First of all, the Western Conference is very strong this year so no matter what I believe or say about KVCC’s strengths, it’s all relative to how strong our opponents are. However, with that said, I believe that this year’s team is a very balanced team. Our attackers are tall, strong and are excellent hitters. In volleyball, height is an asset, our front row can average 6’0” so one of our primary strengths will be blocking.

We have a blend of freshmen and sophomore defenders who, as a group, have great court vision and pass and

serve receive as well as any team I have coached at KVCC. It’s always nice to have and an experienced collegiate setter but we don’t; however, both setters have good athletic abilities, are strong, have a desire to learn, and are talented. As we progress through the season they will mature and lead the team on the court.

Winning a match, conference title, or going to the Nationals requires a lot of intangibles to come into alignment. We must be relatively injury free, all players must be willing to sacrifice during the season, attitudes must remain positive, individual and team goals must be compatible, and sometimes we just need to be fortunate.

When you walk into the gym during practice the first thing you’re struck with is the enthusiasm of the team. Individuals have commented that when they’re down the hall outside of the gym they hear the team communicating loudly. If I were to mention one characteristic of the team it would be their tenacity and relentless pursuit to keep the ball in play. The heart of our defense is our defensive specialists. They are the vocal leaders of our team. Their positive talk and “never give up” attitude inspires the rest of the team.

This year’s Cougar team will be fun to watch. It’s very evident when you watch them that they enjoy playing volleyball. They work hard and have fun while playing the game they love.
