The first day of schoolcan create butterflies in thestomachs of parents andchildren. However, following a few tips canalleviate feelings ofnervousness. August and Septemberare prime months for thereturn to school. Whetherthis is a child’s first timeentering the classroom orhe or she has done theback-to-school thingmultiple times, it’s notuncommon for feelings ofanxiety to arise. There areexpectations andunknowns with each andevery school year for boththe students and theirparents. Pivotal years, suchas kindergarten, 6th gradefor middle-schoolers, fresh -man year of high school, orthe start of college cancreate added levels of jittersbecause these years markentry to a new school ornew routine. But keeping afew pointers in mind canalleviate some of the fears.•Keep a routine. It isimportant for parents andstudents to get back intothe school swing of thingsa few weeks prior to thefirst day of school. Startsetting alarm clocks for thehour at which kids willhave to awaken, and get

them in the habit of risingfrom bed and starting theday. Try to schedulesomething to do each daythat will be the inspirationfor getting moving, such asschool supply shopping.Take the carpool route toschool, or find out wherethe school bus stop may be.These practice sessionswill enable the family todecide how much time isneeded to get ready in themorning and makechanges accordingly.•Mention school fre-quently. Begin talkingabout school and what isnecessary to prepare. Besure to talk about the moreenjoyable aspects ofschool, such as seeingfriends, participating ine x t r a c u r r i c u l a r activities and even thechange of scenery schoolprovides. Mention thethings your child may ex-pect. Hearing about schoolfrequently can reducefeelings of anxiety.

•Visit the school. If this isthe student’s first timeentering this school, youcan take advantage oforientation days for newstudents or schedule anindividual visit to theschool. A tour and ameeting with the principalwill also assuage some

fears of the unknown. Thiscan also calm anyapprehension parents mayhave, because they, too, will know the layout of theschool, its policies, andwho will be watching overtheir children.•Don’t be nervous.Children often look totheir parents for guidelineson how to behave. A parentwho is overly nervous orsad about the first day ofschool could make theirkids nervous, too. Put on abrave face and keep anyanxiety hidden until kidshave left for school.•Be prepared. Gathersupplies, practice thedriving route, lay outclothes, make lunch thenight before, get a goodnight’s rest, and set thealarm clock. Knowing allof the controllable factorsare handled can ease themind of parents andstudents.•Stay positive. Always keepconversations about schoolgeared toward the positive. If children mention thingsthat frighten them, calmthose fears and show theupside to attending school.Provide examples of yourown school experiencesand how everything turnedout for the best.

The first day of school

can be a time ofuncertainty for studentsand parents. Adults arefacing a new stage in their

lives, and children areawaiting a classroom ofnew faces and require -ments. Preparing for the

first day can alleviate someof the anxiety aboutheading off to school for anew year.
