IMPORTANT NOTES
1. DEFINITION- In-service education is defined as a program of activities designed to increase
the competencies needed by all licensed personnel in the performance of their
professional responsibilities. In this context, "competencies" are defined as the knowledge, skills, and
attitudes that enable personnel to carry out their tasks with maximum effectiveness.
2. Each teacher must have 30 hours or more of approvable inservice
credit by the end of the year. (TCA 49-6-3004) (June 1, 2015- June 1, 2016),
It is your responsibility to account for your inservice training time and
report it to the central office. If you fail to get your 30 hours, your final pay will be
adjusted.
3. It is important to know that you cannot claim inservice credit for any activity for which you are
already being paid, or conducted at a time for which you are already being paid; i.e., an instruction
day, other day, sick leave day, personal leave day, staff development day or paid holiday. All
inservice must be done after school hours, weekends, or when school is out. (The 200 day
Accountability Calendar will help you with this.)
4. REQUIRED DAYS: Some activities require the presence of all the staff of a grade, school or of
the system. These activities will be identified in bold print as required. If you are in the target
group, you will be expected to attend these required days regardless of how many total days you
may have. If you fail to attend (all day) on required days, your pay will have to be adjusted. In the
case of severe illness or death in your immediate family, etc., you should contact the
Administrative Assistant or your Principal (depending on if it is a system required day or a school
required day). For almost all other reasons, you should make other plans.)
5. OUT OF COUNTY inservice activities must be verified. Verification should include:
1. What the inservice was; 2. Who attended; 3. Date or dates; 4.Where it was conducted;
5. How much time was spent in in-service activities? [Travel time cannot count.] A certificate
containing the above information and signed by the presenter or workshop official is the one of the
best verifications.
6. LOCAL inservice activities must be approved and have a sign in sheet for participants. A description
of the activities and the sign in sheet should be sent to the central office after the event.
NON-APPROVABLE ACTIVITIES FOR IN-SERVICE (Copied from state in-service instructions)
1. Parent-teacher conferences.
2. Teachers working in their rooms.
3. Putting grades on permanent record forms.
4. Business meetings for a professional association.
5. Coaching clinics/cheerleading clinics.
6. College courses for credit.
(This is not meant to be a comprehensive list. Only those activities that are most frequently asked about are addressed.)
