PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
‘WE ARE A GREAT SCHOOL’ What an incredible day the children had on Thursday November 1 during our Colour Run. It was simply a
day of fun, excitement and success. I am once again extremely proud of the wonderful behaviour and
participation of our students. The smiles on student faces, their enthusiasm and positive attitude all
contributed to a very successful event. The weather, whilst not the kindest with all that heat, still allowed us
to go ahead. Huge thanks to Ms Palmano and Mr Royal for thorough organisation and promotion of the colour
run. Thank you to all the staff who supported the set up of the day and took part in the events. Thank you to
all the parents who were able to attend and thank you to all the families who donated and supported the
school financially. The day was a great success. Students are still expressing their appreciation.
KINDERGARTEN ORIENTATION
Our Kindergarten Orientation program is underway to welcome all the wonderful, enthusiastic Kindies into
our school community for 2019. Thank you to all the parents who have attended the sessions and learnt
about what we will be offering their children as they begin their educational journey. It has been exciting to
meet you all and we look forward to getting to know you even better next year. Remember our final session
is next Wednesday November 14 at 9.30am.
SELECTIVE HIGH SCHOOL PLACEMENT 2020
If you are interested in pursuing placement for your child in a selective high school in 2020, please note the
information below:
Applications for Year 7 entry to selective high schools in 2020 must be made online between 9 October 2018 and 12 November 2018. Late applications will not be accepted.
Parents must apply online at https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-7
All applicants are required to sit the Selective High Schools Placement Test to be held on Thursday 14 March 2019.
STUDENTS AND FAMILIES LEAVING THE SCHOOL (OTHER THAN YEAR 6)
As we progress through Term 4, staff will continue to be looking at the placement of students in their classes
for 2019. Accurate student numbers are important to ensure we made adequate plans for staffing and
classes. To assist in this regard, we ask that if you are aware that your family will no longer be attending
Holsworthy Public School for any reason—please advise the Office at your earliest convenience. If this
information needs to remain confidential, please send in a sealed envelope and send to the office.
ATTENDANCE MATTERS
Attendance and success at school go hand in hand. All students are required to attend school by law
unless there is a valid reason for absence. The school needs to be notified of any absences in writing.
There are a number of students who continue to arrive after 8.55am. These late arrivals are monitored by
the school and by the Home School Liaison Officer. Students need to be at school on time for a positive
start to the day. Students who arrive late miss out on key learning time and also disrupt the learning of
other students.
It is important the school has up-to-date contact information for each student. Should this information
change, by moving to a new address, a new mobile telephone number or custody arrangements change,
please notify the front office.
1 or 2 days a week doesn’t seem much but…..

PRIME MINISTERS AND MINISTERS ELECTIONS FOR 2019 HAVE STARTED Congratulations to our 2018 school leaders but it is now time for us to selection our new ministers for 2019. Students in Year 5 will stand for election to fill the positions of Prime Ministers and Ministers for our School Parliament for 2019. Teachers will talk to all of the students about the upcoming elections explaining the values and responsibilities of school leadership. Students who are nominated must fulfil a list of criteria for a school leadership role. They need to consider this list with their parents before proceeding to the next step. Students then must display one poster promoting themselves and on Election Day present a one minute speech to students in Years 2-5 during a special election assembly in week 6 . This is then followed by the children voting by secret ballot. Good luck to all our candidates

COLOUR RUN- MAJOR SCHOOL FUNDRAISER
Last Thursday, we held our very first Colour Run. We couldn’t have chosen a better day! Students
completed a wide range of obstacles on our back oval and enjoyed having the coloured Holi Powder thrown
at them. All students displayed exceptional behaviour, cooperation and sportsmanship, which helped make
the event a big hit!
A BIG thank you to all staff for your assistance, the P&C for contributing their time and resources, and Mr
Felix for providing us with equipment for the obstacles. Your support and effort is truly appreciated.
Thank you to all students who have returned their Sponsorship Forms and money raised so far. Please
ensure you return them to your classroom teacher as soon as possible.
Mrs Palmano and Mr Royal
CLEAN UP CREW
What wonderful initiative shown by these Year 3
girls. Without being asked, they began cleaning
up rubbish throughout the playground. Thanks
for keeping our school environment a safe place
to be!
AMBASSADOR PROGRAM INITIATIVE
My name is Queenie Pham. I am a Grounds and Environment minister this year
and was selected to represent our school as an ambassador. The ambassador
program is a Primary Principals initiative and is aimed at developing student
leadership skills. Ambassadors work together in groups of 4 to 5 schools. We
brainstorm problems that are common to all schools in the group and pick the one
we think we will make a big impact.
This year’s idea is Outdoor Learning. I think students are too engaged in technology and they forget
about the world around them. I decided to have a 2 hour outdoor time for each class. The executive
teachers helped me find suitable activities for each grade.
Time flexibility was important because outdoor learning is weather dependent.
Ambassadors then create a presentation to give at Liverpool Council on Thursday 8 November. All
students enjoyed their time learning outdoors. I believe I achieved my overall goal and am proud to
be the Ambassdor for Holsworthy Public School 2018.
Ministers Visit Land and Environment Court and State Parliament On Thursday
the 25th of October, the Year 6 Ministerial group went on an excursion to the city and we visited
State Parliament and the Land and Environment Court of New South Wales. Commissioner Gray,
who works at the Land and Environment Court of New South Wales, showed us one of the
courtrooms in the building. Whilst there, we learnt about our legal system and how it is related to
our system of government. We then met with our local MP, Mrs Melanie Gibbons, who gave us a
guided tour around State Parliament. After the tour, we sat in on Question Time in the Legislative
Assembly and got to see what the ministers discuss. It was
definitely a rewarding experience for all of us and it enhanced
our knowledge further about government and how the justice
system works in New South Wales. Thank you to Ms
Papathanasiou and Mrs North for taking us.

NSW Premier’s Spelling Bee State Final
On Friday the 2nd of November, Samaira Zaman from 4T and Aaron Chacko from 5/6A attended
the NSW Premier’s Spelling Bee state final at the ABC Centre in Ultimo. The event was incredibly
competitive with the top 50 students from schools all across NSW competing in both the junior and
senior division. In the junior competition, Samaira performed incredibly well and made it through to
round. This was Samaira’s second time attending the State Spelling Bee competition, as she also
competed last year when she was in year 3. The past two years have been an amazing effort on
her behalf. In the senior competition, it was Aaron Chacko’s first time attending the State Spelling
Bee competition. He was outstanding throughout each round as he was asked to spell some very
challenging words such as harangue, rapacious, grandiloquent and harmonium. Aaron finished the
competition within the top 20 students in the state which is a fantastic effort. Both students
represented our school perfectly on the day and it was evident that they had put in many hours of
hard work in studying and preparing for the event. Congratulations to both Samaira Zaman and
Aaron Chacko, the whole Holsworthy Public School community is proud of your achievements.

SCHOOL SPORT
This term sport has returned to Friday mornings for students in years 3-6. Students need to line up at their classroom to be marked on the roll before meeting at either their PSSA coach's classroom or moving to their OT class. PSSA students will depart school promptly to ensure they arrive at the venue on time.
Students who remain at school spend the first hour of the day engaged in structured OT activities to develop their fine motor skills and coordination. At 9:50 am, these students move to their sport area:
Rec Sport tennis students meet at the library steps to have their name marked off before proceeding to the COLA for their lesson.
Rec Sport hip hop students meet outside the hall to have their name marked off before proceeding inside for their lesson.
Orienteering students meet at 5/6A classroom to have their name marked off before beginning their lesson.
School cricket students meet outside 3S classroom to have their name marked off beforeproceeding to the field to begin their lesson.
All other school sport students meet in the assembly area of the primary playground.
After recess, these students will return to their OT class to engage in a curriculum focus program with their teacher. Once all PSSA teams have arrived at school, students return to their own classroom. A reminder that students MUST have a hat to play PSSA, this is a rule enforced by Liverpool
