tings.Outdoor activities include white water rafting and kayaking, jet boats, horse treks and moun-

tain biking for the thrill seekers while the more sedate amongst us can enjoy fishing, walking or just relaxing beside the river or swimming in one of the many safe swimming holes. The township boasts cafes, pubs, gift shops and antique store, a supermarket and a general store, a petrol station and a hospital. Recognised as the “Whitewater Capital” of New Zealand, nearby rivers include the Gowan River, Mangles River, Matiri River, Glenroy River, Matakitaki River, Maruia River and the Buller, with many excellent whitewater runs ranging from Class 2 to 4 whitewater. They are also world renowned for fly fishing for trout in crystal-clear water. Being on the edge of both the Kahurangi and Nelson Lakes National Parks, there are plenty of interesting walks nearby rang-ing from 10-minute strolls to multi day tramps.A 15-minute drive takes you to Lyle Creek, the historic gold mining town’s old site. With plenty of DOC information and spectac-ular scenery, it’s well worth a drive. Just a little further down the road you’ll find New Zealand’s longest swing bridge, across the Buller Gorge.

Children can come into the store and guess the number of carrots. The correct and closest 25 kids will then win a ticket to the kids activities at the Brightwa-

An extreme lack of vitamin A can cause blindness. In fact, in the developing world, vitamin A deficiency is the leading cause of blindness. The winners of the competition will be an-nounced on January 9.

Skate tour grinds back to TasmanThe Tasman Skatepark Tour is back and better than ever. The tour showcases the best boarders and bikers the region has to offer. It is now open to scooter riders as well, which has become in-creasingly popular within the past 12 months. It’s free to enter and there are plenty of hot prizes up for grabs thanks to Cheapskates, Village Cy-cles and The Edge. The first stop on the tour is Mapua on January 4. It will be followed by Takaka on January 7, Ta-pawera on January 11, Motueka on January 14, Brightwater on January 18, before concluding at the Richmond Skatepark on January 21.Master Pilot will be performing live at many of the skate comps. For more info visit www.tyc.co.nz or phone 543 8525.

Johnnie’s trio lands Jazzfest opportunityJohnnie Cameron is grateful for his spot on the Woollaston Nelson Jazz and Blues Festival line-up; he just hopes the region’s residents can come out en mass to see the coun-try’s leading jazz musicians at work. The Kaiteriteri resident is a former Garin College and Nelson College student and has landed three per-formances during the festival with his band, the Johnnie Cameron Trio.Johnnie is a former Nelson Smoke-freerockquest winner and will be joined by former NMIT bass tu-tor Sam Atkins and one of the re-gion’s most promising drummers, Sam Edmonds, of pop punk band Recommended By Your Mom. “It’s quite cool because Sam is probably the best bass player the region has to offer and he’s a great vocalist as well, so the biggest thing I’ve liked about it so far is that everyone is so vital about the music and it comes across in the performance,” says Johnnie. The 2012 Woollaston Jazz and Blues Festival will celebrate its 21st birthday with a six day musical party. There will be music in parks, in bars, on Nelson’s city streets and events right across the Tasman re-gion to Golden Bay. The festival will feature more than 200 musi-cians, 50 events and an audience

of over 30,000. With a busy sched-ule of a dozen weddings on top of Christmas functions and other events around the region, Johnnie says the trio is most excited about getting their first chance to play at jazz fest. “It’s a different ball-game to that stuff because the material is a lot different. We’re very lucky to be in there in terms of being so young. That was the coolest thing for us, just having that opportunity to earn money to play in an event with other amazing artists from throughout New Zealand.”Johnnie says the crowd can expect a “real mixed bag” when it comes to their style. They are heavily in-fluenced by Robin Ford, who was known for jazzing up gospel and blues songs. But the trio are also likely to play a number of originals with a more “pop, jazz, blues” in-fluence.The Johnnie Cameron Trio will be performing at the Vic on Monday January 2, Wednesday January 4 and Friday January 6. All their sets go from 4pm-7pm and they want people to bring their guitar along too, to jam with the band. The event kicks off with the Port Nelson Jazz in the Park on Janu-ary 2, featuring Oval Office, Tessa Quayle, Aaron Saxon’s ANZAC Fu-sion, Spiral and Red Hot & Dixie. Tickets are available from Every-man Records.

Johnnie Cameron will be fronting the John-nie Cameron Trio in January’s Woollaston Jazz and Blues Festival. Johnnie is a former Garin College student and a Nelson Smokefre-erockquest winner. Jazz fest features concerts throughout Nelson and Tasman.

Marty’s Kain to play in front of home crowdSaxton Road seems like a fitting nickname for the wicket at the home of Nelson Cricket, Saxton Oval. And Richmond’s Marty Kain hopes the spinner’s paradise will help his chances of playing for Central Districts Stags when they host the Otago Volts at Saxton Oval on January 2, in the region’s first/only HRV Cup game of the season. The 23 year-old left arm spinner, who relocated from Christchurch over the summer, might just get his chance to make his HRV Cup debut on home soil if coach Alan Hunt opts for two spinners.Marty is a former Waimea Intermediate School and Waimea College pupil, but finished his final years of secondary school in Christchurch. He moved there for the opportunities, gaining selection in various Canterbury age-grade representative sides, before making his debut for the Canterbury Wizards. But it’s now new opportunities that have led Nelson’s top cricketer back to the region for good, as well as escaping the earthquakes. “I guess it’s the opportunites. My parents are here and also after the earthquake I thought Nelson would be a nice place to move back to,” he says. Marty was involved in pre-season training with the Stags in Napier, and had one appearance in the four-day series, more recently being used as

12th man. He knows his chances will come but he would love nothing more than to play in front of 3000 Nelsonians. “It’d be absolutely fantastic if I got

the opportunity. Here in Nelson it’s a good spinners wicket, so it depends whether they take in two spinners or how they see the game going.”While he is yet to play domestic Twenty20, Marty says it is “more suited” to his game. “I’m quite a negative bowler so I’d love to get the opportunity there.”He expects a bumper crowd with holiday numbers to spike the region’s population during January. Marty has alligned himself with Athletic College Old Boys, making three appearances so far. He says the reason behind the move to the club was the appointment of headcoach Gary MacDonald, whom Marty was

mentored by in Christchurch. “He coached me for about ten years now. He’s brought my career on a long way so I felt obliged to go and play with him. He’s helped me so much, so it’s great.” Marty’s main goal is much more team orientated than individual. If CD can win the HRV Cup they are one step closer to qualification in India’s Champions League Twenty20. “Hopefully there will be an opportunity go over to India on spinning tracks.”

Richmond’s Marty Kain is eager to get the call up from the Central Districts Stags. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Blokarts set sail for the summer

Vortex owner Murray Show rides in one of his blokarts at the course at Richmond Park. The blokart track is yet to be officially opened. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

They say it’s the most fun you can have on three wheels, but the truth is, it’s even funner on two. Richmond will be home to the world’s first blokart track, up to new modern standards. The track has opened at Richmond Park, despite still being extended. Its owner, Murray Shaw, says the track will be contructed to a standard that allows for official competitions.Because of pedestrians and dogs, it is quite restrictive as to where you are can ride a blokart. But that was part of the reason behind finding their own purpose-built course.Experts can harness winds to power blokarts up to 60kph, not bad when a lot of it is spent cruising around with one of the back wheels in the air. While there is a big race planned for early 2012, Murray is spending the summer helping locals learn the ropes of the extreme sport. The track is to be officially opened in the coming months. To contact Murray, phone 0800 286 7839.

SUMMER 2012 25

Well folks, I know it is the season to be jolly but sitting here under grey skies for yet another morning, with Nelson in Civil Defence Emergency status my thoughts go out to all those of you who have been affected by this, yet another, natural disaster. Many will be spending their Christmas with family and friends as they cannot use their homes. This can always be a good and happy thing but returning to a red stickered house is not. All my family suffered this in Christchurch and I am so sorry to see Nelson folk in the same boat. We are a resilient bunch us Kiwi’s and I know everyone will get through with the help and support of neighbours and friends. I truly hope that 2012 brings sunshine, happiness and

good things for our beautiful little country and our wonderful region. Back to the garden... As a start to the New Year I thought I would do a bit of a tour around some of the local garden centres and see what was new or different in the shops.Mitre10 had a lovely red and white Christmas display and looked very festive. The two new plants for me were Lillium “Blackout” – not black but a deep reddish lily which looked amazing. Also a new leuchanthemum “Paladin”, a tall white Shasta type daisy, which would look stunning in a mass at the back or middle of a border. They had a great selection of petunias including “Black Velvet” a true black which would look stunning teamed with orange and white. Bunnings garden centre was also

looking really great with a lovely stand of indoor plants at good prices. They also have some new varieties of old favourities.“Garinea” is a new winter hardy gerbera. Smaller in flower than the potted hybrids but lovely looking with a good colour range and not a bad price. Maybe even I could keep these going through a season ( I tend to treat them as annuals – seem to kill them off somehow!) Also a new landscape carnation- dianthus- called the “Scent of Heaven” Angel series. These are very hardy perennials with the old fashioned strong perfume of cloves. Lovely dotted in clumps along a sunny border or in pots and tubs near a doorway.Bay Nurseries was busy as ever and had the best display of lovely healthy

looking hanging baskets. The fuchsia stand is also looking magnificent with literally dozens of colours and flower types to choose from. These are a really excellent standby to brighten a shady spot and with a good cutback after flowering will provide pleasure for many years. They also stock an excellent range of Hydrangeas in many different colours and flower types from the oakleaf to the lacecap and they are very healthy plants. Bay also stock a good range of perennials and annuals, many of which are grown by them so you know they will do well in our local gardens. Indoor plants are well displayed here also – you are spoiled for choice. If you are hunting for Wally Richards products Bay have a good range of these also.I will get out and about in January to some of our other garden outlets, just to try to bring you an overview and update on what’s new.

Not many really – cleaning up after water damage for most I would suggest.Check ties on larger plants – they could be loose after all the rain. If you are going away and have pots etc on decks that are in saucers it pays to take them out, turn the saucer upside down and sit the pot back on top. This will ensure that if we get rain the plants will not get waterlogged.Another tip is to put a course gravel in the base of the saucer so the roots of the plants are not sitting directly in the water. If you do this with all pots at time of planting you could save having to lift and reposition large heavy plants down the track.Keep pinching the laterals out of tomatoes and take some of the lower shoots from tall varieties to keep the weight of the plants more balanced.

Watch plants for mildew and fungus after all this wet weather. Roses, strawberries, petunias etc all suffer from this so a spray with skim milk mixed 1 part to 10 with water is a good deterrent or a Natures Way fungus spray is also good. New leaves on Vireya rhododendrons can also get powdery mildew at this time of year.base of the stem and use the gel as per the instructions. You will have to do this several times along the plant and if you are on good terms with the neighbour it may pay to go and find the source on their side also. This will carry the poison back to the roots and in time it should kill the plant. It will also kill any other plant it touches so use with caution. I do hope you had a Happy Christmas and wish all our readers a very happy and safe New Year.

Tasman Resource Management Plan

Draft Plan Changes– Water Metering– Managing Fire Risk for New Rural Dwellings Tasman District Council has prepared draft Plan changes to the Tasman Resource Management Plan for water metering and for managing fire risk for new rural dwellings.

SummaryWater MeteringThe Council is proposing to amend the Tasman Resource Management Plan water metering requirements to ensure they are consistent with the national regulations. The draft Plan change is intended to ensure that Council meets its obligations to continue to require water meters for nearly all water takes, including those less than 5 litres per second. The Council will continue to manage manual water meter returns, but is developing electronic reporting and recording systems to allow both Council and water users to take advantage of improvements in technology. The Council is also intending to amend the rules for taking water from storage. Water takes from dams will generally be permitted, however the effects of the damming at all times of the year will be managed through the consent to dam water.

Managing Fire Risk for New Rural DwellingsThe current Tasman Resource Management Plan (TRMP) provisions for managing the risk of fire in rural dwellings are inadequate and inconsistent with best practice requirements specified by the NZ Fire Service. Current camlock coupling requirements do not meet the requirements of the NZ Fire Service for fire appliances used to fight rural structure fires.A number of options for managing fire risk have been considered by the Council. These allow new home owners some discretion to choose the most appropriate fire risk management system for new dwellings where there is no appropriate water reticulation service provided.

Availability of the Draft Plan ChangesThe draft Plan changes are available for public inspection at Council’s Richmond office, and Motueka, Takaka and Murchison service centres. They are also available on the Council website (www.tasman.govt.nz) under ‘Policy/Plans/Tasman Resource Management Plan (TRMP)/Draft Planning Proposals’. Comments on the draft Plan changes can be sent to the Manager Policy, Tasman District Council, Private Bag 4, Richmond 7050 to be received by 4.30 pm on Tuesday 31 January 2012. An online response form can be completed via the Public Consultation webpage under ‘Policy’.

Consideration of the Draft Plan ChangeComments are invited on both draft Plan changes until 31 January 2012. Council will then consider all comments received and prepare and release a Proposed Plan Change to the Tasman Resource Management Plan in light of the public’s contribution.
