Thiscarpeting is sturdy and will stand alot of abuse, but we feel sure allyou members will avoid wearingyour spikes while walking on itwhenever possible. It is a room forcomfort and relaxation and yourcommittee is proud of this chanceto improve your enjoyment of thegrill.

The new bar, the new entranceand the new carpeting are changesmade to give the best service to themost members. Feel free as mem-bers to sugges't anything that mightaid the membership as a whole.The committee is serving you mem-bers.

John A. Olson, Chairman of theHouse Committee, reports that theold entrance to the men's grill andlocker is being moved from thenorthwest corner of the buildingtoward the center and this changewill be virtually complete by thetime this news reaches you. Theentrance will be directly behind theright side of number ten tee. Thismove does away with the necessityof trudging to your locker throughthe grill room and enables you tohurry directly to your locket afteryour game. If need be you canhave a good cry about your scorewithout letting the whole grill dele-gation in on your secret.

road is about to receive its- finalblack-top treatment and with thisblessing passes the old dust andgravel-noise worry that were bear-able, but certainly not enjoyable.The base is now set fast and withthis final step we shall enjoy sev-eral seasons of smooth-surfacedroad. Too, the black-top will makea pretty sight lined by its small lightgreen trees that wind in with theroad and up to the pumphouse.

By the time this appears in print,the water system giving us a con-stant supply of city water will becompleted and we can all say a be-lated adieu to the well trouble thathas plagued us. Many hundred feetof pipe, a lot of hard work and verycareful planning were required tobring this improvement and it iswith great appreciation for all co-operation that we view this task nowfinished.

You may have noticed our greenskeeper scooting along on his me-chanical marvel. This bit of ma-chinery will help him keep a con-stant eye on all points at the cluband accomplish a lot of things inhalf the time formerly required.

The trees set out this spring aredoing exceptionally well and haveadded a real touch to some of ourparallel fairways. They will nodoubt add a touch or two to yourscores, but they are in the interestof a more beautiful Mt. Hawley andbetter golf.

The Grounds and Greens Com-mittee does what it feels will bene-fit our club. If you have an idea,do not hesitate to let us talk it overwith you.

bers ending with the addition offorty memberships, it is the generalfeeling that our committee has beensuccessful. It is with deepest sin-cerity that I congratulate all twentyof the members who served on thiscommittee. Their work gave Mt.Hawley its greatest benefit of theyear and goes a long way towardpermanently guaranteeing thepleasure we find here at the club.

Pool Splashes and Pool EventsIn spite of the one week of rain

and cold the month of June endedexceptionally strong in attendance.A near record for the month was setup when the attendance ran overone hundred a day for almost twoweeks.

There have been several notedimprovements in the swimming ac-tivities of the younger generation.Slick Steenrod, Richie Clopper, Mar-tha Miller, and Eugene Phillips areswimming in deep water, diving offthe board and swimming the back-stroke.

A.A.U. swimming meet at PekinJuly 11 and 12. Of these five, threeare veterans who placed in the meetlast year but have to move up intothe next age class this year. Thismakes them the youngest of thegroup, but they are working hardto place again this year.

The Fourth of July was spentrather quietly with handicap racesand relays in which practically allthe swimmers in the pool took part.It was climaxed by having two fishput into the pool for the swimmersto catch. This did not prove tootough, and the fish were then putinto the lake. Then the pool wasthrown open for general swimmingfor the rest of the day.

Now that we have so many activegolfers in our club. it might not bea bad idea to start observing one ofthe oldest rules in golf, and that is,H you have one complete open holeahead, to let the foursome followingyou go thru - this helps. to speedup play and eliminates a lot ofgriping.

Louie Knoblock was a guest at theclub for a round of golf last monthand the coarse hasn't recovered yet.He dips all the limbs from the treeson the left side of each fairwayplaying that educated slice of his.

How do you like those yellow, air-conditioned pants of Wayne Mil-ler's? That fireman's shirt of Harley·Potter's is a honey too.

The funniest thing we've seen ina long time occurred at the club staglast month. Some little guy aboutSfeet tall and weighing 110 poundssoaking wet had been imbibingrather freely and wanted to chooseanyone in the place including GlenFranks.

Geo. Hagerman, the young bride-groom from Wilson's came downfrom Chicago for a visit with ourboys and tho we must admit his in-tentions vyere good, poor Georgewas pretty well petered out whenhe finally escaped from Peoria.

Still another activity has beenadded at Mt. Hawley. The newShuffle Board courts seem very pOp'ular. Merrill (Curly) Frederick ap-pears to be the club championShuffleboarder.

Saw Dr. Foster prancing aroundthe golf course the other day like atwo year old. Now if we could getErnie Galbraith out of hibernationand a couple more of our irregularswe could arrange a good foursome.

These golfers are a peculiar lot.One fellow comes charging into thelocker room feeling very exhuberantover the fact that he has just broken ahundred for the first. time. Anotheris happy in being under ninety, andso it goes down the .line until yousee some guy sitting over in a cor-ner with a sour puss after coming inwith a seventy-eight - but that'swhat makes golf an interesting gamefor all who play.

The matrimonial aspirations of oneof our young golfers has played hellwith his golf game, but after lookingher over we marvel that he has beenable to get his temperature lowenough to shoot in the nineties.

The ladies of Mt. Hawley certainlydo take their golf seriously. Theyinsist that their tournaments be con-ducted strictly in accordance withthe book of rules, and in our humbleopinion that's the way they shouldbe played.

This guy Parks really parks thosetee shots and also sings a mean tenorin the locker room gangs orne - notgood but loud. This bunch of har-monizers held a great songfest onthe Sunday afternoon of the big rainafter getting tuned up with aboutthree bottles of Scotch and two ofBourbon.

Two really great golfers of ourclub have requested that the truthand nothing but the truth be aired inthis column regarding the contro-versy between themselves and theiropponents in a Scotch foursome

Theseunjust accusations have upset thesetwo boys and has affected theirgame so their handicaps will prob-ably be much greater when a returnmatch is arranged, and in closingthey still maintain that they are bothessentially honest.

Another month has rolled aroundand almost half of our golf scheduleis completed. We have had goodturnouts on Tuesdays which I hopewill continue to be the case allsummer.

On June 3rd, a rainy day, thegame was blind bogey. A fewbraved the elements and finishedthe game. Cleta Merrill was the win-ner in the first division, Dorothy Zinnin the second and Lee Glatz in the9 hole group. On Thursday, June5th, the first 4·ball mixed foursomewas held. Catherine Black and Wal-ter Wesselhoft each received 2 golfballs for first place with Lou Fritzand D. Wead each receiving one ballfor second.

The weather continued miserableon June 10th so the games were cutshort after 9 holes. Cleta Merrill(a rainy day golfer) was again win-ner in the first division, LoretteLively in the second and AnnPowers in the third.

June 12th a 2 ball mixed foursomewas held with Irene Steward and B.Fuchs coming in first and BernicePinnell and H. Triebel, second.

On June 17th and 18th our 36 holemedal tournament was held withAlice Love coming out ahead with152 net for the 2 days. CatherineBlack and Helen Nicoll tied forsecond with 153 strokes. On June17th in the 9 hole group Mrs. Morganwas the winner. Also on June 17thwe qualified for the Willman trophy.

Another 4 ball foursome (blindbogey) took place on June 19th -first place going to Gladys Lund-berg and D. Wead. Edna Andersonand Joe Herman teamed up to takesecond.

On June 24th rags and tatters ap-peared on the golf course as it wasHobo day. Mrs. Swenson handedbox lunches out the back door to

take to the picnic grounds. The golfgame was low net and Gladys Lund-berg took honors in the first division(even if her toes were sticking outof her shoes), Edith Wilkens in thesecond and Ella Barbee in the 9 holedivision.

June 26th our girls went to Gales-burg as guests of the SonangetahaCountry Club women. Mary Hazenand Helen Fuchs from our club tiedfor low gross with 96's. Low netswere won by M. Hubbard, G. Lund-berg and Edith Wilkens.

On June 27th we played Newmanwith the Peoria Women's GolfLeague with lunch following at theLekas Marine room. Alice Weadwon low gross with a 92 and RuthGift won low net.

The first of July quite a group ofMt. Hawley ladies went to the PekinCountry Club. Cleta Merrill had 96for low gross and Lorette Lively wonthe low net prize.

In the July 4th putting contestDorothy Zinn captured 2 golf ballsand Alice Wead, one.

On June 22nd Catherine Blacktook her husband for $10 by break-ing 100 for the first time. IncidentallyCatherine is just one point out ofthe first division. Alice Love won agolf ball for going into the first divi-sion. G. Lundberg and C. Black hadlow ringer scores for June.

Ruth More, one of the newcomersto Mt. Hawley, shot a nice 85 on theFourth. Gladys Lundberg had a 94the same day.

Matches played in the first roundof the Willman Trophy gave victor-ies to Nicoll, Soules, Love, Wilkens,Fritz, Hubbard, Fuchs and Wessel-haft. In the second round Love,Hubbard, and Fuchs were the win-ners. Next week we qualify for thePresident's Trophy with matchesstarting the following week.

Kids Party a Success - More LaterYour committee was certainly

pleased with the success of the"Young Peoples Dance" last month.Verl~Bogue certainly had those kidsdoing their stuff. Youth was rulingthe roost that night. One father (Icould mention his name) came tothe front door and asked if he couldspeak to his daughter, we said,"sure, come on in." "Oh no," hesaid, "Have her come out on theporch." I guess he was afraid ofbeing run down and trampled. Didyou ever see a hen busily lookingafter her little chicks, well then youknow' how Mrs. Swenson lookedthat night. Watch your notices kids- we may have another party someday.

Your social committee is going totake it easy for a while during thishot weather and let your golfingevents and Thursday night affairskeep you busy, but watch your no-tices because we might slip up onyou and throw a party.

Ladies I'm sorry you couldn't haveseen the main boxing event at ourstag· when "One Round Franks"battled "Slugger Pinnell" to a 35round draw. The purse was sup-posed to have gone to the widow ofthe loser, but inasmuch as it wasa draw we gave the money to the"society for prevention of slices onNo. 10".

in golf? Most Pros will tell you it'sthe swing that results in a slicedball. Of course, Geo. Lundberg willsay it's a shank shot as far as he isconcerned. Lyle Hoffman will votefor a missed three foot putt. RoyZinn may tell us it's looking up. Butgetting back to that slice, it is justnatural for a beginner to slug at theball with his shoulders and lead withhis hands. By the time the dub-head meets the ball his shouldersand hips are turned facing down thefairway and his hands are a foot ormore ahead of the c1ubhead. This,apparently, is the easiest way tocontact the ball for anyone startingout to learn to play golf. However,in doing it this "easy" way he de-velops a slice and sooner or laterhas to spend a lot of time with hisPro to get out of the "habit". Thosewho slice, fail to get their arms andhands underway after starting thedown swing. During the past fewyears, I have "straightened out" hun-dreds of golfers who thought theirslice was incurable. So, if you slice,don't get discouraged, take a lesson.

WMBD. Hank Fisher and yourstruly, have been interviewing ourgolfers every other Saturday nightat 11 P.M. Listen in on the nextbroadcast, July 26th.

Warren Brownand Harold Inwoodhave just returned from a southerntour. The two Kiwanis delegates tothe Atlanta convention played overBobby Jones' home course, theEast Lake dub, and shook handswith the one and only Grand SlamChampion. Although they foundthe course in fine condition, thegreens were not as good as Mt.Hawley's. ..,=-

Your Pro has managed to get ina few games recently and has en-joyed every one of them. I learned,however, never to start Bentley Ham-ilton and Gene Horton three up oneach side, and play their best ball.Had plenty of fun with Bruce Blacklast week-end. He and I went 18holes with J. R. Love and Jimmy. Ididn't know what to make of it afterthe first hole: Score Art 5, JimmyLove (age 11)4.
