Provide Feedback on the Unified Land Use CodeAfter four years of community input and hard work, the City of Littleton is reaching the next major milestone for Envision Littleton 2040 with the release of the Unified Land Use Code (ULUC) draft.

The ULUC is the framework that will guide land use and zoning for the future. With the release of the draft, residents, businesses, and stakeholders are invited to review and comment through July 30.

With each milestone for Envision Littleton, the city has always paused, released a draft, and actively asked the community to check the city’s work. Once again, Littleton has a draft from Kendig Keast Consultants that staff,

elected and appointed officials, and the community need to check to ensure the customized land use and zoning code meets the needs and goals of Littleton.

Instructions on how to leave comments on the draft ULUC are available at EnvisionLittleton.org.

Review the steps and access the draft ULUC at the bottom of the instruction page.

About Project-Based Rental Assistance (PBRA)One of the programs SMHO utilizes to make rent more affordable is called Project-Based Rental Assistance (PBRA). PBRA provides critical affordable housing stock to lower-income families across the country. This type of rental assistance allows tenants to live in an affordable unit and pay rent based upon their income, which is 30 percent of monthly adjusted gross income. This happens when a private for-profit or non-profit owner (such as SMHO) enters into a contract with HUD to provide affordable units. PBRA is tied to particular units, and does not travel with individual tenants. Waitlists are used to fill vacancies. SMHO has four PBRA properties: Amity Plaza, Alyson Court, Bradley House, and John Newey.

Who is Helped by Project-Based Rental Assistance (PBRA)?

Rent and Utility Assistance OptionsThe CDC moratorium on evictions will end on July 31, 2021, as the final 30-day extension was recently announced. Now’s the time to prepare if you need help paying your rent or utilities. Arapahoe County has a Rent, Mortgage, and Utility program that may be able to help.

The goal of this program is to keep families in their homes with the heat/ac and lights on. This assistance program helps to alleviate short-term financial stress on housing needs, so that families can focus resources on other basic and critical needs.

To explore this option, please call (303) 738-7891 or email [email protected]. One of their team members will assist you in pre-screening for eligibility and application.

Partner Programs - Additional Opportunities

Through partnerships, additional programs are available for possible housing assistance. Please contact the following providers for more information on these programs as they are not administered by Arapahoe County:

Family Promise: Short-term rental assistance for families to transition into permanent housing they are able to maintain on their own. Households must income-qualify and meet all eligibility requirements. Learn more at www.familypromiseofgreaterdenver.org/.

Aurora Housing Authority: Short-term rental assistance to place families experiencing homelessness into an affordable housing unit and provide support and resources to work toward long-term stability. Households must income-qualify and meet all eligibility requirements. Contact Aurora Housing Authority.

The warm summer months are here! Along with the intense, mile-high sun that rains down on our state most every day. But there are a variety of ways to keep your cool without air conditioning. And remember, moving air is cooler than still air.

1. Keep your blinds closed. As simple as this tip may seem, Family Handyman notes that up to 30 percent of unwanted heat comes from your windows, and utilizing shades, curtains and the like can save you up to 7 percent on bills and lower indoor temperatures by up to 20 degrees. In other words, closing the blinds essentially prevents your home from becoming a miniature greenhouse, which is especially the case with south- and west-facing windows.

2. Create a faux A.C. Not even an air conditioner can give off a faux sea breeze, but this simple trick can. Fill a mixing bowl with ice (or something equally cold, like an ice pack) and position it at an angle in front of a large fan so the air whips off the ice in an extra-chilled, extra-misty state. It’s magic!

3. Set your ceiling fans to rotate counter-clockwise. You may not realize that your ceiling fan needs to be adjusted seasonally. Set to run counter-clockwise in the summer at a higher speed, the fan’s airflow will create a wind-chill breeze effect that will make you and your guests feel cooler.

4. Swap your sheets. Not only does seasonally switching your bedding freshen up a room, but it’s also a great way to keep cool. Cotton is a smarter move this time of year as it breathes easier and stays cooler.

5. Turn on your bathroom fans. Or the exhaust fan in your kitchen, for that matter. Both pull the hot air that rises after you cook or take a steamy shower out of your house or apartment.

6. Let the cool air in. Evening and early morning hours offer cooler temperatures, which can help reduce the inside air temp. Turn on fans to create a cross-breeze. Just be sure to close the windows and blinds before things get too hot in the morning.

7. Stay Hydrated. When you’re hot and flushed, hydrating yourself is the first and foremost step to cooling down, said Wendell Porter, a senior lecturer in agricultural and biological engineering at the University of Florida. The temperature of the water doesn’t matter since your body will heat it, he added. If your body is suffering from the heat and needs to cool itself, it can’t do that without enough moisture, since the body cools itself by sweating.

8. Take a cold shower. Taking a cold shower or bath helps cool your body by lowering your core temperature.
