Principal’s Message

Students and teachers will commence Term 4 on Monday 14 October.

There is NO Staff Development Day in Term 4.

From the Relieving Principal

I would like to acknowledge and thank the many parents for the kind messages, wonderful gifts and

well wishes for Mr Ward. He was very appreciative. He is receiving ongoing treatment and at this

stage he will still be on leave at the start of Term 4.

Thank you to all parents and members of the school community who have supported the school this

term. It has been an exceptionally productive and busy term with all classrooms across the school

focused on learning and engagement. Students have being active learners through many high

quality learning opportunities that are relevant to their stages of learning and

development.

I would also like to thank Ms Taylor and the school executive team

for their support, care and interest in leading and managing the

school. I would also like to acknowledge the professional and

dedicated staff that work tirelessly to provide high quality learning

experiences and opportunities for our students. Thank you also to

the wonderful SASS staff who support parents, students and

teachers in the smooth running of the school. You should be

assured that Holsworthy Public School is a well organised learning environment.

Thank you to the many wonderful parents who attended the ‘Fun With Robotics’

Parent Workshop. The session was very informative and introduced how the robots

are being integrated into literacy and numeracy programs Kindergarten to Year

6. During the workshop parents had hands-on experience with the robots and the

language the children will be using.

To ensure we are as prepared for 2020 as we can possibly be we need to identify

how many students we will have at the school. If you know of anyone with a child

starting Kindergarten in 2020 and is in area would you please encourage them to

YEAR 5 – CANBERRA/SNOWY MOUNTAINS EXCURSION

Year 5 students from our school have recently undertaken an educational tour of the National

Capital. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs

with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. The Australian Government

recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the National Capital as part

of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion

the Australian Government is contributing funding of $20 per student under the Parliament and

Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs.

YEAR 5 CAMP

On Monday 16 September Year 5 went to Canberra for our 3 day camp. On the first day we were

in Canberra and went to Parliament House. As we got there we could hear cannons going off for

the arrival of the Fijian Prime Minister. On the way in to Parliament House we saw Scott Morrison

and he waved to us. After morning tea we went on a tour of Parliament House. The rooms were

very formal and it was very quiet. We got to do a role play as well and I was the Opposition

Leader.

Going to the snow was the best part but I hated the fact that we had to put our snow gear on – that

was uncomfortable! On the way there we saw a lot of snow covering the trees, making them look

like comfortable floating clouds. When we walked onto the snow it felt like I was walking on clouds.

Mrs North first talked about the limits and boundaries where we could play and then she said

PLAY! All of us sprinted up the hill. Miss Grayson was sliding down the hill with some of the boys.

Miss Hatzitanos and Miss Papathanasiou were getting hit with snowballs! It was so much fun at

the snow.

On the last day we went to the War Memorial where we learned about how the soldiers ended up

overseas in the Wars. It made me feel honoured that our soldiers died for us to have our freedom.

After lunch we went to Questacon. My favourite part was where we got to talk and interact with the

robots.

YEAR 4 CAMP BLURB

On Monday the 16 of September Year 4 gathered in

the hall, excited to leave for their first overnight camp.

We packed our gear and headed off on the short bus

journey to The Royal National Park. What an exciting

two days we had ahead. We built catapults and tested

them, we tried our luck at fishing, learnt about the

mangroves and built sandcastles and tested our

strength on the lower ropes course. Although the

weather was not on our side all of our Stage 2 students

had an excellent time and displayed excellent

behaviour and manners.

KINDERGARTEN OPEN DAY

Last Wednesday, Holsworthy Public School opened the doors of the Kindergarten classrooms to

families of the Kinder 2020. The school Ministers ran the event taking care of everything from

technology to leading the new families around the Kinder classrooms. During this time Kinder

displayed the wonderful things that are happening during their Number and Writing groups. Before

the new families visited all five of our wonderful Kinder rooms they were blown away with the talented

children in the Choir and Drama group. We are so lucky here at Holsworthy to be able to ‘show off’

such wonderful talented student.

DEBATING NEWS

We would like to congratulate all of our debating students who competed this year. Our ‘Titans’

team did a fantastic effort in their round robin winning 2 out of 4 debates. Our ‘Rookies’ team won

3 out of 4 of their debates which meant they progressed through to the knockout rounds, this puts

them in the top 16 schools in the Sydney South West region! In the first knockout round they

debated against Minto Public School ‘That all supermarket promotions like Ooshies and Little

Shops should not be banned’ but in a very close result they lost the debate. Well done to all these

students.

COLOUR RUN

We will be holding a Colour Run this year. Our major fundraising event will be held on Monday 28 October. Our goal is to fundraise $18,000. This is to raise money for classroom technology and resources to support our students as 21st Century learners. The resources include Chromebooks, robotics sets and guided readers.

Each student received a Sponsorship Form which will be used to keep track of every donation they receive. Students need to have a parent or adult present when seeking sponsors. Sponsorship forms need to be returned with the money raised by Friday 25 October. Donations can also be

processed online. Prizes will be awarded to classes and individual students who raised the most money in each grade however, the best prize of all is participating in the Colour run.
