Message from the Board President and Chief Executive Officer

As an organization we are working on being accredited and look forward to working with Accreditation Canada this winter for the review.

Our strategic plan was renewed this past year and will guide us over the next three years. With this revision we saw the closure of Elm Street Place and the end of Art in Bloom, our signature fundraiser.

Our partnerships continue to grow and have more purpose and outcomes in the area of service delivery. This is evident in the work we are doing with Health Sciences North (HSN), Northern Initiatives for Social Action (NISA) and the Canadian Mental Health Association’s (CMHA’s) in Ontario. We are also working with other community partners to look at the need for a shared service space. This is an exciting project that is really looking at collaboration across many sectors.

CMHA’s across Canada have updated their branding after many years; we now have a new and improved logo and website.

Residential services continue to expand to meet the needs of our community however, as we know there still never seems to be enough housing. New staff have been hired to work in all of the programs and all their hard work is appreciated.

We value our employees, the individuals with lived experience, their families and their caregivers. You are the real champions in our community!

Debra DawePresident, Board of Directors

Marion QuigleyChief Executive Officer

Volunteering or working in health care brings us all many benefits. This past year the agency and the Board have worked well together to ensure services and supports are accessible and meet the individual’s needs within the communities we service.

As a Board we have worked hard to build a strong team and work within our governance framework.

We ask ourselves often:• Why are we here? • Do we make a difference? • Are we working as part of the larger mental health and addictions

system?• Are we transparent and open to the community?• Do our partners see us as valuable partners?• Can we improve what we do as an organization and how we do our work?• Tell us what you think?

News and Events

CMHA-S/M continues to participate in Accreditation Canada’s Qmentum accreditation program in which our organization has been evaluating and improving our performance based on national standards of excellence in the following areas:

• Leadership• Community-Based Mental Health• Governance• Infection Prevention and Control

As we approach our on-site survey date of February 2014, it is important to reflect on some of the highlights, accomplishments and next steps of this accreditation process. Over the past year and half, CMHA-S/M has been awarded an Accreditation Primer Award indicating that our organization has a good quality foundation in place. Additionally, we have conducted and completed a self-assessment process in which a series of questionnaires were administered to staff, managers and board members as a way of evaluating our current performance. The results of these surveys highlighted several organizational strengths including:

• Supportive leadership• Respectful and safe work environment• Ethical decision making• Learning Culture• Effective board functioning

We will continue to devote time and resources to carry out action plans that build on our strengths and address areas such as client safety and infection control.

The accreditation process has given us an opportunity to reflect on what we do well, celebrate those successes and ensure that we remain true to our mission of continually improving community based mental health supports to facilitate the well-being of all people.

Student Placements: A Welcomed Opportunity for All Involved By: Melanie Lefebvre - Rehabilitation Practitioner

At CMHA-S/M, we have a culture that embraces learning. We are regularly exposed to training opportunities to enhance our skill sets — be it learning from the internationally renowned mental health guru, Pat Deegan, or from a local psychiatrist lending their expertise. It is only natural, then, that we have agreements with College Boreal, Cambrian College, and Laurentian University for student placement opportunities, most commonly in social services and social work programs, each year.

Students are sometimes initially intimidated by the interview process and our maze of an office, with a common remark being, “the hallway continues?!” But future students do not fret, we take pride in our culture of positivity and inclusion (plus we’ll be sure to guide you through our maze of a hallway).

Once part of the CMHA-S/M team, students are linked with a supervisor who will closely follow them throughout their placement experience with opportunities ranging from co-facilitating workshops to taking the lead during one-on-one sessions. Weekly supervisions and daily journaling helps students reflect on their learning and obtain steady guidance from their supervisor. Often times there can be up to three students at once, creating a cushion of support for one another. Individuals with lived experience of mental illness who have felt comfortable with a student’s presence have shared that it is rewarding to be contributing to their education.

But we don’t stop there. We also offer short-term placement opportunities for students from the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM). Some people with lived experience have come forward to share their recovery stories with the future doctors recognizing the unique opportunity to impact their learning.

Let the learning (and maze navigation) continue!

Crisis System NavigatorThe Crisis System Navigator was developed to assist individuals with lived experience and their families to access crisis services. The Navigator provides rehabilitation and comprehensive personal support to individuals. The Navigator will assist with the diversion of individuals from the Emergency Department (ED). The Navigator will also assist those who are using the ED and crisis service to attend services in their location of choice (CMHA, HSN Ramsey Lake location or Cedar Street). Staff will assist the client in assessing their readiness for change in any of the four recognized rehabilitation environments: living, learning, working and/or social.

Since the implementation of the position, CMHA staff and HSN have worked hard to develop a strong partnership to enhance the support provided to individuals.

This is a pilot project that will be reviewed in March 2014.

Partnership WorkBy: Karyn Mathewson - Manager of Clinical Services

Developing and maintaining partnerships is an important part to the success of our programs. We value collaboration and look to work with other agencies to assist in supporting those we work with. Partnerships help to address system needs. Working together we find solutions that ultimately make the lives of citizens more fulfilling and meaningful. This past year we have developed partnerships with the Greater City of Sudbury Police Services, Children’s Aid Society of the Districts of Sudbury and Manitoulin, IRIS Addiction Services, Northern Initiative for Social Action, and Shkagamik-Kwe Health Centre. Moving ahead, we will be looking to further our partnerships and ensure that they are working to the fullest capacity. We will also look to develop more partnerships with the Addiction & Mental Health and Youth Justice sector.

NOAH SPACEBy: Christine Lafortune - Rehabilitation Practitioner

Christine has been working out of the NOAH SPACE office every Wednesday. At this time, NOAH SPACE currently has 38 partnered agencies. Some of the agencies include Children’s Aid Society (CAS), Greater Sudbury Police Services (GSPS), Sudbury and District Health Unit (SDHU), Reseau Access Network, Rockhaven, Northern Initiative for Social Action (NISA), etc. The benefit of being present at NOAH SPACE not only provides community members’ fast access to mental health support, but to service providers as well. For example, last week two police officers requested her assistance to help a community member who was in distress and known to have mental health issues (former individual who accessed CMHA services - Justice). She also attended weekly tactical meetings with the Police, Sudbury Housing, and CAS where information is provided to those on a need-to-know basis so that support can be given to those accessing services and referrals are then made. Christine also sits on the Advisory Committee which provides guidance and support to the Coordinator of NOAH SPACE.

Police TrainingBy: Sarah Gauthier, Justice Program Coordinator

As part of a Community Steering Committee established to assist with the move of the Crisis Intervention Services out of the hospital and into the community it was identified that mental health training for front line police officers would assist in the success of the program. As police respond to an increasing number of calls for people experiencing mental health issues further training in this area was welcomed by the Greater Sudbury Police Service. The Canadian Mental Health Association worked collaboratively with Health Sciences North and the Greater Sudbury Police Services to develop a training curriculum that would assist officers in recognizing and identifying mental health issues and tips and strategies on how to respond. The training also focused on awareness of what a person experiences by showing them another side to mental illness that they may not often get to see. This was accomplished by incorporating several video testimonials, an interactive role-play, as well a simulated psychosis exercise. Through the use of iPods officers experienced simulated auditory hallucinations and were asked to perform daily tasks in order to increase their awareness and put themselves in someone else’s shoes. A booklet was also developed for officers to take with them while on the road as a quick reference of mental health issues and legislation as well as community resources and emergency phone numbers. Between the months of October and December 2012 approximately 300 Greater Sudbury Police Officers received the training as well as several 911 communications staff. The feedback received was very positive and validated the need for this training. Overall, if officers can better recognize and understand what a person may be experiencing, it can assist them in making decisions on how to respond, where to go for help, and how to keep everyone safe.

The Rent Supplement Program is a provincially funded program designed to assist individuals’ access to safe, affordable, secure housing. This program has been in existence at our branch since 2002 and can boast an excess of over 55 partnership agreements with various landlords in Greater Sudbury, Espanola, Little Current and Chapleau.

Here at our branch, we pride ourselves on the successes we see through the Rent Supplement program. This year 130 individuals were and remained housed. Our evaluations demonstrate that our outcomes are largely dependent on the strong and productive partnerships developed through the years between landlords and CMHA as well as our ability to work together to assist individuals’ access and maintain housing.

Such partnerships between CMHA and landlords provide a number of benefits which include a “win –win” situation for both the tenant and the landlord; individuals are housed, supported and connected to an array of social services and the landlord is supported through training, advocacy, and connection with CMHA’s Property Coordinator along with the reassurance that the rent will be paid. Because of their experience in the Rent Supplement Program, landlords believe and trust in the integrity of the program that supports and fosters a mutually respectful relationship between the tenant and landlord.

The partnership between the landlord and the CMHA Rent Supplement Program is so successful that many landlords approach CMHA to recruit prospective tenants for their available units. As one landlord states; “At least when I am working with CMHA I know there is always someone I can go to for support and problem solving in the event problems or issues arise with the tenant”.

CMHA and IRIS addiction treatment have also partnered to provide rent supplement for ten individuals who are considered high users of the addiction system. This program is also working well.

‘Win Win’ Partnerships By Lynne Annett

In partnership with North Bay Regional Health Centre (NBRHC), Northern Initiative for Social Action (NISA) and Health Sciences North (HSN), we formed a committee to plan an eight bed Recovery Home.

The home was purchased in August 2012 and renovated. It is scheduled to open in the Spring 2013. This eight bed home will provide permanent housing to eight people who have been living in hospital and are ready to return to the community to live with friends and family. The residents in the home will be supported by Peer Support Workers through NISA.

We look forward to this enhanced housing service.

Psychosocial Rehabilitation (PSR)- Rehab Trainer RoleBy: Krysten Ranger and Jenny Clattenburg

Psychosocial Rehabilitation embraces opportunities for ongoing, continued growth and development. At CMHA Sudbury-Manitoulin all staff members are viewed as leaders in their own way. We all have strengths, unique qualities, and passions that contribute to the overall culture of our PSR-minded agency. One opportunity for staff to exercise their knowledge of PSR is through a leadership role as a Rehabilitation Trainer.

Rehabilitation Trainers facilitate and assist peers in learning and implementing tools of Psychosocial Rehabilitation. Rehabilitation Trainers facilitate monthly opportunities within small groups called “Communities of Practice.” Communities of Practice are extended opportunities to move learning into action where staff can share experiences, practice skills, and build on professional development.

One of the benefits of attending Communities of Practice is to have the added exposure to learning opportunities. It is through these opportunities that we are actively working on strengthening our daily practices. This in turn assists with embedding the PSR approach within our agency.

From Playful Props to Community Connection: The 2012 Psychosocial Rehabilitation Canada Annual ConferenceBy: Jenny Clattenburg and Melanie Lefebvre

Bright purple wig? Check. Bubble blowing kit? Check. Slinky? Check. These items are just the tip of the iceberg of some of the props that Jenny Clattenburg and Melanie Lefebvre brought to the Psychosocial Rehabilitation Conference in Vancouver, British Columbia in September, 2012 for their presentation, Anything, Anytime, Anywhere.

Melanie and Jenny were honoured to have the opportunity to share with the PSR community how wellness can be found with, well, anything and, staying true to the title: anytime and anywhere. Jenny and Melanie engaged their workshop participants with a scavenger hunt of wellness tools scattered amongst the room, with the direction to choose items that they were drawn to with the bonus of recognizing a connection to their wellness.

Kindred spirits from across Canada are united during this 3-day annual conference in order to hone skills and celebrate the practice of PSR.

You too can be exposed to elements of the PSR conference experience. Since their return, Jenny and Melanie have been encouraging people to channel their own inner Katy Perry and say yes to wellness.

Sudbury/Manitoulin on Iris and the Pregnancy Project.By: Jeanne Messina, SSW, CPRP, Rehab Practitioner

I sit on the Professional Resource Committee (PRC) with the Iris Addiction Recovery for Women Pregnancy/Parenting Outreach Program (PPOP).

The Pregnancy/Parenting Outreach Program (PPOP) is an outreach service offered by Iris Addiction Recovery for Women and is designed to support women sixteen years and older who are pregnant or parenting children age six or younger, who may or may not be in their care, in the district of Sudbury/Manitoulin.

PPOP is a harm reduction program that can support women to reach and maintain their goal of cutting down on their use of substances or abstaining from drugs and/or alcohol use entirely. The program goal is to provide the women they serve with the necessary tools, support, advocacy, guidance, and encouragement.

The committee meets bi-weekly and as a committee member I have been positively impacted by the work the PPOP’s staff provide as well as the support given by the committee members. Agencies work together to help the women transform their lives, improve their coping and parenting skills, attitudes and behaviour, and empower them to make healthier choices.

Victoria Street - A New BeginningBy: Nicole King, Residential Coordinator

As Victoria Street completes its second year in operation, I reflect on the profound impact this program and support has provided for individuals that have been fortunate to reside and demonstrate their growth, empowerment and recovery.

When individuals move into the home, I always share with them that it is their time to focus on their self; move towards the next steps in their recovery, and empower them to connect with supports within the program and our community partners. It is their time to “shine” and work towards further wellness.I wanted to share this impactful poem to reflect and share an understanding of the journey of individuals in their time with the Victoria Street Program and how the program continues to promote hope for the intrinsic individuals that we are so fortunate to assist.

New Beginnings by Gertrude B. McClain

It's only the beginning now...a pathway yet unknownAt times the sound of other steps...sometimes we walk alone

The best beginnings of our livesMay sometimes end in sorrowBut even on our darkest daysThe sun will shine tomorrow.

The years will never take awayOur chance to start anewIt's only the beginning nowSo dreams can still come true.

So we must do our very bestWhatever life may bringAnd look beyond the winter chillTo smell the breath of spring.

Into each life will always comeA time to start anewA new beginning for each heartAs fresh as morning dew.

Although the cares of life are greatAnd hands are bowed so lowThe storms of life will leave behindThe wonder of a rainbow.

Black Dog: 4 Vs The WorldBy: Liz Puddy

What a strange name for a play some of us thought when we were approached by the Sudbury Theatre Centre to help support youth during and after the play. After seeing the play some of us thought, WOW what a hard hitting and fantastic play. Black Dog: 4 vs the World is a vivid, engaging play that portrays the issue of teen mental health in the Sudbury community. It features four teens, each with different mental health issues, through times of ups and downs of a challenging school year that begins with a suicide and ends with a great sense of hope.

As the Youth Mental Health Court worker, I felt this play was able to connect with the issues youth in our community are facing. Some of these issues include: self–medicating with drugs and alcohol to cope, stigma, suicide, symptoms of mental health, taking medication and feeling alone or isolated. Every time I watched the play I was able to get more and more from it. I was excited that youth from various schools were invited and able to see the play. It not only taught youth about the issues I listed above, it also helped youth see that there is hope for their futures and that it is OK to ask for HELP.

CMHA-S/M was asked to provide support to those viewing the play and take part in the question period after the play. Staff were able to provide assistance to a few who needed supports during and after. Staff also had the opportunity to listen to youth ask questions about mental health, addictions and stigma and hear how the play affected them. The results were outstanding and the play was a success. I, for one, am honoured to have been part of something that was ground breaking and amazing.

I would like to thank the Sudbury Theatre Center, Judi Straughan (Director), Matthew Heiti (Playwright), the AMAZING actors/actresses, Gregory Tremblay (Videographer) and all others involved in the play. Without you the play would not have been such a success and because of you the play will be returning next year for another round of shows. If you did not get the chance to see this play I highly recommend you do, not just to better understand the issues facing youth in our community but to learn how you can possibly help.

Mental Health First Aid Training - 99 Trained!By Shirley Gilpin

In May of 2012 I had the opportunity to attend a five-day Mental Health First Aid Canada Instructor Training course, at the Mental Health Commission of Canada office in Ottawa, Ontario. Since completing the training we have promoted the program by; facilitating an interactive presentation at the CMHA Annual General Meeting in September, 2012; completing a live CTV news interview in August, 2012; and sending out flyers by email to a variety of individuals. There has proven to be an overwhelming interest in the Mental Health First Aid Canada program, by a variety of individuals, businesses, healthcare providers and community agencies in our community. I began facilitating the training in November, 2012. Since then there have been seven training sessions conducted and 99 individuals trained in total. We have scheduled quarterly sessions for the community and will continue to attend agencies to provide training to their staff, onsite. I look forward to training many more future Mental Health First Aiders!

A CMHA Special Event: A Sister’s CallOn Monday, March 18th the Canadian Mental Health Association – Sudbury/Manitoulin (CMHA) and the North East LHIN (NELHIN) presented a special screening of the documentary, A Sister’s Call, at the Rainbow Cinema. The documentary A Sister’s Call explores how and why a loved one can disappear into a twenty year abyss of homelessness. Afterwards, the audience was invited to participate in a discussion, moderated by Anchor/Reporter Kari Vierimaa of CTV.

This event was very well attended and the feedback from the audience was positive. Over 90% of those present stated that their knowledge of mental health was increased and they now had a better understanding of mental health and mental illness.

The screening of the film kicked off the North East LHIN’s Mental Health and Substance Abuse Forum – Creating Healthy, Resilient and Inclusive Communities, which featured more than 20 speakers from across the North on March 19th.

Since 1998, our agency has been fortunate enough to have a partner like Gloria’s Restaurant, who each year dedicates a day to hosting our Mental Health Fundraiser Breakfast. The success of this initiative grows with each new year, and this one was no exception. A whopping $7,413 was raised for our agency by Gloria’s patrons who ate in support of a healthy community. A special thanks goes out to Gloria’s and its patrons! Looking forward to next year!
