Unique Gifts & Gift Baskets

Our kitchens so often set the tone for the holiday season. Having ingredients and tools you love to work with and prepared foods you’re excited to put on the table can make entertaining this time of year so much more fun.

But nobody wants to spend this festive season driving from store to store for groceries when you’re already busy.

Shop for top-quality ingredients,

prepared foods and food gifts in Downtown Fredericksburg, and you can stock your kitchen at the same time you gather gifts for under the tree.

For an impressive holiday dinner party, pick up a roast, steaks, chicken or fish from Olde Towne Butcher. You can call ahead to place a special order. This shop also sells a wide variety of local products, from coffee to honey to chocolate and

more. You’ll also find a selection of craft beer and wine.

If you’re feeding a crowd with special dietary needs—or you just care about great food—check out Kickshaws Downtown Market.

This little market is packed with organic produce, butter, eggs, dairy products and many gluten-free and vegan options you won’t find anywhere else. They carry a nice selection of prepared foods, and can put together gift baskets with treats for special diets, natural beauty products or even a local goods gift pack.

Kickshaws is big on community, so stop by to sign up for one of their cooking classes, or attend one of their monthly whole-foods pot lucks. The potluck on the first weekend of December will have a holiday theme.

To really get into the spirit of holiday hospitality, consider attending one of two wine tastings at Charlie & Grace European Market Café at 1002 Sophia St.

At their Nov. 14 wine tasting, from 2-4 p.m., you can sign up for

a traditional Swedish Gingerbread class the restaurant will host on Dec. 6.

At the Dec. 5 wine tasting from 2-4 p.m., you can learn about the gourmet holiday platters Charlie & Grace can put together to help make your holiday parties really shine.

Holiday cooking is also a great opportunity to overhaul the pantry staples that help you turn out beautiful meals.

Something as simple as using great olive oils and vinegars can do wonders for your cooking. Stop into Taste Oil Vinegar Spice, where staff can help you select exactly the right varieties from their large collection to complement

Stock your holiday kitchen downtown

Stock your pantry with some quick, but healthy, breakfast essentials so your family can get out the door fueled and ready for shopping from Kickshaws Downtown Market.

Sweet treats are a must-have at any holiday

event, and downtown has a great selection.

Take a moment this holiday season and experience Charlie & Grace European Market Café.

Make the holidays magic againShop Downtown Fredericksburg

When you’re making your list and checking it twice, here’s a tip to help make sure that gathering holiday gifts for your loved ones is a joyful part of your holiday season:

Source your gifts from Downtown Fredericksburg.

Here, you’ll find a community of independent shops, restaurants, galleries and other businesses selling unique gifts, from the locally made to popular national brands you won’t find anywhere else in this area.

Holiday shopping in Downtown Fredericksburg feels nothing like a hectic day at the mall. Stroll along streets lined with Federal-style buildings that are centuries old, in this business district whose role as a place of commerce goes back to before George Washington’s boyhood Christmases.

Kick off the season with an event sure to put you in a holiday mood. The annual

Children’s Tree Lighting Nov. 28 brings families from around the region together to see Fredericksburg’s Christmas tree in Hurkamp Park come to life, and to welcome Santa to the area for the season. This is a great night to bring your family downtown, enjoy a meal together and prepare for the holidays ahead.

Get a taste of the era when big-city department store windows loomed like magical scenes in the minds of children at Whittingham, where owner Bob Whittingham spends all year planning his annual holiday window and unveils it on Thanksgiving weekend.

Climb aboard a horse-drawn carriage and enjoy holiday goodies and music on one of Olde Towne Carriages’ Jingle Bell Christmas Rides, 50-minute tours that will give you a chance to enjoy holiday decorations all over downtown

Downtown is an ideal place to catch up with Santa Claus himself. Whether over breakfast at Eileen’s Bakery and Café or having portraits made in Santa’s workshop at Kitt Creative, opportunities to create and capture priceless

1. Nobody needs to store large serving platters that only come out for one holiday a year. Make entertaining fun with Nora Fleming serving ware, available at Heather Boutique. These clean white pieces—from platters to soap dispensers to breadboards and more—each have a spot to affix a seasonal “mini.” Swap out these cute and colorful minis to mark the season at hand, and you’re ready for an event with style.

2.) For a gift with a positive message, peruse the large selection of Alex and Ani bracelets at Crown Jewelers. These bracelets, all made of recycled metals and recycled glass, come with cards that explain the significance of the symbols on their charms. Stack three or more for a custom look that will get noticed.

3.) Even if it’s not a white Christmas, kids of all ages will get a kick out of watching the Original Melting Snowman, available at Whittingham. Put him together and watch him melt again and again. The best part? No batteries required.

4.} For the fun-loving girls on your gift list, Simply Southern’s line of bright, preppy T-shirts is a trend that is sweeping the South right now. Available at both Bash Boutique and Lydia’s Monogrammed Gifts and Stationery, these T-shirts add style to casual outfits. Many styles have front pockets that can be monogrammed for a personalized look.

5.) Whether you’re giving this to a host or hostess at a party or shipping it to family far away, an Edwards Boneless Petite Ham from the Made in Virginia Store is always a welcome gift, with its salted, country-style flavor. Pack in more Virginia goodies with a Virginia Sampler gift basket, which includes ham, as well as Key lime pound cake, black raspberry preserves, Alpenglow Sparkling Cider, peanuts and peanut brittle.

6.) We all know how guys love their gadgets. For the outdoorsman in your life, head to River Rock Outfitters for the Buckshot Pro, a compact, lightweight device that serves as a wireless Bluetooth speaker, flashlight, strobe light, camp light and powerbank, all in one. Campers, paddlers, climbers and more will consider this a must-have device that delivers both safety and entertainment in one package.

For a gift that is truly one-of-a-kind, look to Downtown Fredericksburg’s rich community of artists.

From sculpture to paintings to pottery, photography, textiles and more, seeing Fredericksburg through the eyes of these creative individuals is a gift in itself.

One simple way to start building a collection of local keepsakes is to purchase the annual Fredericksburg commemorative holiday ornament. These limited-edition ornaments are available at the Fredericksburg Visitor Center

and Heather Boutique while supplies last. They sell for $28.50.

Each ornament is painstakingly crafted by artist Christine Lush-Rodriguez, a co-founder of the Artful Dimensions gallery on Charles Street, which features sculpture and other three-dimensional artwork.

The ceramic lamp models of downtown buildings created by Scarlett Pons of PONSHOP Studio on Caroline Street are a very special gift for someone with strong ties to Fredericksburg.

This year, Pons plans to offer limited runs of her lamp depicting St. George’s Episcopal Church, first released in 2013, and the historic Town Hall, first

Steampunk fan? The downtown Fredericksburg art scene is probably more diverse that you realize. Cross everyone off your list with something special and unique they’ll cherish forever.

Are your love ones near or far? Local artist Scarlett Pons’ ceramic lamp models of downtown Fredericksburg are sure to remind them of you and the city, while also making a nice addition to any holiday mantel decorations.

Downtown Fredericksburg has worked a little holiday magic to make your shopping easier this holiday season. From Nov. 14 through New Year’s Eve, all of the 2-hour parking places along Downtown’s streets will become 4-hour spaces. Speaking of extra shopping time, on the 5 Fridays leading up to Christmas Day, the Fredericksburg VA Main Street Inc. is encouraging downtown businesses to stay open until at least 8 p.m. These shops will display

yellow “Open Late” flags to announce they’re welcoming evening shoppers.

Give the gift of downtown shopping! Can’t decide what to get those hard-to-shop-for folks on your list? Know someone who would like nothing more than to spend a day perusing Downtown’s shops, galleries and restaurants? Give them the Experience Fredericksburg Gift Card. This card is adorned with the work of local artists and is valid at more than 80 fine downtown merchants. Purchase cards online at fredericksburgmainstreet.org to customize your card with a personal message, choose from one of five designs and select any value from $10 to $500. Cards are also available for sale in denominations of $25, $50 and $100 at the Fredericksburg Visitor Center at 706 Caroline St., LibertyTown Arts Workshop at 720 Liberty St. or at the Fredericksburg VA Main Street Inc.’s office at 904 Princess Anne St.

Long after all the wrapping paper is cleaned up and the new toys and clothes are put away, the gift of an experience creates long-lasting memories. Here are several ideas for Downtown Fredericksburg gifts that won’t fit in a box:• The Timeless Ticket – No gift can compare

to the guarantee of time spent together as a family. The Timeless Ticket, available in the Fredericksburg Visitor Center, offers reduced one-time admission to the most popular attractions in the Fredericksburg region, including Kenmore, Mary Washington House, Ferry Farm and much more. You’ll receive one free student ticket (for ages 6 to 18) with every $32 adult ticket you purchase. Additional student tickets are $10 each, and Children 5 and under are free. The best part—this ticket never expires. Keep it on-hand for when you have out-of-town guests or others you want to spend a day with. Get to know your own backyard a little better.

• A custom-made suit from Aspetto – Your husband, father, son or boyfriend will feel like a million bucks when you book an appointment for him to be measured for his custom-tailored suit from Aspetto, on Caroline Street. A suit

Sometimes the best gifts come on a plate. The American fare, with French influence, at Cork and Table is one of many tasty restaurants in downtown Fredericksburg that offer gift certificates.

At Aspetto a tailored suit will make the men in your life look dashing all year long. For those with James Bond tendencies, don’t worry, you can even get it bullet proof.

SoMe SAntA ClAuS FACtS• Santa Claus is also known as St. Nickolas,

Father Christmas, Grandfather Frost and Kris Kringle.

• Santa Claus was born in 270 AD. That means he is over 1,000 years old. It’s the magic of Christmas that keeps him alive and well.

• So how does Santa deliver all those presents in one night? Santa actually has almost two days to deliver the presents. How? While in one part of the world it is day, in another part of the world it is night. For example when it is 12:30PM (daytime) in New York it is 1:30AM (nighttime) in China. Santa will travel through 3 different time zones on Christmas Eve. This gives him more time to deliver presents.

• Santa will visit over 90 million homes on Christmas Eve. So to deliver all the presents how fast does his sleigh have to go?

• Santa’s sleigh travels at the speed of light. That is about 186,282.4 miles per second or 671 million miles per hour!

• Santa has 8 reindeer Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner and Blitzen.

• So what does Santa do when Christmas is over? First he takes a short vacation with Mrs. Claus at the North Pole then he gets right back to work. Preparing his good boys and girls list and his naughty girls and boys list. He also starts getting toys ready for next Christmas. So remember to always be good because you never know when Santa’s watching.

memories with the Old St. Nick abound here.

Downtown Fredericksburg at the holidays is a place to get back to a simpler way of shopping, when downtowns dominated and you didn’t have to drive for hours to buy for everyone on your list.

Celebrate that return to a simpler time over a hand-dipped milkshake or flavored soda at Goolrick’s Modern Pharmacy, the nation’s longest continuously running soda fountain.

Downtown is also a magical place for holiday romance.

A proposal amid buildings decked out in holiday lights—especially after an elegant dinner at La Petite Auberge, Ristorante Renato, Bistro Bethem, The Bavarian Chef or Poppy Hill Tuscan Kitchen—is unforgettable.

So is jewelry. Ulman’s Jewelry, Gemstone Creations, Fredericksburg Jewler, Crown Jewelers and the Jewel Box have

all helped bring sparkle to many a Fredericksburg couple’s holiday.

Downtown is also a great place to gather with friends for drinks and a bite to eat. Visit the newly opened Sedona Taphouse or newly renovated Capital Ale House to find some of the biggest selections of craft beers in the area.

Make a choice to celebrate the simple things this holiday, and make your life simpler in the process.

Downtown Fredericksburg is here to help make sure the season is all magic, no fuss.

There is nothing quiet as romantic nor nostalgic as a carriage ride through downtown Fredericksburg, and during the peak of the holiday season you may find Santa or the Grinch has joined your trip!

Slip in to Ulman’s Jewelry Store to see rings like this one by Gabriel & Co. because jewelry is always a great gift for the holiday season.

Sweet treats are a must-have at any holiday event, and downtown has a great selection.

released in 2014. She is also working on

a brand-new downtown lamp that will be available in time for the holidays.

There is a locally crafted gift for every category of recipient on your list. Walk into Sophia Street Studios and you’ll find the whimsical mix of black-and-white patterns and swirling colors that has become the signature design of potter Trista Chapman.

Chapman has the ability to re-imagine everything from teapots to deviled-egg dishes in a way that makes them fun and beautiful gifts to give.

Sharing space in the shop with her work are a number of other items at all kinds of price points,

from jewelry, to animal-shaped wall clocks, to the works of celebrated local potter Neal Reed, and much more. This kind of mixture of one-of-a-kind merchandise can be found at many of Fredericksburg’s galleries.

And don’t forget gifts related to the performing arts. Picker’s Supply on Caroline Street is a local music gathering spot, and a great place to look for an instrument or music lessons for children or adults on your list.

An excellent way to start getting to know whose work you like is to attend First Fridays in downtown Fredericksburg. On the first Friday evening of every month, galleries open their doors with new exhibits, serving

wine and hors d’oeuvres and bringing in crowds. Restaurants, shops and other businesses showcase exhibits of their own.

You’ll want to visit Liberty Town Arts Workshop, Art First, Brushstrokes, the Fredericksburg Center for the Creative Arts, ArtMart, Studio A & Gallery and more.

If you find a particular artist you like, remember that many artists do commission work, which could be anything from a portrait of your children, to a watercolor of a favorite family gathering spot to a mural on a wall in your home.

These are gifts guaranteed not to show up under anybody else’s Christmas tree.

Walk up the stairs of the hidden gem, Water Street Studio, on Sophia Street to find beautiful ornaments like those seen here, as well as a multitude of other treasures.

Art, from page 8

with the perfect fit, made for his exact measurements, will last for years. Plus, Aspetto saves your individual “blueprint” of measurements, to make future orders easier.

• Fun fitness classes – Make a gift basket filled with cards from all of downtown’s fitness boutiques, including Dragonfly Yoga, PITAIYO and FLY Fitness Inspiration. Add in personal training or group classes at Bodyworks Downtown Athletic Club. Throw in a T-shirt or water bottle from Dragonfly

or some cute new leggings from PITAIYO to complete the package. Downtown is becoming a regional fitness destination, and helping someone find a new favorite fitness regimen can be a gift that keeps on giving.

• Spa Day – Pair a gift card for a massage at Skin+Touch Therapy with one for a manicure, pedicure or other treatment at Studio D’Esthetique. Wrap it all up with a holiday-scented bath bomb from Ladyburg, and she’ll feel like she’s getting the movie-star treatment.

• Artistic Inspiration – For the creative on your list, consider helping them find a new favorite hobby or artistic passion. Liberty Town Arts Workshop offers a wide variety of classes in drawing, painting, pottery and more. PONSHOP Studio offers innovative classes for children and adults in everything from ceramics to street art, mixed media, recycled arts and

skateboard graphics. Groups and individuals can paint canvases or ceramic dishes, ornaments and more at Pots & Palettes on Sophia Street. Many of the individual artists you discover downtown also teach private lessons.

• Downtown Shopping Date – Forget the stress of buying for your spouse, trying to guess how much to spend or whether this is the year to “go big.” Block off your calendar for a Saturday, book a sitter if you need one and make your gift a fun day of shopping together downtown. Start with breakfast

over Sugar Shack doughnuts or heartier fare at Mercantile. Visit Emporio, Du Jardin, The House of Milk and Honey or art galleries and talk about what would look good in your home. Pop in to Jabberwocky and Rocking Horse Gallery to have fun shopping for your kids or grandkids together. Make time to reconnect over your favorite brew at Capital Ale House or Deutschland Downtown, or have a meal with custom wine pairings at Cork & Table and you’ve given each other a gift that will surely add cheer to your holiday.

Gift, from page 9

After a long day of holiday shopping experience a relaxing meal, German-style, at Deutschland Downtown.

After the stress of the holidays why not try an Ashiatsu,or barefoot massage, from Skin+Touch Therapy. Also a great gift, this technique softens chronic tension and tight muscles. Special bars attached to the ceiling above the therapist’s head provide support, balance and safe delivery of massage to clients.

Block off your calendar for a Saturday, book a sitter if you need one and make your gift a fun day of shopping together downtown.
