SUMMER SUNDAY SOCIAL

DEFENDING LIFE! Virginia state legislators have formed a commission to study whether physician-assisted suicide should be legal in our Commonwealth. The commission will soon make a policy recommendation based on that study. A public comment period on the proposal opens on August 22. Bishop Burbidge has asked us to contact our legislators to voice our opposition to the plan. As Catholics, we can – and should – use this opportunity to defend the precious gift of all life, from conception to natural death. For more on the proposal that would legalize physician-assisted suicide in Virginia, and how to contact legisla-tors, please see the flyer in this issue of the bulletin or visit https://bit.ly/VCCassistedsuicide after August 22. QUEENSHIP OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY Also on August 22, the same day the public comment period opens for the assisted-suicide proposal, the Church celebrates the memorial of the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary. May we implore her aid in defeat-ing any effort to facilitate the death of others through assisted suicide. Designated in 1954 by Pope Pius XII for May 31 (hence the “Queen of the May”), Mary’s Queenship is now fittingly celebrated on the eighth day, or octave day, of the Solemnity of the Assumption. She is called Queen of Heaven because her son, Jesus Christ, is the heavenly king of the universe. Indeed, the Davidic tradition of Israel historically recognized the mother of the king as the queen mother. From the earliest centuries of the Church, the faithful have offered prayers of supplication and dedicated hymns of praise to the Queen of Heaven. Because she is queen in the royal family of the baptized, she is a powerful intercessor for all of us. One of the questions in the application we completed to be named a Basilica is: “How many images of Mary with her royal crown are in your church?” Do you know?

SAVE THE DATE! Saturday, September 8 is the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, patron of our parish, and an important feast day for the Basilica. We will have Mass with Bishop Burbidge at 10 a.m., followed by a reception. Please note: There will be no 8:30 a.m. Mass or morning confessions that day. Watch for more details in upcoming issues of the bulletin and posted on our parish website, www.stmaryoldtown.org.

WORSHIP & FAITH FORMATION

O COME LET US ADORE HIM! Spend as much time as possible

in front of the Blessed Sacrament and He will fill you with His

strength and His power. — St. Teresa of Calcutta

Consider spending an hour with Our Lord in Eucha-ristic Adoration on Wednesdays. Adoration is YOUR own personal time with Jesus Christ. It integrates the entire faith community at St. Mary, uniting us in our intentions and concerns, increasing our prayer time and devotion. Many miracles and blessings have been associ-ated with Adoration. Our Wednes-day Adoration begins after the 12:10 p.m. Mass and continues until 7:30 p.m., fol-lowed by a Holy Hour with Compline. (During sanctu-ary renovation, Adoration and Holy Hour will take place in the Lyceum Auditorium on Wednesdays.) If you have any questions or if you would like to com-mit to an hour (or more!) a month, contact Maureen Breiner at 703.360.1857 or [email protected].

Are you (or someone you know) interested in becoming Catholic? Are you a baptized Catholic who has not re-ceived First Holy Communion

and Confirmation? To find out more about RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) and register for this year’s class, visit https://stmaryoldtown.org/apostolate/rcia/ or contact St. Mary’s Director of Religious Education Hilary Munger at [email protected] or call her at 703.836.4100 extension 3033.

DAILY MASS READINGS Including audio and reflections are available from the U.S. Conference

of Catholic Bishops at www.usccb.org/bible/readings. Sign up to have daily readings

sent to you via email!

During renovation of the Basilica sanctuary, our regular WEEKDAY Masses

(6:30 a.m., 8 a.m. and 12:10 p.m.), Confessions (after 12:10 p.m. Mass),

Adoration and Holy Hour (Wednesdays) will take place in the Lyceum Auditorium

SAINTS THIS WEEK

August 20 — St. Bernard of Clairvaux. French abbot and a major leader in the reform of Benedictine mo-nasticism that caused the formation of the Cistercian order. Born in 1090 and died on August 20, 1153. August 21 — St. Pius X, Pope. Born Giuseppe Sarto in 1835 in Riese, Italy. As a priest and pastor, he min-istered to the poor and supported them from his own modest household. Elected Pope Pius X in 1903; pro-moted the importance of catechesis. August 23 — St. Rose of Lima. Born in Lima, Peru, in 1586. Devoted to St. Catherine of Siena and, like Catherine, entered the Dominican Third Order. Wore a spiked crown disguised with roses and slept on a bed of broken tiles, mortifications endured for the conver-sion of sinners and Native Peruvians. Canonized in 1671, the first saint of the New World. August 24 — St. Bartholomew, Apostle and Martyr. One of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus. Preached the Gospel in India and greater Armenia. He is said to have suffered the torture of being flayed, or skinned. August 25 — St. Louis IX, the only king of France to be canonized. Born in 1214, he became king at age 12. Married; father of 11 children. A follower of St. Fran-cis of Assisi, Louis was known for his ardent piety and sanctity. He invited the poor to his own table each day, where he waited on them. Known as the "Peace King," he mediated between popes and German Emperors to keep France out of war. Led two Crusades to the Holy Land. Died in 1270. St. Joseph Calasanz was born in Spain in 1556. Resigned his position as vicar general in his diocese and went to Rome to care for abandoned children. Founded free public schools and the Piarists, an order to educate the poor and disadvantaged.

50th ANNIVERSARY OF HUMANAE VITAE This year marks the 50th anniversary of the publication of Pope Paul VI's prophetic encyclical, Humanae Vitae. The Arlington Catholic Herald is taking a look at the legacy of this important document on marriage and human life, with an extensive focus on the issue of contraception and the Church’s teaching on it. For links to the full text of the document and commentary on its practical approach to intimate love, marriage and the dignity of the human per-son, go to bit.ly/humanaevitae50.

Some are still available for a donation of $70 or more to the Basilica Foundation, which supports improvements and preservation of the Basilica. Specially crafted by the renowned firm Ghirelli of Rome, the ro-sary reflects our Basilica’s distinctive architectural appointments. To see more and order a Basilica Rosary, visit https://stmaryoldtown.org/basilica-rosary/.
