Last April Ronald McDonald House Charities received a wonderful surprise when Mr. Joseph Calvey, Sr. stopped by the Lewis St. House with his son, Joey. Joey was interested in doing a service project for the House and we took them both on a tour. While on the tour, Mr. Calvey noticed that the windows in the hallways were quite warm. He asked if we had problems with heat during the summer months and be-ing a South Texas House we responded with a big YES! He then informed us that he owned Mother’s Window Tint and would be interested in donating the tint and installation for the entire House! This would include all 20 bedrooms, ev-ery hallway, the manager’s apartment, and even

the sliding glass doors. We were floored! The thought of having our House tinted was amaz-

ing. Soon after, we met with Mr. Rich Meyer to go over details and before we knew it, the proj-ect was under way. The entire installation was done by Mother’s Window Tint employees who donated their time after work. Since then, we have noticed a huge improvement in the tem-perature throughout the House and we could not be happier! We would like to thank all of the in-stallers: Nick Bean, Chris Trevino, Daniel Mas-siate, Santos Sonora, Travis Garren, Ricky Soto, Mark Salazar, and Adam Moreno for donating their time and talents. Thank you to Rick Meyer for organizing and overseeing the project and a

very special thanks to Joseph Calvey, Sr. for his kindness and generosity to Ronald McDonald Charities. “The good folks at the San Antonio Ronald McDonald House gave Mother’s Win-dow Tint the privilege of doing something nice for the kids that stay there. Mother’s employees along with Huper Optik donated all the film and all the labor to put a great film to work for the kids,” said Joseph Calvey, Sr.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Wow. Where did the year go? I can’t believe that as I write this there are less than 70 days left in 2009! As always, this year has proven to be an exciting and busy one at the Ron-ald McDonald Houses. We have opened two family rooms in Laredo as an exten-sion of our chapter – one in the Doctor’s Hospital and the other in the Laredo Medi-cal Center. Each is unique and very heart-warming and has quickly become a special place within each hospital as families are us-ing the rooms on a regular basis. We’ve also upgraded our Lewis St. House with a brand new laminate wood floor that is just awesome!

As you prepare for the Holidays and 2010, please remember the Ronald Mc-Donald Houses in your giving. Birth-day, holiday and memorial gifts of any denomination are truly welcomed and appre-ciated, as are in-kind donations of services or donations of gently used household items.

We have some great events scheduled to carry us through the rest of the year and even some on the books for 2010 so please mark your calendars and save the date for:

Chair-ity Event New to Ronald McDonald HouseMark your calendar NOW to reserve Saturday, April 10 for an exciting, new fundraising event to benefit Ronald McDonald House charities.

Speaking of ‘chair-ities’….wouldn’t you love to see what exciting ideas local celebrities might come up with to decorate a special ‘chair’? Wouldn’t you like to make that chair a part of your home or office décor?

Following the decision to go away from the luncheon format and try something new, the Board came up with the idea to host a ‘Chair-ity Event’! The simple idea is to invite local celebs to donate their time and talent by decorating a chair – then auctioning off those chairs at a fun event!

Add in another exciting facet – the opportunity to host the event at the brand-new JW Marriott – Hill Country San Antonio - and you have the makings for a wonderful evening! Located off Evans Road and TPC Parkway, the Marriott is the site of the new TPC golf courses and will be opening in early Spring. Our event will be one of the first held there!This won’t be your standard, stuffy fundraiser…there will be lots to do and see! So watch for more exciting details soon about this ‘Chair-ity Event’!

Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Antonio is proud to announce the arrival of two new addi-tions to our family - two new Family Rooms in Laredo, Texas! The first Family Room, which opened August 5th, is located at Doctors Hospital inside of their Neonatal ICU. The Second room, located in Laredo Medical Center Hospital, is situated next to both the PICU and NICU.

The Family Rooms will serve as respite spaces for families utilizing these hospitals with their pediatric

patients. They will allow parents an opportunity to rest, relax and collect themselves while still being a stones throw away from their children. This, in, turn, will enable them to better focus on the recovery of their loved ones. The new Family Rooms are equipped with televisions, washers and dryers, snacks and tons of comfy furniture. Priscilla Salinas, Director of Marketing Business Development stated, “We are happy to partner with Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Anto-nio on this wonderful resource that will benefit the families of Laredo”. The rooms will be over seen by hospital staff and volunteers. “The room has been a blessing to our patients and their families,” said David Gonzalez, Sr., Community Rela-tions Coordinator of Doctor’s Hospital.

We are honored to include these two extraordinary medical facilities in our Ronald McDonald House family and look forward to a long partnership with the Laredo community to better the experiences of those families who need us most. WELCOME TO THE FAMILY!

SHARE YOUR HEARTBy Catherine Killinger

We have sent letters to our local schools regarding Share Your Heart. We have started to receive the reply cards and so far everyone has agreed to participate this school year. We will distribute hearts to the schools in January and collect the funds in February.

The Program also allows students to earn community service hours. So it is truly a great program for our local Ronald McDonald Houses and for the schools/stu-dents giving back to their community. We have a school that has already booked one Saturday each month until May 2010. These students come in and make a meal and serve the same to the families in the house, and interact with the chil-dren. These students are wonderful. The families are very appreciative.

Tennis Play Day and Luncheon

The 1st annual Friends of Ronald McDonald Houses Tennis Play Day and Luncheon was held on October 22nd. The weather was not our friend that day, but we had a wonderful luncheon at Sonterra Country Club and a fabulous fashion show courtesy of Elizabeth Eu-ropean Boutique.

We had several silent auction baskets and a beautiful David Yurman bracelet raffled. The event raised over $5000! We hope to make this a new Friends tradition! We were able to make up the tennis portion on October 29th. A big thank you to Michelle Dodi-er and her staff at Sonterra!!!

May 2010 the first San Antonio Ron-ald McDonald House will celebrate 25 years. As you are aware, there has been much growth in our pro-gram in these years, an addition on our original home, the opening of two more homes and just in the last three months we opened two Ron-ald McDonald House Family Rooms in Laredo. Besides the fact we have added locations, we have also in-creased the services we provide for the families. More meals are provid-ed than previously. We pick up milk for the families and home-baked cookies are always available. We also provide taxi vouchers for families needing transportation. What has never wavered or changed is our core mission. The mission of Ron-ald McDonald House Charities of San Antonio is to operate charitable facilities, which provide safe tempo-rary living accommodations for criti-cally ill children and their families while receiving medical treatment. The intent is to provide a home away from home where families in simi-lar circumstances can interact and lend and receive mutual support.

The sustainability of our charity has not happened by accident. We are very fortunate to have always been led by a dedicated but prudent Board of Directors. Just as importantly they have always had vision, look-ing for ways to enhance and expand the important services we provide.

Another extremely important key is our staff. I believe we have some of the most selfless, dedicated staff that you could find. We have very little turn over because our staff are like

family and truly care about the fami-lies we serve. They care about mak-ing a difference and understand that in being part of the Ronald McDon-ald House Family they get back so much. They are the ones that are here day in and day out and who not only attend to the needs of the families but also actually touch their hearts.

Elizabeth Medina, Executive As-sistant, came to us in 1997. She is highly organized, willing to do whatever needs to be done and is not afraid to try new things. She has good instincts about peo-ple and is an excellent listener.

Heather Bivin, Volunteer and Guest Relations, began in 1998. She has a real love for our families and a gift for telling and making you truly feel the Ronald McDonald House story.

Ryan Bivin, Santa Rosa House Manager, started as a part-time em-ployee in 2000. In January 2002 when we opened our third location he became House Manager. He has great empathy for our fami-lies and they relate to his sincerity.

Susie Valdez, Medical Center House Manager, retired from the city. Once she decided to re-enter the workforce she found a home with RMHC. She has been with us since 2002. She has a smile for ev-eryone and can make a family feel better even on a very trying day. Lori Rodriguez Shearer, Infor-mation Specialist, began part-time in 2003 and then full-time in 2008. Lori is great with our fami-lies, extremely dependable and al-ways anxious to expand her skills.

Juanita Muniz Bivin, Lewis St. House Manager, started in 2004. She has been a quick and eager learner, tak-ing her responsibility very seriously. She puts in extra effort to make the house comfortable for the families.

Joyce Galinski, Lewis St. Resident Manager, began as a weekend manag-er then moved into the Resident Man-ager apartment about 18 months ago. She and her son Noah enjoy inter-acting with the families at the house.

Doris Hensely is our Medical Cen-ter Resident and Evening Manager. She and her husband Frank began as our Lewis St. Resident Managers in 1987. After three years they retired and moved to Seguin. Frank passed away 5 years ago but Doris decided she wanted to come back “home” to Ronald McDonald House in 2008. She is affectionately referred to as “Grandma” by many of the families.

Jennifer Miears is Evening Manager at Santa Rosa. She started with us in 2005. She has a real rapport with the families and is very conscientious.

Natalie Avalos became Eve-ning Manager at Lewis Street in 2006. She is extremely depend-able and always pleasant to be around. She has a special bond with the little ones that stay with us.

Additionally, we have a wonder-ful group of caring Weekend Re-lief Managers who make sure our homes are well looked after when our daily staff is off. They are an important part of our team.

Cindy Timmins has been Adminis-trative Assistant for the Friends of Ronald McDonald House for the past ten years. Until recently she did

all of her work from home but has started coming to our Medical Center of-fice once a week. She is a wonderful ambassador for the “Friends” who appreciate her for keep-ing their group organized.

On a personal note, as you can see there are several “Bivin” family members listed. When I began 24 years ago my children,

Heather and Ryan, spent many hours at the Ronald McDonald House while I worked. They napped under my desk and spent happy times playing with the children living with us. They grew up understand-ing and appreciating the vital role Ronald McDon-ald House Charities plays in our community. I could not be more proud of the adults they have become

or more honored that they also have chosen to serve the families of Ronald Mc-Donald House. In April of this year Ryan and Juanita Muniz married. She had been part of the RMH family for 5 years and it is now nice to welcome her to the “Bivin” family.

Working at our Ronald McDonald Houses is not a “job”- it is a calling. We

are extremely fortunate to have found such dedicated staff to devote their days to easing just a little of the struggle families of critical-ly ill children face. I thank each of you for making my job a little easier and our houses much more like a “home”. Your work does not go unnoticed and you are appreciated.

Membership Wine and Cheese

On October 8th, the Friends of the Ronald McDonald Houses held a wine and cheese party at the beautiful estate of Trey and Nan-cy Batchelder. We had great support from our current Friends and signed up many new Friends that evening, including a Life Member! Big thanks to Tracy Gilmer and Wendy Hammond for organizing this fun evening.

E v e n i n g M e a l s Thus far the “Evening Meals Program” has been a great success. Thank you to all those ladies that have been so generous with their time to get meals to our families. It is now November and I am in need of volunteers for the next few weeks. We pro-vide prepared meals every Tuesday alternating between the Lewis Street house and the Medical Center house. It doesn’t take much time nor much expense but is so appreciated by the families. It is also a great way for high school students to get community ser-vice hours for those college applications.
