PSHCE Focus-To reflect on my aims and ambitions for the new year In the morning, you thought about the importance of a new year and how some people use this as a time to reflect on the year that has just ended and make a promise or resolution for the year ahead. Think about what you would like to achieve this year in 2021. There may be something you would like to focus on in school e.g. to improve handwriting or it could be something to help others e.g. to help more in the house, keep my bedroom tidy etc. Use the sheet in the resources section below to help you reflect on this year and think about some possible resolutions for this year.

    Year 3

    Monday 4th January English

Focus-To be able to show understanding of a text. Read the text in the resources section below which focuses on the history and traditions surrounding New Year’s Day and how the new year is celebrated in different countries. Discuss the text with an adult and reflect on how you may have celebrated the new year this year and in previous years. When you have read the text, have a go at answering the questions. The answers are provided too for the adult to help you check your learning.

Maths Focus-To practise my times tables In Year 3 we have been working hard on our times tables. Please choose a times table to practise with an adult. The Year 3 focus times tables are the 3, 4 and 8 times tables and we also revise the 2, 5 and 10 times table. In the resources section below are some activities which may help you to practise your times tables skills. Have a go at as many as you wish. Try to focus on how quickly and accurately you can recall your multiplication and division facts.

  • Tuesday 5th January English

Focus-To be able to recount an event. Talk to an adult about your favourite day of the Christmas holidays. Why was it your favourite day? What made it so memorable? Today, you are going to write a diary account of that day describing what happened and how you felt. Remember that in a diary, we include the 5 Ws: What happened? When? Who were you with? Why? Where were you? We also try to include as much detail as possible to make it interesting to the reader. Write a diary account of your favourite day of the holiday (it may even be Christmas Day). Maybe you could include a picture of your day too.

Maths Focus-To use my times tables knowledge to solve problems. Begin the lesson today by practicing your times tables. Maybe you could play a game to help you practise them or ask an adult to ask you some questions and see how quickly you could solve them. When you are ready, have a go at using your times tables knowledge to help you solve the word problems on the sheet in the resources sections. Remember to use any strategies we have learnt in school to help you.

Art Focus-To create a piece of artwork linked to New Year’s Day.

    Wednesday 6th January

English Focus-To be able to use descriptive vocabulary. This week we have been focusing on New Years and what we did over the winter break. For the rest of the week we are going to create our own story linked to New Years. Today, you are going to look at a picture and describe it.

Maths Focus- To know my 8 times tables Children watch video https://vimeo.com/480761211 Remind children that the numbers can be switched around and they will still have the same answer e.g. 2 x 8 = 16 and 8 x 2 = 16. Encourage children to look for other links between numbers, specifically the 4 times table. Children to complete worksheet found in the resources section.

Geography Focus- To locate cities in the UK on a map.

Today we will be looking at cities in the United Kingdom. Have a chat with your adult-What is a city? Can you name any cities? Watch this video about the United Kingdom https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/class-clips-video/geography-ks1--ks2-the-united-kingdom/zhtgrj6 Can you name the capital city for each country in the United kingdom?

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MpJIg_3DnLkhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MpJIg_3DnLkhttps://vimeo.com/480761211https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/class-clips-video/geography-ks1--ks2-the-united-kingdom/zhtgrj6https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/class-clips-video/geography-ks1--ks2-the-united-kingdom/zhtgrj6https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/class-clips-video/geography-ks1--ks2-the-united-kingdom/zhtgrj6

  • So you will need to think and answer these questions… WHAT is happening in the picture? WHAT can you see in the picture? HOW can you describe what is happening? WHO is in the picture? HOW is the person in the picture feeling? WHAT can the person smell? WHAT can the person hear? WHAT can the person touch? What other ways can you think to describe the picture? Use the sheet in the resources to write your ideas on. Start to think of a story for the little girl in the picture… Who is she? Why is she there? Who is she there with? Does anything happen to her while she is there? Does she find something while she is there? What does she do while she is there? Tomorrow you will plan a story for the girl.

Look at the map in the resources section. Use google maps to help you locate the cities. How many can you find? Extension: Pick one of the cities to research in more detail and create a poster about it.

    Thursday 7th January

English Focus-To be able to plan a short story. Today we are going to think of a story for the picture. Here is the picture again…

Recap the vocabulary you generated during yesterday’s lessons. Now, we are going to think about these questions…

    1. Who is she?

Maths Focus- To be able to divide by 8 Children watch video https://vimeo.com/480761847 Remind children that the numbers can be switched around when multiplying, but when they are dividing a number they need to always start with the largest number. Children to complete the worksheet found in the resources section.

French Focus- To revise numbers to 20 and colours.

Today we are going to revise our learning on French learning. We are going to look at numbers to 20. Watch this video for numbers to 20: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dhj9SqrIZqI Look at this website for colours: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zjcbrj6/articles/z634kmn Only focus on this section

    https://vimeo.com/480761847https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dhj9SqrIZqIhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dhj9SqrIZqIhttps://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zjcbrj6/articles/z634kmnhttps://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zjcbrj6/articles/z634kmn

  • 2. Why is she there? 3. Who is she there with? 4. Does anything happen to her

while she there? If so, what? 5. Does she find something

while she is there? 6. What does she do while she

is there? 7. Does she lose something? 8. Who helps her solve her

problem? Complete the planning grid below. Then create a storyboard using the template below of your story – draw the pictures of what happens and write a sentence to explain the drawing. Make sure you know what happens because you will be writing it tomorrow.

Children to practise their times tables on Times Tables Rockstars.

Once you have explored the 2 links complete the 2 sheets in the resource section.

    Friday 8th January

English Focus-To be able to write a short story. Think back to our picture and our lessons since Wednesday. Discuss your adjectives and tell your story to another person in your household. Read through your plan and storyboard from yesterday. Using the writing templates below, write a short story about the picture – remember to use as much description as possible within your story. Read your story back – does it make sense? Is enough description used? Have I used the correct punctuation? Is my writing exciting?

Maths Focus- To be able to consolidate my knowledge of the 8 times table Children watch video https://vimeo.com/480763110 Remind children of all the multiplication and division facts they have learnt over the past two days. Encourage children to look for links between the number facts. Children to complete worksheet found in the resources section.

Science Focus- To design a magnetic game. Today we are going to design a game that uses magnets. Talk to your adult what you remember about magnets. What do magnets attract? What are the two poles called? Do opposite poles attract or repel? Watch these two videos: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zyttyrd/articles/zpvcrdm https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zyttyrd/articles/zw889qt Use the information you’ve just learnt to design a magnetic game. Think about:

    • What materials will you need?

  • • How will you play the game?

    • What are the rules of your game?

Here are some ideas to get you started.

Design and label your game on an A4 paper and then complete the sheet in the resource section to explain how your game works.

    Other Activities

    • New Year Research – can you research and find out about the other countries in the World and how 2021 was celebrated? Perhaps you could find some other clips from around the World?

    • Use the following link to practise your times tables https://ttrockstars.com

    • Try watching Newsround each day https://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/news/watch_newsround
