LIFT UP YOUR HEARTS! Preparation for the revised Roman Missal, third typical edition by Jerry Back

In preparation for the implementation of the revised Roman Missal, third typical edition, the Archdiocese of San Francisco has prepared a series of instruction that will appear in the bulletin each week so that when the First Sunday of Advent arrives on November 27, 2011, we will be ready to worship with our hearts lifted! Question: Is it true that when revisions are implemented next Advent we will no longer respond with "And also with you?" Answer from the Archdiocese of San Francisco: When we finally make the switch to the new edition of the Roman Missal with its revised English translation, we will respond to the bishop, priest, or deacon who says, "The Lord be with you," or "Peace be with you," by saying, "And with your spirit." This is a more literal translation of the original Latin response, "Et cum spiritu tuo." "And with your spirit" recalls the way St. Paul gave his blessing to the people to whom he wrote. He wrote to Tim-othy, "The Lord be with your spirit" (2 Tim 4:22) and to the Galatians, "The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit" (Gal 6:18). This new way of replying to the minister in Mass will align English-speaking Catholics with many other language groups who already respond in a similar way in their wor-ship. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DID YOU KNOW? Among the major Western transla-tions of the Roman Rite since the 2nd Vatican Council, English is the only one that did not translate the word spiritu: SPANISH: Y con tu espiritu. ITALIAN: E con il tuo spirito. FRENCH: Et avec votre esprit. GERMAN: Und mit deinem Geiste. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I don't know about you, but I'll be mentally thinking "And with your spirit" while still saying "And also with you" throughout the coming months. Let's all begin to prepare so that when the time comes, we will respond together in one voice "And with your spirit."

A small portion of Jerry Back’s article was cut off in last week’s bulletin. Here’s what’s missing: LIFT UP YOUR HEARTS PART 2: "(God) has...willed to make women and men holy and to save them, not as individuals without any bond between them, but rather to make them into a people who might acknowledge him and serve him in holiness."

FAZtor’s Notes By Fr. Arnold Zamora The first two months of the New Year 2011 have gone by so quickly. It feels like we just celebrated Christmas and some of us are not yet done putting away the Christmas dec-orations. Now we are about to begin the sea-son of Lent, starting with Ash Wednesday this week. The day before that, of course, is

Mardi Gras or “Fat Tuesday,” referring to the practice of the last night of eating richer, fatty foods before the ritual fasting of the Lenten season. Mardi Gras observance comes early in our parish as we celebrate the 62nd Annual Holy Name St. Patrick’s Day Dinner Dance. And so, after enjoying deli-cious corned beef, Mardi Gras becomes “So Fat Tuesday!”

We acknowledge those who helped in the preparation of this special annual dinner and we express our ardent gratitude to them, especially those who have been the regu-lar volunteers for the past 30+ years. This dinner is special because we are “having fun to let others have fun.” It is not just about the food and the dance, but also about the chil-dren who will benefit from our enjoyment. The St. Patrick’s Dinner has been a great fundraising event for our Sports Program. And it has paid off. This year has been a great and exciting year for our sports program. Imagine, out of nine HN Basketball teams that went to the championship games in the CYO, six teams came out as the champions and the three other teams were second place. And again, for the record, the last time we won the Holy Name-St Cecilia Bas-ketball Tournament was 25 years ago. This year we have reclaimed the glory.

Our boys’ bathroom at the gym got a new face lift with a new stall and urinal partitions. Thanks to Mike Downing for installing the partitions. Mike is in charge of our Baseball Program, with its season just starting. Mike quips, “Baseball is like Church, a lot of people want to go; only a few under-stand.”

Soon we will have a high quality Sound System at the Gym. Mr. Silver Cusi, a school parent, initiated a fundrais-ing drive to raise money to upgrade our existing system. Silver, together with his wife Rose, has also been busy in-stalling security cameras for our church. Thanks to their diligence and hard work, the church is now protected day and night.

Lesson for this week keeping “Fat Tuesday”, the St. Patrick’s Dinner, and the Sports Program in mind:

You have to stay in shape. My grandmother started walking five miles a day when she was 60. She's 97 today and we don't know where she is.

Dear Holy Name Families, Many parents volunteered to make our Math-a-Thon a big success. The team of diligent workers who helped with organization, collecting and correcting math papers, calculating final amounts due, counting all of the money, and serving ice cram sundaes to the students was led by Monica Syler (Tristan 2nd gd) and assisted by Alci-ra Bermudez (Diego 3rd gd). Thank you to Monica and Alcira and to the following parents: Yelena Zherebin (Vlad 3rd gd & Max 8A), Elaine Brannigan (Sean 7B & Chloe 6B), Jessica Porteous (Leilani 8B), Donna Kerwin (Kamaria 7A & Shakira 7B), Sandy Song (Rachel “K”), Yvette Yang (Kristen 5B), Katty May (Samuel “K” & Isai-ah 3B), Christian Ignatius (Ethan 2nd gd), Wei Liu (Ty 5A), Carol Murphy (Sean 3rd gd & Emma 6B), Liz Ibalio (Sophia & Claire 1st gd) and Vera Genkin (Nick Tuttle 7B). The Math-a-Thon was a successful fundraiser because of hard work and wonderful participation from many of our parents. Thank you for your continued sup-port of Holy Name School. God bless you. Sincerely, Mrs. Judy Cosmos MATHCOUNTS On Saturday, February 26th, ten eighth grade students represented Holy Name School at the 28th annual MATHCOUNTS competition, presented by the Califor-nia Society of Professional Engineers and the San Francis-co Unified School District. The competition was held at Lawton Alternative School. The following students repre-sented Holy Name School: Matthew Chai, Brandan Hui, Alisa Poon, Sien Tam, Kaman Chan, Selina Fong, Toby Lee, Michelle Situ, Samantha Tan, and Marc Tran. The team was coached by Ms. Kimberly Huie. We had an ex-citing, math-filled day! AUCTION 2011 UPDATE The Leave Your Heart in San Francisco Live and Si-lent Auction is fast approaching. The date is Saturday, April 9th, from 6:00 - 11:00 p.m. and it will once again be held in Ryan Hall. Please mark your calendar and get your babysitters lined up. This will be a great party and chance to step out and enjoy an evening of food, drink, entertainment - and, of course, BIDDING! Please visit www.holynamesf.com to see updated lists of auction items, download forms and get general auction info. During the month of March, we'd like to really step up our solicitation and donation efforts and make this not only a fun, but hugely successful fundraising evening for our school. Stay tuned...next week we will announce a VERY exciting raffle, with all four prizes to be announced on the even-ing of the event. Come on Holy Name families - let's work togeth-er as a community!
