MARKET REPORT

Increasing Hose and Coupling Profits in the Power Industry Despite the PandemicThe power industry’s market for hoses and couplings has been impacted by both COVID-19 and the ongoing wildfires. Investment in hoses and couplings by power industry purchasers will be down in 2020 due to postponement of both capital and repair projects. This decrease in investments will be compounded by hose and coupling industry personnel’s inability to meet in person or attend industrial exhibitions.

EPC INTERVIEW

A Problem-Solving Team: An Interview with Justin DeckardHose + Coupling World had the opportunity to sit down with Justin Deckard to talk about how he emerged into the EPC market and what kind of experiences he has gained since beginning his career in the sector. Through his varying roles in the industry, Deckard has learned what is required of a piping engineer, and aims to share that knowledge with engineers coming out of school.

TECHNICAL ARTICLE

Transfer Hoses in Food & Beverage: Is Testing only the Food Contact Layer Enough? It is understood in the hose industry that the chemicals from the food contact layer may migrate into the transfer media during the fluid transfer process and are regulated by FDA Additive Regulation 21 CFR 170-189. When the level of migration is above a certain threshold, the chemicals may adulterate the food and potentially pose adverse health risks to the consumers. However, is testing only the food contact layer all that is needed to properly assess the risk to the consumer? From testing this single layer, can it be concluded that the entire hose is safe for the consumer?

SPECIAL TOPIC

Hoses in AgricultureFor many countries in the world, agriculture is one of the most important components of the economy. The sector works both for the domestic market, providing citizens with products, and for exports. It is therefore not without reason that countries are divided into ‘agrarian’ and ‘industrial’ type. The main production resource required for the life of any agricultural enterprise specializing in both animal husbandry, and crop production, is water. In order to distribute this and any other vital substances required to sustain life, hoses and pipes are needed.

Hoses for Harvesting: Interview With Silvio Campos and Fabio Silva When considering the success of its sugar production, much of the credit can be given to the quality equipment that is used for planting, irrigation and harvesting these crops. Marketing Director, Silvio Campos and Product Specialist Engineer Fabio Silva, from for CASE HI Agriculture, discuss the type of equipment required to harvest abrasive crops, such as sugarcane, as well as the types of hoses these applications require.

Collaborating with Continental, CoxReels has developed a custom-built hose reel assembly, the CoxReels P Series, specifically for Continental’s premium rubber and hybrid air and water hose. The CoxReels P Series reel is made with a ¼-inch steel base; a solid one-piece construction with heavy grade steel and no welds. They have adjust-able hose stops, a versatile guide arm and heavy duty spun discs. Continental is offering the hose and reel package with a hybrid air and water hose (TPE) as well as a profes-sional grade rubber air hose. The products can be acquired through Continental’s normal distribution chain.

NewAge Recycles Silicone Tubing Waste

NewAge Industries is now able to recycle the waste from its silicone tubing and braid reinforced hose extrusion pro-cesses. The recycled ‘scrap’ finds new life as silicone oil for industrial applications. Tubing scrap is created at the begin-ning and end of the extrusion process as technicians adjust the equipment for proper tubing dimensions. That tubing is collected and stored in bulk containers, which are then shipped to ECO USA. Following transport to the facility in Parkersburg, West Virginia, silicone is ground into small pieces, mixed with catalysts and heated to break down its chemical bonds. The final product is silicone oil that is comparable to virgin silicone oil manufactured from silicon dioxide. The oil is used in industrial applications such as lubricants, sealants and automotive dressings.

Midland Industries Opens Distribution Center in Houston

Midland Industries has announced its newest distribution center is open in Houston and serving customers with fast-er deliveries across the South, and a new ‘Will Call’ service for local pick-up orders. The center is located at 5544 Ar-mour Dr., Houston, Texas, 77020. This newest distribution center opening comes on the heels of Midland’s recent acquisition of Stainless Adapters Inc., a Houston-based manufacturer of premium stainless steel hydraulic adapters and pipe fittings servicing the oil and gas, marine, manu-facturing, and construction industries worldwide. Michael Baker, former SAI CEO, joined Midland as General Manager of the new Houston distribution center. The center stocks a complete line of industrial, plumbing, waterworks and ir-rigation products, including brass fittings, valves, malleable fittings, lead-free brass fittings, bronze fittings, stainless steel fittings and nipples, and much more.

COVER STORY: FLEXAUST

Flexaust has had a rich history of innovation, since its founding in 1938. Celebrating over 80 years in the hose and ducting business, the global company is no stranger to turbulence in the industry. As a world leader in the design and production of industrial and commercial applications involving air, dust, fume and lightweight material, Flexaust has maintained stability and continued to offer new technology driven products that allow them to persevere in the face of uncertainty.

Hose + Coupling World had the pleasure of speaking with Mike Harvey, Vice President/General Manager; Richard Meyer, CEO of Schauenburg Hose Group; Mike O’Brien, Vice President of Sales & Marketing; and Susanna Vandenberg, Marketing Manager at Flexaust, concerning the success of the company’s recent expansions, its continued commitment to growth, and how it puts the customer at the forefront of its decisions.

By Angelica Pajkovic

FLEXAUST The Integrity Driven Solution

Flexaust’s origin dates back to the 1930s, when Harold Hersey, a mining engineer from Arizona, developed a flexible hose constructed of neoprene-coated cotton adhered to wire. The hose system allowed for dangerous fumes to be vented out of the tunnels and fresh air to be brought in to the working miners. The flourishing industrial sector, triggered by World War II, lead the company to transition from mining to industrial applications, where it progressed to support the ducting and hose industries. Now the largest company within the Schauenburg Hose Technology Group, Flexaust

has a world-wide presence, serving markets in North America, South and Central America, Canada and Australia. “With the combined support of our affiliate companies in Germany, France, China, and Canada we are able to cater to a wide array of markets,” stated O’Brien. “The exciting part of what we do every day is that nothing is ever the same. Depending on the region we are in, or what industry is booming at the time, we could be focused on agriculture, wood working, ship building, marine applications, vacuums or repirator hoses,” he continued.

COVER STORY: FLEXAUST

The company's longevity has been attributed to their commitment to technology and innovation, while also recognizing the varied needs of their customers worldwide. Combined with the streamlined processes necessary to meet or exceed customers' needs in a timely manner, Flexaust has established itself as a world leader in flexible hose and ducting.

Streamlined Services

With four locations totalling almost 300,000 ft2 in Indiana, 50,000 ft2 in Massachusetts, a new 50,000 ft2 location in Las Vegas and a recently renovated 50,000 ft2 space in North Carolina, Flexaust has positioned itself to provide its customers with fast, reliable service for a complete line of commercial and industrial hoses. “In 2018 we mentioned that we were in the process of adding new locations to expand our business and better serve our customers, and that is exactly what we have done,” stated Harvey. “Our newest facility opened in January of 2020, and by the third week of February we had run our first hose,” continued Meyer. “With facilities that host 20 different hose making processes, including fabric and extrusion based processes, the decision to strategically place plants

in various locations allows Flexaust to efficiently offer solutions to its customers in any geographical area; they seldom have to wait because we do not have capacity on a machine.”

Today, Flexaust has modernized its ways of managing the business. This has been an ongoing transformation to alter its plant footprint, restructure the businesses and plant organizations, reduce lead times by reducing non-strategic machining, and continue the modernization of all systems.

“We have expanded not only physically with locations, but internally as well,” explained Harvey. “By investing into our engineering team and separating human capital so that individuals are assigned to more focused tasks, we have been able to consistently come up with new, innovative products and solutions,” he continued. In the past four years, the number of people in technology driven departments has quadrupled from 4 to 12, to 16, which has had a substantial impact on Flexaust’s offerings. “Not only does it aid the company to be better aligned with its customers' needs, it also ensures that Flexaust employees are able to focus their unique skills on the projects that are most suited to their strengths. This way we are able to guarantee that each product is of the highest quality,” added Meyer.

Expanding Product Capabilities

Flexaust continues to embrace the innovative and entrepreneurial spirit that has been the cornerstone of the company’s management from the beginning, while improving and updating the applications in place. With a wide selection of products including: wire reinforced fabric and plastic hoses, plastic wet and dry vacuum hoses, blow molded corrugated tubing, and hand-bendable metal ducting, customers

can choose the hose that will be the best fit for the intended application. The newest additions to the company’s family of products are the FLEX-TUBE VR-U and MG-U-SD (Or MG-Stay Safe).

The FLEX-TUBE VR-U (vapor recovery hose) was designed to be used during the delivery of gas to service stations. It is constructed with enclosed copper helix and static dissipative polyurethane to offset any buildup of static charge that could potentially cause an explosion. To mitigate any risk of accidents, the VR-U hose is used to extract the vapors in the empty gas tank as the tank is refilled with gas. The MG-U-SD (MG-Stay Safe) was developed to service most explosion vacuums that are used in pharmaceutical, powder coating, bakeries, plastic & resin production, general manufacturing, and woodworking applications, when safety from buildup is important. The MG-U-SD (MG-Stay Safe) is built with wire reinforced static dissipative polyurethane with conductive over molded cuffs on each end. As there is a constant effort to refine its processes, by being aware of current industry needs and investing in new equipment, Flexaust is able to continually expand the opportunity of what its process can offer. “Both of these new products were designed after our sales force listened to our customers,” stated O’Brien. “The hoses previously used in these applications needed improvements for safety purposes. So, we learned all of the pain points, discussed solutions

with our engineering team, and then made the necessary adjustments. This is just one of the ways that Flexaust makes sure that the customer is at the front of every decision it makes.”

Operating in accordance with the latest ISO 900 standards, Flexaust excels in its quality assurance programs as well as its costumer service offerings. Numerous testing procedures for incoming raw materials, and a wide range of quality and equipment tests and assurance systems, highlight the quality and depth of the company’s engineering capabilities. These assurances, in tandem with the high value placed on building long-term relationships with its distributors, customers, and end users makes Flexaust a highly trusted source for industrial hoses.

No Risk, No Fun

The No Risk, No Fun mantra upheld by Flexaust since its inception, has allowed the company to maintain a distinct advantage over its competitors. Where other industry focused companies might retract to uncertain times by downsizing or playing it safe, Flexaust does the exact opposite. By carrying on with expansions and maintaining its growth plans, the company is able to continuing serving its customers without delay and provide essential services to end users.

“As we enter an incredibly changed and uncertain economy caused by COVID-19, we are thankful for the progress made in the past few months. The combination of all the actions that the company has

taken to ensure the safety of its employees coupled with our employees outstanding efforts to provide essential services to our community, is a testament to the team’s ability to uphold the integrity it has for each project it undertakes,” stated Vandenberg. Flexaust’s aim to persevere through trying times unthwarted, has led it to be a more agile and resilient company, that can exceed the ever changing needs of its clients. Engineered for the Future

“The four strengths of Flexaust, that immediately come to mind are: its global presence, its philosophy for a slow and steady growth, its dedication to making decisions based on the value it offers customers, and the relationships it cultivates with each of its clients,” expressed O’Brien. “Our breadth of experience and our ability to solve the issue that clients bring to us, has earned Flexaust a deserving trust from our clients that cannot be undervalued,” he concluded.

SPECIAL TOPIC: HOSES IN AGRICULTURE

Hoses in Agriculture

The harvest and quality of the crop, as well as the livelihoods of forage animals, depend on a land’s quality of irrigation and ability to achieve the required amount of moisture. The importance of ensuring that these needs are met has there-fore led irrigation technology through a progressive history.

In the past, special aluminum pipes PMT (field main pipe-line) were used for irrigating fields, see Image 1. PMT pipe-lines were made up of 6 m sections with special sockets at the ends that fastened together with a locking system. Al-though the cost of this irrigation solution was relatively low, when compared with more modern pipeline technologies, many companies began to think about the additional costs incurred by the PMT pipe. More specifically, they began to assess the logistic costs associated with this type of piping.

PMT pipelines have a weak link that is often subjected to loads due to soil movement or temperature changes. As a result, the connection will lose its tightness. While in cases of water distribution this is not a threat to the environment, when it comes to pumping manure, such breaks can cause financial and reputational losses.

It is due to the combination of reasons listed above that agricultural enterprises began to look for other technologies to meet their needs.

Rubber Irrigation Hoses

One solution to many of the major pain points associated with classic Russian pipelines is to use rubber irrigation hoses. Available in diameters that range from 10 mm to 150 mm, the working pressure of rubber irrigation hoses, as a rule, is not more than 10 atmospheres; it is important to note that the larger the diameter, the lower the working pressure. Rubber hoses also have specific length restrictions

based on their diameter. A 100 mm hose, for example, has a continuous length of about 30 m to 40 m and can con-nected to another hose using Camlock connections, flange connections or BAUER connections, see Image 3.

If the project requires water to be transported several kilo-meters, then the laying of a rubber pipeline carries certain difficulties and risks. Since achieving such a long distance would require a number of hoses, and therefore a number of joints between the hoses, the risk of depressurization and further filling increases. In addition, many regions of agricultural activity have a significant amount of sunlight (ultraviolet radiation). As the rubber used for the production of irrigation hoses is not resistant to prolonged exposure to sunlight, after 6 to 7 months operation (in other words, one season), the rubber can crack and break down.

SPECIAL TOPIC: HOSES IN AGRICULTURE

Of course, there are rubber water hoses with various polymer additives that make rubber UV-resistant, but the market has developed in such a way that not all agricultural companies can purchase such hoses.

PVC Hoses

The progressive nature of the hose industry has led many manufacturers to offer products made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC) to combat the challenges that arise with standard rubber hoses. PVC hoses, in their classical sense, are mainly used for irrigation in garden areas. They have a standard working pressure up to 2 to 3 bar, a continuous length up to 30 m, and diameters that range from 10 mm to 50 mm, see Image 4.

Unfortunately, these diameters do not provide sufficient water passage for fields that span several hectares. These types of hoses are more suitable for solving local problems, such as apple fields, where whole irrigation systems are formed from similar PVC hoses, interconnected by various plastic fittings.

PVC hoses are also used to introduce liquid manure (water) into the soil using sprinkler machines known as pivots. The liquid fraction passes through hoses to special aerator mixers, where the manure is saturated with oxygen; this is done in order to homogenize the manure and reduce the unpleasant odor. The manure is then moved along the main pipeline, either a PVC hose or a polyethylene pipe, to the sprinkler machines. The sprinklers then spray the liquid evenly into the soil, see Image 6.

PVC Flat Hoses

PVC flat-rolled hoses, which are made of the same polyvi-nyl chloride, have now become very active in the market as well. Unlike a classical PVC hose which can operate in both a pressure and section mode, flat-rolled hoses are not equipped with a spiral, which prevents them from working in a suction mode. The main advantage of PVC flat hoses is their continuous length, which can reach 100 m to 200 m. In fact, the extrusion process, which is used in the produc-tion of flat PVC hoses, allows for the fabrication of continu-ous lines up to 500 m and more; this length is, however, extremely inconvenient to use, see Image 5.

Discharge flat PVC hoses are used as main pipelines for the or-ganization of drip irrigation (irrigation in the fields). The distin-guishing features of discharge PVC hoses are the special holes in the body of the hose. Plastic plates with a nozzle, pressed from the inside and outside of the flat hose, make it possible to attach plastic pipes that carry out drip irrigation, Image 7.

Other advantages of PVC hoses are: the continuous length of the coil, ease of installation, and the variability of use. The main disadvantage of these hoses is that they are also exposed to ultraviolet radiation, which leads to their rapid deterioration and failure.

Thermoplastic Polyurethane Hoses

The most modern solution for irrigation of fields are flat-roll hoses based on thermoplastic polyurethane. As in the case

of PVC, the most common lengths are 100 m and 200 m, with a range of diameters from 25 mm to 400 mm, and a working pressure that in a number of diameters can reach 63 bar. Thermoplastic polyurethane is a wear-resistant material, that is resistant to tearing, and most importantly, to ultraviolet light. Its operating temperature ranges from -60C˚ to + 80C˚ and it can be equipped with any type of connections, including special quick-release couplings.

Case Study – Benefit of Flat-Rolled Hose

A Russian agricultural company, located in the city of Krasnodar (one of the sunniest and driest regions of Russia, where the main agricultural lands are located), was tasked with ensuring the transportation of water 4.3 km from a reservoir to a field. The terrain was a hilly surface, which

complicated the task, and the water intake point was only to be used for one season, then moved to another site.

The use of either PMT pipes or rubber hoses therefore en-tailed significant logistical and time costs. After deliberation, the agricultural company chose to use a 200 mm flat-rolled hose with a working pressure of 10 atmospheres; the hose was equipped with quick-release couplings for ease of installation. The laying, with the help of a special winding device and the forces of a team of four people, took 27 hours, see Image 8.

At first glance, it seemed that the purchase of an expensive polyurethane hose did not bring economic benefits, but considering all the costs of logistics, installation, as well as subsequent assembly, this solution turned out to be the most cost-effective. In addition, the service life of a flat polyurethane hose is 10 years or 3000 cycles (one cycle

refers to the process of installation, work, dismantling). While polyurethane flat hoses are not currently a common solution for the agricultural market in Russia, it is a domi-nate solution for the US market. The largest market for any TPU flat hose plant is the US, which consists of roughly 60% to 80% of the plant's turnover.

Hoses for Manure Dispersion

During the growing season (the period of plant growth and development), an important factor for successful crops is the timely and high-quality introduction of the manure fraction into the soil. Used for fertilizing and growing crops, a pumping station transports the manure through a main pipeline from a lagoon (manure storage). The main pipeline can be of a stationary design, or it can be flexible.

As the length of such a line can reach 5 km, the use of a flat polyurethane hose with a minimum number of connec-

tions is a justified solution. From the main pipeline to the tractor that sprinkles the manure, the so-called drawing or towing arm is used, see Image 9. As a rule, the maximum diameter of the towing hose is 125 mm to 150 mm, and quick-release locks are used as connections (since they can withstand a similar tensile load and not lose tightness).

The manure fraction is transported through the hose to the tractor, to which special nozzles inject manure into the fertilized soil. Such a mode of operation implies colos-sal loads on the hoses; namely the hose is afflicted with constant bends and twists, tensile forces (tractor power of about 300 horsepower), and contact with the surface

(sand, stones). With the productivity of approximately 3000 m3 per shift, thermoplastic polyurethane has no competitive counterparts yet that can cope with this task. Manure contains dry fractions and particles, as well as traces of soil, small stones, etc., which imposes certain requirements on the wear resistance of the inner surface of the polyurethane hose.

Flat hoses made of polyurethane are successfully used on pig farms, where, often, lagoons are overflowing and it is necessary to pump fractions from one lagoon to another.

Final Thoughts

Hoses in agriculture are arteries, without which the exist-ence and development of agricultural crops is impossible. With a number of innovative technologies prevalent in the industry, there is range of hoses offered on the market that are able to satisfy a company with any capital and size of business - from garden land to a multi-hectare field.

MARKET REPORT

Increasing Hose and Coupling Profits in the Power Industry

Despite the Pandemic

By Robert McIlvaine, President & Founder, The McIlvaine Company

Effects of COVID-19

The impact of the pandemic is affecting various segments differently. If looking at countries as a segment, they have each experienced unique difficulties which affect them in various ways. The impact on India and the U.S. for example, will be negative while China is moving forward as planned.

When considering the effect of the pandemic on fuel types, nuclear projects are not impacted whereas renewable projects have been delayed in some countries. Similarly, the following sectors are experiencing various impacts as well.

• New companies are the most impacted. Very few hoses and couplings are being sold to new power companies who have never purchased the applications before.

• The market for hoses and couplings for new power plants owned by existing operators is relatively small, but has been impacted.

• The market for replacement hose and coupling is larger and less impacted.

• The market for repairs and service is large and the least impacted.

In general, there are high performance and general perfor-mance hoses and couplings. With high performance hoses and couplings the decision can be made to delay replace-

ment instead of repairing them. When general performance hoses and couplings fail they are normally replaced rather than repaired. There has therefore been a greater impact on high performance hose and coupling markets.

Effects of Wildfires

The wildfires in Australia, California, and elsewhere are being blamed on climate change and specifically fossil fired power generation. This ongoing danger has therefore led to the delay of gas turbine and coal fired plant projects.

The power industry’s market for hoses and couplings has been impacted by both COVID-19 and the ongoing wildfires in the U.S.A. Investment in hoses and couplings by power industry purchasers will be down in 2020 due to postponement of both capital and repair projects.1 This decrease in investments will be compounded by hose and coupling industry personnel’s inability to meet in person or attend industrial exhibitions.

MARKET REPORT

Figure 2.

Hose and coupling companies are therefore facing several years where revenues from the power industry will not be increasing. However, profits can be increased. Hose and coupling companies that adapt with new ways to target prospects, and communicate with them, will have an ad-vantage which can lead to greater markets shares, margins, and profits.

90% of the power industry hoses and couplings are pur-chased by less than 1,000 companies. Hose and coupling suppliers can easily identify the prospects and even the processes used in each plant. Figure 1 shows an example of coal fired plant operators with planned additions between 6,000 – 7,000 MW.

With knowledge of the existing capacity at any point in time the expenditures for new hoses and couplings, replace-ments and repairs can be made. Figure 2 highlights some tabulations for Eastern European countries.

Using Market Research

Market research has been used as a peripheral tool by hose and coupling suppliers for many years. Now it can be used as the foundation of a program to successfully pursue the Most Profitable Market (MPM). There is already

enough information available through media, associations, conferences, and internet resources, to determine the best prospects. Figure 3 highlights the difference between the present approaches to navigating a market, versus the MPM approach; it is an approach based on customer knowledge and not sales leads.

Ending Note

The Coronavirus and climate change present challenges to hose and coupling companies. Those that best meet these challenges can increase market shares, gross margins, and profits.

EPC INTERVIEW

An Interesting Beginning

Deckard did not originally plan to be an expert in the pip-ing realm. He went to Texas A&M University and obtained a degree in Ocean Engineering, with a specialization in Coastal Engineering, which included such things as beach water restorations and marina harbors. “Coming out with a degree like that, I had two choices: work for the army or work for the government in some other capacity. I did not want to do that,” Deckard relayed. “I even had a job offer to work in Korea, but I wanted to stay closer to home.”

Deckard secured an interview at his first engineering compa-ny through a connection of a college roommate shortly after graduating. “He told me that I would not understand what they were doing, because they do not teach it in school, but he would look over my resume. The interview was very casual, but I thought I bombed it. Surprisingly, I had an email offer waiting for me the next morning,” said Deckard.

Deckard spent five years at Mustang Engineering, moved to Jacobs Engineering for four years, returned to Mustang Engineering (rebranded to Wood), and eventually found his place at Arion, where he is now the Piping Department Manager. Through all the companies he worked for, Deck-ard has gained a lot of experience from different projects. “I had the opportunity to work on refineries with really big, really hot pipes – everything from 72-inch cooling water lines to 1,200° heater lines. I have worked on many topside projects for a vast range of clients, so I have been exposed to a lot of different realms.”

A Day on the Job

When Justin Deckard started his career at Arion, he had the opportunity to build his department from the ground up. In Deckard’s opinion, it was a great situation to be in, rather than taking over a department from a past manager. While there were still a lot of challenges to overcome, there was also a lot of excitement.

Deckard manages piping engineering and design at Arion, and he and his team handle everything from 3D modeling, routing, drafting isometrics, piping classifications, pipe and valve procurement, through to final delivery.

Deckard does not have a typical working day. “Every night before I head home, I make a plan for the next day of all the things I want to do. By 8 a.m. I have to re-evaluate the plan, and then it is re-evaluated after lunchtime. By the end of the day, I have maybe accomplished a few things that were on my original list,” Deckard admitted. “Our team is bringing a lot of experience from past jobs to the company, and we are learning how to make processes better moving forward.” Deckard works with a team of 21 designers and three engi-neers, with a focus on the offshore and midstream sectors. “We are going to branch out into different areas soon, and I think we are able to do that because we have a strong, diverse, roll-up-the-sleeves-and-get-dirty team.”

A Problem-Solving Team:An Interview with Justin Deckard An analytical person who is dedicated to their craft will go far in the piping industry, according to Piping Department Manager for Arion, Justin Deckard. With so many different situations that will come up on the job, a good problem-solver will find the perfect solution for each client. Deckard is a professional problem-solver, even if that was not what he originally planned to be.

Hose + Coupling World had the opportunity to sit down with Deckard to talk about how he emerged into the EPC market and what kind of experiences he has gained since beginning his career in the sector. Through his varying roles in the industry, Deckard has learned what is required of a piping engineer, and aims to share that knowledge with engineers coming out of school.

EPC INTERVIEW

Specialty Materials

In Deckard’s line of work, he sees many different materi-als being used for varying applications. When there is the requirement to work in different environments, it is crucial to consider what the best material is for the application, based on where it will be located. Deckard must ask ques-tions such as, “Are we dealing with corrosion? If so, do we need to have more intricate corrosion-resistant alloys (CRA) present, whether that is nickel or stainless?”

Deckard enjoys being able to work with CRAs because of the complexities that come along with them. “CRAs come with a lot of nuances and intricacies, especially in the pip-ing realm. We will have to work with materials such as clad Inconel alloy 625 or solid Incoloy 825,” Deckard stated. It is crucial to consider what the most cost-efficient option is to produce these applications, versus how long the material will last, while also considering any delivery issues that may arise. Due to the difficulty in procuring the more ‘specialty’ alloys, delivery times can be extensive. Mills can take anywhere from 32 to 48 weeks to manufacture and deliver materials, depending on the size and quantity of the order.

Various Equipment

Although pipes are his specialty, Deckard has experience with many more applications. “I have worked with valves, pumps and hoses, among many others, in my line of work,” he stated. “Even though the instrumentation team works on all the fun valve projects and installing them, we do plenty of work with gate, globe, and check valves. Thankfully, we do not see many failures with these applications.”

Another application Deckard has become familiar with, is hoses. His experience includes hose design, especially in terms of flex hoses and couplings. Typically, Deckard and his team design hoses that are 2 inches, or smaller, and are used for water connections and offshore applications. “The neat thing about working with hoses offshore is that you are not only dealing with eroding from the inside, but also from the outside,” Deckard explained. “Salinity in the Gulf of Mexico is so high that corrosion issues are often experi-enced on the exterior of hose and piping systems.” For this reason, coatings are crucial.

Deckard’s experience with offshore applications used in the Gulf region has given him the understanding of why coatings are so important when it comes to corro-sion prevention. “Coatings are significant here; once the equipment has been through a round of coating, the next round starts up right away to protect the equipment as much as possible. We are always working with clients to mitigate corrosion issues, whether that is talking about piping supports, considering the use of I-rods, which are a type of pipe support, or fiberglass pads,” Deckard relayed. As problem solvers, Deckard and his team will strive the best solution for the client, as they want to eliminate the constant worry about corrosion.

Digitalization

Digitalization and innovation are two things that Deckard is passionate about in his work. When he first entered the industry, Deckard recalls everything was paper-based. “You would get reams of paper in binders to go through, and almost every process was manual. What really excites me about Arion and my current role is that we are really pushing innovation,” said Deckard. One of the goals for Deckard’s discipline is to go completely paperless. There are many manual tasks that Deckard hopes to automate in the near future. He also hopes to incorporate a database-driven design where all information is held in a central location and then pushed to other locations that will require it. As opposed to relying on and managing paper files in several locations, it can all be managed in one place, and could also cut down the cost of business drastically for every party that needs access to the data.

A task that Deckard has taken on is digitizing all the infor-mation stored in binders by the experienced engineers. “As these people will start retiring, I am obtaining their old binders of reference material and slowly, but surely, I am inputting all that information in our digital system. I may need some help to get it all in there, but this is something I am really passionate about doing.”

Finding the Problem Solvers

In Deckard’s opinion, it takes a “special breed of person” to live the life of a piping engineer. “The piping world is very analytical and meticulous, with endless calculations.

EPC INTERVIEW

Justin Deckard and his Arion team.

It is always about the details in our line of work, whether they are big or small,” he explained. For this reason, Deckard is always looking for problem-solvers, and he is not afraid to bring in new engineers straight out of school. Throughout his career, he has brought in upwards of 20 new graduates to work with him and his team. For Deck-ard, it is important to attract the new engineers during the early stages to determine if they will become invested in the work. “Sometimes, finding an engineer who is ex-tremely meticulous in their work is as difficult as finding a unicorn, but once we find them, we will hold onto them forever,” said Deckard.

When he is training his new recruits, Deckard focuses on their problem-solving skills. “In the pipe stress realm, it is all about, ‘How do I solve fundamental problems?’ There are very simplistic concepts, but you need to be able to apply them in so many ways to different situations,” Deckard explained. “Sometimes the pipe does not have enough support, sometimes there is not enough space for the pipe, and you have to be the one to figure it out and find a solu-tion. I love how easy it can be to solve a problem, but also how challenging it can be. It makes every day different.”

During the training process, Deckard also tries to incorpo-rate the senior engineers and their vast experience. “We have engineers with 30 to 40 years of experience, below them there are engineers with maybe 10 to 12 years of experience, and then there are the new grads. There is such

a large generation gap for engineers, and I am trying to bridge that gap any way I can,” Deckard admitted. “In the past, during a downturn in the industry, we would lose our younger engineers, and the older, more experienced ones stay. That also contributes to the industry’s knowledge gap. Therefore, if I am able to bring together our experienced engineers and our new engineers to share knowledge before retirement, I will be a happy man.”

Advice for the Future

If Justin Deckard could give one piece of advice to young engineers, he would recommend staying dedicated to the craft they have chosen. It is important to put the time into the craft and become invested. In Deckard’s experience, it is very rare to see a new graduate with enough knowledge to be good at their job on the first day. “You have to be adaptable. I learned quickly that just because I want to do something does not mean that I get to do it every day.”

A big influence on Deckard’s career also came from his mentors. “I think it is really important to find one, or a few, good mentors. You need to latch on to them and suck all the knowledge out of them,” Deckard laughed. “There are mentors from my past that have retired, and I still call them up and talk about past projects and ask them why they chose the solution they did. I am not ready to lose all the knowledge that these engineers have, and I think it is very important for young engineers to be obtaining as much information as possible, before it is too late.”

Food Industry Hoses with Rated Working PressuresThe POLYSPRING® Series K7160 from Kuriyama of America is a crystal clear, phthalate free PVC transfer hose. It is a standard wall PVC transfer hose and is best suited for use in the food & beverage industry. The hose is formulated with ingredients in compliance with applicable FDA (03) requirements, and meets USDA(18), 3A(01), NSF(13) and RoHS(16) criteria. It is also reinforced with helically-wound spring steel wire. The Kuriyama of America group of companies includes eight subsidiaries and six distribution centers, as well as numerous distributors, providing a complete line of thermoplastic, rubber and metal hose products and accessories including couplings and fittings, for use in industrial and commercial applications.

Fast Repair of Damaged Hose FittingsAn imperfection on the sealing surface of a fitting can cause it to leak. In the past, users would have to replace the fitting, but now users can repair it on location. The Fitting Fixer from Koul Tools utilizes an inverted cone, diamond-dust coated lapping head to repair the conical surface and restore the seal with the flared tube. Sizes correspond to tubing O.D., small set: 3/16” – 1/2”; and large set: 5/8” – 1”. The damaged fitting screws into a guide that holds it in place; the lapping head connects to a drill and spins it intermittently several times. An inspection of the sealing surface must happen to ensure there are no imperfections. If damage is still visible, the lapping process must be repeated until there is a clean surface.

Profit’s New Angle-Pad Rigid CouplingProfit Europe has recently expanded their range of couplings and is proud to present their new Profit angle-pad rigid coupling (GKA) for automatic fire protection systems. This angle-pad coupling is an ideal solution for connecting pipes, fittings, hoses, valves and other pressure piping components. What’s new in the range of couplings? Improved rigidity as compared to GKS-coupling, also in pressure less conditions; lower axial expansion when the piping is pressurized, resulting in less stress on anchor, points and hangers; easier mounting as only one bolt needs to be removed before installation; and, full rigidity in lateral, angular and torsional directions can be achieved with the angled closing of the bolt-pads, even with deviating pipe sizes or on groove dimensions out of tolerance.

SPECIAL TOPIC END USER INTERVIEW

Known as the breadbasket of the world, Brazil has a prominent role of providing varied types of food to global markets. The roughly 106,000,000 hectares of fertile undeveloped land, and amiable weather, has allowed Brazil to become the world's largest exporter of coffee, soybeans, beef, and crop-based ethanol. With an average of 720 million tons of sugar produced per year, the country’s primary agricultural focus is on the production of sugar. While the country has a natural proclivity to produce an abundance of crops, Brazil owes much of its agrarian success to its investment in innovative agriculture based applications and technology. When considering the success of its sugar production specifically, much of the credit can be given to the quality equipment that is used for planting, irrigation and harvesting these crops.

Hose + Coupling World recently had the opportunity to speak with Marketing Director, Silvio Campos and Product Specialist Engineer Fabio Silva, from for CASE HI Agriculture, about the type of equipment required to harvest abrasive crops, such as sugarcane, as well as the types of hoses these applications require.

By João Carlos Vitorino and Angelica Pajkovic

Reaping Sugarcane

A wide variety of hose types are used in the production of sugarcane. From the moment the crop is planted until the time it is harvested, agricultural discharge hoses, suction hoses and fertilizer hoses are used to rear, fertilize, and irrigate the crops. Once the sugarcane is ready for harvest, however, an entirely different type of hose becomes essen-tial; hydraulic hoses.

Unlike other types of crops, that require roughly 300 hours of labor per year for harvest, sugarcane requires an average of 4,000 hours per year to reap the cane. In order to accomplish this task, hydraulic hose powered harvesting machines are used, see Figure 1. The mechan-ics of harvesting machines vary based on their intended application, and require highly robust internal compo-nents, such as high pressure hoses and highly reliable

SPECIAL TOPIC END USER INTERVIEW

couplings that can withstand the most diverse types of environments; such as excessive heat and continuous uninterrupted work regimes.

To account for the harshness of the environment in which these applications are operating, manufacturers of harvest-ing equipment, such as CASE IH, invest in technology and the quality of its products. “Agricultural environments, such as a sugarcane field, require equipment with strict specifica-tions and quality control. We therefore have ‘a beast’ com-posed of motors, hoses, and all kind of hydraulics that is used to harvest the crops,” said Campos. “The selection and acquisition of the components that make up the harvest-ing machine are fundamental to guarantee durability in the most diverse work environments.”

Hoses for Harvesting

A typical sugarcane harvesting machine operates all of its components using a hydraulic engine or pump. “There are essentially four large pumps which distribute hydraulic fluid along the harvest machine,” explained Silva. “There is one main circuit at the front of the machine, one in the middle, and a third system that runs the rear, each distributing hydrau-lic fluid through hoses to move various parts of the machine.” The schematic 3D model, Figure 2, shows the entire ramifica-tion of the hydraulic system. It highlights where the hoses and

couplings interconnect with the four main hydraulic pumps, Figure 4. These hoses and pumps work in tandem with actua-tors and hydraulic motors to provide the different parts of the harvester with the necessary power and mobility.

The hoses used for the high-pressure circuits and low pres-sure circuits on the machine are determined based on the environmental or regional conditions of the area that is be-ing harvested. “We use a variety of hose classes, including hoses that have abrasion resistant cover options, flexibility, and a wide range of working pressures, such as 100R3, 100R17, 100R12, and 100R15. They are constructed with an oil-resistant and reinforced synthetic rubber tube, that uses high-strength textile braid or braided steel wires, and are more robust than other industrial hoses,” said Silva. All hy-draulic hoses used for these applications are equipped with the latest Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) J517 and J30 standards, must comply with the SAE J516 and J518 standards and have a minimum bend radius of 1/2 SAE.

Preventative Maintenance

Unless a hose leaks due to damage caused by abrasive particles or perforation, there is no reason to replace it. Preventative checks on the hoses and couplings of the motors and hydraulic pumps must always be respected; some recommendations suggest every 500 to 1,500 hour as established in the manufacturer's manual. In an effort to reduce the risk of downtime or equipment malfunction however, Campo suggests looking for wears, leakage, or damage to the hoses on a daily basis, as a form of preven-tative maintenance. “Although we do our best to avoid wears, by establishing correct routings and selecting suit-

able materials, the mill’s harsh environment often makes it unavoidable,” expressed Campos.

While abrasion between the hoses caused by friction in normal work operations is the main cause of wear, other factors including weather, dust and changing temperatures can lead to a shortened lifecycle. Ensuring the best speci-fication of materials, as well as the choice of hose and coupling suppliers is therefore a constant focus for both Campos and Silva.

Testing and Validation

As the agrarian conditions in Brazil are particularly difficult, when compared to many other large food producing coun-tries, it is the ideal place for validation tests of the various components of agricultural equipment. “A common practice of ours is to run a number of different validation tests, called missions, on our hoses,” explained Campos. “We choose the toughest parts and expose them to the toughest conditions. If the hose, or any other component, can run in this condition, it can run in any other condition,” added Silva. By performing these types of tests on the harvest-ers, Campos and Silva can determine the needs of various hoses that experience a wide range of conditions, and take these needs to their engineering team, who transform them into product specifications and product improvements. It is these improvements that allow for the proper function of the dynamic harvesting systems.

End Note

Although a number of agricultural hoses are used in the production of sugarcane, the final product would not be obtainable without the aid of innovative equipment used to cut and collect the crops. The hydraulic hoses that provide power and mobility to that equipment, are therefore an es-sential part of the production process.Figure 4: Hydraulic Pumps.

“Although we do our best to avoid wears, by establishing correct routings and selecting suitable materials, the mill’s harsh environment often makes it unavoidable.”

TECHNICAL ARTICLE

It is understood in the hose industry that the chemicals from the food contact layer may migrate into the transfer media during the fluid transfer process and are regulated by FDA Additive Regulation 21 CFR 170-189. When the level of migration is above a certain threshold, the chemicals may adulterate the food and potentially pose adverse health risks to the consumers. However, is testing only the food contact layer all that is needed to properly assess the risk to the consumer? From testing this single layer, can it be concluded that the entire hose is safe for the consumer? This question is what has prompted additional study from the Saint-Gobain team.

By Xiaoyi Fang, Ph. D, Katie Morris, M.B.A., and Diana Ohl, M.B.A.

The food and beverage processing industry uses a variety of hoses to transfer liquids and foods from tank to tank, from pipes to tanks and trucks, and virtually in any loading and transfer applications. Currently, hoses are made from plastics, rubber, fluoropolymers and/or silicone materials. To achieve the desired performance, the hose is commonly constructed with a relatively complicated structure of several layers. Common structures include an inner liner (in direct contact with food), one or more reinforcement layers, and an outer jacket layer to reduce wear and tear. Sometimes this results in a hose with upwards of seven or more layers.

Food and Beverage Hoses Regulations

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) established the regulatory requirements for food contact substances

(FCS) in section 21 CFR Parts 170-189. These Parts of the regulations stem from the definition of a “food additive” under the U.S. Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act (FFDCA) Section 201(s). A food additive is defined under the act as any substance that may reasonably be expected to become a component of food as result of its intended use (Food and Drug Administration, 2020). The chemicals from hoses which migrate into food at “significant” levels are considered “food additives” and should be subjected to the FDA’s premarket clearance requirements, meaning they are subject to applicable Food Additive Regulations, an effective Food Contact Notification, or a Threshold of Regulation exemption letter, etc. The FDA also allows exemptions to Food Additive Regulations if the substances are Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS)

or prior-sanctioned by FDA for a particular use (Food and Drug Administration, 2020). For a chemical which is not cleared by the FDA, the threshold of migration is 10-50 ppb and it may even be a lower limit when there are special toxicological concerns; for example, if the chemical is carcinogenic, mutagenic, and toxic to reproduction. The manufacturers are required to establish a suitable U.S. food-contact status for the food contact substances which could potentially migrate into food. However, the current understanding within the Food & Beverage industry is to focus solely on the food contact layer while ignoring any migration from non-food contact layers (nFCLs), which could pose a health risk to the consumer.

What is Missing in the Compliance Process

A study by Saint-Gobain has observed that chemicals from non-food contact layers of the hose could potentially migrate into the food through the food contact layer. An inner white rubber layer was fully submerged in a simulant at 60°C for three weeks, with samples taken at various times throughout the soak. The multilayer hose was also filled with the same simulant at 40°C and allowed to soak for the same time peri-ods. Figure 2 shows the resulting gas chromatography result from the analysis of both simulants after soaking. The data shows the chemicals contained in the non-food contact layer (i.e. white rubber in Figure 2) were also observed in the food simulant (95% ethanol), which has been put in contact with the hose at 40°C that were not previously present in the liner material, see Figure 2.

In fact, the migration could happen at a much earlier time, even before the hose is being used. It starts immediately during the manufacture of the hose when the layers are assembled together and in direct contact with each other.

When multiple layers are placed in contact, migration will reach equilibrium until the chemicals are well dispersed within each layer. Since the food contact layer is constantly being “washed” by the food transfer media, the migrants may end up in the food, which implies that even before use, the food contact layer has already been contaminated by the non-food contact layers. Over time, the chemicals could eventually leach out of the hose into the transfer media. This is, however, highly dependent upon temperature, volume, type of fluid, hose thickness, etc. This type of indirect mass transfer phenomena is typically not considered by the hose industry and has not been addressed clearly by the FDA Regulations. There is also a lack of technical and product publications on the chemical migration between non-contact (liner) layer and inner layer(s) in F&B hose applications. It is understandable that hose manufacturers might not intentionally select low toxic, or non CMR (carcinogenic, mutagenic and toxic to reproduction) substances to formulate the non-food contact layers. So, the hose product being sold on the market may already have a contaminated liner with CMR substances prior to use.

Within food and beverage applications, if it is known that the potential indirect migration poses an adverse health effect to the consumer, the risk must be mitigated. To address the risk, Saint-Gobain has developed a tiered approach to be able to assess the migration of chemicals from the non-food contact layers by considering both the toxicity profile of the substance and its migration level at the customer use conditions, see Figure 3.

Typical testing for FDA food contact compliance involves using a plaque of the food contact layer only, and testing it for extraction levels over a period of time in various media (i.e., distilled water, n-Hexane, etc. in 21CFR 177.2600) as indicated by the FDA Regulation. Therefore, as a result, many hose manufacturers on the market could claim food contact compliance for their hose products, though if one looks closely, it is only for the food contact layer.

Figure 2: Gas Chromatograms of a migration profile of components from a non-food contact layer (top) and from the simulant in contact with the hose (bottom).

TECHNICAL ARTICLE

As demonstrated in Figure 2, migration through layers is possible and over time will impact the transfer media in the hose product. Case Study

To see the difference between the methodology applied by Saint-Gobain and a hose which has only the inner liner that has claimed to be compliant with the FDA Food Additive Regulations (Figure 5), migration testing was performed. The migration test was conducted at 60°C using a food simulant of 95% ethanol by filling and capping the hose. A chemical substance was measured at a level up to 6.67 ppm which is not cleared by FDA or EU food regulations, and is significantly above the threshold proposed by FDA (10-50ppb or even lower). Through further research, it was found that this substance originated from the non-food contact layers. Therefore, by claiming the inner liner as FDA compliant of such product could mislead the consumer that the product is safe to use for food contact applications.

At the same contact temperature, the migration level of chemicals from the non-food contact layer of the Versi-lonTM XFR hose shows a promising low value. This is a different chemical substance than what was observed in the previous figure and has been cleared by many food contact regulations globally, including FDA regulations, however the threshold was not provided. Therefore, the

specific migration limit of 2.5ppm was adopted from the EU food contact regulation (EU) No 10/2011, see Figure 6. The migration value of the product is much lower than the proposed threshold.

Final Thoughts

Safeguarding the integrity of the food is paramount and as a result the hose selection is critical. Choosing the right supplier to provide high performance and high quality solutions will help insure that the right hose is used for the right application. It will also ensure that the entire food or beverage hose is safe for the consumer.

Hoses Used in Agriculture

Whether they are for irrigation, to provide water to livestock, preparation against floods, or to transport abrasive materials, hoses are integral to the agricultural sector. In the world of farming and agriculture, hoses help achieve basic tasks that are essential to yielding a healthy crop and successful animal husbandry. There are a number of different types of hose that can be used for these tasks, each with its own properties.

EPDM Spray Hose

EPDM spray hoses are made of a terpolymer of ethylene, propylene and a diene monomer. They are used for agricultural chemicals, air, and water applications that require maximum flexibility. The EPDM rubber hose is suitable for

agricultural spraying of material such as herbicides, and has resistance to heat and ozone.

Anhydrous Ammonia Hose

This type of hose is designed to handle anhydrous ammonia (NH3) in agriculture and fertilizers applications. All NH3 hoses will be strip branded to indicate that they are suitable for anhydrous ammonia and will provide their working pressure. These transfer hoses typically have resistant tensile braids.

Farm Tank Hose

Farm tank hoses are used for dispensing all types of commercial gasolines and other petroleum based products from storage tanks and pump service stations. These hoses have high oil resistance and can be fabricated from a number of different materials.

EVA Hose and Tubing

Ethyl Vinyl Acetate (EVA) hoses and tubing are a lightweight, medium pressure tubing that is for used for anhydrous ammonia

liquid, herbicides, pesticides, liquid fertilizers and most other chemicals. The tubing is extremely flexible and has a strong resistance to acids, alkalis and many other solvents.

Fertilizer Hose

This type of hose is ideal for applications with: liquid fertilizers operations, Iirigation lines, liquid manure handling, septic and wastewater operations, and water suction applications. The EDPM

compounds make the hose light-weight, flexible, durable and chemical resistant.

Agricultural Suction Hose

A suction hose is typically used for agricultural liquid fertilizer, air seeder lines, drain lines, irrigation lines, and water suction. It is often considered a standard duty application hose. These hoses can be made with standard duty PVC with rigid PVC helix hose construction, or with EPDM rubber cover and tube.

Agricultural Discharge Hose

Agricultural discharge hoses are lay flat hoses used in applications that include: irrigation, general purpose water discharge, and construction applications. They can also be used

in quarry and industrial applications. This flexible hose is well suited for use as a drip irrigation supply line and in dewatering operations.

Large Diameter Agricultural Hose

A high pressure lay flat hose with high abrasion resistance, the large diameter agricultural hose is used by contractors injecting, or surface spreading sludge/slurry. They are also used by liquid management companies as a main feeding line. This type of hose is typically used for heavy duty applications such as: water bypass operations, dewatering operations, and sludge & manure main feeding lines.

MEETING POINT

Session Title: Testing & Inspection

Session Date & Time: Tuesday, December 8th from 11:30AM to 12:30PM

Session Chair: Fred Schweighardt, Advanced Fabrication Project Manager, Airgas

With over 35 years of experience in the welding and fabrication industry, Fred Schweighardt has been working for industrial suppliers and distributors since 2000. Currently a National Project Manager for Air-

gas, an Air Liquide company, Schweighardt works with large strategic customers to coordinate the value proposition Airgas brings to manufacturing operations across multiple locations. He works with customers all over the country on technical issues, leads internal training sessions for new welding specialists, and works with contractors to ensure quality fabrication.

As the Session Chair for the Testing & Inspection Workshop, Schweighardt will focus on a variety of inspection and testing methods for industrial hoses to ensure that the pressurized hoses and couplings have rigorous inspection plans and test methodologies firmly in place. “To improve safety and reliability we are moving from a past of relatively little compliance inspection, which perhaps consisted of a visual examination and possibly some batch/lot burst tests, to sophisticated digi-tal imaging, computer tracking of service history, and predictive failure analysis. This allows the product to run an increased lifespan with no decrease in safety and serviceability,” stated Schweighardt.

As specialized conferences like Hose + Coupling World are one of the few places where manufacturers, users, and industry ex-perts can all be in the same room, to share experiences and overcome common problems, Schweighardt believes that they are well worth attending. “There is really no duplicating the effect of having met someone face-to-face, and then working with them on a project, as compared to just working by email or phone calls. The opportunity to network and see exciting new products from industry leaders can be very helpful to overcome common problems,” explained Schweighardt. “As with all types of indus-trial work, increased safety, reliability, and compliance with standards is an ever-increasing hill to climb. We should continually improve our knowledge on materials and methods so we can meet the demand for safety and reliability,” he concluded.

Session Title: Best Practices & Lessons Learned

Session Date & Time: Tuesday, December 8th from 1:30PM to 2:30PM

Session Chair: Eric Blazej, Industrial Distribution Sales Manager, Proco Products

As National Sales Manager of industrial distribution for half of Canada and the USA, Eric Blazej works with maintenance teams at manufacturing facilities to ensure products are properly installed, and offers replace-

ment/stocking recommendations should a failure occur. His background in marketing, coupled with his past experience work-ing with HVAC and plumbing hoses, has provided him with comprehensive knowledge of a wide variety of industrial hoses. In his role as one of two Session Chairs for the Best Practices & Lessons Learned Workshop, Blazej will focus on the improper installation of hoses, what failures look like, and how to avoid them. “A catastrophic failure causes downtime in production which can lead to depleted inventory and a loss of revenue. To mitigate the risk of failure, we like to prepare our customers with installation techniques so that these types of issues can be avoided if possible,” he explained. The opportunity to showcase a number of products and services that a company can offer, coupled with the chance to meet with a new diverse groups of individuals, are just some of the reasons Blazej attends events like the Hose + Coupling World conference. “For manufacturers, it is important to attend events in order to show the wide variety of products/ser-vices they can offer. For end users it is important because they may find a better solution for their operation they may not have known about. Providing solutions to customers makes their job easier, and that is what we strive to do,” stated Blazej. “If you are a manufacturer, I suggest that you reach out to your local distributors, or current client base of end users, to let them know about the conference. The more maintenance contacts that attend the better,” he relayed.

Meeting the Session Chairs of Hose + Coupling World

Americas Conference 2020 The Hose + Coupling World Americas event, taking place on December 7th and 8th at the Royal Sonesta Houston Galleria in Houston, Texas, is quickly approaching. With a comprehensive conference program focused on various sectors of the hose industry, each workshop will offer an in-depth look at a prevalent hose related topic. To facilitate each workshop, the sessions will be chaired by an expert in that specified topic. The Hose + Coupling World team had the opportunity to speak to the Session Chairs, and learn more about how they found their way into the hose industry, what they are planning to address in their sessions, and why these conferences are so important to the hose industry.

MEETING POINT

Session Title: Best Practices & Lessons Learned

Session Date & Time: Tuesday, December 8th from 1:30PM to 2:30PM

Session Chair: Susanna Vandenberg, Marketing Manager, Flexaust

With expertise in multi-channel marketing, communications, branding, product positioning, and new business development, Susanna Vandenberg generates growth, market shares, and profitability, in her

role as Marketing Manager at Flexaust. The knowledge she has gained through her consistent interaction, and involvement, with industrial hoses and ducting, has provided her with the skills to offer other industry professionals the tools and infor-mation they may need to solve a wide range of hose and ducting problems.

As one of two Session Chairs for the Best Practices & Lessons Learned Workshop, Vandenberg will focus on a series of industry case studies. “I believe that this topic is important to discuss because it can help demonstrate how to approach a problem in the industry. Discussing the processes involved in a case study, or how a potential product development project could mitigate the risk of future complications, can lead to a better understanding of how to avoid a similar issues in the future,” she explained.

The Hose + Coupling World event’s ability to specifically address hoses and couplings, provides the conference with the oppor-tunity to be more ‘linear’ with topics than other, more broadly focused events. To take advantage of the hose oriented nature of the conference, Vandenberg suggests listening in on as many sessions as possible. “Even if there is no direct product connection, I believe the more information I can learn, the better. At some point, it all connects,” she continued. “In this industry there are a few types of hoses and this conference gives light to the industries where these products are critical to the whole operation.”

Session Title: Hose Assemblies

Session Date & Time: Tuesday, December 8th from 1:30PM to 2:30PM

Session Chair: Geoff Long, Business Development Coordinator, RAGCO

Having been immersed in the distribution of hoses, couplings and cutting gaskets since the age of 12, Geoff Long has a thorough understanding of this dynamic industry. In his current position as Business

Development Coordinator for Dreadnought Consultancy, a Business Development Coordinator for Ragco, Inc., Long culti-vates supplier relations and works to improve Ragco’s value to its members.

In his role as one of two Session Chairs for the Hose Assemblies Workshop, Long will focus on hose assembly compo-nents. “I am interested in the problems that the end users really deal with, and determining what the weakest link in a hose system truly is; I want to explore where the weakest link can be practically strengthened without introducing cost-prohibition.” As the assembly components of a hose directly impact how manufacturers and distributors prescribe hose solutions, they will also influence what hose systems are found in the field.

“While I have a lot of experience making hose assemblies, I do not have a lot of experience working with them in the field where their performance can be compared against their specifications. I look forward to learning more about that in the upcoming conference,” expressed Long. In addition to the opportunity to learn more about different facets of the hose in-dustry, Long is excited for the chance to build and strengthen existing relationships with other hose industry professionals. “When I communicate with people via phone or email, there seems to be more willingness for both parties to be helpful if we have met in person. Conferences give me a chance to meet people, which gives me a chance to understand them.”

Session Title: Hose Assemblies

Session Date & Time: Tuesday, December 8th from 1:30PM to 2:30PM

Session Chair: Gobind Khiani, Fellow, Piping/Pipeline

After receiving his master’s degree in Materials and Pipeline Engineering at the University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada, Gobind Khiani decided to follow his passion into fluid flow and the control and contain-

ment industry, igniting his interest in valves. In his current role as Consultant/Mechanical Engineering Specialist/Subject Matter Expert for Enbridge Inc, Khiani continues to explore his interest in mechanical engineering by developing programs for projects, exploring compliance demands, and helping to educate and spread his expertise.

In his role as one of two Session Chairs for the Hose Assemblies Workshop, Khiani’s focus will be on best practices for hose assemblies, understanding your fitting, maintenance (preventative and predictive), and connections (pressures and leaks). Understanding the basics of installation for any mechanical equipment, such as hoses and couplings, followed by its maintenance, is the backbone of the manufacturers and their technology; it provides longevity towards product perfor-mance. “The impact of understanding these topics, and how they affect the industry is huge,” stated Khiani. “If the manu-facturer and engineer collaborate towards selecting the available application and using the correct product for the plant site, it will benefit each application greatly.”

An increasing demand for energy means that the industry requires safe, environmentally friendly, sustainable, competi-tive, and within-budget projects delivered in a timely manner. Khiani believes that the only way to accomplish this mission is to have engineers take an interest and involve themselves in conferences and increase their knowledge by three ‘Ns’ (Network-network and network). “The relationships developed through mentoring and educating new engineers, through sharing experiences with the community at networking events and even through developing trust and respect with a vendor, are paramount to the success of the industry,” continued Khiani. “It is much more than the seminars and displays; these opportunities, if done correctly, inspire young engineers to learn about technology even after the venue has closed.”
