A SILENT TRAGEDY This article was written by

Dr. Luis Rojas Marcos, PsychiatristThere is a silent tragedy that is unfolding today in our homes, and concerns our

most precious jewels: our children. Our children are in a devastating emotional state! In the last 15 years, researchers have given us increasingly alarming statistics on a sharp and steady increase in childhood mental illness that is now reaching epidemic proportions:

Statistics do not lie:• 1 in 5 children have mental health problems• A 43% increase in ADHD has been noted• A 37% increase in adolescent depression has been noted• There has been a 200% increase in the suicide rate in children aged 10 to 14

What is happening and what are we doing wrong?Today's children are being over-stimulated and over-gifted with material objects,

but they are deprived of the fundamentals of a healthy childhood, such as:• Emotionally available parents• Clearly defined limits• Responsibilities• Balanced nutrition and adequate sleep• Movement in general but especially outdoors• Creative play, social interaction, unstructured game opportunities and boredom spaces

Instead, in recent years, children have been filled with:• Digitally distracted parents• Indulgent and permissive parents who let children "rule the world" and whoever sets the rules• A sense of right, of deserving everything without earning it or being responsible for obtaining it• Inadequate sleep and unbalanced nutrition• A sedentary lifestyle• Endless stimulation, technological nannies, instant gratification and absence of boring moments

What to do?If we want our children to be happy and healthy individuals, we have to wake up

and get back to basics. It is still possible! Many families see immediate improve-ments after weeks of implementing the following recommendations

• Set limits and remember that you are the captain of the ship. Your children will feel more confident knowing that you have control of the helm.• Offer children a balanced lifestyle full of what children NEED, not just what they WANT. Don't be afraid to say "no" to your children...

BreakfastBreakfast is served at the elementary

beginning at 7:55 a.m. (cost $1.75) and at 8:00 a.m. in the

MS/HS building (cost $1.80). All students are welcome to eat

breakfast at school.

OPEN ENROLLMENT DEADLINE

The deadline for open enrollment applications for the 2020-2021 school year is March 2, 2020

for grades 1-12 students. The date for Kindergarten and preschool special education

students is September 1, 2020. The open enrollment applications and athletic eligibility and transportation assistance information may be obtained from the district office or on-line at www.educateiowa.gov (select the A to Z Index

Tab; then letter O; Open Enrollment). The Iowa Law requires an application for each child in a family requesting open enrollment and the form must be filed with both the res-ident and receiving districts. If you have any

questions or need more information, please call the district office at 515-827-5479.

5th Grade ConcessionsThe South Hamilton fifth grade students are operating a concession stand in the

elementary gym this fall. They are selling popcorn, candy, and beverages during

Junior High Volleyball games. The students are learning how to count money correctly, greet customers,

and provide good customer service. The money raised will be used to help

fund their trip to the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha next May. The fifth graders invite everyone to come and watch the

Junior High games and support the concession stand.

AbsencesIf your child is absent from school, please

contact the elementary office at 515-827-5096. If you do not contact the

school, the secretary will contact you to ac-count for your child’s absence.

...if what they want is not what they need.• Provide nutritious food and limit junk food.• Spend at least one hour a day outdoors doing activities such as: cycling, walking, fishing, bird/insect watching• Enjoy a daily family dinner without smartphones or distracting technology.• Play board games as a family or if children are very small for board games, get carried away by their interests and allow them to rule in the game• Involve your children in homework or household chores according to their age (folding clothes, ordering toys, hanging clothes, unpacking food, setting the table, feeding the dog etc.)• Implement a consistent sleep routine to ensure your child gets enough sleep. The schedules will be even more important for school-age children.• Teach responsibility and independence. Do not over- protect them against all frustration or mistakes. Misunderstanding will help them build resilience and learn to overcome life's challenges,• Do not carry your children's backpack, do not carry their backpacks, do not carry the homework they forgot, do not peel bananas or peel oranges if they can do it on their own (4-5 years). Instead of giving them the fish, teach them to fish.• Teach them to wait and delay gratification.• Provide opportunities for "boredom", since boredom is the moment when creativity awakens. Do not feel responsible for always keeping children entertained.• Do not use technology as a cure for boredom, nor offer it at the first second of inactivity.• Avoid using technology during meals, in cars, restaurants, shopping centers. Use these moments as opportunities to socialize by training the brains to know how to work when they are in mode: "boredom"• Help them create a "bottle of boredom" with activity ideas for when they are bored.• Be emotionally available to connect with children and teach them self-regulation and social skills.• Turn off the phones at night when children have to go to bed to avoid digital distraction.• Become a regulator or emotional trainer for your children. Teach them to recognize and manage their own frustrations and anger.• Teach them to greet, to take turns, to share without running out of anything, to say thank you and please, to acknowledge the error and apologize (do not force them), be a model of all those values you instill.• Connect emotionally - smile, hug, kiss, tickle, read, dance, jump, play or crawl with them.

Basketball SeatingThe varsity boys’ and girls’ basketball season is here! We are all excited to attend the games and cheer the Hawks on to a lot of victories. The section or the K-6 grade students is the northwest corner of the gym on the balcony level. Student will not be required to sit in this section during home wresting meets.

Visitor/Volunteer BadgesAny visitor/volunteer in the elementary school has al-ways been asked to stop in the office and check in. We will now issue a visitor’s or volunteer’s badge to wear while in the building during school hours. The badges should be returned to the office when they leave.

Book Fair:We would like to extend a big thank you to all the stu-dents, parents, and community members who helped make the fall elementary school Scholastic Book Fair a success. Through your generous purchases, we were able to select many new books for the library. We hope you enjoy the new books in your home librar-ies as much as the students enjoy the new books in the elementary library. The support from the surrounding communities is very much appreciated!

Back to School

Winter WearSnow will soon be covering our playground at the ele-mentary. After the first snow arrives, all students will be required to wear boots outside for recess. It is also important for students to have something to wear on their heads and hands. These items help make recess more enjoyable for the students!

Winter RecessA reminder that students in the elementary must have a physician’s note to stay in from recess anytime due to health concerns. Mr. Hemphill watches the wind chill via our own KCCI school-net site and we are very con-servative in our parameters compared to what other districts do. Anytime we can get the students moving around outside, away from all the closed-in conditions of the classroom, is great during cold and flu season.

IOWA COLLEGE APPLICATION CAMPAIGNDuring the month of October, students in grades 9-12 participated in the Iowa College Application Campaign sponsored by the Iowa College Access Network. The pur-pose of this program is to get students exposed to the options for post-secondary education and training. All seniors were strongly encouraged to apply to a college, university, or vocational program. During seminar time (the last 30 minutes of each school day), students com-pleted a variety of activities related to college options.

TRIVIA CONTESTThere was a daily trivia question in the morning an-nouncements related to Iowa Colleges and Universities or scavenger hunt questions in which students had to find out the answer by asking the teachers. 1st place- Mr. Entner’s 10th grade

COLLEGE APPLICATIONSIowa Central, Simpson, Graceland, University of North-ern Iowa, Iowa State, and Des Moines Area Community College reps were here to help inform students about their respective college or university. All seniors were encouraged to apply to one college by the month of Oc-tober. Students interested in applying to other colleges had time during seminar to complete applications, look for scholarships, write essays for applications, and get letters of recommendation. Seniors also learned how to draft an activities resume, which they will submit with the general scholarship ap-plication in the spring.49 out of our 59 students completed applications during the month. Out of those 10 that did not, some were waiting on test scores to complete applications.

SENIOR YEAR CHECKLISTDecember:

• Continue completing grant/scholarship applications.• Stay Focused! Grades during your senior year can impact admittance to college.• Watch for your Student Aid Report (SAR) if you’ve filed your FAFSA. Check that it lists all the colleges requiring receipt of your FAFSA.

January:• Determine a college budget based on salary expec-tations for your chosen career or industry. Visit ACT-profile.org• Ask your school counselor to send your first semes-ter transcripts to your top colleges.• Watch the mail for letters of acceptance.• Send in college housing applications.

JUNIOR YEAR CHECKLISTDecember:

• Begin researching scholarships. Keep an ongoing file of scholarship and financial aid information (such as criteria, amounts, contact persons, and deadlines). Check out www.icansucceed.org for free scholarship searches. Avoid searches that charge fees.• Meet with college representatives at your school and keep looking at colleges online.• Register now if you are planning to take the January SAT or the February ACT. Determine if the colleges you are looking at required the writing portion of the ACT. Go to www.actstudent.org/sampletest/ , www.act-student.org/testprep/ or Chegg.com for test prep and practice tests.

January:• Build a list of colleges to consider. Use online college match tools such as Chegg.com or CollegeRaptor.com to find the best fit and compare estimates for grants and scholarships. Begin scheduling visits to the col-leges that fit.• Become familiar with the financial aid process and forms for the colleges you are considering
