11th Sunday after Pentecost The Rev. Paula E. Roulette, Pastor
Cell #: 716-474-7556; Email: [email protected]
Welcome to CAR CHURCH! • “Car Ushers” (wearing masks, gloves, and safety vests) will greet you at the “church
entrance” on Genesee Street. You will receive bulletins for the number of people in
your car.
• Cars with multiple occupants must have an empty space on each side; cars with single
occupants can be parked next to each other. In each case, physical distancing of a
minimum of 6 feet will be maintained.
• Attendees may bring a lawn chair and sit outside of their cars, physically distanced
from occupants of other cars. Masks must be worn. Attendees may remain in cars for
worship; masks are not required.
• Due to being in a public parking lot, there can be no car horn honking.
• At the conclusion of the service, you will have an opportunity to give an offering as a
response to God as you exit. “Car Ushers” will direct you to exit out of the parking lot
onto Kane Avenue in an orderly fashion.
• If, by chance, a fire emergency happens during our 30-40 minute worship service, the
service will stop. The “Car Ushers” will direct cars in exiting.
• A special thank you to Fire Chief Pete Buehler and the Skaneateles Fire Department for
the use of their parking lot and to Tom Long of Rt. 20 Electric for providing the
technology for our service!
Thank you for your patience and understanding as glitches may occur during the service.
Please join us next Sunday!
Parking spaces are limited, so please CALL, or EMAIL, Pastor Paula with your reservation by Thursday.

In Isaiah we hear that God’s house shall be a house of prayer for all people and that God will gather the outcasts of Israel.
The Canaanite woman in today’s gospel is a Gentile, an outsider, who is unflinching in her request that Jesus heal her
daughter. As Jesus commends her bold faith, how might our church extend its mission to those on the margins of society? In
our gathering around word and meal we receive strength to be signs of comfort, healing, and justice for those in need.
GOD GATHERS US Prelude
Announcements
Confession and Forgiveness All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins.
Blessed be the holy Trinity, ☩ one God, whose steadfast love is everlasting, whose faithfulness
endures from generation to generation.
Amen.
Trusting in the mercy of God, let us confess our sin.
Silence is kept for reflection.
Reconciling God,
we confess that we do not trust your abundance, and we deny your presence in our lives.
We place our hope in ourselves and rely on our own efforts. We fail to believe that you
provide enough for all. We abuse your good creation for our own benefit. We fear
difference and do not welcome others as you have welcomed us. We sin in thought,
word, and deed. By your grace, forgive us; through your love, renew us; and in your
Spirit, lead us; so that we may live and serve you in newness of life. Amen.
Beloved of God, by the radical abundance of divine mercy we have peace with God through ☩
Christ Jesus, through whom we have obtained grace upon grace. Our sins are forgiven. Let us
live now in hope. For hope does not disappoint, because God’s love has been poured into our
hearts through the Holy Spirit.
Amen.

Gathering Hymn Praise to the Lord, the Almighty verses 1 and 4
Greeting
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be
with you all.
And also with you.

Prayer of the Day Let us pray. God of all peoples, your arms reach out to embrace all those who call upon you.
Teach us as disciples of your Son to love the world with compassion and constancy, that your
name may be known throughout the earth, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.
GOD SPEAKS to US
First Reading: Isaiah 56:1, 6-8 The prophet calls upon Israel to do justice in view of God’s imminent intervention to save. Righteousness and obedience
define who belongs to the Israelite community—not race, nationality, or any other category.
1Thus says the LORD: Maintain justice, and do what is right, for soon my salvation will come,
and my deliverance be revealed.
6And the foreigners who join themselves to the LORD, to minister to him, to love the name of
the LORD, and to be his servants, all who keep the sabbath, and do not profane it, and hold fast
my covenant—
7these I will bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer; their
burnt offerings and their sacrifices will be accepted on my altar; for my house shall be called a
house of prayer for all peoples.
8Thus says the Lord GOD, who gathers the outcasts of Israel, I will gather others to them
besides those already gathered.
The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God!
Psalm 67 (read together in unison)
1May God be merciful to us and bless us; may the light of God’s face shine upon us.
2Let your way be known upon earth, your saving health among all nations.
3Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you.
4Let the nations be glad and sing for joy, for you judge the peoples with equity and
guide all the nations on earth.
5Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you.
6The earth has brought forth its increase; God, our own God, has blessed us.
7May God give us blessing, and may all the ends of the earth stand in awe.
The Gospel: Matthew 15:21-28
The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the 15th chapter. Glory to you, O Lord. Jesus teaches his disciples that true purity is a matter of the heart rather than outward religious observances. Almost
immediately, this teaching is tested when a woman considered to be a religious outsider approaches him for help.
21Jesus left that place and went away to the district of Tyre and Sidon. 22Just then a Canaanite
woman from that region came out and started shouting, “Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of
David; my daughter is tormented by a demon.” 23But he did not answer her at all. And his
5
disciples came and urged him, saying, “Send her away, for she keeps shouting after us.” 24He
answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” 25But she came and knelt
before him, saying, “Lord, help me.” 26He answered, “It is not fair to take the children’s food
and throw it to the dogs.” 27She said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall
from their masters’ table.” 28Then Jesus answered her, “Woman, great is your faith! Let it be
done for you as you wish.” And her daughter was healed instantly.
This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.

Apostles’ Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was
buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into
heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living
and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the
forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
Prayers of Intercession Confident of your care and helped by the Holy Spirit, we pray for the church, the world, and all
who are in need. A brief silence.
Lord, you gather the church to be part of your mission as ambassadors of Jesus Christ. As Jesus
acknowledged the great faith of a woman from outside his people, help your church discover
and find blessing in the faith of people we might reject. On this day we especially pray for
Lutheran World Relief, Presiding Bishop Eaton and the ELCA, Bishop John Macholz and the
Upstate NY Synod, our companion synods in Zimbabwe and Zambia, and Pastor Anita Mohr
and Our Saviour Lutheran Church in Utica. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.
You have blessed us with the bounty of the earth. Grant your grace to all your creatures, that
the earth will flourish. Relieve waters choked by garbage, renew soils stripped of nutrients, and
refresh the air all creatures need to live. We pray especially for the continued health of our
beloved Finger Lakes. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.
You call the nations to be glad and sing for joy. Let your way be known among all the nations
of the world, now divided by competing interests, contending alliances, and consumed by
enormous worry, especially as the impact of the pandemic has spread into the operation of our
schools and our workplaces. Bless us and make your face shine upon all. Lord, in your mercy,
hear our prayer.
You show unexpected mercy, kindness, and generosity. We pray for those who do not have
enough, for outcasts in our villages, cities, and town, and for those who need your healing,
especially all those suffering from COVID-19, all those named on our prayer list, along with all
those we name either on our lips or in our hearts. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.
7
In you we live and move and have our being. Grant our congregation of Holy Trinity the grace
to find our life refreshed in you. Accompany us in the rhythms of late summer. Give us rest and
renewal, and strengthen us for mission in your name. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.
Here other intercessions may be offered.
Your eternal promises are more than we could ever imagine. As you gather all the saints, join
us also with them on the great day of your salvation. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.
In the certain hope that nothing can separate us from your love, we offer these prayers to you;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Thanksgiving for the Word Let us pray. O God of justice and love, we give thanks to you that you illumine our way through
life with the words of your Son. Give us the light we need, awaken us to the needs of others,
and at the end bring all the world to your feast; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, to
whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory forever. Amen.
Lord’s Prayer Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be
done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our
trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever
and ever. Amen.
GOD SENDS US
Blessing May the Lord bless you and keep you. May the Lord make his face shine upon you with grace
and mercy. May the Lord look upon you with favor and ☩ give you peace. Amen.
