Scouting the CougarsColumbia enters the weekend with a 3-1 record on the year. The Cougars suffered their lone loss of the season against No. 9-ranked Midland (Neb.) last weekend. Penn Liu leads the offensive effort with 47 kills on the year, averaging 3.4 kills per set. Sashiko Heredia leads the squad with 141 of the team’s 147 total assists, while Mikah Simpson has a team-high 49 digs.

A Tough Road AheadLindsey Wilson faces Columbia as part of the Hampton Inn Volleyball Classic hosted this weekend by Columbia. The Blue Raiders open the competition against defending NAIA Na-tional Champion Park (Mo.) on Friday, followed by a meeting with No. 3-ranked powerhouse Missouri Baptist later that day. On Saturday, the Blue Raiders face Lindenwood-Bel-levillebeforethefinaleagainstthehostCougars.

The End of a StreakThe Blue Raiders suffered a 3-2 upset loss at the hands of Cumberlands(Ky.)onTuesdaynight,theirfirstregular-sea-son Mid-South Conference loss since Oct. 30, 2012. The loss came in a hard fought effort from the Patriots, who battled backfromtwosetsdowntosecuretheirfirstwinoveratop-10 ranked program in school history. Lindsey Wilson had previously won 33-consecutive regular-season MSC matches, including back-to-back undefeated marks in both 2013 and 2014.

Andy Cavins begins his fifth season as the head volleyball coach at Lindsey Wilson College in 2015.In four seasons at the helm of the Blue Raider volleyball program, Cavins has made four-consecutive national tournament appearances while producing at least 30 wins each season.A historic 2014 season saw the Blue Raiders claim their second-straight Mid-South Conference regular-season title with a perfect 14-0 mark in conference play. It marks the second-consecutive season Lindsey Wilson has gone unbeaten in conference play after posting an 18-0 mark in 2013.The 2014 Blue Raider team recorded 28-straight victories during the season, the longest streak in program history.Lindsey Wilson also advanced to the NAIA National Championship Tournament Bracket Play for the first time in program history in 2014 after advancing to Pool Play the previous two seasons.For his efforts, Cavins was named the Mid-South Conference Coach of the Year for the first time in his career in 2014. Yeniffer Ramirez became the program’s first-ever NAIA First Team All-American while also garnering Southeast Region Player of the Year, NAIA National Championship All-Tournament Team and MSC Player of the Year honors.2014 saw three total NAIA All-American honorees, five Blue Raiders earn NAIA Scholar-Athlete honors, six all-conference selections, 12 academic all-conference honor-ees and the MSC Freshman of the Year for the third-consecutive season.During the 2011 and 2012 seasons, Lindsey Wilson won back-to-back Mid-South Conference Tournament titles -- the only two MSC Tournament titles in the program’s history.During his first season, Cavins led Lindsey Wilson to a 31-3 record en route to winning the program’s first Mid-South Conference regular season title. His Blue Raiders backed up the historical 2011 season with 30 wins in 2012, including winning twice in the NAIA National Tournament.Cavins owns a career record of 158-67, including 139-30 at Lindsey Wilson. He is 54-6 all-time against Mid-South competition in the regular season.Prior to Lindsey Wilson, Cavins spent two seasons as head coach at NCAA Div. III LeTourneau (Texas). He is a former assistant coach at the University of Georgia.At LeTourneau, Cavins took over for a program that had just completed a 2-28 season with no conference wins in 2008. During Cavins’ tenure, the team compiled the most wins in the program’s history over a two-year span.Cavins’ team amassed a 3.23 cumulative grade point average -- the highest of any sport on the LeTourneau campus. His team also concluded the season with five all-conference players, including the American Southwest Conference sportsmanship award winner.As an assistant at Georgia, Cavins was part of a staff that inherited a Bulldog team that had finished 6-25 in the season prior to their arrival. Cavins helped Georgia to a 17-13 record in his first season with the Bulldogs and had a First Team All-Southeastern Conference performer and a First Team All-SEC Freshman team selection.Cavins’ main responsibilities at Georgia included on-court development, recruiting coordinator and camp director. As a staff, Georgia was able to sign a Top-50 recruit-ing class that included the nation’s second-ranked setter.Cavins -- a former NCAA Division I baseball student-athlete at Baylor (Texas) -- also used his time on campus to serve as a student assistant for the Baylor volleyball team. Cavins participated as a practice player, on-court trainer and facility manager.In addition to his collegiate coaching, Cavins coached at the Dallas Premier and Dallas Summit Volleyball Clubs.Including his work at the Dallas club, Cavins also has coached in the Georgia Juniors Volleyball Club -- where he was co-director and 18’s Open coach. He also worked with the Dallas Juniors Volleyball Club and the Addison Boy’s Volleyball Club.Cavins also enjoys experience as a volleyball camp director at every level. He has led six different high-school camps, the Fort Worth YMCA camp, and camps at South-ern Methodist University, Baylor, Georgia and LeTourneau.Cavins graduated from Baylor in 2004 and later completed his master’s degree at Georgia in 2009. He and his wife, Jessica, have one son, Kellar.
