To the Sophia Mundi Community.

Dear School Community,

Welcome back to Term 4. I trust that everyone has had a restful break and that you are now all ready for the final stretch of the year. It is wonderful to welcome the glorious days of spring and the uplifting forces that they bring.

I would like to start by saying “Thank you”, to the Board for entrusting me with the position of Principal of Sophia Mundi Steiner School. I am very grateful to them for opportunity and I look forward to a fruitful and engaging relationship in the governance of the school.

It is a wonderful opportunity for me, joining such a dynamic and enthusiastic school community to share my experience and play a role in the leadership of Sophia Mundi.

I am very excited at the future prospects of the school and feel a real sense of humility in being asked to join the journey and help guide the school into its’ promising future

A very special ‘thank you’ must go to Fiona for holding the reins in such a professional and protective way over the last term. A true testament of her dedication to the wellbeing of Sophia Mundi.

Steiner Education is a creative and potent impulse in the lives of our children and we as educators and leaders need to ensure that this vitality and enlivenment remain relevant to the demands of the modern child.

I hope there is time in the future for you to come into my office and chat about the children, their educational journey and our roles as co educators. The most important aspect of any school is the learning outcomes and experiences for the students and this must remain our primary focus, while we keep in perspective all the other issues which may arise.

To give you a small insight to my experiences and history, I have outlined a few of the things that I have done.

I was born in Bega, NSW to German immigrant parents. My father was one of the people who brought Bio Dynamic Farming to Australia in the early 50’s, so I was fortunate to grow up on a BD farm in Bemboka, in the Bega Valley.

After travelling Europe in the early 70’s I began my Steiner Teacher Training at Lorien Novalis School in Sydney. After completing my Training and Primary

teaching cycle at Lorien, I helped establish Aurora Meander Steiner School on the outskirts of Sydney.

In 1992, I accepted the position of Class One Teacher at the Orange County Waldorf School in California and after four years in the US, I returned to Lorien Novalis to take guardianship of a Year Eight Class and to work in the High School, teaching Biology, Geography, Philosophy and anything else that needed to be taught. During these years at Lorien I also took the position of Administrator and roles such as Board Chairman, Financial Management Group and Project Manager for the $4 Million High School Building Project.

In June of 2012, I left Lorien, to have a break and to build my new home in Sydney.

In late 2012, I accepted a position as Education Administrator/Principal at the Mt Barker Waldorf School in the Adelaide Hills, South Australia.

My move here to Melbourne, has now allowed me to reunite my family and eliminate the endless flights back and forth to Sydney, so I reiterate, thank you for offering me this position.

I look forward with enthusiasm to my work here at Sophia Mundi, particularly getting to know the students and how best we can help them unfold their individual destinies through the creative learning process, to working with the teachers and the parents in building a strong and secure home for the children to flourish, as well as to enjoy the Melbourne lifestyle and all it has to offer.

I will be making regular contributions to the newsletter covering many topics relevant to the youth of today, so I hope that you take the time to read them and give feedback if you feel inspired to do so.

My email is [email protected] and I am always available for comment, contributions and discussions.

Thank you for your continued support of our school.

Kindest regards,

Norman Sievers Principal

SHIATSU FOR CHILDREN (PEDIATRICS)

The Australian Shiatsu College invites you to participate in our special day of complimentary Shiatsu for Children (Pediatrics) aged 6-14years coming up at the college on Thursday 17th October 2013.

There are two session times available: 4.30pm-5.30pm and 5.45-6.45pm.

The treatments are given by final year students of our Diploma Program, near to graduation, under the direction of Jenny Dorrington (College teacher/Director).

These sessions have been highly popular in the past, with children taking to shiatsu like ducks to water, and enjoying the playful yet calming nature of shiatsu.

There are limited places, so please call or email to book a time and we look forward to seeing you with your children for this very special treatment offer. Parents or guardians are of course welcome to sit and watch or enjoy the coffee and tea in the kitchen and lounge area.
