AMERICAN SNIPER: THE IMAX EXPERIENCENow Showing through January 29, 2015From director Clint Eastwood comes American Sniper, opening January 15, 2015, with special showings at 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. at the AutoNation IMAX Theater. American Sniper stars Bradley Cooper as Chris Kyle, the most lethal sniper in U.S. military history. But there was much more to him than his skill as a sharpshooter.

U.S. Navy SEAL Chris Kyle is sent to Iraq with only one mission: to protect his brothers-in-arms. His pinpoint accuracy saves countless lives on the battlefield and, as stories of his courageous exploits spread, he earns the nickname "Legend." However, his reputation is also growing behind enemy lines, putting a price on his head and making him a prime target of insurgents. He is also facing a different kind of battle on the home front: striving to be a good husband and father from halfway around the world.

Despite the danger, as well as the toll on his family at home, Chris serves through four harrowing tours of duty in Iraq, personifying the SEAL creed to "leave no man behind." But upon returning to his wife, Taya Renae Kyle (Sienna Miller), and kids, Chris finds that it is the war he can’t leave behind.

A two-time Oscar nominee for his work in Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle, Cooper heads the cast, which also includes Sienna Miller (HBO’s The Girl), Jake McDorman, Luke Grimes, Navid Negahban and Keir O’Donnell.

Oscar-winning filmmaker Clint Eastwood (Million Dollar Baby, Unforgiven) is directing American Sniper from a screenplay written by Jason Hall, based on the book by Chris Kyle, with Scott McEwan and Jim DeFelice. The autobiography was a runaway bestseller, spending 18 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list, 13 of those at number one.

From the streets of Chicago to far flung galaxies whirling through space, “Jupiter Ascending” is written and directed by the Wachowskis. Award-winning producer Grant Hill, with whom they have collaborated since “The Matrix” Trilogy, is producing, together with Lana Wachowski and Andy Wachowski. HUMPBACK WHALES 3DFebruary 13, 2015 through January 31, 2016The Ocean’s Humpback whales have inspired a 3D giant screen film that will premiere in

Page 5: home.mods.orghome.mods.org/press/PR docs/Calendar of Events 1 22 …  · Web viewcourage, of insight and revelation, a journey to discover and understand a new and fascinating natural

international theatres. Humpback Whales will take audiences to the underwater world, to the faraway places where Humpbacks live and thrive.  From the clear turquoise waters of the South Pacific to Africa, Hawaii and Alaska, this 40-minute ocean adventure will reveal what we know about this giant mammal and what mysteries scientists are determined to solve.

The fifty-foot whales will appear life-size on the giant screen.  Audiences will swim alongside them, and be entertained by their high-spirited, full body acrobatics as the whales leap, twirl, lunge and splash their way onto the giant screen.  Using the magic of computer graphics, viewers will become like the fabled Jonah – and be swallowed by a whale in a fun, water-churning roller-coaster ride into the giant’s maw.  We’ll see mothers caring for their young and listen to males sing a song that fills the theatre.  Because international laws now ban whaling, more than 100,000 Humpbacks live and travel off our shores.  They play, they need a good meal, they care for their young and breathe the air we breathe.  And Humpback Whales will sing their song for audiences everywhere.

Brain: The World Inside Your HeadOn display through May 3, 2015What’s more important than your brain? Now you can take a look inside this quintessential organic computer that is responsible for every thought, every motion and every response your body makes. BRAIN employs innovative special effects, 3-D reproductions, virtual reality, hands-on learning activities and interactive technology to delve into the inner workings of the brain, including its processes, potentials and mysteries.

Page 6: home.mods.orghome.mods.org/press/PR docs/Calendar of Events 1 22 …  · Web viewcourage, of insight and revelation, a journey to discover and understand a new and fascinating natural

Upon entry into the exhibit, you will walk through a shimmering tunnel — the midst of a functioning human brain. You will see flashing fiber-optics that illuminates networks of neurons firing and communicating inside the brain. From this dynamic beginning, BRAIN invites you deeper into the brain to discover its basic workings. You can explore the revitalizing nature of sleep and learn about the latest brain imaging technologies, then study the re-created skull of Phineas Gage — a man who survived after his brain was pierced by a metal rod — as you trace the evolution of scientists’ understanding of the brain’s physiology.

You also will discover the reality of brain disorders, injuries and irregularities, and learn more about conditions such as Alzheimer’s, depression and addiction as you explore the relationship between depression and creativity, how drugs work in the brain, and the nature of pain. Finally, you will get a glimpse of the future of brain treatments in the new era of genome mapping and molecular medicine.

BRAIN is made possible by Pfizer Inc. and produced by Clear Channel Entertainment of San Antonio, in collaboration with the National Institutes of Health. The exhibit is sponsored locally by Leo Goodwin Foundation.

Great Balls of Fire: Comets, Asteroids and MeteorsOpens October 1, 2015 through January 4, 2016

The Space Science Institute’s National Center for Interactive Learning, with funding from the National Science Foundation and NASA, has developed a national traveling exhibition program called Great Balls of Fire: Comets, Asteroids, and Meteors.

The threat of a catastrophic impact from an asteroid or comet is a staple of popular culture. If there was a dinosaur killer in Earth’s past, is there a human killer in our future? What are the chances and how do we assess the risks? For that matter, what are asteroids, comets, and

Page 7: home.mods.orghome.mods.org/press/PR docs/Calendar of Events 1 22 …  · Web viewcourage, of insight and revelation, a journey to discover and understand a new and fascinating natural

meteorites, and where do they come from?

While Asteroids and comets are popular subjects for movies like Armageddon and Deep Impact, they are also playing their own starring roles in NASA research. In 2001, NASA’s NEAR Shoemaker spacecraft dramatically landed on the asteroid Eros. In 2005, NASA’s Deep Impact’s probe collided with Tempel 1, exploring beneath the comet’s surface. In 2007, NASA launched the Dawn spacecraft to the Main Asteroid Belt. With all this interest, asteroids and comets are compelling subjects for an exhibition.

The AutoNation® IMAX 3D Theater, owned and operated by the Museum of Discovery and Science, opened in 1992. The 300-seat theater is a showcase of state-of-the-art motion picture technology. In September 2014, the AutoNation® IMAX 3D Theater underwent an extensive renovation including a new giant screen (60 ft. x 80 ft.), new luxury seats, new powerful sound system and the addition of a digital projection system to complement our 15/70 film projector. Our new dual IMAX projection system allows us to show both digital and 15/70 IMAX films and offer a more consistent flow of new Hollywood films in addition to our classic documentaries. The IMAX Experience® is an unparalleled fusion of sight and sound. Audiences will enjoy five-story high images of unsurpassed brilliance and clarity as they’re immersed in 32,000 watts of digital surround sound broadcast through 56 speakers. And the special geometry of our theater makes you feel as though you're immersed in the action. You're just not seeing the movie --- you're part of it. Both 2D and 3D films are shown in the theater and 3D films are viewed using special IMAX® 3D glasses. The AutoNation® IMAX 3D Theater is home to the BIGGEST screen in South Florida and is one of only three Certified Giant Screen® theaters in Florida as certified by the Giant Screen Cinema Association.
