From the Pastor’s Desk...
Today’s Gospel from St. Luke uses the person and character of Peter to describe how God calls individuals to do great things. All through scripture God chooses unlikely individuals whose first reaction is their own unworthiness and unsuitability for the task at hand. Peter discovers that, when he chose to accept the invitation of Jesus to become a “fisher of men,” God’s grace brought enormous changes to his life, because grace is permitted to work.
This theme is common in scripture – “a great reversal,” it is called. God invites unlikely people to a complete change of life, or to commit to an important role. Mary wondered out loud how God’s plan, as announced by Gabriel, could possibly come true. Paul, a Roman citizen and Jewish scholar, is totally transformed from a hater of Christian faith to its most ardent preacher. Remember that Moses in the Old Testament is a murderer with a past and a stutter. David was one of many sons of his father, a mere shepherd with some excitable tendencies. Isaiah says he is “unworthy” – he becomes Israel’s greatest prophet.
Each one of these individuals was dramatically changed through an encounter with God. We don’t know why Jesus chose Peter and his boat to teach the crowds by the lakeside. But Peter followed Jesus’ command to lower the nets, and it made all the difference. Jesus determined that Peter was worthy and ideally suited to the task at hand.
An encounter with God’s grace can change people. Scripture attests to that fact. We all may consider ourselves “unlikely disciples” – ill-suited for that purpose and unworthy in the eyes of many. But God working through us – grace – can drive us to become all God intended us to be. We must simply do what Peter did. He allowed Jesus to take charge of his boat.
Have a Good Week!
Fr. Bill Arnold

Additional Information for Holy Spirit
Holy Spirit Catholic School’s Week was shortened this year due to the inclement weather Ohio received. Our Special Person’s Day and Art Show was on Wednesday and a success! We
had over four hundred guests and students participate! We also had our Parent/Teacher Conferences this week as the second quarter ended last month. Our eighth grade students are busily preparing for the Science Fair, which will be held on February 21st. Thank you for your continued support and prayers!
Amy Chessler, Principal
Your Help is Needed! Our St. Vincent de Paul Society food pantry receives many requests for basic hygiene products and toiletries, e.g. toilet paper, toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, soap, and shampoo. If you are able, pick up an extra item or two when you are doing your own shopping. There is a box at the back of the church for your donations. Your generosity to this important ministry is always very much appreciated.
Shared Parish Information
New Bishop for the Diocese of Columbus: It was announced this past Thursday that Pope Francis has appointed the Most Rev. Robert J. Brennan, Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Rockville Center, New York, as the 12th Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Columbus.
In so doing, Pope Francis accepted the resignation of the Most Rev. Frederick Campbell. As required by Canon Law, bishops are requested to submit their resignation to the Pope on reaching age 75. As such, Bishop Campbell submitted his letter of resignation last August on the occasion of his 75th Birthday.
Bishop Robert Brennan will be formally installed as the new bishop of our Diocese in a ceremony/Mass scheduled for Friday, March 29, 2019, at St. Joseph Cathedral. The parishioners of St. Philip/Holy Spirit Parishes welcome our new bishop and pray for his success as Shepherd of the Columbus Diocese.
The following link is to a video greeting from Bishop Robert Brennan to the people of the Diocese of Columbus: https://youtu.be/KvNbzw0iPao. An interview of Bishop Brennan produced by the Catholic Faith Network can be viewed at https://youtu.be/mw6l0BJlzHA.

This 10-part study offers “pearls for wise living” by applying the wisdom of James to our present day. Classes will take place on Sunday evenings in the Holy Spirit Parish Offi ce. The study began on Sunday, January 27 and ends on Sunday, April 7, 2019. Please e-mail [email protected] for more information.
