From the Pastor’s Desk
Dear Parishioners,
We are on the tail end of the twelve days of
Christmas as we celebrate the Epiphany of the
Lord this day. If I may, I hope to shed some light on
the length of the Christmas season and why it is not
always exactly 12 days long. The Church celebrates the
feast days the Holy Family, the Epiphany, and the
Baptism of the Lord within the Christmas season. Some
of these days might fall on a Sunday depending on what
day of the week Christmas Day falls on that particular
year. When any of these feast days do fall on a Sunday,
they are not considered part of the twelve days and
therefore Christmastime lasts longer than twelve days if
you count every day beginning from December 25th. If
you still don’t get it, that’s ok. Christmas will still
come every year.
Today, the Epiphany of the Lord, is traditionally the
“twelfth” day of Christmas. The word ‘epiphany’
translates as ‘manifestation’ or the appearance of God
into the world. He is recognized by all as a light that
has come into the world. He comes to everyone in the
world and that is the significance of the three Magi, or
Kings, or Wise men who come from ‘the east’ meaning
that are not Jewish but gentiles. God sent His son,
Jesus, to and for EVERYONE. These three kings bring
gifts fit for the God king who will offer His life for our
lives. If there is any one hymn that sums up the
meaning of this day, it is “We Three Kings.” Some of
these verses say it all.
Born a king on Bethlehem’s plain,
Gold I bring to crown Him again,
King forever, ceasing never
Over us all to reign.
Frankincense to offer have I.
Incense owns a Deity nigh.
Prayer and praising all men raising,
Worship Him, God on high.
Myrrh is mine: it’s bitter perfume
Breaths a life of gathering gloom.
Sorrowing, sighing, bleeding dying,
Sealed in the stone-cold tomb.
O star of wonder, star of night,
Star with royal beauty bright,
Westward leading, still proceeding,
Guide us to thy perfect Light.
Finally, tomorrow is the Feast of the Baptism of the
Lord and the Chr istmas season officially ends after
Night Prayer tomorrow and Ordinary Time will begin
on Tuesday morning. I want to thank all of our
volunteers who have helped during the past year. I
hope that you all appreciate the hospitality that the staff
of Holy Cross will offer you this afternoon at 4 p.m. in
the church hall. I hope that you have enjoyed this
season of Christmas and may this new year be your best
thus far.
Merry Christmas, Fr. Richard

Respect for Life
Look at the moral decline of our nation over the past 44
years. Abortion is the founda-tion upon which a violent na-tion has been built. When a baby in the womb can be
killed so easily it leads to dis-respect for all life. Violence
breeds violence.

Prayer for Epiphany
Dear Jesus,
though a newborn, the wise men knew your greatness.
On a hint from the heavens, they traveled far from
their places of comfort so that they could honor you.
From their belief in your divinity, they gave amazing
gifts, offerings that symbolized your life, power, and
even your death.
And because of a dream in the night, they altered their
well-laid plans to return home in order to protect you.
May we be so willing to honor, sacrifice, and obey,
all for love of you, as we meditate on the meaning of
this day. Amen.

Active Parishioner Status
We receive many requests from parishioners to qualify for weddings here, or to be godparents or sponsors for the Sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation, and to rightfully enjoy the number of services offered at Holy Cross Parish. Part of that request is to be able to verify that a person is an “active member” of the Parish. Because of the na-ture of our congregation, it is difficult to know everyone.
An “active member” of the parish is one who: Is properly registered and on the parish
census Faithfully attends Mass on Sundays and
Holy Days Participates in parish activities when
possible Uses the parish envelope provided
While assessments of an inquirer's status will be made individually, the above points are the main factors that will be considered in making that determination.
