1. Pilot Overview

This handbook describes the satellite communication (SATCOM) andthe operation of the Honeywell/Racal Multi-Channel System (MCS)6000 satellite communications equipment as installed on theA320/A330/A340 aircraft.

The pilot guide contains the information required to operate the MCSSATCOM. The guide contains details sufficient to answer the majorityof questions generated through system use.

The following SATCOM options are covered:

D Two channels are reserved for flight deck use

D The aircraft system automatically logs on to the proper ground earthstation (GES) station

D Manual handover is not necessary.

The crew can preempt passenger calls to place higher priority calls orthey can queue flight deck calls for future placement when a channelis available. In all cases, two voice channel selections are displayed onthe SATCOM MAIN MENU page.

This guide builds on the basic knowledge of the A320/A330/A340Multi-Function Control Display Unit (MCDU) operation.

The reader should know that every effort has been made to ensure theaccuracy of published information. Questions about current systemoperation and configurations should be directed to HoneywellA320/A330/A340 Product Support or Honeywell Pilots Group.

This guide is intended as a guide and does not supersede any Airbus,Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), or airline--approvedprocedures. It is written for system familiarization only.

SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

The SATCOM system provides both data and voice communications.(See Figure 2--1 for flight deck configuration.) SATCOMcommunications are possible when the following three parts areconnected together with normal telephone equipment:

D Aircraft earth station (AES) -- The aircraft--based SATCOM system

D Ground earth station (GES) -- The ground--based SATCOMsystem

D Space segment.

Connection of AES to GES via the satellite is controlled by the AES.This process is called logon. Logon is done automatically using airlineperformances, or manually through inputs to the MCDU.

One or two SATCOM systems can be installed in an aircraft. EachSATCOM system has multiple channels for communications. (For thenumber of SATCOM channels, refer to the airline operations manual.)One channel is reserved for communications control. The controlchannel also has aircraft communication addressing and reportingsystem (ACARS) datalink communications. Twochannels areavailablefor flight deck voice use. The remaining channels are for passengervoice use.

SATCOM recognizes the four levels of voice communications prioritydescribed below:

D Priority 1/EMERGENCY -- This level is reserved for emergencyand distress calls only. Alarms are initiated at the GESs and airlineoperations are notified of an aircraft in distress when anEMERGENCY call is received.

D Priority 2/SAFETY -- This level is normally used for regulatory andflight safety calls.

D Priority 3/NON SAFETY -- This level is normally used foroperational, non-safety, or flight calls.

D Priority 4/PUBLIC -- This level is reserved for cabin passengervoice calls.

The priority of a call determines the accessibility to satellite and GESresources. Higher priority calls can preempt existing calls on thesatellite/GES system.

Page 11: Honeywell MCS Satcom

System Guide

Use or disclosure of the information on this page is subject to the restrictions on the title page of this document.

NON SAFETY communications include cabin provisioning, seatassignments, passenger travel arrangements, and baggage/parceltracing.

PUBLIC communications are reserved for passenger calls and caninclude:

D Voice calls

D Facsimile transmissions

D Personal computer modem transmissions.

SATCOM equipment can automatically log onto an appropriate GES.As the aircraft flies out of coverage for a satellite or satellite spot beam, the system automatically hands over control to the next proper satelliteor spot beam.

SATCOM data service is momentarily interrupted during a handover.Data service automatically resumes following a successful handover. An automatic handover is not initiated when voice calls or datatransmissions are in progress.

Voice capability is determined by the elevation of the four geostationarysatellites above thehorizonwith relation to theaircraft location. With thesatellite servicing the aircraft near the horizon or with the aircraft in abank, fewer voice channels can be available. Channel availability isdisplayed on the MCDU channel status display page.

For proper voice operation, SATCOM requires information from a fullyfunctional inertial reference system (IRS).

SATCOM maintenance information is accessible through thecommunications management computer (CMC).

FLIGHT DECK CONFIGURATION

The MCS SATCOM consists of a satellite transceiver system, threeMCDUs (installed in the left, right, and aft panels of the forwardelectronic control panel), and three audio selector panels. All threeMCDUs can be used for SATCOM independently and simultaneously.Figure 2--1 shows the flight deck.

SYSTEM INTERFACES

Figure 2--3 shows the airborne equipment required for a singleSATCOM system to perform ground communication using the satellitenetwork. The satellite data unit (SDU) controls all communication withthe ground. The SDU controls the SATCOM system which can beadapted for use through the owner requirements tables (ORT). Anadditional three channels, whichare dedicated to cabin/passenger use,are provided by the radio frequency unit (RFU) (if installed). Thehigh-power amplifier (HPA) amplifies the air-to-ground signals that aretransmitted by thehigh-gain antenna (HGA), intermediate gain antenna(IGA) or low-gain antenna (LGA) equipment. The ground-to-air signalsare input to the SDU as received by the HGA/IGA/LGA system(s).

Airborne Satellite EquipmentFigure 2--3

The IRS provides the system SDU with aircraft attitude and positioninformation that is required to steer theHGA and/or LGA. Log--on usingan HGA or IGA for satellite voice cannot be done without precise IRSposition information. The MCS SATCOM system can provide data linksatellite communication using LGA equipment that does not requireIRS information.

MCDUs are used for pilot control and to initiate air-to-ground calls.

The data loader interface is used to upload the ORT and to downloadsystem logged information.

The scratchpad is used to enter data and display system-generatedmessages:

D Data Entry -- The pilot pushes the alphanumeric keys to enter themon the scratchpad. After a valid entry is made, the pilot pushes theappropriate line select key adjacent to the field in which data is to beentered. The system checks the scratchpad data for format andacceptability (out-of-range, entry not allowed into the field, etc.). Ifthe data is correct, the systementers that data into the selected fieldon the display. If the data is incorrect, the system rejects the entryand issues a scratchpad message.

D Scratchpad Messages -- If, after trying to enter data as describedabove, the system determines that the entry does not conform toformat or acceptability requirements, the system issues ascratchpadmessage that prompts the pilot for the correct data. Theuser can clear a scratchpad message by pushing the CLR (clear)key or by overwriting data into the scratchpad to replace themessage.

Message Text Meaning

NOT ALLOWED This message is issued whenever thefollowing occur:D An LS (line select) key is pushedadjacent to a blank field.

3. Flight Operations

The satellite communications equipment provides air-groundcommunication by both cockpit voice and data transmissions, that is,ACARS/data link. Before performing ground communication, thesatellite equipment must have completed the LOG-ON process. TheIRS must be aligned before the SATCOM system can log on.

System LOG-ON is essential for satellite communication and it is doneone of two ways:

D Automatically, requiring no pilot action (this is the normal condition)based on ORT (owner requirements table) parameter selection.

D Manually. (Refer to Table 3--1.)

When aircraft power is applied, the SATCOM equipment establishes acommunication link with a ground-earth station (GES) as specified bythe airline in the ORT SATCOM data base. A manual log-on to apilot--selected GES can be performed from the SATCOM LOG--ONSTATUS page on the MCDU.

NOTE: The MCS SATCOM has been demonstrated for use as asupplement to other required high frequency (HF) and VHFcommunications systems with no restrictions. Use for airtraffic control (ATC) communications requires operationalapproval.

A maximum of two independent channels are available in the cockpit.Either can be used independently.

GROUND-TO-AIR CALLS

The select calling (SELCAL) chime annunciates incoming calls to theaircrew (except during flight phase inhibition), and on the audio controlpanel (ACP) by flashing of the CALL legend on the SAT1 (SAT2)transmission pushbutton. To complete the headset call, select theSATCOM channel SAT1 (SAT2) on the ACP by pushing the SAT1(SAT2) button on the ACP (steady GREEN).

NOTE: Pushing the RESET pushbutton switch on the ACP can stopthe chime and switch-off the CALL legend.

If the priority of the call is higher than 4, SATCOM ALERT is displayedon the electronic centralized aircraft monitoring (ECAM) in green, andGROUND TO AIR CALL is displayed on the SATCOM main menuunder the called channel (SAT1 or SAT2) with the associated priority.

HOLD FUNCTION

When a SATCOM call is established (after air-to-ground call orground-to-air call setup) on SAT1 (SAT2), selecting another radiocommunication (HF or VHF) switches the audio management unit(AMU) audio transmission from the satellite data unit (SDU) to anotherradio (HF or VHF) switch.

To return to the SATCOM call, reselect the SATCOM channel ordeselect the same radio HF or VHF on the ACP. The GREEN lines ofthe selected radio (HF or VHF) button switch off and the GREEN linesof SAT1 (SAT2) transmission button turns on steadily. The AMUenables audio transmission to the SDU.

AIR-TO-GROUND CALLS

Calls are initiated from the cockpit by manually inserting or selecting atelephone number to be dialed from the directories on the SATCOMMCDU display pages.

If the SATCOM call is already established, or the SATCOM call isestablished but on hold, the call can be terminated two ways:

D The SAT light goes off when the ground party hangs up

D The pilot ends the call by pushing the SAT 1--2 button when theSATCOM call is connected.

EQUIPMENT ANNUNCIATION

TheMCSSATCOMequipment that is available to performcockpit voicecommunication with the ground is displayed on the SAT MCDU pages.

SATELLITE DATA LINK/ACARS COMMUNICATIONS

Position report datamay be provided to the ACARS or CMUequipmentwhich passes the information intended for the satellite link transmissionto the SATCOM equipment. The SATCOM system transmits thisinformation to the logged-on GES via satellite. The GES sends thisinformation to the associated ground user.

NOTE: The MCS SATCOM demonstrates the integrity criteriarequired for non-essential communications equipment.

CALL PRIORITY

The SATCOM equipment provides four priority levels of air--to--groundand ground--to--air telephone communications:

Priority 1/ PRI 1 is reserved for emergency and distress calls only.

WARNING

DO NOT USE PRIORITY 1/“EMERGENCY” FOR CALLS EXCEPTFOR EMERGENCY AIRCRAFT COMMUNICATIONS. THISPRIORITY ACTIVATES ALARMS IN GROUND EARTH STATIONSALL AROUND THE WORLD. DO NOT USE PRIORITY 1/“EMERGENCY” EXCEPT IN BONA FIDE EMERGENCIES!

Priority 2 / PRI 2 is reserved for regulatory and flight safety calls.

Priority 3 / PRI 3 is reserved for non-flight safety calls.

Priority 4 / PRI 4 is reserved for passenger correspondence calls.

D Priority 1 and 2 calls -- These calls are only placed to and receivedfrom air traffic services (ATS), which includes ATCand related flightservices. Aeronautical operational control (AOC) likeATC is asafetyservice defined in International Civil Aviation Organization: Agencyof theUN (ICAO) Annex 6, Part I, which exercises authority over theinitiation, continuation, diversion, or termination of a flight in theinterest of the safety of aircraft, and the regularity/efficiency of aflight. Priority 2 is used only for the following AOC functions:

— To directly accommodate operational flight requirements

— To interface with the airline’s departments, that is, flightoperations, engineering, maintenance, and/or scheduling inexercising or coordinating accurate and timely informationexchange between the aircraft and the ground user(s).

D Priority 3 calls -- These calls are for aeronautical administrativecommunications (AAC). This level is for non-safety-related servicethat includes cabin provisioning and inventory, seat assignments, passenger travel arrangements, and baggage and parcel tracing.AAC calls are placed/received at priority 3.

D Priority 4 calls -- These calls are for aeronautical passengercommunications (APC). This priority must be used fornon-safety-related service that includes voice, facsimile, and PCmodem telephone service for crew and passengers to connectwith ground-based networks worldwide.
