W hat global company located right here in Forsyth County is a leading innovator in an

industry that is bigger than the movie and music businesses combined?

Scientific Games International, Inc. has been a driving force behind the success of lottery and gaming organizations in 50 countries on six continents for more than 40 years. Celebrating its 40th Anniversary this year, Scientific Games provides lottery games, gaming machines and content, lottery and gaming systems, sports betting technology, loyalty and rewards programs, and social, mobile and interactive content and services.

In 2013, Scientific Games reported more than $1 billion in revenue. With more than 5,000 employees worldwide including over 1,000 in Forsyth County, the company is one of the county’s largest employers.

Arriving in 1994, Scientific Games was one of the first technology companies in Forsyth County. Today, Scientific Games’ Global Lottery Center of Excellence located on 22 acres just off Ga. 400, supplies the worldwide lottery industry with instant, draw and internet-based games, programs and systems technology. In fact, the company’s MONOPOLY™ Millionaires’ Club game was recently selected by the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL) as the new lottery national game in the U.S., which will launch in fall 2014 with plans for a national television game show to follow next year.

Scientific Games recently hosted a ribbon-cutting at its 355,000-square-foot Forsyth County facility with Georgia Governor Nathan Deal and Debbie Alford, President and CEO of the Georgia Lottery Corporation, for Alpha P-7, the company’s newest, most advanced instant game manufacturing technology. The new technology increases the company’s total production capacity to more than 46 billion instant lottery games a year from five instant game manufacturing facilities around the globe.

Innovation has always been a hallmark of Scientific Games. The company developed many of its products

and services as customer solutions, which ended up advancing the entire lottery and gaming industry. Scientific Games’ success speaks for itself: the company is a provider to eight of the world’s Top 10 lotteries for total sales – and provides products or services to nearly every U.S. lottery.

Scientific Games has supplied the Georgia Lottery Corporation with instant games since the Lottery’s inception in 1993. Following a record-breaking $2.6 billion in instant game sales in fiscal year 2013, the Georgia Lottery is now ranked No. 2 in the world for instant game per capita sales. To date, the Georgia Lottery has raised over $15.3 billion for the HOPE Scholarship and the Georgia Pre-K Program.

The Cumming-Forsyth County Chamber of Commerce gave Scientific Games the 2013 Heritage Award, which is given to a business that has been located in Forsyth County for 20 or more years. The company is active in the community and engages in charitable outreach through its SG Cares organization.

In 2013, the company added to its portfolio of gaming machines and content with the acquisition of WMS Industries Inc., expanding its market reach beyond serving lottery jurisdictions to serving casinos with groundbreaking gaming machines, content and related services.

For more information about Scientific Games, visit www.scientificgames.com.

A Global Innovator in Lottery and Gaming

In 1973, Scientific Games developed the breakthrough technology that launched the world’s first secure instant lottery game.

In-Depth

T he best brands endure because they remain relevant and stay true to their vision. This is especially spot on

for small to medium size businesses. The biggest branding challenge most small businesses face is finding the time to define the brand. While many understand that branding is essential to a business and critical to success, a surprisingly high number don’t really know why.

An unders tanding of the organization’s category, customers and competitors will drive strategic decisions. The brand’s vision and promise will then be reinforced, brand equity rises and a strategy is formed to drive real business performance.

Developing a strong brand requires a relentless focus on a c o m p a n y ’s u n i q u e v a l u e proposi t ion, different ia t ion, benefits, quality and pricing, all integrated around a consistent and powerful visual identity and message. No market is unchanging, and no market is simple. Having the discipline to create compelling content that informs, enlightens and inspires at all levels of an organization, all while providing clarity, consistency and maximum communication impact, will benefit a firm in the long run.

For starters, when creating a brand identity, organizations need to establish defined guidelines that include: logo, colors, tagline, typography, tone and graphics. Steer clear of overcomplicating the company’s branded elements. Clean, clear language, logos and imagery are simple elements that are more likely to be recognized and remembered by consumers.

A brand’s sum is greater than its parts. Therefore, to fight off fragmentation effectively, everything businesses do to attract, convert, retain and engage their customers should be

integrated. They must communicate a consistent identity from message to message and medium to medium, with one voice all the time, every time.

No single marketing effort works all the time for every business, so rotate several marketing tactics and vary your approach. Marketing can be fun. No need to have your customers tune out after awhile or get bored. Take advantage of the abundant o p p o r t u n i t i e s a va i l a b l e f o r communicat ing your value to customers. And remember that a significant benefit to branding is in maximizing the value of limited resources, saving time and money by streamlining decision making and eliminating additional discussions across a wide range of small business functions.

While branding is certainly a marketing discipline in its own right, it doesn’t need to be overcomplicated. Good intentions will go a long way toward helping small businesses form vital connections with target customers. If the thought of undertaking a branding initiative seems overwhelming, realize that there are sharp, insightful, collaborative and cost-effective creative marketing agencies that fit within an SMB’s budget. Partnering with an agency can prove to be the smartest marketing move yet.

F orsyth legislators have garnered high rankings on the Georgia

Chamber of Commerce’s 2014 Legislative Scorecard. Each year the Georgia Chamber assigns grades to elected officials on their commitment to growth and the wellbeing of businesses within the state. Legislative issues important to Georgia’s economy were tracked and legislators were graded on how they voted for these key issues.

Senator Jack Murphy (District 27) and Senator Steve Gooch (District 51) both received perfect A+ scores. Congressmen that received perfect scores include Mark Hamilton (District 24), Mike Dudgeon (District 25), Kevin Tanner (District 9) and Geoff Duncan (District 9).

One of the bills supported by the chamber was House Bill 714, authored by local District 24 Representative Mark Hamilton. The bill amended a loophole in unemployment law that was being abused by a small group of employers and employees. Contractors had been using unemployment funds to lower the cost of paying seasonal workers, who should not have qualified for the funds. HB 714 puts an end to this practice and will save businesses

$8-10 million each year. The chamber also supported HB 697,

a bill that allows technical college students to be eligible recipients of tuition through the Hope Grant program. Senate Bill 213, another supported bill, amends the Flint River Drought Protection Act to assist the lower r iver basin’s agricultural economy during severe drought.

High scores bode well for Cumming and Forsyth County. Businesses should be encouraged knowing loca l legislators are actively supporting issues that continue to stimulate our growing community.

S t a t e R e p r e s e n t a t ive M a r k Hamilton (District 24) has been

selected by the Georgia Chamber of Commerce as the House recipient of the Legislator of the Year Award. The Georgia Chamber presents th is prestigious honor to legislators who take their responsibility seriously to improve Georgia’s business community.

“I am humbled and honored to receive such an esteemed award from the Georgia Chamber of Commerce,” said Rep. Hamilton. “As a state legislator, one of my top priorities is bringing jobs to the state of Georgia as this is something that affects us all and will shape the economic future for our children and grandchildren. I’m proud that the Georgia Chamber recognizes my efforts, and I look forward to working with them in the future as we continue to create business-friendly policies in our state.”

Over the past year, Rep. Hamilton has authored and supported a number of initiatives that bring jobs and economic growth to the state. He authored House Bi l ls 714, 715, and 1048, and co-authored House Bills 399, 892, 902, 863, 1037, 838, and 176, all of which have been signed into law by Governor Deal.

Rep. Hamilton received an A+ rating, the highest possible, on the Georgia Chamber’s legislative scorecard this term. His high score is due to his support of bills that are in the interests of the Georgia business community.

The award represents another milestone of Cumming and Forsyth County’s success, thanks to the efforts of Rep. Hamilton and other leaders dedicated to bettering their community.

Y ou may already have a training method in

place for new frontline staff members. They must learn your business processes, the ins and outs of office procedure, where the extra pens are kept, etc. However; how much time do you s p e n d t r a i n i n g y o u r frontline staff members to truly be the frontline of your business? Many times these employees are the first r e p r e s e n t a t i o n y o u r business has to a potential new client. The first step to feeling confident in your frontline staff is to take a good look at your methods and procedures with those employees, from hiring to training and terminating.

The Smal l Bus iness Services Center and the Wo m e n W h o M e a n Business will host a July Lunch & Learn event to

help your business take that first step. This event will take place on Wednesday, July 16th from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm at the University of North Georgia – Cumming Campus.

You wi l l hear f rom business leaders on how they produce successful interactions with their frontline staff members and successful interactions between their customers and frontline staff members. Additionally, the floor will be open to discussion so that attendees can share tips and ideas with one another.

C r o w n / U S A N a t i o n a l Softball Tournament on CBS is a major event in the amateur sports arena and for our community. This year’s tournament will run from July 14-17, 2014 in various parks in Forsyth County, Alpharetta and Gainesville, Georgia. This is the first softball tournament of such high caliber that the area has h o s t e d , w i t h t e a m s participating from across the United States.

The tournament features 184 participating teams from 28 states. The winning team will be presented with a trophy similar to the Stanley Cup. The team’s name is engraved on the trophy which is placed at Triple Crown Headquarters in Colorado until the next national tournament is played and a new winner claims the trophy.

The team selection process is based on a ranking system that Triple Crown built which adheres to U.S. Club Rankings and AT-LARGE systems. The top teams in the country are selected for the tournament. Krista Judge, director of Triple Crown/USA Nationals on CBS, believes this is the most competitive national tournament in fastpitch softball.

When asked why Triple Crown chose the Forsyth county area, Judge responded, “We felt that Cumming, Alpharetta and Gainesville had communities that would welcome this tournament with open arms. They have top-notch facilities and hotels to host this tournament. We are excited about the future of Triple Crown in the Southeast region.”

The Forsyth County Parks and Recreation Department has successfully worked with Triple Crown regional tournaments for many years. Each

regional tournament has marked a successful partnership for both organizations. In addition, the Atlanta Legacy has a very strong regional showcase and gave its blessing to co-market the events and work together with the Parks and Rec Department.

The relationships that Triple Crown has established in this community have been meaningful and will be a great foundation on which to build the future of Triple Crown in Georgia. They have been very happy with the support from all members of the community, parks and hotels. One of these supporters is Children’s Health Care of Atlanta-Forsyth, who will

host the tournament coaches’ dinner on Monday, July 14, 2014.

The tournament anticipates at least 1,000 hotel rooms per night for Cumming/Forsyth, Alpharetta, and Gainesville areas, creating huge economic impact for the communities.

This tournament is a great family activity, so make plans to come out to Fowler Park on Thursday, July 17 at 4:30pm and 7pm for three games that will be nationally televised on CBS Sports Network. For more information, please call 770-887-6461.

JTECH Networks, a leading provider of IT managed services to small and mid-sized

businesses around the country, has recently been acquired by Digitel Corporation. Digitel is an Atlanta-based premier provider of IT, data center and telephone solutions to businesses and governments.

The merger of these companies creates an entity that will offer a comprehensive suite of IT services to thousands of businesses all over the United States. Digitel strives to be a one-stop-shop for managed IT services, phone systems,

contact centers, cloud data, structured cabling, data centers and computer repair.

Organizations often do not have the resources to keep up with the evolving world of IT services and applicable regulations on their own. With the addition of JTECH, Digitel’s eighth acquisition, Digitel brings these organizations a more complete and effective solution through their ever expanding portfolio of services. Their hope is that clients can spend their time on other key areas of business, while Digitel takes care of the IT services.
