We say a farewell to our magnificent Year 6 children who have been a joy to have at the top of our school. Not only have they worked hard to achieve, they have been fine ambassadors in the ways they have represented our school at sports, music and cultural events, helping visitors, encouraging and supporting younger children in their play and being superb, co-operative, dedicated and friendly members of our school. All 96 students have at various times made a good contribution to our school. They leave us this year to start their new journey into their secondary schools. We wish them well for their future. The Year 6 Farewell was a great night. The new venue at Brighton Lakes Golf Club was terrific and our Year 6 students did us proud. I am sure everyone really enjoyed the night which went very smoothly, thanks to the excellent organisation and preparation by our Year 6 staff. Congratulations Year 6 students on a wonderful year. PARLIAMENT CLOSING On Monday we had our Closing of Parliament Ceremony. We were delighted to welcome special guests: Mr Warren Finn, Director, Educational Leadership, Ms Melanie Gibbons, Member for Hughes and Mr Mark Watkins-Principal Holsworthy High School. The ceremony went extremely well with class representatives, parliament office bearers and ministers receiving recognition of their great efforts throughout the year. The ministers also presented excellent reports. I’d like to thank and congratulate everyone who has contributed to another very successful year of Holsworthy Public School Parliament. It is a great feature of our school, and we should be very proud. I’d also like to thank Ms Papathanasiou and the Year 6 teachers for their great work throughout the year.

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

So long, farewell, Auf Wiedersehen and thank you to Year 6!

SUPER GOLD MORNING TEA On Thursday we held our Super Gold Morning teas for 170 excited awardees. I was lucky enough to share watermelon, chips, cake, drinks, lollies and lots of jokes with these wonderful students. Each student left with a smile and a small present. Congratulations to those students for their continued excellent behaviour and hard work throughout the year. This was a small thank you as a reward.

2018 P&C As we move towards the end of 2018, I would like to personally thank your P&C, led by P&C President Richenda Goodbun, for their hard work and dedication to the students of Holsworthy Public School. We are very fortunate to have so many wonderful volunteers at Holsworthy Public School. The extra assistance from volunteers makes a real difference to the daily functioning of our school. Whether it be helping out covering books, laminating, assisting with P&C events, volunteering time with performing arts, reading, sport etc., we greatly appreciate the support.

STAGE 2 This semester Stage 2 has been learning about the settlement

of Australia. As part of our learning we focused on the inquiry

question ‘Was life the same in 1788 for everyone?’ Classes

researched convict databases and worked in collaborative

groups to plan drama performances. 4J students wrote

historical recounts of the journey of a convict as they were sent

to Australia back in 1787. Here is an example of one.

The Life of Daniel Barnett by Abrar Zaman

My name is Daniel Barnett. I was transported on the ship, Friendship in the year 1787 because the

prisons were overcrowded and the government needed to send us somewhere. My crime was

Street Robbery for stealing 2 iron grapples which were worth 10 shillings. When I went to Court at

Winchester, I was sentenced to go to NSW for 7 years.

I worked as a waterman but I did the wrong thing and committed a crime. I did this because my

pipe at home was leaking. I stole some iron grapples to fix it. Before I was transported, I was held

in old prison hulks on the Thames. I was kept in a cell with another 102 convicts. The conditions

were smelly and the ship was full of dirt and grime. There were huge rats that ran over our bodies

and some went in our shirts. Convicts died with deadly diseases. It was humid and stressful for

convicts when they were all cramped in cells. I needed to vomit every day because of the stench

of the buckets.

I set sail as part of the 11 ships of the First Fleet. I left London on the 13th May. I was held on the

ship Friendship. The ship carried 103 convicts including me. The trip to the new colony was rough

and cramped. Sometimes cold salty water invaded our cells. The salt was disgusting and the water

was freezing. We had disgusting brussel sprouts and cabbage soup. People were regularly infected

by diseases. Luckily I was not infected.

In the new colony, I saw some people speaking a new language which made me scared. They ate

strange animals and had a different coloured skins. They also didn’t wear many clothes.

When I was there I had to make chimneys. My life was hard and I thought my hand would fall apart

because I had to hold heavy bricks all day until night as I helped build new barracks. I once tried

to escape from the wall but a citizen caught me, so back at the barracks I got whipped. Then I got

burnt shackles on my ankles which caused them to become skinny.

Life in the new colony was so different to life back in London. The weather was hot and humid. The

food was disgusting and we had to have the same food every day. I was treated like a pest.

MIND MARATHON CHAMPIONS

On Friday 23 November, three teams of students from the OC competed in the finals of the Mind Marathon, a Gifted and Talented competition run by East Hills Boys High School. The students competed against teams from across the Sydney and Wollongong regions. Earlier in the year, six teams of students from HPS competed in the primary school heats of the Mind Marathon and from that three of our teams returned for the final challenge. It was a day of problem solving and teamwork involving students in answering questions about various topics including English, Mathematics, Science, History and Geography, general knowledge and an engineering task. Congratulations to our mixed girls team; Teresa Yang, Claire Zhang, Angelina Tomy, Chloe Tan, Elly Liang and Katrina Ling, who won the entire competition.
