The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass

According to the Rite of

The Catholic Church of the Americas

The Celebration of the Mass in the Rite of the Catholic Church of the Americas (CCA) is not identical to other “high” liturgical denominations. The Mass is similar to that of the Roman Catholic Church and the Anglican (Episcopal) Church. The CCA Mass, however, should be the primary form of communal worship in that it does distinguish us from other denominations and it is something that is “ours.” Until the CCA Mass is translated into the vernacular of the people, priests are allowed be use the Roman Rite or the 1979 Book of Common Prayer used by the Episcopalians in the United States and Anglicans throughout the world, but the CCA Mass should be used within three years of the foundation of the church/ministry. As Christ is the Teacher, priests should use this introduction of the CCA Mass as a teachable moment. An attempt was made to use all-inclusive language and gender-neutral terminology. If there is a need for a congregation to participate in the Latin/Tridentine Mass, this is allowed but the Ordinary Diocesan Bishop must approve its use. Mass should begin with a procession including (in order) a crucifer, two acolytes with candle, any persons who will be assisting/participating in the celebration of the Mass, invited guests, deacons, celebrant. If the celebrant is a bishop, the deacon(s) will process in after the bishop. As each person arrives to the altar, they are to bow and proceed to their assigned position. Once the celebrant arrives at the altar he/she should kiss the altar and, if incense is used, do so at this time.

Homily

A homily shall be given on all Sundays and holy days of obligation; it is recommended for other days.

Profession of Faith

After the homily, the profession of faith is said on Sundays and solemnities; it may also be said in solemn local celebrations.

All I believe in one God, the Creator almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Creator before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, one in being with the Creator;

through whom all things were made. For us and for our salvation, God came down from heaven, (bow for the next two lines:)

and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became human. For our sake, Jesus was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day, in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into Heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Creator. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his dominion will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Creator, who with the Creator and the Redeemer is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass According to the Rite of the Catholic Church of the Americas

20

I believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Liturgy of the Eucharist

After the liturgy of the word, the ministers place the corporal, the purificator, the chalice, and the missal on the altar. Sufficient hosts (and wine) for the communion of the faithful are to be prepared. It is most important that the faithful should receive the Body of the Lord in hosts consecrated at the same Mass and should have the cup when it is permitted. Communion is thus a clearer sign of sharing in the sacrifice which is actually taking place. If the priest decides to offer the faithful both the Body and Blood of Christ, due to health reasons, the method of intinction is preferable.

21

The priest, standing at the altar, takes the paten with the bread, and, holding it slightly raised above the altar, says inaudibly:

Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, for through your goodness we have received the bread we offer you: fruit of the earth and work of human hands, it will become for us the bread of life. Then the priest places the paten with the bread on the corporal. If no offertory song is sung, the priest may say the preceding words in an audible voice; then the people may respond:

R Blessed be God forever. The deacon (or the priest) pours wine and a little water into the chalice, saying inaudibly:

By the mystery of this water and wine may we come to share in the divinity of Christ who humbled himself to share in our humanity.

The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass According to the Rite of the Catholic Church of the Americas

22

Then the priest takes the chalice and, holding it slightly raised above the altar, says inaudibly:

Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, for through your goodness we have received the wine we offer you: fruit of the vine and work of human hands, it will become our spiritual drink. Then the priest places the chalice on the corporal. If no offertory song is sung, the priest may say the preceding words in an audible voice; then the people may respond:

R Blessed be God forever. The priest bows and says inaudibly:

With humble spirit and contrite heart may we be accepted to you, O Lord, and may our sacrifice in your sight this day be pleasing to you, Lord God.

23

The priest may now incense the offerings and the altar. Afterwards the deacon or a minister incenses the priest and the people. Next the priest stands at the side of the altar and washes his/her hands, saying inaudibly:

Wash me, O Lord, from my iniquity and cleanse me from my sins. Standing at the center of the altar, facing the people, the priest extends and then joins his/her hands, saying:

V Pray, my brothers and sisters, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God, the almighty Creator.

R May the Lord accept the sacrifice

at your hands for the praise and glory of God’s name, for our good and the good of all the Holy Church.

V Amen.

24

The Eucharistic Prayer

The priest begins the Eucharistic Prayer. With hands extended the priest says:

V The Lord be with you. R And with your spirit. V Lift up your hearts. R We lift them up to the Lord. V Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. R It is right and just. It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to give you thanks, Lord, Holy Creator, almighty and eternal God. For, although you have no need of our praise,

25

yet our thanksgiving is itself your gift, since our praises add nothing to your greatness but profit us for salvation, through Christ our Lord. And so, in company with the choirs of Angels, we praise you, and with joy we proclaim: At the end of the preface, the priest joins his/her hands and, together with the people, concludes it by saying or singing aloud:

ALL: HOLY, HOLY, HOLY Lord God of hosts, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The priest, with hands extended says:

26

V To you, therefore, most merciful Creator, we make humble prayer and petition through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord:

The priest joins his/her hands and, making the sign of the cross once over both bread and chalice, says:

that you accept and bless + these gifts, these offerings, these holy and unblemished sacrifices, which we offer you firstly for your holy catholic Church. With hands extended, the priest continues:

Be pleased to grant the Church peace, to guard, unite and govern the Church throughout the whole world, together with our bishop N. and all those who, holding to the truth, hand on the catholic and apostolic faith.

27

Celebrant alone or one of the concelebrants:

Remember, Lord, your people,

especially those for whom we now pray,

N. and N.

The celebrant joins his/her hands and prays for them briefly. Then, with hands extended, the celebrant continues:

Remember, Lord, your servants gathered here, whose faith and devotion are known to you. For them, we offer you this sacrifice of praise or they offer it for themselves and all who are dear to them: for the redemption of their souls, in hope of health and well-being, and paying their homage to you, the eternal God, living and true.

28

In union with those whose memory we venerate, especially the glorious Mary, Mother of our God and Lord, Jesus Christ, and blessed Joseph, her Spouse, your blessed Apostles and Martyrs, and all your Saints; we ask that through their merits and prayers, in all things, we may be defended by your protecting help. God, accept this offering from your whole family. Grant us your peace in this life, save us from final damnation, and count us among those you have chosen. The priest joins his/her hands. Both celebrant and concelebrants, with hands outstretched over the offerings, says:

The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass According to the Rite of the Catholic Church of the Americas

29

Bless and approve our offerings; make it acceptable to you, an offering in spirit and in truth. Let it become for us the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, your only Son, our Lord. The priest joins his/her hands. The words of the Lord in the following should be spoken clearly and distinctly, as their meaning demands. The priest takes the bread and, raising it a little above the altar, continues:

On the day before he was to suffer, he took bread in his holy and venerable hands, and with eyes raised to heaven

The priest looks upward.

to you, O God, his almighty Father, giving you thanks, he said the blessing, broke the bread and gave it to his disciples, saying:

30

The priest bows slightly:

TAKE THIS, ALL OF YOU, AND EAT OF IT, FOR THIS IS MY BODY, WHICH WILL BE GIVEN UP FOR YOU.

The priest shows the consecrated host to the people, places it on the paten, and genuflects in adoration.

Then the priest continues.

The priest takes the chalice, and, raising it a little bit above the altar, continues:

In a similar way, when supper was ended he took this precious chalice in his holy and venerable hands, and once more giving you thanks, he said the blessing and gave the chalice to his disciples, saying:

The priest bows slightly:

31

TAKE THIS, ALL OF YOU, AND DRINK FROM IT, FOR THIS IS THE CHALICE OF MY BLOOD, THE BLOOD OF THE NEW AND ETERNAL COVENANT, WHICH WILL BE POURED OUT FOR YOU AND FOR MANY FOR THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS. DO THIS IN MEMORY OF ME.

The priest shows the chalice to the people, places it on the corporal, and genuflects in adoration.

V Let us proclaim the mystery of faith.

R We proclaim your Death, O Lord, and profess your Resurrection until you come again.

Then, with hands extended, the celebrant and concelebrants, say:

32

Therefore, O Lord, as we celebrate the memorial of the blessed Passion, the Resurrection from the dead, and the glorious Ascension into heaven of Christ, our Lord, we, your servants and your holy people, offer to your glorious majesty from the gifts that you have given us, this pure victim, this holy victim, this spotless victim, the holy Bread of eternal life and the Chalice of everlasting salvation. Be pleased to look upon these offerings with a serene and kindly countenance, and to accept them, as once you were pleased to accept the gifts of your servant Abel the just, the sacrifice of Abraham and Sarah, our parents in faith, and the offering of your high priest

33

Melchizedek, a holy sacrifice, a spotless victim. Bowing, with hands joined, the priest says:

In humble prayer, we ask you, almighty God: command that these gifts be borne by the hands of your holy Angel to your altar on high in the sight of your divine majesty, so that all of us, who through this participation at the altar receive the most holy Body and Blood of Jesus, may be filled with every grace and heavenly blessing. With hands extended, the priest alone says:

Remember also, Lord, your servants N. and N. who have gone before us with the sign of faith and rest in the sleep of peace.

34

Grant them, O Lord, we pray, and all who sleep in Christ, a place of refreshment, light and peace. The priest joins his/her hands in prayer. Then, with hands extended, the priest continues:

To us, also, your servants, who, though sinners, The priest strikes his/her breast with right hand:

to make all these good things, O Lord; you sanctify them, fill them with life, bless them, and bestow them upon us. Celebrant alone, or with the concelebrants. The priest takes the chalice and the paten with host and, lifting them up, sings or says:

Through Christ, with Christ, in Christ, O God, almighty Creator, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours, for ever and ever. R Amen

The priest sets down the chalice and paten and with hands joined, sings or says:

V At the Savior’s command and formed by divine teaching, we dare to say:

The priest extends his/her hands and continues with the people:

ALL:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Doxology

With hands extended, the priest continues alone:

V Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil, graciously grant peace in our days, that, by the help of your mercy, we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ.

Breaking of the Bread

ALL

Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, grant us peace.

This may be repeated until the breaking of the bread is finished, but the last phrase is always “Grant us peace.”

Meanwhile, the priest takes the host and breaks it over the paten. The priest places a small piece in the chalice, saying inaudibly.

39

V May this mingling of the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ bring eternal life to us who receive it.

The priest genuflects. Taking the host, the priest raises it slightly over the paten and, facing the people, says aloud:

V Behold the Lamb of God, behold the one who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb.

R Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.

Facing the altar, the priest says inaudibly:

V May the Body of Christ

bring me to everlasting life.

After this, the priest takes the paten or other vessel and goes to the communicants. He takes a host for each one, raising it a little, and shows it saying:
