I look forward to seeing members, former members, family, and friends come home for the day. Speaking for the service is a former member now actively serving in ministry, Dale Long. He is not only ministering to youth at a sister church, but Dale is actively ministering in law enforcement. If you’re wondering how I can consider law enforcement a ministry, you need to read Romans 13. In the late 1990’s, the late Dr. John R. W. Stott visited Savannah where he led in some conferences in Christ Church in downtown Savannah. After one of the sessions, there was a Q & A time. One of the questions was this, “Of all the books you have written, which do you think is the most significant.” Dr. Stott did not hesitate one moment. He responded, “The Cross of Christ, for the cross of Jesus Christ is the central point of the Christian faith.” 1 Peter 3:18 states, “For Christ also die for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit.” Salvation is all about the cross. Never forget that! Never allow anything to draw your focus away from this wonderful, eternal truth! It is one of the foundational teachings of the Christian faith. “Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and He was buried, and He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures.” (1Corinthians 15:3-4) It is important for us to remember this, for the religions of the world teach otherwise. It is something of human nature that thinks that somehow we can earn our way into favor with God. I find that many in our community who are not believers think they can work their way into God’s graces and be given life in heaven. After reading about some trends happening in American churches, it is a must that we get this straight once and for all. Salvation does not come by our good works no matter how good they seem to be to us! It is impossible to atone for our sins through good works! Ephesians 2:8-9 - For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. Titus 3:5 - Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us. Faith in our works will get us nowhere. Faith in the work of Jesus on the cross is the only way to eternal life. Pastors and teachers, constantly remind your people of these truths. HOMECOMING Sunday is October 9.

He responded, “The Cross of Christ, for the cross of Jesus Christ is the central point of the Christian faith.”

1 Peter 3:18 states, “For Christ also die for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit.”

Salvation is all about the cross. Never forget that! Never allow anything to draw your focus away from this wonderful, eternal truth! It is one of the foundational teachings of the Christian faith. “Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and He was buried, and He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures.” (1Corinthians 15:3-4)

It is important for us to remember this, for the religions of the world teach otherwise.

Let us never boast in anything except the cross of Jesus Christ.

“The gem cannot be polished without friction, nor man perfected without trials.” —Origin uncertain

Always Valued

When Paul talks about treasure in clay jars (2 Corinthians 4:6-9), he’s referring to the gospel message. The apostle compares the human

carriers of the treasure, including himself, to breakable vessels that aren’t impervious to outside influences and can fail. But that causes the

carriers to rely on God’s strength when facing afflictions.

Part of the usefulness of the image — and Paul knows this — is that broken clay jars were used as blank “pages” for writing letters,

business receipts, invitations to meals and weddings, and so on. He emphasizes that even when we’re broken, we’re useful in God’s

kingdom. When we feel defeated by failure, Jesus still considers us valuable.

It’s intriguing to think of people in Bible times

experiencing the same cycle of seasons we do.

Which of these books doesn’t mention autumn?

C. Proverbs

D. Jude

Follow His Example

Become Aware of who you are.

Have you looked in the mirror lately? Not at the surface eyes, skin and shape, but a

good long look at the core of your existence. Does the reflection of your soul reveal

someone bent on self-control or a person humbly following the example of her savior?

October’s focus for By All Means is Global Hunger Relief. Please bring in non perishable

items to the church for local distribution.

The WMU Bible Study Group is sponsoring a forty days of prayer focus on our church

and our nation through November. There will meetings each Sunday afternoon at 4:45

to pray together as part of this initiative.

Maple is hosting a Community Outreach event on October 29 from 3:00pm to 6:00pm.

Please encourage all of your friends and neighbors to attend—whether they are

currently member at Maple or not. There will be games, food, and lots of fun for

everyone in the family. If you can help out ahead of time by dropping off some candy

and cookies for the big event, there is a box outside the office. Please contact Cheryl or

Julia if you can help with the event.

Mrs. Allsbrook was the WMU director and the Sunday School

Teacher for the Love class here at Maple. She was a friend to

everyone, and encouraged her fellow members to serve where

they were able. Her children Ragsdale, Neil, Sarah, Ginnie and

Linnie were encouraged to be involved in missions and in the

church. We still see her loving influence here at Maple every

day.

Tribute to a True Prayer Warrior

Many of you may remember Ruth Fisher. It was her and her daughter's

home our church worked on a few years ago when we partnered with

Appalachian Outreach in Jefferson City, Tennessee.

Ruth and I have kept in touch since we left, and I even had the pleasure of

taking Pam Clark to meet her on a later mission trip to Jefferson City. We

had the most wonderful visit, as short as it was. Ruth stole my heart from

the moment I met her.

What many of you who receive this Newsletter may not know, is that Ruth

has been confined to a hospital bed for quite a few years. However. If you

were to close your eyes, having never met her, you would never know she

has been bedridden for so long. That is because of the tremendous joy she

has in her soul.

But it’s not just the joy that comes from her soul, nor is it because of her

beautiful voice when she sings. It’s because of her prayer life. I spoke with

her a few days ago, and she shared with me that so many had passed

away since we last talked; her cousin, the last person from her graduating

class and others. She said she was asked how she could have so much joy

in her life being bound to a bed for this long, and not be bitter. She said

her answer was because she can still talk to God.

She said she can lay in her bed and look out the window, and if she sees

just one bird, she thanks God for that beauty He revealed. She went on to

tell me how she prays for our church and named the many who blessed

her by going beyond what her and Beth could have ever dreamed of. She

said that she prays constantly from that bed. We talked about the trouble

our country is in, and how we need to pray for God’s people to return to

Him.

If I was to think of someone who had a balanced prayer life, I would have

to say, hands down, it is Ruth Fisher. She has told me that she has no time

to feel sorry for herself because God has laid a lot on her to pray about

and so many to pray for.

Personally, knowing someone like Ruth Fisher, shows me just how much

better I could be in my own prayer life. It is easy to pray for those we know and love, but the real test is being able to pray for our enemies.

Somehow I just don’t believe Ruth ever struggled with this dilemma.

Jude 20-21

But you beloved ,building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit keep yourselves in the love, waiting anxiously for the

mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to eternal life.
