Spring is in the air and the trees are starting to bud. And with our recent unseasonably warm weather comes the desire to play in the yard, plant a tree or shrub, or start looking at your garden. But after a tough winter and in a diffi cult economy, many people are asking what can be done to give their home landscape a lot of impact without pushing the bud-get? With limited resources, we need to focus our energies and work on areas that are going to give us the biggest bang for our dollar.

To do this, identify your focal points, and emphasize these spaces with a spe-cial tree or plantings. The areas that you look at every day will give you the most pleasure and impact. These would be the areas you see as you leave the front door, walk to your car, sit on the patio or look out the kitchen window. Where ever these spaces focus your attention, this is where you want to focus your attention and energies in the landscape.

Start with the entry beds. Remove overgrown plants or trim back so they don’t obscure or crowd the path. This simple chore will pay off big. Use small spots of color adjacent to the entry, park-ing or patio areas where they are most seen. Primrose, geraniums, heuchera,

and other low plants with bright colors of fl owers and foliage will attract your attention away from the less attractive areas.

Use a single tree or shrub with multi seasonal displays at the center of your fo-cal points. A Korean dogwood (cornus kousa), or False Camellia tree (stewartia pseudocamellia), with their bright spring foliage, summer fl ower, bright fall color and colorful winter form will delight you all year long. Shrubs for smaller spaces with similar features, such as the Exbury Mollis Azaleas, or Mountain Laurels (kalmia latifolia), will also pay off with multiple displays all year. Since there are thousands of appropriate plants that will work in our climate, ask your local nursery for suggestions to use for your exposure and size of space. Remember to ask for plants with multiple seasonal displays appropriate for a focal place.

Once the focal points are taken care of, the back ground areas and supplemental areas can be addressed as time and re-sources allow. Sometimes just a single plant can make your garden memorable. When it is set in a focal point, it will give you the maximum effect and even lessen or redirect your attention away from the areas still needing attention.

For breakfast this morning, I ate oatmeal even though I wanted a three-million calorie doughnut. I thought long and hard about the indulgence, but I reminded myself that I’m a per-sonal trainer, and I have an example to set. However, I really WANTED that doughnut because after training several clients this morning, I sat down to work on my taxes, and I got really, really stressed out. Don’t get me wrong—I have it all under control and am fairly organized, but dealing withnumbers and receipts while confi ned to a desk puts me in a funky mood. When I’m stuck at a desk, my neck and shoulders get tense and achy, and I then, for some reason, I crave sugar.

I assume that many of you spend much of your time at work and at home at a desk. Did you know that Americans who spend much of their day at desks suffer from more neck and back pain than those Americans who have more active jobs? This is because folks who sit at desks tend to have poor posture, and maintain this posture all day long. While sitting, most people’s shoulders roll forward, and their necks are angled forward, especially if the spend a lot of time at a computer. This position

causes the shoulder and neck muscles to stretch, and the chest muscles to either atrophy and/or shorten.

At home, you can do a lot to improve your posture while sitting at your desk or in a chair. Practice rolling your shoulders backward while fl exing the muscles between your shoulder blades. Try to complete some while watch-ing the evening news. Another simple activity to do to is to stretch your neck muscles by slowly rolling your head to one side until your right ear almost touches your right shoulder, stop, and then roll the opposite direction. Lastly, while sitting in your chair at home or at work, try your best to sit up straight with your shoulders down and back, lightly squeezing your shoulder blades together.

Doing these simple exercises will help you stretch and strengthen muscles that often get neglected, and will help you improve your posture, as well! Proper posture is a great way to strengthen and improve muscle control, and may help improvecertain neck and back pains, as well. I encourage you to try these easy exercises when sitting to fi le your fam-ily’s taxes, in the car, or while watching TV at home.

For anyone who’s considering getting a dog, please do your research fi rst. Con-sider the care and maintenance involved in the breed you are wanting and whether or not you are able and willing to provide the needed care, training, required atten-tion and grooming.

If you cannot or will not be able to meet the needs of the dog, perhaps an-other more maintenance-free pet would be more suited for you, ie, a goldfi sh or a pet rock.

If you already have a dog that needs grooming, brush it regularly. If it’s a coat that becomes matted, this will keep most of the matts away. If it becomes too mat-ted, don’t try to cut them out yourself un-less you know how to do it right. Take it to a groomer.

Try this: pinch two pieces of skin close to one another on your neck, now take those pieces of skin and pull them tight together. How does that feel? Now imag-ine walking around with your skin pulled tight like that. That’s what a matt does and feels like to a dog, sometimes mul-tiplied several times. This doesn’t allow the skin to breathe and can cause rashes and even tear the skin.

Ever let your hair go nearly a year before washing or brushing it and then spend six hours trying to detangle the mess without trimming out the tangles. That’s what happens to a long haired dog

that’s not maintained and it doesn’t feel any better (probably worse) to the dog who has a groomer tugging and pulling at mats that an owner doesn’t want, to have a haircut.

Now try this: Pound nails into your shoe so that they stick up into your foot, then walk around on them. Not comfort-able? That’s how it feels to a dog that has toenails curled around and digging into the pads of their feet. Their toes will also become splayed apart and they will get painful joint problems throughout their legs.

Ever get fl eas in your hair? Now imag-ine yourself covered from head to toe with fl eas biting at you. Does it sound pleasant? It’s not to a dog either, in fact it causes rashes, sores and infections and disease.

In my profession as a dog resort owner and dog groomer, these are just examples of situations I’ve encountered, from dogs in dire need of care from owners being too busy, not thinking about it, work and chasing their kids around. While these may be legit excuses, please keep in mind that your dog may be enduring daily suf-fering because of it. If you love your dog, the best way to show it is by helping him to live a long, happy and healthy life and he in turn will be your best friend for the duration of his life.
