2 Objective 1 Foundations for functions. A function is a set of ordered pairs (x, y) in which each x-coordinate is paired with only one y-coordinate. In a list of ordered pairs belonging to a function, no x-coordinate is repeated.

The distance you can drive an automobile depends on the number of gallons of gas in the car’s fuel tank. This is a good example of a function.
