Some surprising things emerge from a Sunday brunch-time visit to Rang Mahal, that much-awarded bastion of elite Indian cuisine and culture, enhanced with sparkling 26th floor city centre views.

The food isn’t over-spiced and over-priced as upscale Indian eater-ies tend to be. And yet it is as authentic and exquisite as its maharaja

inspiration indicates, not least thanks to the three Indian chefs who lead the cooking team, led by Head Chef Rajan who has been with the restaurant since it opened, some 15 years.

Equating to a “palace of wind” or well-appointed sala, Rang Mahal’s enchanting ambiance transports you to the far pavilions of Rajasthan. Divided into two main areas by exquisitely carved  white stone arches and pillars, to one side is a delightful courtyard with elegant marble flooring surrounded by private enclaves and to the other the entire wall is floor-to-ceiling glass and an al-fresco terrace scoping the city.

Pucker green, cream and saffron pastels interweave with original artworks depicting Sidharthan scenes in watercolours and liquid gold, lavishly uphol-stered sofas, antique textile drapes and intricately carved zharonkas, regal antique window shutters that speak of hidden pleasures. Sensuously smooth sitar and tabla soundtracks play between evocative live classical Indian music sets from the resident band.

Centara Grand Beach Resort & Villas Krabi is located directly on its own beach at secluded Pai Plong Bay, one bay along from the main resort area of Ao Nang,

with its shops and entertainment outlets. Directly behind the resort is a verdant lime-stone formation of the kind that character-ises Krabi. Secluded, and with magnificent ocean views, the resort is accessed by a scheduled speedboat service from Noppa-ratthara Pier near Ao Nang. As a hideaway for couples and honeymooners, as a base for families and groups who adore the beauty of the ocean and unspoiled nature, or as a retreat for anyone who simply needs tran-quillity and privacy, the resort is a sublime hideaway.

LIVE IN STYLETraditional Thai architecture has inspired the design of the resort, with the rooms and villas looking out across the lush gardens or the calm blue ocean. Exceptional light and space is the theme of all the styles of accommodation, and natural material and fabrics harmonise with the beauty of the world outside.

Rooms and suites have the option of a plush king bed or two double beds, making them suitable for couples and for families. Each has a fully furnished balcony, large enough for lounging and for dining. Spa rooms are also available, each featuring private Jacuzzi on the balcony.

The villas offer a choice of one and two bedrooms, both of which feature an expansive furnished terrace, and sepa-rate lounging and dining areas. There is also the option of a villa with a private pool. Guests staying in our villas opt for absolute comfort for access to the exclusive Club Lounge and its signature three daily servings and evening cocktails are included.

The Sunday Brunch menus are so exten-sive that not even a real Maharaja would contemplate sampling everything at a sit-ting. One of the two menu rotations of at least 60 dishes each reads like this.

Indian drinks include sweet and salted lassis, the former sweet churned milk with a touch of saffron and pistachio, the latter salted churned milk with cumin powder. Plus Jal Jeera, lightly flavoured with cumin, lime and mint leaves, and fresh juices.

On the salad station there’s: Papri Chaat, semolina pancakes with yoghurt, tama-rind sauce and mint sauce; Boondi Raita, yoghurt with chickpea flour pearls; Bhel Kachori Khasta, an Indian appetizer made of flaky pastry; Dhokla, gram flour appetizer, flavoured with herbs; Paneer Zafrani Roll, cottage cheese dices marinated with Indian masala wrapped in bread; Murgh Kathi Roll, juliennes of chicken marinated in masala, wrapped in Indian bread; Mahi Kathi Roll, fish fillet marinated with herbs, wrapped in Indian bread; Prawn Stuffed Idli, a south Indian rice pancake stuffed with prawn; Kashmiri Nargisi Lamb, boiled egg coated with minced lamb preparation marinated with herbs, spices and deep-fried to perfec-tion; Kele Ki Tikki, deep-fried banana patty; Murgh Ki Tikki, deep-fried chicken patty fla-voured with herbs; Paneer Sevian Croquet, deep-fried cottage cheese patty topped with vermicelli; plus international salads.

This brings you to the Indian Live Kebab Station with: Murgh Malai Kebab, a del-icate combination of chicken and cream cheese, cooked in a tandoor; Methi Machli Kebab, boneless pieces of fish marinated in Indian spices, cooked in a tandoor; Subz Kebab, deep-fried mixed vegetable patties; Tandoori Salad, capsicum, cottage cheese, onions, pineapple and tomatoes, cooked in a clay oven; Kathi Kebabs — vegetar-ian, chicken, seafood, lamb and cheese wrapped in Indian bread.

The magnificent carving station boasts: Roasted whole leg of lamb marinated in Indian spices and herbs cooked in a tan-door; and Salted Crusted Whole roasted sea bass fish stuffed with garlic, onions and lemongrass.

A Street Food Of India section ranges: Vegetable Samosa, deep-fried puff pastry stuffed with potatoes and green peas, served with tamarind sauce; Bread Pakora, deep-fried bread slices stuffed with potato masala and herbs; Pao Bhaji, an any time snack of bread and potatoes.

Yet another station features South Indian dishes: Masala Dosa, thin flat bread stuffed with potatoes; Vada, an all-time favourite south Indian specialty made of gram flour; Sambhar, a lentil side dish; and Coconut Chutney tempered with mustard seeds and curry leaves.

Now we’re getting into the signature main course curries and breads: Jheenga Kadhai, wok fried prawns cooked with onions, tomatoes, Indian herbs and spices; Murgh Makhanwala, succulent chicken simmered in creamy fenugreek flavoured gravy; Mutton Vindaloo, spicy combination of mutton and potatoes, cooked in tomato gravy; Mutton DUM Biryani, layers of Basmati rice and spiced mutton; Palak Paneer, creamed spin-ach and cottage cheese flavoured with garlic; Bhindi Do Piazza, Okra, fried and cooked with sliced onions and spices; Vegetable Jai-puri, assorted seasonal vegetables in a yellow gravy; Bhature, deep-fried bread made of refined flour; Chana Masala, chickpea curry cooked with onions and tomatoes; Daal Rang Mahal, black lentils simmered overnight and laced with butter and cream; Daal Tadka, yellow lentils cooked with a blend of cumin and chilies; Plain steamed Basmati rice; Assorted Naan, Garlic Naan, Laccha Paratha, Tandoori Roti breads.

Indian dips, condiments and accom-paniments range multiple chutneys, spicy pickle and yoghurt formulations.

The house sugar or salt lassies are spot-on, but the allure of trying a bottle of Chateau Indage, a blend of Sauvignon and Semillon grapes, believe it or not hailing from Sabyadri, is tantalizing too.

Echeverria, including red carmenere which is low in acid and tannins does a wonderful job of complementing the richness and spiciness of the food. There’s even a good bubbly to go with the feast of flavours: Ivy Brew.

And so to dessert: Moong Daal Halwa, a desi ghee and lentil halwa; Gulab Jamun, cream cheese dumplings flavoured with cardamom; Kesari Phirni, Basmati rice reduced with milk and flavoured with saffron along with assorted international desserts, macaroons and ice creams.

For a digestive, the house masala tea encapsulates the ethos of proper Indian cuisine. Here some 61 different kinds of masala are blended in precise proportions to achieve a mixture that, when combined with freshly brewed Darjeeling tea and a dash of milk, produces a drink as irresistibly distinct as Rang Mahal’s finest dishes.

No need to visit the Pink City plains nor India’s silicon valleys for a taste of the maharaja high life. A far more con-venient proposition is Sunday Brunch (11.00am-2.30pm) right here.

SUBLIME RELAXATIONSPA Cenvaree is where you retreat to reach your inner peace, a haven of sen-sual treatments and therapies designed to smooth away cares, release body toxins, and revitalise muscles and skin. Set amid

the gardens and with suites looking out over the bay, the spa offers a menu of treatments based on natural herbs and oils, and tradi-tional massage techniques using hands, hot stones and salt compresses.

LEISURE FOR ALLCruises around the islands in the bay and along the wild Krabi coastline to explore the caves and lagoons, diving and snor-kelling trips and complimentary water sports including sailing, windsurfing, and kayaking offer fascinating leisure oppor-tunities. The youngsters, meanwhile, are kept busy and happy at the professionally supervised Kids’ Club, which has Camp

Safari for the younger ones and E-Zone for the teens.

One of the southern-most jewels of Thailand, Krabi is rich with pearly beaches, translucent waters, coral reefs, waterfalls and caves; gloriously green National Parks, hot springs and crystal-line pools of water.

Hundreds of tiny limestone islands dot the sparkling sea, making Krabi and the Andaman Sea a superb destination for island hopping. Those who enjoy diving, hiking and rock climbing will find a whole new world.

Porsche Thailand by AAS Auto Service Co., Ltd., sole authorized importer and distributor of Porsche cars in Thailand, presents the new Panamera for supercar fans who are looking for a flawlessly new Porsche.

The “Panamera Turbo” is the second generation of Panamera and the latest luxury sports saloon inspired by Porsche 911.

The new Porsche Panamera reconciles two contrasting characteristics more than ever before: the performance of a genuine sports car and the comfort of a luxury saloon, under the concept of “Courage Changes Everything”.

In this transformation, Porsche has systematically improved the Panamera concept — with a four-door car that has been redeveloped and redesigned down to the last  detail.

The New “Porsche Panamera” offers the best layout variability of any model in the luxury class, making it the most practical for everyday use.

The supercar consists of Turbo model and 4S model, inspired by 911 design language with a much more dynamic flyline. The exterior character of the Panamera has also

been sharpened with the dawn of the second generation. The Panamera Turbo has the most powerful petrol

engine of the model series. Its 4.0 litre biturbo V8 devel-ops 404 kW/550 hp (at 5,750 rpm) and a maximum torque of 770 Nm (between 1,960 and 4,500 rpm). It has 30 hp more power than the previous model, and its maximum torque has been increased by 70 Nm. The eight-cylinder engine accelerates the Panamera Turbo to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds; with the Sport Chrono Package the sprint time is just 3.6 seconds. The Porsche can reach a top speed of 306 km/h. These extraordinary performance figures contrast with lower combined fuel consumption figures which, at 9.4 – 9.3 l/100 km, are up to 1.1 l/100 km less than that of the previous model (New European Driving Cycle or NEDC). These figures equate to CO2 emissions of 214 – 212 g/km.

Top Ten Things to See and Do at the Thailand Yacht ShowThe forthcoming edition of the Thailand Yacht Show is gearing up to take place at Ao Po Grand Marina from 15-18 December. Here’s a Top Ten list of some of the Show’s highlights

Thai Super Luxury Leather GoodsMettique — super premium and

luxury Thai leather goods brand — is an art of finesse born out of

owner-designer  Met Hengtrakul’s love and passion for fashion and leather.

Met is no stranger to the leather indus-try. His childhood revolved around the family business of producing and distrib-uting leather goods to leading global and local brands.

Soon Met was dreaming of creating his own leather brand tht retains the luxury of 20-year finesse and priceless expertise.

At Mettique, finest quality is the key. Met-tique pays careful attention to every produc-tion step. Mettique is thorough with material selection. Only authentic, high quality leather is selected, studied and examined.

Mettique also imports crocodile and alligator leather ranked as high class as lead-ing luxury brands Hermes, Louis Vuitton, Moynat, Berluti, Loewe and  LVMH Group.

Mettique’s cowhide leather is vegetable tanned — resulting in the natural charm of real-grained leather. Unlike other brands’ low-cost choice of embossed leather, Met-tique leather is highly flexible.

Every Mettique masterpiece is made with high craftsmanship. Leather is applied to every part of the work: inside structure, lining and even spare parts — all to create more beautiful work with high resistance.

Mettique does not use synthetic cloths, paper or plastic as the lifecycle of these mate-rials is much shorter than leather.

All Mettique creations are born of over 20 years of expert craftsmanship.

Mettique presents a wide range of leather goods including clutches, briefcases, hand-bags, purses, card holders, iPhone cases, and computer cases. Customisation and person-alisation services arealso available.

Inspired by its rich heritage, the Maison is unveiling a brand-new jewelry collection with a rounded, graphic design: Bouton d’or™. Diamonds, gold, mother-of-pearl

and hard stones come together in bold creations, born out of a unique expertise. From the choice of materials through to the intricately assembled motifs, each piece reflects all the virtuosity of Van Cleef & Arpels.

Plays of lines and colorsWith joyful harmony, the Bouton d’or collection gives pride of place to the curved lines of a jewelry motif called ‘‘Paillette’’, created by the Maison in the late 1930s. Reinter-preted today, it lends itself to mul-tiple plays of associations, volume and colors, producing a style that is both graphic and feminine. Adorned with a diamond at their centers, these concave or convex elements are repeated to compose a necklace that hugs the neckline, a subtly asym-metric bracelet, earrings that seem to dance with each movement of the body, a three-dimensional ring and a generous pendant.

A timeless aestheticA blend of tradition and modernity, the Bouton d’or collec-tion’s style has its origins in the Paillette motif, which first appeared in the Maison’s archives in 1939. During the 1940s, this precious pastille of yellow gold was revealed in various interpretations. Gathered together into a rounded ring or the strands of an opulent double necklace, the motifs also formed sparkling bouquets.

Within the hectic and bustle of city life, in Bangkok, there is an idyllic and tranquil spot, to regain a sense

of calm and peace, at the Okura Prestige Hotel. To beat the year-end slump in energy levels, a visit to The Okura Spa, up on the 25th floor of the hotel, is a very therapeutic experience. “We give wings to your worries and encourage them to fly away,” notes Spa Operations Manager Ms. Duangkamol Thuaitthongkham.

Booking in advance is rec-ommended, as this remains a popular luxury spa, par-ticularly with hotel guests, and there are only five treatment rooms, including a couple’s suite with a Jacuzzi tub. Allow yourself plenty of time before your treat-ment, to take advantage of the opportunity to use the infinity pool and sauna facilities, just adjacent to the spa. Then, relax in the spa lounge, while you are served a chilled butterfly pea infusion, which is nourishing for the skin and hair, and a cold refresh-ing towel.

Settled in to this haven of calm, you change from your outdoor shoes into cosy

Nikki Busuttil spa slippers, and peruse the spa treatment menu. As well as an extensive offering on a regular basis, the spa receptionist advises you of the special packages of the season, during your pre-treatment consultation. At the moment, The Okura Spa is entic-ing guests to select their ‘Time to Renew & Recover’ package, which is a unique treat, priced at 5,500 Baht++ (add on 10% service charge and 7% government tax).

Aptly named, Time to Renew & Recover is a blissful two hours long, and incorpo-rates the Tropical Wood Collection spa

products from the well-loved brand Harnn (www.harnn.com). With quality skincare, beauty and home products, Harnn is renowned for their luxurious scents, with essen-

tial oils, providing a virtual escape through the senses. The Okura Spa has chosen the Sugar & Coffee Refiner Body Scrub and the Neroli & Sandalwood Bath & Massage Oil from this range, to use in this treatment, available from now until 31st Decem-ber 2016.

Your Time to Renew & Recover package allows you just that. Switch off your mind, still your thoughts and just breathe. The two-hour time slot is filled with thirty min-utes of body scrub and then a full hour and a half of body massage. There is no need

to shower first, as the post-scrub rinse will take care of that, meaning you just need to slip into a robe, and take a seat for the relaxing lavender salt foot scrub, carried out before every treatment. Here, your spa therapist reassuringly reconfirms your pref-erences, for treatment selection, massage pressure and the areas you would like to focus on. She thoughtfully makes sure of your satisfaction with the ambience and room temperature.

As you take to your massage table, face down, with their non-invasive music play-ing gently in the background, the lighting is low and comforting. The Harnn sugar and coffee scrub is applied with a little water and long yet vigorous strokes, to ensure that all dead skin cells are removed and the blood circulation is stimulated. The scrub contains certified organic olive oil and shea butter, with a pleasant subtle aroma of san-dalwood and enriched with essential oils and antioxidants. This makes for the ideal skin preparation for the ensuing massage.

After a thorough shower to wash away all of the scrub particles, the skin already feels smooth and renewed, as well as

ready to receive the benefits of the orange blossom (neroli) and sandalwood scented massage oil. Back on the massage bed, the therapist ensures you are warm and toasty, before letting her trained hands seek out your knots and muscular aches. Alleviat-ing strokes ease away worries and cares, to leave you relaxed and stress-free, as the oil simultaneously combats lacklustre skin, typical of the season.

For each recipient of this particular spa package, the spa therapist opens a new set of scrub and massage oil, but uses only about half. After the treatment and in order to permit the guest to continue enjoying the nourishing and moisturizing effects of these products, guests are given the remainder to take home, in the original packaging. “The orange scent of neroli is very refreshing, while sandalwood was apparently used in ancient Egypt to help embalm the mum-mies, so we hope that this treatment will help preserve the youthful appearance of our guests’ skin,” comments K. Duangka-mol. “We are delighted that our guests can use these spa products at home too.”

Another Okura favourite that is well worth considering is their signature treat-ment, Ta-Ke Relief (4,500Baht++). This is a ninety-minute Japanese bamboo massage, utilizing the principles of acupuncture and heated bamboo rods, in varying sizes, to coax out muscle tension and fatigue. Ta-Ke promotes healthy blood circulation and induces well-being, and is most suited to those who enjoy deep tissue and sports massage, or firm pressure.

As this might well become a favourite spa spot for unique and intriguing spa treat-ments, The Okura Spa offers membership, available for all residents of Thailand. Mem-bership includes unlimited use of their can-tilevered, infinity-style pool and 24-hour fitness centre with a view. For further details on the membership programmes on offer, enquiries can be directed to 02 687 9090, while full hotel and spa information can be found at www.okurabangkok.com.

Open from 10.00am to 10.00pm daily, The Okura Spa is accessible from the BTS Skytrain station Ploenchit. There is a direct sky-bridge link into the Park Ventures Eco-plex building, where the hotel is located. Hotel parking and valet services can fur-thermore be reached via their entrance on Wireless Road.

Appointments can be reserved in advance by calling 02 687 9000 or by emailing [email protected].

So Sofitel Bangkok Bûche De noël 2016 captures the magic of the festive

once upon a wonderland, a French fairytale storybook told a story of a City of Angels,

and in this most wonderful time of year, SO Sofitel Bangkok reinterprets this magical tale through the annual Bûche de Noël yule log Christmas tradition.

“The festive season is about bring-ing people together over enchanting moments, and Sofitel’s Art De Noël helps to recreate this magic in our hotel during holiday season,” said Mr. Yves Mudry, General Manager of SO Sofitel Bangkok.

The architecture of SO Sofitel Bangkok draws references from a treasured hardback book, a design

feature perfectly suited to this year’s “Once Upon a Time” concept for the 2016 festive season. Similarly, guests visiting SO Sofitel Bangkok are invited on a journey into the pages of a French fairytale book, with stories spun with elements of traditional Thai culture.

Sitting atop a page of the open book is perhaps the most striking feature of SO Sofitel Bangkok’s Bûche de Noël 2016 – the head of Ravana, rising from the pages of the story. Also known as Thotsakan from the Ramayana epic, the green protector giant also stands guard at Wat Arun, the Temple of Dawn, in Bangkok. Hence, the deity is used to symbolize a welcome to SO Sofitel Bangkok.

Adding drama to the pastry mas-terpiece are traditional Thai motifs, bringing the fairytale to life. Beneath the artistry, the magic of both worlds are told through ingredients, with a decadent French sponge chocolate cake base complemented with an indulgent coconut & kaffir lime cream.

Dating back to the 6th century, the tradition of yule logs began with the burning of freshly-cut wood when families would come together for a festive gathering over the Christmas holiday. Centuries later, Parisian bakers revived this custom in the form of log cakes, a tradition Sofitel has carried into the 21st century.

Staged every year, a Sofitel Bûche

de Noël log cake design contest offers pastry chefs stationed in Sofitel hotels around the world the chance to unleash their creative flair and out-do each other in the name of friendly competition.

sO sOFitEl BANGkOk’s BÛCHE DE NOËl 2016 will be available at Chocolab from 25th November 2016 until 1st January 2017. Guests can also have a delicious ‘happily ever after’ of their very own for tHB3,900 net with 48 hours advanced notice. to order, please contact 02 624 0000 or Email: [email protected].

8 I HOLIDAY TIME Bangkok Post I Friday, december 2, 2016

Mexicano, Bangkok’s old-est-established upscale Mexican restaurant and bar, has launched “Sabado Latin Party”, a new option

for the many salsa dance fans of all nation-alities who love to flock together to strut their stuff at various accommodating venues around li’l old Bangkok.

Sabado Latin Party takes over Mexicano (1/F The Rembrandt Hotel, Sukhumvit Soi 18) every Saturday evening from 9.00pm-2.00am (100 baht drinks after 10.00pm) while the restaurant is open from 5.00pm. Free salsa dance training is available from 8pm-9pm and profes-sional Latin dance teacher Sultan Jamal is on-hand to lead the hip-huggin’ moves across the Tango floor. Plus besides Mex-icano’s action-packed dance floor, there’s another adjacent dance floor where salsa fans practice their steps and sways in a more studied way.

The fabulous fiesta of fun-loving guys and gals includes Latin dancing, specially priced drinks and, of course, thanks to Master Chef Carlos Bravo, some of the best and most authentic Mexican food in town.

The so-called “eatertainment” party night features Chef Carlos’s signature “spicy, wicked and ‘give me more!’” flavours.

International latino guest DJs spin the discs between sessions from the live Latino band which injects another level of sexy energy into the proceedings.

Meanwhile, Mexicano’s amazing stock of 60 different tequilas, local beers, inter-national craft beers and wines keeps whis-tles wet despite the sensual exertions.

Mexicano first opened its doors as Senor Pico back in 1993. Chiming rhyth-mically with the salsa dance craze, it quickly secured a strong following.

The restaurant relaunched last year with mostly the same Chihuahuacan-tina-style décor but a different culinary philosophy, as “Mexicano”, a Spanish word meaning, well, Mexican, but in the sense of being the real deal.

Culinary-wise, Mexicano is particularly mindful of the fact that Mexican was the

first cuisine to attain UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity status). In other words, it believes in conserv-ing the original ingredients and flavours that made the cuisine so addictive in the first place.

Start with a poignant Passionfruit Margarita — lemon, passionfruit and 1 oz of tequila in a sombrero phat, salt-rimmed glass.

Then savour uber-juicy Ceviche De Atun Y Pescado — orange and lemon-mar-inated tuna and sea bass mixed with, mango, avocado, coriander, onion and jalapenos, served on a bed of crushed ice under a frisson of rosarie, spinach and corn chips on the side for scooping. A Corona Michelada (beer, tomato, chilli, Maggi and seasoning) makes a perfect complement.

Stack up some delicious quesadillas — a giant grilled flour tortilla nestling home-made chorizo sausage with melted moz-zarella and cheddar cheese in its folds, served with pico de gallo fresh tomato sauce and sour cream.

Tacos Bajas: Sonora soft flour tortil-las burst with crispy seabass re-fried in tempura batter, juxtaposed with a citrusy salad of cauliflower, carrot, chipotle may-onnaise, avocado. The crispy outside fluffy inside meaty fish is superb.

For an authentica Mexican grill experi-ence, go for Espedatas: a giant skewer of char-grilled Australian ribeye, chicken and prawn rubbed with garlic, salt, bay leaf. Served with Mexican rice, refried pinto beans with cheese on top, green (chilli) and red (tomato) salsas and fine grain tortillas, this is pure succulence.

Homemade ice creams sometimes include tuna (not the fish!) etc. Or for a piece de resistance try the homemade coconut Flan (like crème caramel) with roasted pineapple, chocolate and pista-chio ice cream.

El Brunch on Saturday lunch times (Bt699/350++)  is another must.
