Horizontal Subsystem
• The Horizontal cabling subsystem consists of
– Horizontal subsystem cables
– Telecommunications Outlet in the Work Area
– connecting hardware at the Horizontal Cross-connect (interconnect or cross-connect)
– any cross-connections to application specific equipment at the Horizontal Cross-connect
– Consolidation Point (optional)
– Multi-user Telecommunications Outlet (optional)
Topology
1 The Horizontal cabling subsystem shall have a star topology.
All Work Area Telecommunications Outlets must be connected with the Horizontal Cross-connect in the Telecommunications Room by means of a cable

Horizontal Cross-connect
• Two ways of connecting active equipment to the Horizontal cabling subsystem and one method for passive connection between the Horizontal and Backbone subsystems are used in the Horizontal Cross-connect:
– Interconnection
and
– Cross-connection
Distances
• The Horizontal subsystem distance is the cable length from the mechanical termination of the media at the Horizontal Cross-connect in the Telecommunications Room to the Telecommunications Outlet in the Work Area
Distances
14 Maximum cable length (distance) in the Horizontal cabling subsystem shall be no more than 90 m (295 ft) regardless of the type of transmission media

Transmission Media
• The following types of transmission media are allowed in the Horizontal cabling subsystem of the Signamax Cabling System:
– category 5e, 6, and 6a four-pair 100-Ohm unscreened twisted-pair cables
– category 5e, 6, and 6a four-pair 100-Ohm screened twisted-pair cables
– 62.5/125 µm optical fiber multimode cables (OM1)
– 50/125 µm optical fiber multimode cables (OM2, OM3, OM4)
– 9/125 µm optical fiber singlemode cables (OS1, OS2)
Configuration
21 All Signamax Cabling System Work Areas shall be built based on at least two Telecommunications Outlets serviced by two Horizontal cabling subsystem cables:
Outlet/connector 1:
• Connecting hardware, 4-pair twisted-pair cable with category 5e, 6 or 6A transmission performance
Outlet/connector 2:
• Connecting hardware, 4-pair twisted-pair cable with category 5е, 6 or 6A transmission performance, or
• Multimode optical fiber connecting hardware, 2-fiber cable, or
• Singlemode connecting hardware, 2-fiber cable

TELECOMMUNICATIONSPATHWAYS AND SPACES
Pathways and Spaces
• Horizontal subsystem pathways are facilities forthe installation of telecommunications cable fromthe Telecommunications Room to the Work Area Telecommunications Outlet.Horizontal pathways encompass:
– Underfloor pathways
– Access floor
– Conduit
– Tray and wireway
– Ceiling pathways
– Perimeter pathways
– Furniture pathways
Pathways and Spaces
47 All pathways where the Horizontal subsystem cables are installed shall be intended for this purpose and shall not share their space with other services ofthe building
49 The Horizontal distribution system pathways shall be designed and installed in compliance with local and federal construction regulations and electrical safety codes
