OUR “NEW” ALTAR RAIL At last, our altar rail is in place, surrounding our sanctuary in historic, magnificent marble. More than 100 years old, the rail formerly adorned St. Jerome Catholic Church in Hyattsville, MD. It was hand carved by an era of artists and skilled craftsmen who devoted their talents to many incredi-bly beautiful cathedrals and basilicas throughout the world. The rail is made of Carrara marble from the Tuscan region of Italy, the same quarries used by Michelan-gelo for his commissions, including his Pieta and statue of David. Carrara marble is unique for its whiteness (without grey veins) and purity and is usually used only for statuary. According to Louis R. DiCocco of St. Jude Liturgical Arts Studio, who did our sanctuary renovation work, the artistry and workmanship are unlike anything that can be produced today. Each cherub and floral node is entirely hand carved. The Eucharistic-themed posts were individually carved and each have a unique characteristic exemplifying their one-of-a-kind artistry. We are truly blessed to have this “resurrected” art piece grace our Basilica of St. Mary.

WITNESSES FOR CHRIST Today, September 16, is Catechetical Sunday. This year’s theme is “Enlisting Witnesses for Jesus Christ.” Those who will serve our parish in the coming year as catechists in our Religious Education/CCD programs will be commissioned for their ministry as part of our 11:30 a.m. Mass today. Catechetical Sunday also is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the role we each play, by virtue of our Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. Catechetical Sunday is a great time to rededicate ourselves to this mission as a parish family of faith. Another form of catechesis begins tomorrow evening, Monday, September 17, with our RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) classes. This is the process by which adults can enter the Catholic Church. If you or someone you know would like to know more, contact Director of Religious Education Hilary Munger at [email protected] or 703.836.4100 extension 3033.

EUCHARISTIC APOSTLES OF THE DIVINE MERCY

Sooner would heaven and earth turn into nothingness than would My mercy not embrace a trusting soul.

(Diary of St. Faustina, 1777) An apostolate of the Marian Fathers of the Immacu-late Conception and under the patronage of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the Eucharistic Apostles of the Divine Mercy use a small group or cenacle format to experi-ence our Catholic Faith. The purpose is to spread the truth of the Real Presence in the Eucharist and live the Divine Mercy message based on a deeper trust in

God, a greater ability to forgive and be merciful to others. St. Mary’s Cen-acle meets the second and fourth Tuesdays each month, 10 a.m. in the Fr. Rankin House, 314 Duke Street. Contact Lynne or Harry Dolton at 703.960.0592 or [email protected] for more information.

LORD TEACH ME TO PRAY Would you like to develop a deeper relationship with God by learning to pray in the spirit of St. Ignatius of Loyola? Participate in Lord, Teach Me To Pray (LTMTP), a three-part, 12-week prayer series for women based on Ignatian Spirituality. Part 1: Praying Christian Virtues, introduces you to the meditative, contemplative Ignatian way of pray-er. We meet as a group for two hours each week. Partici-pants also are asked to spend 15 minutes in prayer each day on assigned Scripture passages. Starts on Tuesday, September 25, at 316 Duke Street (two doors down from the Rectory), 10 a.m. to 12 noon. To participate in the group, contact Bonnie Hourigan at 571.309.1693 or [email protected]; or Bettie-Rae Mader at [email protected] by September 20.

TRADITIONAL LATIN MASS

The next Mass will be at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Septem-ber 21, celebrated by Fr. David Dufresne, St. Mary parochial vicar. Missals are provided with the Mass parts in Latin and English.

THIS WEEK September 17 — St. Robert Bellarmine, SJ. Bish-op, Doctor of the Church. Canonized in 1930 and named Doctor of the Church, one of only 36. He was one of the most important figures in the Counter-Reformation. Patron of catechists and catechumens. September 19 — St. Januarius. Bishop, Martyr. According to legend, thrown to bears under the Em-peror Diocletian, circa 305. Since 1389, a vial of his solidified blood in Naples is said to liquefy miracu-lously when venerated on his feast day. September 20 — Sts. Andrew Kim Tae-gon Priest. Paul Chong Ha-Sang and Companions, Martyrs. Andrew was a convert to the faith and the first Korean-born Catholic priest. In 1846, he was tortured and beheaded along with seminarian Paul Chong Ha-Sang. Between 1839 and 1867, 103 mar-tyrs gave their lives for the faith in Korea. September 21 — St. Matthew. Apostle, Evange-list. Martyr. Worked as a tax collector, a des-pised profession during the time of Christ. According to the Gospel, Matthew was working at a collection booth in Capernaum when Christ came to him and asked, "Follow me." With this simple call, Matthew became a disciple of Christ.

Through September 30, the Knights of Columbus, with the Basilica of St. Mary School Honor Society, are conducting their annual coat drive to support the local community. Through your generosity we previously collected more than 300 coats for men, women and youth, providing warmth and comfort to many through the winter season. Please place your gently used winter coats in the boxes at the back of the Basilica. A separate collection site is located in the school lobby. Children’s coats are particularly needed. The Knights will have the coats cleaned and distributed to those in need. Thank you for supporting this worthy effort. www.kofc459.org
