How do I install eVSM?

Installation with CD-ROMInsert CD in CD-ROM drive. After a few seconds, the installation wizard should start automatically.

If the installation wizard does not start up automatically, then please navigate to your CD-ROM drive in a Windows Explorer, and double-click the setup.exe file.

Installation via DownloadClick button to download installation ZIP file.

Extract (you can use WinZIP or PKZip unpack) the ZIP file contents to an empty temporary folder and click the setup.exe file to start the installation wizard.

How do I start eVSM?

If your macro security level is set to medium or high, you will see Macro

warning pop-ups. You can click Enable Macros and continue. Or see:

If your eVSM license has not yet been activated, or if you are running in Trial

mode, then a License Manager dialog will pop up. You may click Continue and

proceed to using eVSM. Or see:How to activate your license

How do I switch the macro messages off at start-up?

To run the eVSM Software, you must have Macros Enabled.

Macro Warning messages such as this are displayed when eVSM is started. To access eVSM functionality, you must click the Enable Macros button.

The macro warning messages can be switched off by setting the macro security level to Low. Follow the three steps shown on the right.

How do I register my eVSM license?

For registration you will need the following information ready:

1. Your name, company, phone, and E-mail address

2. Operating system version and Hardware ID#for your machine

3. Your CD# (this can be found on a label on your eVSM CD jewel case). If you did not receive your original eVSM software on a CD, then you can enter your Order# here. If you have neither number, please request your CD# by E-mailing [email protected]

You must register your eVSM license to receive your Activation Serial #. Without activation, your eVSM installation will run only for 15 days. To register, go to http://www.evsm.com/activate and enter your license profile information.

How do I enter my serial# to activate the software?

If you have purchased eVSM and registered it, you will receive your Activation Serial # via E-mail. If you do not receive this within 24 hours after registering, please contact us at [email protected].

To enter your Activation Serial #, click “Start>Programs>eVSM 2003>About eVSM…" and you will see the dialog below:

Enter your username and number, exactly as supplied to you via E-mail, then click Continue. Once your serial # has been accepted, you need to exit Visio and restart eVSM.

How can I check what version of eVSM I have?

Click “Start>Programs>eVSM 2003>About eVSM…" and you will see the dialog below:

While eVSM is running, you can also see the version number in the main stencil header bar.

How do I rename a Visio page?

Double-click on the page tab, and enter

Warning: Do not rename a drawing page once you have an Excel worksheet associated with the drawing. Renaming the drawing page will generate a new worksheet.

How to resize a page?

Hold down the CTRL key and move the cursor to the edge of the page. The cursor will turn into a double-headed arrow. Just grab the edge

and pull to required size.

Warning: Visio 2003 also allows you to rotate the whole page by grabbing any corner of the page. DO NOT use this

function, it often corrupts the Visio file.

Is there a limit to page name size?

We recommend keeping the page name as short as possible since the page name will appear in named variables which are automatically created in Excel when the Calculator is run.

There is also a hard limit of 25 characters.

Warning: Avoid using any characters which can disrupt Excel equations. Examples include:

How do I zoom in/out?

With the Ctrl + Shift keys held down, your cursor will turn into a magnifying glass.

In this magnifying glass mode you have the following controls available on your mouse.

How do I add icons to a stencil?

How to copy shapes from drawing to stencil...

First, the stencil must be in edit mode... How to copy shapes from one stencil to another...Select icons to copy in source stencil. Right mouse click on selection and pick the Copy command. Then in the target stencil, right mouse click on the stencil background, and pick the Paste command.

How do I modify a shape master?

Why cant I move more than 9 NVU’s attached to an activity?

Although all NVU datablocks are properly glued, when the process block is moved, only the first 9 NVU’s go with it, the rest are left behind.

This is a Visio limitation. The best workaround is to select the process block and all the NVU’s, then move them all as a collection.

Note: This limitation does not affect the eVSM Calculator.

How do parent child glue relationships work?

When two shapes are glued to each other, one acts as the parent and the other as the child. If the parent is moved, the child stays glued and follows the parent. If the child shape is moved, the glue breaks and the child comes away from the parent.

It is possible to modify the line-end properties in Visio to reverse the arrow, however, we recommend that you simply move both the head and the tail of the arrow to reverse it.

How can I manipulate text on a connectors?

Double-click the connector and enter text. With the arrow selected, open the Text formatting dialog box by clicking Format > Text... Jump to the Text Block tab, and set the Text Background color to white.

With the arrow selected, click the Text Block Tool in the toolbar.

Control handles will appear around the text block as shown above. These can be used to rotate, resize, or move the text block.

Is it OK to resize eVSM shapes?

In general you should avoid resizing eVSM shapes. If you do:

1. Your shapes will no longer fit to the grid2. The re-sized shapes will not fit to the standard eVSM shapes3. Your maps will look different from others making it harder for others to understand

There are times you may need to re-size some shapes. If you do, try and ensure that they still fit the grid.

How do I use Operation Tags?

The Operation Tag is used to specify which data goes to Excel and to control which row the data appears in the Excel table.

Just drag out an Operation Tag, glue it to any connection point on an activity. Once this is done, any data associated with the

activity will be synced with Excel

How do I control the Operation Tag numbering?Operation Tags are sequenced automatically when they are dropped on the drawing from the stencil.

The auto-sequencing is controlled via the the Tag Number Form

Can I add data outside of the red box in the excel spreadsheet?

You can add your own data anywhere outside the red box in Excel. However, if your map changes result in row/column deletion, then you could loose your data. A safe area therefore is the bottom right quadrant indicated below.

If you have used more then one unit type for a given name, then eVSM will require conversion factors between the different units. The Units Converter shape is used for this. Just place this anywhere on the drawing, no need to glue to anything. The conversion factors are then available in Excel as Name Variables. These can be inserted into Excel equations via the commands shown below.

Why isn’t a number I entered in excel not appearing on the map?

In order to export a cell value from excel to the VSM drawing, excel has to see it as a formula. You must use the “=” sign in the cell for excel to see it as a formula.

Instead of the normal datablocks, use these “Menuset” versions. When these are

dropped on a drawing, the drawing is scanned for names and units currently in use. The right mouse menus of the new

datablock is then populated only with these items.

How do I group shapes together?

First, select shapes to group

Warning: The only time grouping is required in eVSM, is when using the Combo Maker tool. At other times, please do not Group eVSM shapes since the eVSM Calculator does not decipher data inside a group.

When and How do I use the Combo Maker?What is the Combo Maker and when should you use it

If a collection of shapes is dragged into the stencil without using the combo maker, Visio does create an icon in the stencil, but this has two problems associated with it. The shapes get automatically grouped, and the gluing is lost.

The Combo Maker tool fixes these two problems.

So, if you are adding a single shape to the stencil, then the Combo Maker is not necessary. For a collection of shapes, the Combo Maker should be used.

1. Use the standard chart wizard to create a chart in Excel.

2. Copy the chart in Excel
