    OFFICER

We have almost reached the end of what has been a remarkably challenging year. Through it all, I think we have witnessed an amazing amount of resilience and an eagerness to work together to get the best outcomes for our students. In short, I think we have seen a community working at its best. Teachers and indeed all staff pivoted quickly and ably to present curriculum on line while parents showed an amazing ability to keep their children engaged and feeling positive about their learning. • programs and general ‘service’ work has been delivered by these leaders. The school captains are now readying themselves for the year 6 Graduation. Over the year these captains and I have met to ensure regularly so that I could seek their feedback and ideas about the happenings at Holland Park. I have found that our student leaders are eager to help, to ‘give back’ and to see what may be needed to support others. Thank-you leaders and well done! Prep Orientation On Friday 20 November, we had our prep orientation class visits. It was most exciting to see over 100 of our new students and the parents for the 2021 school year. This year we trialed having the ‘new’ students exclusively in the prep classrooms while the current preps were involved in other learning experiences. This was a great opportunity for next year’s preps to experience a prep classroom and the first steps to transition from ‘kindy’ to ‘big’ school. Many thanks to our fabulous prep teachers and aides, Mrs Karen Oliver (our prep enrolment officer), Mr Mark Lyell (our P and C President) and the other staff who supported this session. It was a huge success. Chess Last Friday we held our annual HPSS Chess Tournament. The event was organised by Gardiner Chess and Chess administrator, Mrs Schilg. I attended this competition on the day. It was great to see so many students (over 50) enjoying the challenge of such a great game or is it sport? There were plenty of younger players, which means promising things for years to come. For our chess enthusiasts, it was a blissful day of chess talk, competition, strategy and occasional ribbons and medallions. Thanks sincerely to Mrs Schilg and Mrs Briant our teacher aide chess supporter. Look out for the full report and photos in this newsletter. Leigh Harrod Deputy Principal

Curriculum – Mathematics Daily Maths Routines

Dear Parents, As you know, Daily Maths Routines (DMR) are an embedded feature of our daily instruction across the school. At Holland Park teachers deliver both Rapid Recalls and Number Talks. Please see below ‘refresher’ around Number Talks.! What are number talks? Number talks are a daily routine to develop a deeper conceptual understanding and a comfortability with numbers, operations and mathematics. They can be used to introduce math concepts, properties about numbers, explore math connections and relationships or to review, practise and reinforce concepts. What are the benefits: Number talks help students develop computational fluency (mental maths) and flexible thinking about numbers and operations. They also provide students with opportunities to: clarify and communicate their own

thinking consider and try other strategies investigate and apply math connections

and relationships build a variety of strategies to use to

solve a question make decisions to choose efficient

strategies learn from their mistakes develop a sense of math community in

    the classroom

School News Student Leaders As the year draws to a close, I would like to acknowledge our ‘fabulous’ inducted school leaders. It has been an ‘odd’ year for all of us, but our student leaders have continued to be an impressive ‘light’ at our school. Apart from fulfilling their roles admirably in both supporting our staff in the classroom, in the playground and at special events at our school, many have shown initiative by developing new ideas and initiatives that will help making the school a better place. Several ‘volunteer’ programs such as peer mediators, classroom lunch sport competitions, music events, environmental

Year 5 Drama with Cavendish Road State High

This term in year five, as a part of their drama unit, the Year 5 students collaborated with year eleven Cavendish Road State High School drama students and their teacher, Mrs Toni Ryan, to develop their drama skills. Every Wednesday for the first six weeks of the term, the students developed scripts and rehearsed small role-plays and free frames and reflected on the elements of drama. Here are some thoughts about the experience from students in 5SG I liked how Hannah, our year 11 student teacher tried her best to help us and teach us how to do things. Charlotte I liked how our leader, Alice helped us write our script. We learnt a lot from her. Abby I learnt new things about drama. We got to show what we worked on to an audience. The stimulus was images from our excursion to Pullenvale. Olivia The Cav Road teacher, Mrs Ryan knew a lot about drama like movement, space and character and she could tell us what to work on. Zoe H We performed our news reports, a poem, freeze frames and play script. Mia I learnt how to speak in front of a lot of people. Elliot I learnt about drama elements like side stage, back stage, centre stage and using voice more strongly. Charlie What a wonderful experience! Debra Ybarlucea Acting Head of Curriculum

Swim Carnival What a sensational day! The Year 4,5 and 6 carnival certainly demonstrated true house spirit. It was so pleasing to see such enthusiasm and participation from our students. With the many restrictions and change of routines that we have experienced this year, it was wonderful to see our House Captains take charge and get their house members excited. I think that a year’s worth of cheering was let go at this event. The 25m sprint challenge was a great way of getting more students participating and gaining points for their house. I would like to congratulate Wilson 1st place followed very closely by Lavarack and Bowen. This event would not run smoothly without our very capable officials, a big thankyou to our teachers for your support throughout the day. Cambodia Club Thank you to our community members who participated in our Containers Mega Week. We are certainly creating change and we look forward to continuing to reduce our drink containers from going to landfill. Gymnastics Club Good luck to all of our teams that will be heading to Caloundra to compete at the Gymnastic Queensland Extravaganza. Teams will be competing against other schools and gymnastic clubs in the Gymfest event. Each Tuesday and Thursday lunch breaks our Gymnastic Club develop the necessary skills required to perform their routines, they have worked extremely hard to create their routines. I would also like to acknowledge Mrs Goldberg for her assistance to our lunchtime club. This will be our third year competing at this event and I am sure that our teams will perform some wonderful routines. Good luck to Alexis K, Caitlin M, Stella LH, Emma B, Sasha R, Stella W, Olivia H, Rose C, Sophie J, Caleb T, Charlotte K, Olivia M, Piper L, Abby T, Sofia VJ, Claudia O, Charlotte L, Neri S, Piper T, Ava W, Molly H, Abigael P, Avie T, Grace L, Chloe B, Emily D, Ella S and Sophie O. 2021 District swimming Students that would like to submit times for 2021 District swimming can do so on the nomination that is included with the newsletter. Congratulations to your parents who have cared for you before you arrived at this school, who have supported you while you have been here and who will continue to love you long after you leave this place. Yet this place will always be part of you, not the bricks and mortar, but the ideas you have learned, the experiences you have shared, the friendships you have made, and the memories you treasure of those who have been a force for good along the way.
