MISSION STATEMENT ✝ Holy Family Catholic Church is a spiritually and socially active parish. Rooted in the Word of God and nourished by the Eucharist, we cele-brate the life of our Lord Jesus Christ by proclaiming the Good News and providing spiritual growth, support and service with love. Founded by Italian immigrants a century ago, today our parish continues the tradition of extending a loving, caring and affirming welcome to all who join us as we Continue Our Journey of Faith.

Dear Parishioners: In today’s Gospel, Jesus quotes the prophet Isaiah as He addresses the Pharisees and scribes: “This people honors me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines human precepts.” Now the Pharisees were not evil people but somewhat trapped by their own interpretation of religion. Jesus challenged them and the scribes to embrace an authentic religious attitude that demands a total dedication in thought, word and deed, and not merely ritualistic actions that do not demand total commitment. In a poll conducted among 16-29 year olds regarding their perception of Christianity, 87% felt that Christians were too judgmental and 85% felt that Christians were too hypocritical. Again, these are perceptions

that make us ask, are we, at least, giving the appearance of “lip service” or do we honestly only “pay lip service” at times and call it authentic religion. If young people feel this way, someday they will recognize that they, too, are judgmental and hypocritical and, like the Pharisees and scribes, only human and in need of Jesus’ challenging words. Peace, Msgr. Paul STEWARDSHIP CORNER Stewards of the Month - September 2012 The Stewardship Council has named Richard & Debbie Pesci as Stewards of the Month for September 2012. They will receive their certificate and pins at the 8:00 A.M. Mass on Sunday, September 9th. Among other reasons for their recognition as Steward of the Month is the fact that Rich has donated an enormous amount of time talent and treasure to help relieve the parish’s debt to the school by replacing floor tiles this summer. MAINTENANCE UPDATE Parking Lot: Efforts have been made to temporarily upgrade and regulate our upper parking lot. We are grateful to Barbara Miller for her Stewardship in having numbered spots painted for designated parkers and Perry Zirpoli for his efforts to supervise the removal of unauthorized vehicles. New Truck: The Financial Council has researched and purchased a new truck with a snowplow so that we can resume our own snow plowing. The funds for this purchase came from your generosity in the second collection. The 2012 season for The Giving Garden is turning out to be a very productive one! Located on Msgr. DeLuca Plaza across from the bell tower of the Church, the garden is flourishing in its new location. What started out in 2011 as a pilot project, whose purpose was to assist the parish’s Food Pantry with fresh vegetables, has grown into a new segment of the Social Concerns Committee assisting the poor. Initially the garden consisted of three 4’ x 12’ raised beds placed on the north side of the Parish Center. After a request for funds from the parish at all the Masses in early June 2011, the parish responded with funds to help the project get off the ground. Around that same time, we were contacted by Patrice Kelly, the Director of “A Lot To Grow.” Ms. Kelly is a Glen Ridge resident and Master Gardener. A Lot To Grow, Inc., is a New Jersey Non-Profit Organization 501(c)3. It is a community garden initiative designed to grow vegetables for use in local soup kitchens, food pantries and subsidized senior housing facilities. This organization has lent administrative and financial support to our garden and enabled our volunteers to provide a garden that, last year, supplied our food pantry with 235 pounds of produce. We have also received help and donations from the town of Nutley and several area businesses. This year we have expanded to 8 raised beds. As of August 22, we harvested over 210 pounds of produce which we have been able to share with our food pantry, the Nutley Red Cross food pantry, Vincent Methodist Church Care Kitchen and Toni's Kitchen, a food ministry at St Luke's Episcopal Church in Montclair. We have also been assisted by The United Way with advice and press releases. This month, due to articles which were sent to area newspapers, we received additional contributions of produce from individuals with home gardens who were willing to share with the poor. The Giving Garden volunteers work in the garden regularly on Tuesdays and Thursday, from 8:00 to 11:00 A.M. If anyone has any extra produce to share with the poor, you may drop it off at the garden during these hours or call Liz Liloia at 973-284-1539. Liz is the site manager and also a Master Gardener. The Giving Garden is managed by volunteers from the parish, fellow Nutleyites and several Master Gardeners. If you would like to volunteer some time with us, please give Liz a call. We have volunteers who work in the garden on individual days and hours depending on their schedules. The volunteers are in the process of planting now

for a third season crop this year. Even an occasional hour or two has proven to be a tremendous help. Next weekend, September 8/9, you are invited to visit the Giving Garden after Mass. Please come over to meet the volunteers and see what we have growing.

MARIA SS. ADDOLORATA OFFERING BLANKET Several years ago, we introduced the “Maria SS. Addolorata Offering Blanket” to the Italian Festival. It has proven to be a beautiful acknowledgment of our Sorrowful Mother. A donation on the Offering Blanket brings hope to the ill, is in memory of the deceased, or is offered for a very special intention. On the 2nd Friday of each month, a special Italian Mass in honor of The Devotees of Maria Santissima Addolorata is offered for their intentions at 7:00 P.M. During the festival, the blanket will be on display in our Italian Café for the entire 4 days. The presentation of the blanket will take place on Saturday evening, during the candlelight procession following the 7:00 PM Mass. If you wish to take part in the Offering Blanket, you may submit your donation to Holy Family Church along with the intention you wish for the blanket. Kindly make your check payable to Holy Family Church, but mark the envelope MEMORIAL BLANKET. As always, the blanket will be a magnificent tribute to Our Lady of Sorrows. For more information, please call Gina Tamburri at 973-751-4187.

TENT SPONSORS If you wish to sponsor a tent at the feast, the cost for a sole sponsor is $100.00 or, if you wish to share it with another person, $50.00. As you are aware, this booth sponsorship helps the parish pay the very costly rental fee of the tents. The committee has beautiful signboards that are placed in each tent with your

Network of Prayers This year, during the Lenten season, we started a program, “Network of Prayers to Jesus in the

Blessed Sacrament.” 475 people joined the program and made the resolution of sending their mind and heart to Jesus, at least for a moment, during a certain

hour of the day or night. Hopefully, all those who joined the Network have been remembering their moment of prayer to Jesus from their homes or work places. If anyone has forgotten to do so, this is the right time to restart. A poster will be put in the vestibule of the Church and will include the hours of choice and the names of those who decided to pray to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. DONATION ENVELOPES Please be sure to enter the amount of your donation on your envelope in order for you to receive proper credit. If you do not presently use donation envelopes and would like to, please stop by the rectory office to complete

a parishioner registration form. Parish Pay, another very convenient way to donate, is available and information is on the cover of this bulletin.

STAND AND BE COUNTED: NEW MEMBERS WELCOME

Registering in a parish is a declaration of your desire to be part of a Catholic community and a commitment to the life of the parish family. To so clearly state your Catholic commitment in all its dimensions brings you advantages, recognition, and responsibilities of many kinds. Being a registered parishioner makes

things much easier when it is time for infant baptism, school registration, weddings, when asked to be a baptismal or confirmation sponsor, and even funerals. We are often asked to provide affidavits for baptismal and confirmation sponsors. We can only do this if a person is a registered, active, and contributing member in our parish. How do you know if you are already registered? A registered parishioner receives all parish mailings. Most recently, a newly revised census form was sent with the summer newsletter and upcoming raffles. We ask that you complete that form — or complete it on the web: www.holyfamilynutley.org — as soon as you have the opportunity.

NOMINATION FOR STEWARD OF THE MONTH

When deciding to nominate a person for the Steward of the Month Award, we should consider the following: The TIME that this person dedicates to parish activities, community events, personal time with others

in need of assistance, spiritual aid and/or companionship. The TALENT that this person offers to the parish and community, willingly and lovingly. The TREASURE this person offers to the parish and community. Has he or she accepted the divine call to extend God’s blessings on those less fortunate through personal sacrificial giving? These are important factors to consider when proposing a person for nomination. Often a prayer to the Holy Spirit is helpful, too, in discerning the name for nomination. Please fill out the nomination form and return it in an envelope marked “Stewardship Committee” to nominate a parishioner as Steward of the Month. ✄-------------------------------------------------------------------------

YOUTH GROUP HOSTS CLOTHING DRIVE

The Youth Group needs your help! Last week our members visited Covenant House in Newark. This organization takes in homeless youth and provides a nurturing environment where their basic needs are met. Covenant House also provides occupation counseling to help the youth find jobs and begin planning their lives. In order to provide these services, Covenant House relies on the generosity of their donors. Unfortunately, there are not enough business/casual attire for these young adults to wear for their job interviews. The majority of the young adults who live in Covenant House do not own such clothing. They need your support and prayer more than ever! On September 8th - 9th (Saturday and Sunday) members of our Youth Group will be stationed in the vestibule of the Church after each Mass to collect your donations. All sizes welcome for the young men and women. These items must be in good condition as they are to be used on job interviews - please, no stained clothing or missing buttons, etc. Examples: Business Appropriate suits, shirts, blouses, sweaters, skirts, dresses, dress pants, ties, and shoes. The Youth Group thanks you for your continuous support and generosity!

The Youth Group thanks Barbara Carrino, operator of the Care Kitchen at Vincent United Methodist Church, for welcoming our members to serve in their kitchen. Every month, Vincent Methodist opens their auditorium to serve many in the community. Our teens offered a helping hand preparing

and serving the food and provided clean up services last Saturday. As they were departing, the youth expressed the desire to return and volunteer once again. SAVE THE DATE!! On Saturday, November 3rd, the Youth Group will be hosting our 3rd annual Tricky Tray in the gymnasium of Good Shepherd Academy. This is our major fundraiser for the youth minis try. More information will soon follow. If you are interested in joining our Youth Ministry please contact either: Amy DiCristo, 201-965-2128 or John O'Reilly, 973-202-2321
