THE OCCASION

Orlan Landreth, coach of Poly football teams from 1926 to date, isbeing honored today as he sends his players against Alhambra HighSchool. This is Coach Landreth's seventh year as varsity coach, havingserved three years as mentor ol the Poly Class B elevensbefore assuming his present possition. In making this "Landreth Day",the school, his former players, and other alumni are taking this oppor-tunity to honor him. A brie! review of his accomplishments, year byyeaL, are herervith noted.

192d-ln his first season as class B coach at Poly, Landreth dida bit of experimenting, using "Pop" Warner's single and double wingbackformations as q'ell as some of Knute Rockne's system. Captain Clair"Chubby" Crane's line smashing rr.'as mainly responsible for league winsover Santa Ana, Glendale and south Pasadena and a win overManual Arts.

1927-Poly's middlerveights swept through i \oth Coast Leagueand Southern California champlonships with a reuord of ten victoriesin twelve games. Landreth concentrated on Warner formations an{ thesewere successful rvith "Babe" Fraser's line plunging and Captain RandyLouis. open field running doing the heavy scoring. Behind a great line,Clifr Edmundson. Bob Parire, "Mustv" Olson and Vic Iav tikewlseshown in the backfield

1928-Landreth's ability as a coach was again proven when thePoly Class B team won nine straiglht games and rolled up 232 points tothe opoonents' 12 before losing to Santa Monica in a post season game,All Coast League oDponents. fell before the Landreth running attackheaded by Captnin Fraser, Parke. Olson and Russ Sweet.

1929-Poly com-oleted an undcafeated season, winning the CoastLeagrre and Southern California chamnionships in Landreth's first scasona.s \.arsity coach. Employinq thc Warner sinqle winqback formationentirely and utilizing the abilitv of Captain Norm Franklin, Sweet, Olson,Parke, Story, Davies and mates, Landreth produced one of the qreatestof all Poly teams ro defeat Ccronado, Huntington park and SantaBarbara in the plavoffs.

1930--With manv of his lettermen returning, Landreth aqain wonfor Poly the Coa.jt f-eacue and Southern California titles. With CaptainSweet, Story, Bradlev and Franklin continuinq the backfield p".formancesstarted in 1929, a fine line headed by Bob Carlton, Glenn Taytor,I)uane Taylor and Barr Smith carried on despite the loss of Howe,Tarrv, Pitts, Vance, Wilcox, Fuhrer and Elliott at the end of 1929,

1931-With the loss throuqh graduation of nearlv all the membersof the 1929 and 1930 championship teams, Landreih was forced tobuild a nelr/ team. Crnlaip Halbert "Abe" Martinson shared honorsduring the year with Culp, Munch, Knox, Hallen, peterson and |ordan. The most irnpoltant viin of tbe vear was the 18 to 6 triumph overPasadena which gave Poly the edge in the rivalry.

1932-Discarding the Wamer football system for that of Rockne,Landreth put a team on the gridiron which though handicapped bysize, tied Santa A.na, the league championsr defeated Manual Arts andSan Diego, and tied Hollywood, Bakersfield and Wilson Hiqh in thefirst intra.city game. Captairr Hugh Williams, Dick parker, DickJuratsch and fohn Takahashi .sparkled during the year.

1933-Using a combination shift with the Notre Dame systern,Poly seemed headed for another Coast League Championship

- by

Winning its first six games. Compton, Hollywood and Manual Artsio praciice games, Gle;dale and Alhambra in league encounters

- and

Wilion in the intra-city game had all been beaten when the JackrabbitsIost a heart breaker to San Diego, 19 to 12- A loss by one touchdownto Bakersfield, a Pasadena tie, and a 7'6 loss to Santa Ana ended the

season. Bob Barton. nephew of Guy Barton, Poly's captain in 19ll'led the teanr along with Vernon Moore, ]uratsch, Parker' Cain, McCovran.Gaffney and Berryman.

193'1-Another Southern California championship team! After trim'ming Wilson High and Santa Barbara, Poll defeated every Coast

L"ugu" opponent and then won the playofi games with Loyola, Cath-edra'i and'Chufi"y Union for the title. A loss ln the first practice game

of the season served as a helpful tonic, for the team with co-captainsBob Gafinev and Dick Berryman then vron ten straight games' 'Walt

McCowan, brilliant ball carrier, had star teammates including DennlsScott, Morry Cain, Vic Elliott, Evert Howard and Bruce Wilcox inaddition to the co-captails.

1935-Another fine team with an undefeated record of six straightwlns meets a strong Alhambra team today. Using the Rockne systemwith a small amount of 'Warner's, Landreth's team has bowled overconsecutively Santa Barbara, 'Wilson, Fresno' Santa Ana, Loyola andGlendale. iaptuin Evert Hos'ard leads the Jackrabbits this year wlthBob Berryman and other Teammates plaving a tYPe of ball that isreDresentative of a Landreth coached team.
