Since the 1970s with the arrival of the boat people from Vietnam, Greater Dandenong has been the largest culturally diverse locality in Victoria, 61.9% of its residents are born overseas from 150 different nations.
It was sought after for the affordable housing and job opportunities the automobile industry offered.
Today, it maintains the most newly arrived migrants in Victoria, of whom a third are refugees. It’s substantially cheap rental , ($320 compared to metropolitan average of $403) and job opportunities continue to draw settlers.
As a result of this amalgamation of migrants and refugees, many services have been set up to assist resettlement and job seeking.
