This issue will include a 15c stamp bearing the imageof Mary Ingraham; a 25c stamp bearing the image ofGeorgianna Symonette; a 50c stamp bearing theimage of Mabel Walker; a 65c stamp bearing theimage of Eugenia Lockhart; a 70c, bearing the imageof Dame Alberta Isaacs and a 80c stamp bearing theimage of Dame Doris Johnson.

In the general election of 1949, Mary Ingraham’shusband Rufus was displaced. On his return fromcampaigning, he contributed his losing the election tothe fact that women were not yet able to vote. He feltthat most males who were eligible to vote wereinterested in only material things (primarily alcoholand cash), if one wanted to secure their vote. Thusthe idea of the suffrage movement came into being.She later became founder and president of themovement.

Mabel Walker stamp

Recognising the iniquities in voting rights, Mrs.Georgianna Symonette along with Mrs. MaryIngraham, Mrs. Mabel Walker and Mrs. EugeniaLockhart and other women started the Women’sSuffrage Movement. In order to sensitise thegovernment of the day that women wanted to vote Ms.Symonette and the other suffragettes toured the entirearchipelago and obtained 3,000 signatures.

Mrs. Mabel Walker was an activist for the SuffrageMovement in The Bahamas demonstrating with smallbands of women for the rights of women. Sheattended many Women Alliances conferences inEngland, Ireland, Africa and Italy.

Eugenia Lockhart met with the small group of womento seek the vote for women, she found herself at theforefront of the Women’s Suffrage Movement. She didnot seek self-aggrandisement or accolades.

Dame Alberta Isaacs stamp

Dissatisfied with the status quo of Women in TheBahamas Dame Albertha Isaacs and many of hercontemporaries joined a movement that became aforce to be reckoned with globally within the westernworld.

Dame Doris Johnson joined the Women’s SuffrageMovement after returning home from her studies atthe University of Toronto. She led a march to theHouse of Assembly during which time the womendemanded they be given the right to vote. Theirpetition was given in the Magistrate’s Court since UBPMembers of Parliament refused to be addressed bythe women in the House of Assembly.
