Philippians 2:17-18

But even if I am being poured out like a drink offering on the sacrifice and service coming from your faith, I am glad and rejoice with all of you. 18So you too should be glad and rejoice with me. NIV

I. Drink Offering

Romans 15:15-16 – But on some points I have written to you very boldly by way of reminder, because of the grace given me by God

16to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles in the priestly service of the gospel of God, so that the offering of the Gentiles may be acceptable, sanctified by the Holy Spirit. ESV

II. The sacrifice and service coming from your faith

Romans 12:1 - And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him. NLT

O.T. Covenant – The priest offered the animal as a sacrifice.

N.T. Covenant – The priest offers himself as the sacrifice.

O.T. Covenant – Stones were needed to build a physical temple.

N.T. Covenant – The priests are the stones to build the spiritual temple.

1 Peter 2:5 - And you are living stones that God is building into his spiritual temple. What’s more, you are his holy priests. Through the mediation of Jesus Christ, you offer spiritual sacrifices that please God. NLT

III. How do the sacrifices of Paul and the Philippians relate?

Romans 15:16 - I am a special messenger from Christ Jesus to you Gentiles. I bring you the Good News so that I might present you as an acceptable offering to God, made holy by the Holy Spirit. NLT

Romans 11:13 – I am saying all this especially for you Gentiles. God has appointed me as the apostle to the Gentiles. … NLT

New believers as new Saints

Saints as ministering Priests

Multiplication

These new priests responded by growing in faith and

sharing that faith so that more nonbelievers could become

Priests.

IV. I am glad and rejoice with all of you. 18So you too should be glad and rejoice with me. NIV

Luke 15:4-6 - “If a man has a hundred sheep and one of them gets lost, what will he do? Won’t he leave the ninety-nine others in the wilderness and go to search for the one that is lost until he finds it?

5And when he has found it, he will joyfully carry it home on his shoulders. When he arrives, he will call together his friends and neighbors, saying, ‘Rejoice with me because I have found my lost sheep.’ NLT

Acts 5:40-41 - … They called in the apostles and had them flogged. Then they ordered them never again to speak in the name of Jesus, and they let them go.

41The apostles left the high council rejoicing that God had counted them worthy to suffer disgrace for the name of Jesus. NLT

Romans 14:7-8 - For we don’t live for ourselves or die for ourselves. 8If we live, it’s to honor the Lord. And if we die, it’s to honor the Lord. So whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord. NLT

Revelation 8:3-4 - Then another angel with a gold incense burner came and stood at the altar. And a great amount of incense was given to him to mix with the prayers of God’s people as an offering on the gold altar before the throne.

4The smoke of the incense, mixed with the prayers of God’s holy people, ascended up to God from the altar where the angel had poured them out. NLT

Hebrews 13:15 - Therefore, let us offer through Jesus a continual sacrifice of praise to God, proclaiming our allegiance to his name. NLT

V. Meditation and Application

Jesus wants priests following Him regardless of what

happens.

Are you willing to make the sacrifice?

God’s priests are not priests of perfection but models of

those being perfected.

The foundation of our unwillingness to admit our

needs and confess our sins is

PRIDE

A hypocrite is not one who doesn’t sin but rather one

who promotes a given lifestyle and is not growing in

that lifestyle.

What about when I sin?

Confess your sin and turn your eyes back on Jesus.

Hebrews 12:1-2 - Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up.

And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. 2We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. … NLT

Fearing people may find out who you really are.

In your vulnerability and weakness you are strong.

2 Cor 12:10 – That’s why I take pleasure in my weaknesses, and in the insults, hardships, persecutions, and troubles that I suffer for Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong. NLT

1 Corinthians 11:1 - And you should imitate me, just as I imitate Christ. NLT
