I know I say it every year, but it’s hard to believe that another school year has come and gone. I hope this news-
letter finds you well and that you are enjoying the beginning of summer. As I write this, our summer projects are in full
swing. Johnson Control has been installing the new heating units down in the elementary. Master Electric is currently
running miles of cable for the new fire/emergency alarm system. The weight room is completely gutted, and we are
anxiously awaiting the arrival of our new equipment. Bell Roofing will be here in a couple weeks to put a new roof on the
old gym roof. It’s been busy around here since school got out. All these projects will be completed because of the
generous support of the community through Foundations, the Sinking Fund and the Technology and Transportation Bond.
I cannot thank the Superior Central community enough for your support of these two millages which allow us to make
improvements to the building without using General Fund dollars. Without your support I’m not sure where we would be
financially as a district.
I’ve recently read a couple of online news articles from local publications that have left me feeling concerned.
The latest article that I read was run by TV6 from the Associated Press on June 10th. The headline read “Michigan’s falling
teacher salaries push some from the field”. Another article from the Mining Journal on May 10th was titled, “Only 25% of
Michigan teachers recommend job”. After re-reading these articles I am still upset. What awful headlines about the
profession that I love. Yep, teachers are underpaid, we know that. Survey every teacher in this district and I can
guarantee you that none of them will tell you that they went into this profession to get rich. Has the average teacher
salary statewide remained stagnant over the last decade? Yep, on average. Are teachers paying more for insurance than
they did in the past? Yep. Have retirement benefits been cut? Yes. Are these really the reasons that teachers are leaving
the profession? I don’t know. I do know this; more and more are being asked of teachers than any time in history.
Teachers now more than ever are expected to be responsible for not only the academic needs of their students, but also
their students’ emotional, social, psychological, physical and sometimes nutritional needs. We expect teachers to push
students to be the best that they can be and hold students to high standards, but not be too hard on them. We expect
teachers to be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to answer homework or other classroom questions. We expect
teachers to put the needs of everyone else in front of their own needs, and we expect them to meet all these needs with
a smile. What I think we often forget is that teachers are people too. If you ask me, the reasons that teachers are leaving
the profession is because we give them so much responsibility, and may I point out, responsibility that they signed up for
and have gladly take on and then we do crazy things like rate their effectiveness from a state test given in the spring of
the year. Yep, teachers are leaving the field and not as many young people are going into teaching. I believe, and I could
be wrong, that the salary component is only one of the reasons.
When you see a teacher in the grocery store or getting ice cream this summer, don’t say, “must be nice having
summers off”, instead thank them, and let then know you appreciate all they do. Also, if you saw or read the TV6 story
that said that the average teacher salary in Michigan is $63,024 know that the average teacher salary at Superior Central
is $17,891.24 less than that.

Noah Joseph Groulx plans to attend Central Michigan University to study Biochemistry and then attend Medical School to become an Anesthesiologist. He is the recipient of the the Centralis Gold Scholarship, a Grow and Lead: Community and Youth Development Excel-lence in Education Scholarship, the MCPA Scholarship, the Heino Memorial Scholarship, the Chester E. A Wrap to a Busy Year of Projects As the school bell rang at 1:30 on June 5, marking the start of the semester exams, the Natural Resources and Watercraft Design class put away the last piece of the school’s wind turbine/solar panel system. Putting the finishing touches on the last project at the last second was a fitting end because it seemed to be a reoccurring theme for entire school year. Working togeth-er, eleven students built eleven solo canoes (pirogues), a punt boat, plus five other conservation projects. But, however stressful it was at times, it was also very successful as each of our goals were eventually met.
*Luke Lintula worked on improving grouse habitat by planting hawthorn trees in our school forest. *Wyatt Fink added solar panels to our wind turbine system to increase renewable energy capture. *Jordan Ramos and Alayna Tyner built and placed bat boxes to supply shelter for these beneficial mammals besieged by White Nose Syndrome. *Jeremy Koski and Avery Lindgren built and placed fish cribs in the Quarry Pond to provide habitat for its fish population. *Sophie Maki and Charlotte Himes maintained and monitored the water quality and fish health in our expanded aquaponics system.
Aurora Fisher, Bailey Morgan and Abbi Thayer drew up plans, built a scale model, then with a little help from everybody, built a 14 ft. duck hunting punt boat. Charlotte, Sophie, Alayna and Jordan constructed a removable lath floor for it, Jeremy and Avery pitched in to build an 8 ft. push paddle, and finally Luke and Wyatt created 2 seats/storage containers to add to the overall package. This summer the class will travel to the Ducks Unlimited State Convention in Lansing and see it raffled off to raise mon-ey for U.P. wetland conservation.
As always, the culminating activity of the year is our Spring Boat/Camping Trip on the Au Train Basin. Eleven students launched their pirogues for the first time on the morning of May 17 into a very strong headwind. It was with a good deal of effort that we paddled to our first stop to meet Teri Grout of the Conserva-tion District to learn about invasive species in our area. With the wind at our backs, it was a fast trip back to the campground for a quick lunch and a presentation by Alan Iho about his handmade boat. Alan traveled with us in his electrically pow-ered craft on our morning excursion, so we all got a good look at his boat on the water, but now that it was back on its trailer we were able to see it in detail as Alan spoke to the class about his boat’s design, construction technique and future boat-building plans. Tim Schirtzinger was up next and demonstrated the specialized camping gear used in extended kayaking trips as well as giving some pointers on how to get started in the sport when money is a little tight. Finally, I wrapped up the day’s lessons by spending a bit of time talking about keystone species in various habitats and also how people can make small contributions in a variety of creative methods to enhance the environment.
The rest of our camping trip was spent around campfires, taking quick trips in our pirogues, fishing, or just trying to stay warm and dry. Thank you to Tim Schirtzinger and Mary Beth Waring for chaperoning our trip and to all of the people who have helped us achieve our goals once again this year. Harvesting and Planting Trees for Sustainability The long term goals of Superior Central’s school forest have always been to increase its biodiversity and age structure while using it as a learning tool. The Agriculture and Forestry class continued to work towards our goals this spring through the selective harvest of some trees and the planting of others. On May 21 our Forest Stewardship forester Jim Ferris, assisted by forester Jason Caron, instructed the students how to improve the quality and biodiversity of a forest through the removal of trees with deformities or disease allowing for more sunlight and nutrients to get to the trees we wish to keep for the future. After this instruc-tion, our students set out in 6 teams within our predetermined 4 acre plot to calculate basal area, evaluate each tree individually, then flag agreed upon trees for harvest. A week later these same students met Teri Grout of the Alger County Conservation District in the school’s East field to assist her and her team in the planting of a diversity of coniferous and deciduous tree seedlings. Five years ago we worked with Teri in this same field planting a wide variety of seedlings and it was very gratifying to see how they have grown since. This year’s planting filled in the areas where we experienced some past mortality and will add to the health of this wonderfully diverse section of our forest.

Superior Central Athletics - Path to the Future Success
The overall goal of the Superior Central Administration and School Board is to develop the most fair and effective use of gen-
eral funds to support Superior Central Athletic Activities for the betterment of students and the community. In an effort to
maintain an excellent athletic program at Superior, the Administration and Board of Education of Superior Central School are
implementing the following plan. The terms “funded” and “non-funded” will no longer exist. All athletic programs will follow
the same guidelines and regulations with equality.
Beginning July of 2019 the following guidelines will be followed:
1. Registration Fee
a. $100 Registration fee for all athletes. *See Registration Guidelines
b. There is a family cap of $250.
c. A student athlete who cannot pay the fee, due to financial difficulties, can apply to the athletic direc-
tor for scholarship consideration. Forms are available in the athletic office; however, qualification is
based upon need. All inquiries will be confidential.
2. Sports – Minimum Participation
a. Minimum number per athletic team
i. Football – 13
ii. Basketball – 7
iii. Volleyball – 8
iv. Cross Country – 5 (per gender)
v. Track – 6 (per gender)
vi. Baseball – 12
vii. Softball – 12
* Administrative discretion can be used if numbers are lower.
b.Sports with lower numbers may be co-oped with other schools if an agreement is reached between
the schools.
3. Game Workers and Officials
All fees associated with game workers and officials will be covered by the district.
4. Transportation
a. Transportation costs (using Superior Central buses) to and from all athletic events will be covered by
the district.
5. Fundraising
a. There will be 4 Athletic Department Fundraisers plus advertisements (banners)
b. Program Fundraisers
i. ALL programs will be allowed to do up to 2 fundraisers per fiscal year (July 1st to June 30th)
to raise money for specific needs (not just “for the program”)
Beginning July of 2020 – Pending Contract Negotiations:
All coaches will be paid under the Schedule B portion of the SCEA Bargaining Agreement.

V School Volunteers: Who are they, what do they do and how do I become one?
A school volunteer is an important part of the school environment. They pick up the gaps not covered by other staff, spark new ideas, do fundraising, chaperon, tutor, coach…… The government defines a school volunteer as: a parent, community member or other adult who assist at a school site or program on a regular or semi-regular basis. Also included in this definition are those who help on a one-time basis
transporting or working with children without the direct oversight of District staff. Parents who observe or visit their child at school on a regular basis and stay more than 15 minutes each time are considered volunteers.
A volunteer criminal record check and history affidavit are required for all volunteers. All volunteers must complete a background check. A copy of your driver’s license should accompany the application. It is now required by the state, doesn’t take very long, is of no cost to the volunteer, confidential and is a precautionary meas-ure for the safety of our children.
