    LITURGY OF THE WORD

    First Reading 1 John 3:14-16

A reading from the first Letter of Saint John

Beloved: We know that we have passed from death tolife because we love our brothers. Whoever does notlove remains in death. Everyone who hates his brotheris a murderer, and you know that no murderer haseternal life remaining in him. The way we came toknow love was that he laid down his life for us; so weought to lay down our lives for our brothers.

The word of the Lord.R/ Thanks be to God.

  • Responsorial Psalm Psalm 42:2,3,5cdef, 43:3,4,5Peter J. Latona (b.1968)

R/ My soul is thirsting for the living God:when shall I see him face to face?

As the hind longs for the running waters,so my soul longs for you, O God. R/

Athirst is my soul for God, the living God.When shall I go and behold the face of God? R/

I went with the throng and led them in processionto the house of God. Amid loud cries of joy and thanksgiving, with the multitude keeping festival. R/

Send forth your light and your fidelity;they shall lead me on

And bring me to your holy mountain,to your dwelling-place. R/

The will I go in to the altar of God,the God of my gladness and joy; Then will I give you thanks upon the harp,O God, my God! R/

Why are you so downcast, O my soul? Why do you sigh within me?

Hope in God! For I shall again be thanking him,in the presence of my savior and my God. R/

Gospel Acclamation Mode IPeter J. Latona (b.1968)

    Matthew 25:34

Come, you who are blessed by my Father, says theLord; inherit the kingdom prepared for you from thefoundation of the world. R/

    Gospel Luke 24:13-16, 28-35

V/ The Lord be with you.R/ And with your spirit.

@ A reading from the holy Gospel according to LukeR/ Glory to you, O Lord.

That very day, the first day of the week, two of thedisciples of Jesus were going to a village called Emmaus, seven miles from Jerusalem, and they were conversingabout all the things that had occurred. And it happenedthat while they were conversing and debating, Jesushimself drew near and walked with them, but their eyeswere prevented from recognizing him.

As they approached the village to which they were going,he gave the impression that he was going on farther. Butthey urged him, “Stay with us, for it is nearly eveningand the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay withthem.

  • 9

And it happened that, while he was with them at table,he took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it tothem. With that their eyes were opened and theyrecognized him, but he vanished from their sight. Thenthey said to each other, “Were not our hearts burningwithin us while he spoke to us on the way and openedthe Scriptures to us?” So they set out at once andreturned to Jerusalem where they found gatheredtogether the Eleven and those with them, who weresaying, “The Lord has truly been raised and has appearedto Simon!”

Then the two recounted what had taken place on the wayand how he was made known to them in the breaking ofthe bread.

The Gospel of the Lord.R/ Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Guidelines for the Reception of CommunionFor Catholics: As Catholics, we fully participate in the celebration ofthe Eucharist when we receive Holy Communion. We are encouragedto receive Communion devoutly and frequently. In order to be properly disposed to receive Communion, participants should not beconscious of grave sin and normally should have fasted for one hour.A person who is conscious of grave sin is not to receive the Body andBlood of the Lord without prior sacramental confession except for agrave reason where there is no opportunity for confession. In thiscase, the person is to be mindful of the obligation to make an act ofperfect contrition, including the intention of confessing as soon aspossible (canon 916). A frequent reception of the Sacrament ofPenance is encouraged for all.

For our fellow Christians: We welcome our fellow Christians tothis celebration of the Eucharist as our brothers and sisters. We praythat our common baptism and the action of the Holy Spirit in thisEucharist will draw us closer to one another and begin to dispel thesad divisions which separate us. We pray that these will lessen andfinally disappear, in keeping with Christ’s prayer for us “that theymay all be one” (Jn 17:21).

Because Catholics believe that the celebration of the Eucharist is asign of the reality of the oneness of faith, life, and worship, members of those churches with whom we are not yet fully united are ordinarily not admitted to Holy Communion.Eucharistic sharing in exceptional circumstances by otherChristians requires permission according to the directives of thediocesan bishop and the provisions of canon law (canon 844 § 4).Members of the Orthodox Churches, the Assyrian Church of theEast, and the Polish National Catholic Church are urged to respectthe discipline of their own Churches. According to Roman Catholicdiscipline, the Code of Canon Law does not object to the receptionof communion by Christians of these Churches (canon 844 § 3).

For those not receiving Holy Communion: All who are not receiving Holy Communion are encouraged to express in theirhearts a prayerful desire for unity with the Lord Jesus and with oneanother.

For non-Christians: We also welcome to this celebration those whodo not share our faith in Jesus Christ. While we cannot admit themto Holy Communion, we ask them to offer their prayers for thepeace and the unity of the human family.
