In interviewing Mr. Rosecrans (Crans)Baldwin, President of both Bergamo Fab-rics and Donghia, Inc., one is struck by hislove of the interior design industry basedon more than 30 years of experience.

“I view the skill of the interior de-signer as a combination of the gift of tal-ent combined with education andpractical experience. Interior design canbe taught, but the inherent talent that atruly great designer displays is somethingthey seem to have been born with, that be-comes a craft that they hone through ex-perience”. Having dealt with the interiordesign profession in the hospitality, resi-

dential, corporate, aging in place and storeplanning segments of the business, Bald-win has grown to truly respect interior de-sign as a both a profession and as anessential element of worldwide quality oflife. “Interior design enhances nearlyevery aspect of global culture, be it thefeeling of wellness in patient care to de-compression in a wonderful hotel room tothe sense of place when one returns homefrom a day at work”.

Standing in his booth at HD, whereBergamo and then Donghia have exhibitedfor many years, Baldwin points out howdifferent Las Vegas has become because

of design, specifically the design of hisfriend Roger Thomas at Wynn. “Imaginethese gigantic structures with no Wilson &Associates, no Wynn Design, no HBA orRockwell or KNA or ABA or all the othertalented designers that built Las Vegas?Unconsciously and perhaps unknowingly, the patrons of these hotels come for the

the surface, allowing the glass to with-stand some of the harshest conditions. Inindependent laboratory testing, Shower-Guard and competing products were ex-posed to hard water with dissolvedsilicates. After repeated exposure, otherproducts developed permanent stains, while ShowerGuard retained its cleanabil-ity—which can save time and money.

• Time takes its toll on ordinary mirrors:Average ammonia cleaners eat away at astandard mirror’s reflective surface, caus-ing black edges. Humidity and other en-vironmental conditions will degradeappearance and reflective performanceover time. Guardian UltraMirror standsup to these challenges and is backed witha 10 year limited warranty—twice as longas the industry standard, making it an easychoice in the high wear-and-tear environ-ments of the hospitality industry.

The high performance of Guardian’s Dia-mondGuard, ShowerGuard and UltraMir-ror means facility managers can minimizecostly replacements. The products don’t re-quire special products or coating replenish-ment, and can be cleaned with a wide rangeof common industry products. These prod-ucts can help a project achieve LEED forInteriors certification.

Q: Skypad is a premier resource forcustom contract furniture. What isyour definition of custom furniture?

A: Pure first time, and often one time, rapid prototyping leading to the produc-tion of designs that have never beenmade before or are new to the producer. While Skypad does offer cataloguedcollections, our greatest asset is the ac-cumulated capital base of knowledgethat our organization has developedover the last 13 years, producing morethan 10,000 custom designs on behalfof some of the greatest designers, archi-tects and brands within our industry.

Q: Where does Skypad manufactureits products?

A: Skypad was one of the earliest adaptorswithin global hospitality to produce thebulk of its products in Mainland China. Imade my first visit to China back in 1996and have since made over 40 visits.

I am constantly in awe of what China iscapable of under the right circumstances.Skypad manufactures in other countries, notably in the United States. However,China remains of paramount importanceto the delivery of our core value propo-sition.

Q: So what is Skypad’s core valueproposition?

A: Bringing the highest concept contem-porary and transitional custom furnituredesigns to hospitality at price points thatthe developer can afford, and at a qualitythat the designer or architect will adore.

Q: What is China best at in your opin-ion?

A: Skypad has an incredible knowl-edge base concerning what productsare best fabricated in China and wherebest to manufacture them. In general,China is exceptional at one: very highvolume aggressively priced productionfor select brands and two: high designcontemporary fabrication where thecombination of shape, material andtechnique cannot be accomplishedelsewhere competitively.

I am proud of the fact that we haveworked with our upholstery partner on anexclusive basis for over a decade. The in-tellectual capital that we have mutuallyaccumulated is impossible to replicate.

Q: Whom do you look to please on aproject?

A: All three constituents that we serve(brand, design and purchasing) must beprovided with an incredible experi-ence. Skypad is a preferred resourcefor leading design firms because of ourproven track record in being able torender their incredible visions withoutcompromise, regardless of budget. Ifdesign is thrilled, then the brand thatwe are both working for will likelyalso be pleased. With Purchasing, weare constantly striving to ensure thatour protocols for project managementand reporting results in their having atransparent, accountable and reliableexperience with us.

Q: What is Skypad working on for thisyear that excites you?

A: This year we are very privileged tocontinue our long association with W Ho-

CASigns also provides signage for hos-

pitals, schools and government projects.

Q: What is CASigns’ secret to its suc-cess during these challenging economictimes?

A: After completing several prominent, upscale projects in 2008, we had to re-evaluate our resources as we facedchallenging times. We adapted to theeconomic changes by concentrating onpublic works projects; increasing ourbonding capacity, working with pre-vailing wages and tackling the admin-istrative requirements involved withpublic jobs. We are now an experiencedpublic works contractor.

We’ve remained focused on the hospi-tality industry throughout and con-tinue to service our hospitality clientswith the same level of commitment asalways.

Q: What does the future hold in storefor CASigns?

A: We expect to maintain our statusamong the highest level of well-respectedarchitectural sign companies in the indus-try.
