Requirement to Publish Notices of How to Report Abuse

As part of the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People, approved by the U.S. Bishops in 6446, each parish is required to publish notices in their bulletins that explain how and where people can report allegations of sexual child abuse. A Victim Assistance Program has been established by the Diocese of St. Augustine and pamphlets are currently available in the hallway outside the parish of-fice and in the church vestibule. Please make a call to report any suspicions of abuse.

ATTENTION The Diocese of Saint Augustine treats all allegations of sexu-al misconduct seriously and deals with all allegations in a prompt, confidential and thorough manner. To Report Abuse, call: Diocesan Victim Assistance Coordinator (904) 262-3200, ext. 129, or the Department of Children and Fami-lies at 1-800-96-Abuse (800) 962-2873.

STEWARDSHIP SPOTLIGHT - THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER

I want to focus below on one line from the first reading, but before I do, I would like to pass on some-thing that I remember from a homily on this gospel from many, many years ago. This passage from the gospel of John draws parallels to Peter’s denial of the Suffering Jesus and now his chance for reconciliation with the Risen Lord. Notice how there is a charcoal fire at the shore, just like there was a charcoal fire at the palace of the high priest from the Passion story of John. This links the two settings. Peter denied Jesus three times at the first charcoal fire, and now in response to Jesus’ questioning, he professes his love for Jesus three times at the char-coal fire at the shore. Jesus is always calling us to repent and is always giving us second chances. Do we do the same for those who trespass again us?

The line from the first reading is Peter telling the Sanhedrin, “We must obey God rather than men.” What other course of action is there? How could it be otherwise, not only for the apostles, but for us? If we really know God’s will in our lives, how can we deny his will so that we please humans instead? But don’t we do that all the time? And we cannot claim ignorance of God’s will, for we have his Word, his Spirit, and his Church to make it clear to us. One of my favorite Easter Vigil readings is from Baruch, “Blessed are we, O Israel; for what pleases God is known to us!” (4:4).

Jesus said that the Father promises to send us his Spirit if we just ask: “If you then, who are wicked, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the Father in heaven give the holy Spirit to those who ask him?” (Luke 11:13). This is a dangerous prayer to make with complete faith and sincerity, for if God’s will for us in every moment and situation in our lives was really clear to us, we would not have wiggle room for doing our own will or that of humans.

As we continue to celebrate God’s saving mercy through the sacrifice of Jesus during this Easter Season and as we move towards celebration of Pentecost, let us be bold and pray for the Holy Spirit to reveal God’s will to us and to then give us the courage and strength to follow his will.

2016 BISHOP’S ANNUAL STEWARDSHIP APPEAL

The April 3, 2016 report from the Diocese indi-cates total family participation at 23.47%, a 12.46% increase over 2015. Our goal was 22% of our families participation in the Appeal: first goal accomplished. Congratulations! The 2016 Bishop’s Annual Stewardship Appeal is an invitation for every Catholic family to respond with a generous heart. Our parishioners and donors pledged a total of $48,202.00 and the Diocese has re-ceived $29,194.00 from us. Thank you for your contin-ued support of the Bishop’s Appeal. Gifts to the Appeal offer you a way to joyfully share your gifts in mercy with others. To make a dona-tion or pledge visit www.givecentral.org/dosa2016/.

As one faith, one family, we can do so much more.
