General notes
The Manurewa electorate includes Weymouth, Clendon Park, Hill Park and Manurewa in the south of the electorate, and Wiri and Manukau City in the north. It also includes some of southern Papatoetoe. The eastern boundary of the electorate is the Southern Motorway.
The Manurewa electorate has existed continuously since 1963.
In 2020, Manurewa gained an area south of Papatoetoe and lost areas around Greenmeadows and Redoubt Road to the new electorate of Takanini. No changes were made to the boundaries in 2014.
Labour MPs have always held the Manurewa seat with the exception of 1975 to 1978, when it was held by Merv Wellington (National Party). The electorate is currently represented by Louisa Wall (Labour Party), who was elected in 2011. Wall is a former Silver Fern and Black Fern and is the first woman to represent Manurewa. Other prominent Manurewa MPs include Roger Douglas who was Minister of Finance during New Zealand’s economic reforms of the 1980s; and George Hawkins who was Minister of Police and Minister of Internal Affairs in the early 2000s.
Census 2018 showed strong annual average population growth of 3.3% in the Manurewa electorate since 2013. Manurewa has the highest proportion of under five-year olds in the country (8.7%), the second-highest proportion of people in the 5-9 age group (9.1%) and the second-highest proportion of people in the 10-14 age group (7.9%). It also has among the lowest shares of any general electorate for all age groups above the age of 45.
The largest ethnic group in the electorate is Pacific Peoples (39.3%), followed by the Asian ethnic group (29.4%), the Maori ethnic group (24.5%), and the European ethnic group (23.1%). Nearly 11,000 people speak Samoan (13.5% of the electorate), the third-highest proportion in the country. While Christianity is the largest religious affiliation (45.8%), those affiliated with Hinduism (10.2%) and Islam (3.8%) are the second-highest and fourth-highest shares In New Zealand respectively.
Manurewa ranked number one for the share of households using a portable gas heater (11.9%). Over one-third (35.3%) of households stated their house was either always damp or sometimes damp. Manurewa had the highest proportion of people receiving Sole Parent Support (8.5%), and the second-highest unemployment rate (9.4%).

People
This section has a variety of information about people living in the electorate. Topics include population, ethnicity, religion, language, health, and iwi affiliation. The information comes from the 2018 Census, except for iwi affiliation. Information on iwi affiliation comes from the 2013 Census as this information is not available for 2018.
There is information on both Māori ethnicity and Māori descent as these are different concepts. Māori descent is based on ancestry and Māori ethnicity is based on cultural affiliation.

Housing
This section provides a range of information from the 2018 Census about homes and families in the electorate. It also has information about residential building consents issued.
The census distinguishes between dwellings, households, and families. A dwelling refers to the physical structure. A household is either one person who usually lives alone, or two or more people who usually live together. A family comprises a couple with or without children or one parent and their children.
There are two tables describing homeownership. They differ in measuring ownership at the individual or the household level. A household may own their dwelling but not all people within that household share in the ownership.

Work and incomes
This section includes information from the 2018 Census about work and income of people, households, and families. It also includes information about non-residential building consents issued.
Income is the total before-tax income of a person, household, or family in the 12 months ended 31 March 2018. Family and household income is derived by taking the income of all members aged 15 and over of the family or household. Income does not include Working for Families tax credits.
