SAINT OF THE WEEK:
ST. FRANCES XAVIER CABRINI
November 13
Born in 1850, Frances began her charitable works at an orphanage in Italy and became a nun at age 27. As prioress of the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart, Pope Leo XIII sent her and six sisters to New York City to work with thousands of Italian immigrants. Despite many struggles in finding a home for her first orphanage there, she never gave up and eventually established one. Over 35 years, she founded 67 institutions dedicated to caring for the poor, the abandoned, the uneducated and the sick. She organized schools and adult education classes. Following her examples of compassion and dedication, many learned how best to provide care for as such as these. She became the first U.S. citizen to be canonized. Her deep trust in the loving care of God gave her the strength to be a valiant woman doing the work of Christ.

Weekly Message from Deacon Rob on the Readings for Ordinary Time
Through Adam and Eve, both spiritual and physical death came into the world destroying immortality for mankind. Ever since the “Happy Fault”, mankind has constantly struggled to regain immortality on his own. In ancient times, it was commonly believed that the primary method of accomplishing this was through the continuation of the blood line through heirs. If your name was remembered and contin-ued onward into the future then you continued to “live”. However, the Divine Will was that mankind would, once again, gain both physical and spiritual immortality. This would be accom-plished by the second Adam, Jesus, through his Cross and Resurrection. So, it is not surprising that belief in a resurrection for mankind arose. Likewise, doubt in this belief was sown, too. Nevertheless, Sacred Scripture is woven with the struggle for acceptance of a resurrection which would come with the fruition of the Divine Promise in the Messiah.
In today’s first reading from 2nd Maccabees, the promise of a resurrection is presented in no uncertain terms. In Maccabees, seven brothers are arrested and tortured because they will not forsake their religion through idolatrous actions. All seven brothers profess a belief in a resurrection that will be given them by their God for being faithful. In contrast, they proclaim that only death awaits those who maltreat the just.
In the second reading from the second Letter of Saint Paul to the Thessalonians, the apostle, Paul urges the faithful to pray for the community and him This faith in Divine Love permeates the reading allowing all to accept the trials and tribulations that await them. As in Maccabees, the Divine Love is anticipated and the hope and faith the faithful have in God allows them the confidence they need to spread the Word that affirms the promise of Christ to a resurrection by a loving God who promises them eternal life – the salient message of their loving God.
It is this new resurrected life that is the message of today’s Gospel by Luke. In the Gospel, Jesus attempts to explain two factors to the Sadducees who deny a resurrection. In an attempt to trap Jesus, the Sadducees present him with a problem that they feel will counter his beliefs. Using
Moses and the Law, these elite men know that it is required for a male Jew to marry the widow of their brother if he has not left any children. In ancient times, a person’s immortality was associated with the heir who would carry on the name for posterity. It was the power
of the name that assured an individual an immortal existence of sorts. As a result, the Sadducees posed the following problem to Jesus. They suggested that an individual with six brothers died without leaving any heirs thus requiring the next brother to marry the widow and produce an heir. However, each brother married he widow leaving
no heirs. So, they asked, assuming there was a resurrection, whose wife would she be when the resurrection took place. Expecting to embarrass Jesus and prove their own belief in no resurrection, these knowledgeable men were stumped by Christ when he explained that the resurrected would be like angels – neither marrying or intending to marry. Then, using Scripture, Christ explains that Moses, himself, supports the idea of a resurrection when he addresses the Lord using terms that reveal God is a God of the Living not the Dead.
Holy Mother the Church desires us to realize and to affirm our own faith in our resurrection. As we approach the end of the Church Year, she reminds us of the Gospel and the promises that Christ made to us. Being the first fruit, Jesus’ own Resurrection assures us of God’s love and desire to have us with Him eternally. Like the brothers in the story of Maccabees, we are encouraged to remain steadfast in our faith. Like Paul’s message to the Thessalonians, we are encouraged to resist the persecution and doubts of the world and to preach the Gospel of Christ. Finally, Holy Mother the Church reminds us of the words of Jesus, Himself, who affirms a resurrection for us that will make us like “angels” of heaven in order that we can embrace the love and mercy of the Divine. With the Solemnity of Christ the King just a few weeks away, Christians are assured and prepare themselves for the Final Judgement before Christ our King for whom all things were created.
